@7lenny7 I'm sorry to hear about the tear - hope your meeting with the surgeon goes well tomorrow and it won't be too long of a recovery process.
@LaDispute57 what a grueling and amazing effort. Sorry you weren't able to finish but you put in an absolutely impressive effort on a killer course.
@MegaMooseEsq great job on your half. Glad you had a good experience. Even if you finished a minute slower - you felt more comfortable and had a good time so it sounds like a win to me.

Tonight's run was a sharpener before my race this weekend. I went to the Tuesday night group instead of my usual Wednesday because coach likes us to do the sharpener on Tuesday and take Wednesday off. We did a 15 minute warm-up run, which I could tell I was pushing the pace more than I normally do but I felt great. The taper has my legs feeling so much fresher, as intended. Normally the sharpener he has us do is one single 3-minute hard interval. This week's workout though was an inverted ladder starting with a 4-minute interval though so he suggested I just do that one interval with the group and then do my cool-down. So I did the 4 minutes. What had been some light mist turned into a cold rain at that point, but I still felt pretty good. During the 15-minute cool down I was less pleased about the weather but kept in mind that the weekend forecast includes a decent chance of rain so I should be happy for the practice. My main worry about that is my hands getting cold, even if I have gloves they will get wet.
I got a lot of last-minute advice and most of it was just to enjoy the experience and don't worry about my time. All the training is done, I'm in the best shape of my life, I just need to keep going. In 5 days I will run a marathon.

@7lenny7 great job on your run, so inspiring and sorry to hear about your foot.
@LaDispute57 I enjoyed reading your race report. Those hills are beasts and you have it one heck of an effort.
@MegaMooseEsq nice job on your race
Tonight was supposed to be four miles, but I’m a bit stiff yet from my run on Sun. I noticed my right outer thigh is quite tight. It’s the same leg that the knee pain is on, so I took the night off and did some stretching and icing. Half marathon is Sunday, so we’ll see if things are looser tomorrow for a short run. Too late to worry about fixing it now, so just going to take it easy and do a better job at training smarter next time .7 -

I started out hurting today but it didn't get worse as I ran. My other foot still hurts but only when I've been on it for a while and not first thing in the morning so probably not PF. Almost feels like a bruise.
Also I forgot to turn off my watch when I got home.

3 miles on the bike with Kody running beside me. I dressed too warm and my butt hurt so I quit before I planned. I'll do this every night until surgery.
It occurred to me earlier today that Kody will miss running every bit as much as I will if not more. I'll have to find a local runner who's willing to take him along.12 -
Some great race reports! @MegaMooseEsq Congratulations on a well handled race! @LaDispute57 Too bad about the phone, but excellent effort on a challenging course.
@katharmonic Looking forward to your marathon! You have worked hard for this!
@7lenny7 Sorry to hear the verdict, hope you can have an easy surgery and quick recovery.
3.1 miles on trails today, testing out my new Salomon Speedcross 4's that I got at the REI garage sale. These are basically the opposite of my Altra Timps, they have really tall lugs, a serious drop and a very narrow foot. They feel really FAST and responsive on trails - I love running turf in them - the only negatives are is it's exhausting running up hills in them, and I tested them on pavement and quickly decided, no, not a road shoe at all, they feel downright weird on pavement. We took 35 minutes on a stretch of trail that usually takes us about 37, so they do seem to be good for speed. Also, I tripped badly but didn't go down, the super grippy feet helped me stumble and stay upright. I think where they really shine is running on the boardwalk, which can be treacherous. The lugs are very aggressive but surprisingly soft, and they feel super solid on loose sand, turf, mud, and slimy boardwalk. I also like that they make different muscles work than the Timps, it's good to have a change.
My husband was also trying garage sale shoes, he has new Saucony Peregrines. He's been running in a cheaper Saucony shoe from Academy - Excursion I think - before trying some Brooks, can't remember exactly which ones, that just didn't work for him at all and gave him black toes. So back to REI the Brooks go, and so far he's loving the Peregrines.
One other thing we tried today is silicone toe protectors. I have trouble with my feet slipping forward in my shoes and bashing my toes on downhills on trails. These are little toe cap protectors you wear under your socks. They feel very weird at first, but didn't bother me after I got used to them. I just wore them on my long middle toes. And they seem to have successfully protected me from toe bashing. Of course it's possible the new shoes wouldn't have given me black toes, so it's not a real test yet. The real test will be if I can wear my Cascadias without having problems. My husband wore his on his already-black toes which he could barely stand to wear shoes with, and he says he didn't feel anything at all, no pressure, no bumping. These are definitely going on for longer trail runs.
It's autumn so the local track team is practicing again. Today the gentlemen lapped us in a herd about three times, and the third time, a young man cheekily said, "Hello again, how are you this fine day?" And I said, "Old and slow!" and the bunch of them cracked up.7 -

Ive been looking at a half marathon out by Jackson Hole, where apparently if you get lost in the wilderness, you might get rescued by Harrison Ford. Might make having to eat your own shoes worth it...
You know he is not as young as he used to be... might not be as good at the rescue as you would like.
Yah - he crashed his plane at the OC airport here It might still be worth it though!2 -
@MegaMooseEsq - congratulations! and on no breakfast too!
@LaDispute57 - I looked at that picture and thought no way and then closer and saw the people running up and thought OMG he had to run up that! DNF is nothing to hang your head about - you started, you ran, you persevered through on a tough course... So much more than so many could or would have done! Awesome job!!
@7lenny7 - sorry about the toe but I am glad you got it checked and it is fixable! I love the pictures of Kody! If we were closer I would definitely take him along with Hobbes - assuming I was able to run too!3 -
And home after my trip to the big smoke. I'll show you the pics when I get to see them if you want.
Annoyingly, I twinged my lower back during the shoot, twisted suddenly in the seat. Now I'm getting left sided sciatic nerve issues. Nothing major, just a bit of numbness and sharp electric pain walking up hills or stairs - only mild but annoying.
My usual stretches aren't working (deep glute stretch). Any suggestions? I'm about to go to sleep, maybe that will help6 -

Funnily enough as I read the initial comment about getting rescued by Harrison Ford, my immediate thought was "knowing my bloody luck he'd crash the plane looking for me"
@Avidkeo oh no hope it feels better in the morning!
Had a really nice short run this morning, which I think was my last run under 5k until after 'the big race' apart from during the little taper. Actually, I'm running a 5k race on Sunday which from looking at the course is really only 4.8k, so my inner obsessive came into play this morning and insisted I did 3.5 kilometres instead of 3 to make up for the expected difference then. Wah! Anyway, the clouds had cleared, it was a nice cool dry morning and it got light as I ran. They've finally cleared most of the mud from the path beside the river (only took them two weeks!) so I managed to get down one side of it to the beach and back up the other and duck watch as I ran :-)
In other news, the fundraising site I'm using send me into total panic last night by sending me an email letting me know (in case I'd forgotten, obviously) I'm running a half marathon in 48 days. OMG I'm running my first half marathon in just 48 days!!!! Why does that sound so terrifyingly sooner than the 6 and a half weeks I knew about? lol silly brains.

If no one volunteers, there are tutorials online I can use to figure it out. I may not be able to get to it this week, though.
Download GPX, search-and-replace the time, e.g. from "<time>2018-10-19T08" to "<time>2018-10-19T14" if you want to shift it by six hours. You just have to pay attention/think a bit about what you replace with what.
Or, what should be a very easy alternative to doing it manually if it's just about shifting to a specific start time: https://gotoes.org/strava/Add_Timestamps_To_GPX.php
Select the correct GMT start time, add the tickmark to "time shift", and pick "UTC" from the bottom of the list in the Time Zone dropdown menu. Then you can upload the gpx file and download a corrected one (or "connect" with strava and have it uploaded there automatically).
But I'm not sure if the "ran together with" would still work after that or not.1 -
@7lenny7 Just read your race report and then read about the - I've forgotten what it's called already. Major respect. Heck, rest well, you've deserved it, and get better soon!
@LaDispute57 Good gawd man. As a person who has a trail race this weekend, I looked at that photo and quaked in my Asics. Kudos for making it really far into the race...5 -

Awesome. I will try that!1 -
No run today, lifted legs this morning. Have an easy 5 miler planned tomorrow as the last run before my HM this weekend. Friday is a rest/travel/packet pickup day. My folks figured out that they will be in town for the race, not at my brother's in FL as previously planned/assumed. Very excited as they have not been to any of my races. Tomorrow's goal for the 5 miles is just to run, no lap timer, no watch. Will have Strava recording but it is going to be a strictly music run.
Have exceeded goal for the month already, and am looking at the most miles since I started back to running this year. As a perspective for me, I have a friend who runs religiously 5k/3 days a week. At the end of this month I will have matched his mileage for the year despite starting to train seriously in June. We chuckle about it every time we compare notes. Would love to have his pace, sub 9/mile but as the weight continues to come off and I continue to train I know I will eventually get there.
Have an awesome hump day!8 -

I'm falling behind this week. Skipped planned runs Mon. and Tues. After running hard for the Trail Ragnar last weekend, I seem to have gained 7 lbs. of water weight and it still hasn't come off. I did an easy recovery run on Sun. evening and perhaps need to do more of those.
The edema seems to be in my organs (I can tell my stomach area is bloated) and is not rhabdo (I'm not seeing kidney symptoms like dark urine). I just can't explain the bloating, but I can't keep putting off running.7 -
C25K W4D2 done. That first mile is really hard, but the second is a lot easier. I think I could run longer/farther but am sticking to the plan. My left calf especially is sore and tight.6
-
@7lenny7: Sorry I’m not closer or I’d totally give running with a buddy a try.
@shanaber: I’ll take my chances with Old Harrison. . I didn’t have to run on an empty stomach though - I’d packed an apple and bites, which is my usual pre-run food and probably a better bet than greasy cheese and sausage anyhow.
Sad day today, though I’m honestly feeling pretty okay: we had one of our dogs euthanized yesterday after a long year of increasing deterioration from congestive heart failure. I took him (Bowie) to the vet on Monday and he’d lost more than a pound since July, plus had fluid in his lungs in spite of being in an extremely high dose of Lasix. My husband, who got the dogs a couple years before we met, decided that he wanted Bowie to go out on a good note rather than wait for the collapse that could have come any day, and I agreed. Our usual vet did the procedure, we cried some, got drunk on a school night, and are adjusting to our new normal as a two cat, one dog household. We’re going to miss our buddy but I feel good about our decision.
Puppies with raw hides, which they hadn’t had in years because of Bowie’s pancreatitis.18 -
@MegaMooseEsq What a wonderful picture of Bowie! Sorry for your loss but proud of you for not waiting too long. I had to put one of my cats to sleep some years ago and was crying with my vet, who has known me since I was a teenager when I worked at his office. I made a joke that this must be his favorite part of the job, and he said very seriously that watching his mother die painfully from cancer gave him an increased appreciation for what he does, that it's good to be able to be kind and he is honored to do it.5

@MegaMooseEsq so sorry. I know how pets grow to be a real part of your family, and losing them hurts as much as losing a family member. Remember all the joy he brought you!1

@MegaMooseEsq My heart goes out to you. About 9 years ago, I had to put my 20 year old cat down. She had mammary cancer and I couldn't watch her suffer as she was too old for treatment. I still miss her. Pets are special and Bowie was lucky to have you and your husband to care enough about him to help him not suffer.
I don't know how to do the spoiler, but this was Shasta.

@MegaMooseEsq I am so sorry for your loss. There are no words2

@MegaMooseEsq Sorry to hear about Bowie. One of the reasons I don't have pets anymore is because I couldn't take the pain of losing them.
Did 7k of interval training today - warmup; followed by 7 minutes of threshold followed by 2 minutes of easy. Now up to 117.5k toward goal of 120k.
Have also decided to try some foam rolling. The hardest part of foam rolling is keeping my 66 year old *kitten* balanced on the roller.
Some positive news - after almost a month of participating in this forum I finally figured out it's a great deal easier entering this data on a computer than on my phone.
I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks...7 -
@7lenny7 Sorry about the toe, but the sooner it is fixed the sooner you'll be running again. I bet you will be able to find someone to run with Kody. Who wouldn't want to run with him?
@LaDispute57 That course looks brutal. Sorry about the DNF, but you are still a badass for running what you ran.
@MegaMooseEsq Congrats on the race and nice bling. I am sorry about Bowie. I know from personal experience how difficult losing a pet is.
I took today as a rest day. It is cold and rainy and I just didn't want to get up when it was still dark and run before the rain hit. Tomorrow should be nice and Friday should be too. I may not make my goal this month, but I'm ok with that.4
