Machka- What do I do for fun? (while I laugh hysterically) Like you, my fun "button" seems to be malfunctioning. I did have a nice day on the boat with my brother in law and his wife in September. I also love to spend time with Joaquin. If I had time and $$ my ideal choice for fun is to travel. Just get in a car or better yet, on a plane, and go far, far away and smell new smells, see new places, get new ideas. Most days I feel God really messed up and forgot to give me wings.
Maybe that's partly why my fun "button" seems to be malfunctioning ... I haven't really been able to travel since my husband's accident and probably won't be able to travel for a while.
I love travelling! I've "retired" twice to spend months travelling. We went to the mainland for about 10 days in February, about a month before his accident, and then a quick trip up to the north part of the island in early March, and that was that.
There was supposed to be 4 more trips to the north part of the island and about 3 weeks in Canada, but those never happened.
We did get up north last weekend for the first time since the accident, and it helped, but it wasn't quite as relaxing or fun as I think I wanted. I had to drive which stresses me out. I had to monitor my husband to see how he was doing. And we hosted cycling events which is all right, but it's a planned thing and I like my holidays to be largely unplanned.
I'm longing to spend several months on the road again ... Asia, Canada, Europe ... but at this point, we don't know if my husband will ever be able to travel like that again.
So I'm trying to figure out how to create a "holiday at home" feeling.

Good morning from Brighton and Hove.
My son gave me a portable aerial last night, so we will see if that works until we can get a man out. Might work upstairs.
Must sort out the phone thing. My guess is that when the seller installed cable the wire was disabled or cut. DH only has a dumb phone, PAYG. First thing is to test the in box.

Vince wasn’t happy that I went to WalMart alone in the dark.

Michele... I decided long ago that all the bad people go to bed about 3 or 4 a.m., after the bars close. Even bad people have to sleep sometime! I much prefer to be at Walmart in the early mornings, between 5 and 6 a.m. when there are few people about.
Kim - if I eat any amount of ice cream, I'm in pain and everyone around me knows I'm lactose intolerant, whether they knew it before or not... Have fun with your nephew!
Kelly - you always make me marvel at your strength and ability to deal with the younger set. It was never my forte.
JanetR - the great grands are just adorable, and Dana, your daughter is beautiful.
Rebecca - all my sympathy on saying "see you later," to your son. When both my kids were in Germany, it was a struggle, to say the least. And after he was stationed in Montana, we didn't see John, who's living with us now, for nearly two years. The days fly, looking back, but at the time they left, it seemed forever.
Getting a bit of work done this morning, even though it's an off day, but all the traveling has definitely put me behind the power curve on getting the winter grants completed. Don't want to be working on the house while my son is still asleep, so it's a productive couple hours at a time when my brain works best anyway.
Was waiting until my traveling water gain settled before I decided where I was weight-wise for November, ended up gaining six pounds over this last trip! Not all water, for sure. Really REALLY tired of traveling. Finding a routine is just impossible, and then there seems some conspiracy to traumatize me on the first day of every trip, I swear.
But enough excuses... time to buckle down. My appointment with my doc is next week Friday to get the final x-rays for my knee replacement, which will then be scheduled sometime in the next 30 days after that, I'm hoping the first week of December at the latest. I need to be back down under 180 by the time I see him, and shooting for under 175 by the time of the surgery. More would be better. Motivation is a lovely thing. I need to think about what I want MOST (a quick and successful recovery) instead of what I want MORE right this minute.
And, after the last year, Machka, traveling is definitely NOT my thing that I do for fun. As someone else said, I'm not even sure what fun would be for me anymore, but Rori's definition sounds pretty good. Just not being over-scheduled, over-slated, over-booked, over-pressured sounds amazing. I am looking forward to next summer, as is my husband, and getting a canoe out on the Arkansas river in the early morning. I let him do the paddling (because I stink on ice at paddling quietly and serenely), and just enjoy the ride.
And on a happier note, and sorry to make this into a REALLY long post, but I'm really proud of our son. He took a couple serious financial hits this week, and of course all the bad things always happen at once. But he gave himself two days to wallow in "poor me," then stepped right back out of his funk and is making plans. He's in touch with Oregon State University in Corvallis (he graduated from high school in Oregon, so it's in-state tuition), as they have a program that he's interested in (fermentation science) and is making all the arrangements to get accepted to the school, get started in April, and to get his GI Bill in place before that time for tuition and housing. Considering that less than a year ago, we were dealing with him being suicidal, it's a terrific set of steps for him to make. Planning a future is a major accomplishment, and a really great place for him to be inside his head. Very pleased that he's making rational, supportable, optimistic plans, far enough ahead to put some money away to get there, and not so far off as to seem unreachable.
And, much as I love him, it will be good when it's just me and Corey again, and we can run around the house nekkid if we want to.
Love y'all,
Lisa in Arkansas9 -
Good morning! It's Friday! Whoot! Got to bed by midnight (I think I fell asleep right away, but I woke up about four or five times before my alarm went off this morning at 5:30). Today will be Loooooooong! Kids in my house from 6:30am-11:30pm. I have the day planned with lots of "busy time" and not so much free play for the littles, hoping this will stave off the crazy. Fingers crossed!
Janet- Mia and Layla Adorable!
REbecca- YOU need to relax and soak up the energy, presence, light and life that your boy gives. I know every hug you give will be giving him the needed love and energy to get him through these next months/years. Putting my arms around both of you!
Allie- Oh those long days back to back with an early shift are hard! Hang in there! If you have to skip the memorial party, don't stress about it. I think we (individuals) tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make a showing at things like this, when in reality, most mourners don't remember who they saw and spoke with because everything in their brains is all a jumble at those times. Sending prayers/vibes for strength and peace!
Machka- I have had many vacations at home. I usually tell my hubby in advance that "I am not going to cook this week" or "I am only cooking a couple of big meals", I then plan "vacation-y" type of meals like grilling or seafood, I buy ingredients for Bloody Marys (my favorite vacation beverage because it is technically a salad in a glass) or a couple of bottles of wine, AND the pièce de résistance I/we take walks whenever we want and where ever we want. Watching people walk/run past my house at 9 or 10 in the morning, to me, is the epitome of luxury! At 9 or 10 in the morning I am usually knee deep in children. Another thing that makes me feel like I am vacationing is when I build the sandbox in my kitchen. The night before the kids arrive, after I have the sand in place, I put a lawn chair in the sand and just sit with a beverage and my toes in the sand. Sometimes I throw some Bob Marley music on and just close my eyes and chill for a while.
Have I shared this here before? This little meme seems to pop up in front of me whenever I am in the middle of a pity party. I think I am going to print it to hang where I can see it every day.
Well, I better get busy! One kiddo here; more on the way. Love and hugs to all who need them! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

That does sound nice. But especially the part about "Just not being over-scheduled, over-slated, over-booked, over-pressured sounds amazing."
I don't know when that's going to happen for me. Every time I think I'm catching up 16 more things get added to my list. I'm on the "do 2 things, add 16 to my list" plan!!
All the best with your knee!

I am fortunate to live in a beach town ... I just need to start scheduling some time to enjoy it! And it would help if summer weather would stick around for more than just a few hours at a time.
My husband has been working on our yard so that now it is a place I want to be. We had a BBQ the other week, and I actually did relax for a little bit. It was really nice to be out there. I think we're going to have to do that more often ... once a week would be nice.
And he's starting to walk more ... we made it all the way down to the beach, along the beach and back the other day. It'll be nice when it starts to warm up in the evenings more regularly to go there more regularly.
But one of the reasons I have to get away from home is because when I am home, I'm constantly thinking ... I need to do this, I need to do that. I have a lot of trouble putting it out of my mind.
So ... I am thinking of going away for a weekend in November. Not far away. Just 1 or 2 nights. My husband and me, and maybe a nice little cabin somewhere.

I find fun in all the routine things I do in my life. I love having a schedule and since I've retired from full time work, I have time to schedule all the things I want to do. What's fun for me, may not be fun for other people and vice versa. My fun things include walking the dogs and listening to audio books, riding the exercise bike while watching TV and knitting, and line dancing. I no longer like to travel except short local drives with my husband, and I really don't like social events. Yes, I'm an introvert.5

I am also an introvert.
This evening, I took, sorted through, processed, and uploaded some photos while watching TV. That's a bit of fun for me on a Friday evening. Much rather do that than be social.
I love cycling outside, but I'm not getting as much of that in as I used to. I'm doing a lot more running, but it isn't quite "fun".

Karen in VA know it took a great deal of pluck to call your GS concerns to your son and DIL's attention. And it takes real pluck to be GS's Learning Coach. Well done!
Heather such deep bath time conversation topics! How old is Max?
Dana sounds like your DD's ex is acting like a looter...
Kathy from Portland you are so right about honestly logging everything. It's key.
Barbie your kitchen remodel sounds just right! Any idea how long it will take?
KJ peed on your couch??? While I'd love to come play at your house, it would be best on a day when you have no other kids. What's going on that Justin needs to be with you to so late at night? What is his normal bedtime? "salad in a glass"
Janetr precious babes!
Kay I hate it when the lawmakers word the propositions so that No means Yes and vice versa. As for candidates, I've had to hold my nose before...
Lisa hope no work travel is scheduled between now and your knee surgery. Enough is enough!
Machka Is the Peace Rose's scent as lovely as the bloom? Love the kitty Tshirt, esepcially their eyes. Your garden is very appealing but the weekend away sounds like just what's needed.
Rori safe travels. Any room for KJ and me in your suitcase?
Jo in IL con VERY grats on the size 12! Keep on, keepin' on!
Another thing that makes me feel good, is twice weekly T'ai Chi at our activity center. Great group of people, good movement. Time to dash!
Lighter, lovelies!

Hello ladies. Y'all sound like a lovely group.
I started on my weight loss journey on August 6, and I'm down 48 pounds as of today. I still have a long way to go--over 80 lbs more is my goal. I'm counting calories, cut out adding salt, cut sugar, cut coffee, drink water almost exclusively, and watch portion sizes.
My goal for last month was to stick with it, put air in my bicycle tires, and start adding in some deliberate exercise. I did that, but now I have to convince myself to do it regularly. For trick-or-treat night I gave out a LOT of candy. It was raining and kept a lot of kids away, and I was determined not to have any leftovers. I gave away candy by the handfuls, which was so much fun! I allowed myself one tiny little Reeses cup, and didn't feel deprived.
I came into August at 264 pounds. I had type two diabetes, high blood pressure--which was un-medicated--and mild arthritis. I hadn't been to a doctor in over 5 years. I was a heart-attack or stroke waiting to happen. I couldn't climb stairs without getting winded, and it always hurt--both ways. I wore a size 22--or just really stretchy 20s.
In just three months I've lost 48 pounds, I've been to the doctor and the gynecologist--I'm menopausal now, and I've had my first mammogram ever. I'm now on blood pressure medication, but hope I won't need it forever. Blood tests showed I had markers for heart or liver disease, but a second test a month later showed them within normal range. My cholesterol is normal, but my HDL is too low. It takes three months or more to change that, so I'm confident it will get better. I need to schedule a colonoscopy--which I've been dreading.
Goals this month: Schedule colonoscopy, see my new doctor for a follow-up, ride my bicycle when the weather allows, schedule a dental cleaning--since I missed my last one, and try to eat more veggies.
I'm Cari in North Texas8 -
Cari - Welcome! I had my first colonoscopy last month. It truly isn’t a big deal. You get a great nap! One thing I wish they had told me about the prep, you will be freezing, at least I was. The RN told me it was because you are flushing everything out of your system so quickly your body can’t regulate temperature as well.

Let's do this again. On my profile I track my weight each year I've been on here. I notice my lowest was 160 and today I weighed in at 202.4. Never thought I'd see 2 as the first number on my weight. In my youth I stuggled to stay over 120. I never weighed 145 until my 50's and here I am in the 200s. Shocking. So here was my journey and my current horse for those of you who know, I always post a picture of my horse.

Hi there,
Barbara - Max is 7.
Got more done today. The plumber came, so the washing machine and dishwasher are working. :drinker:
Managed to ring the telephone company, so they are coming tomorrow afternoon.
Rang an aerial company, so they are coming to give us an estimate this afternoon.
Then we went to the dump /tip and got rid of loads of paper and boxes.
Then we went around the corner to the local shops and met a few more shopkeepers.
Then DH went up the road to explore the other shops. A more down at heel area.
Now I'm talking to you, having hung up the laundry.
I've unearthed the Instant Pot, so it's veal stew in cider tonight.
Plus we got all the boxes out of the utility room so I can put things in the cupboards. Hooray!
Knackered.
Much love to all, Heather UK XXXXXX6 -
(((Sue in WA))) I hope the news from your DH’s biopsy is good.
Machka: Your lives have been changed due to your husband’s health. Don’t give up on adventures. They can still fit into your lives, although things will be a little different. Perhaps you and your DH can find new ways to have fun together, such as camping, hiking, or walking on the beautiful beach near your home.
Heather: Moving is exciting and also full of things that need doing. I hope you find the right people to help you get things sorted out to your liking. (((HUGS))).
Lisa: I agree with your advice to Michelle. Early mornings at Walmart are an ideal shopping time. I love your DS’s decision to go to Oregon State on his GI Bill benefits. He’s got a great plan for life after the military.
Wessecg: Welcome back again! Stick with us for encouragement and support.
More home improvement work today. They’ll be putting interior trim in the bedroom and bathroom where the windows were replaced. YAY!

Good morning ladies....I just joined this site on Oct. 28th in the hopes of losing some weight (any weight) because within the last 3 yrs. have gone from walking to walking with walker due to arthritus and degenerative discs in spine because of my scoliosis. I am 68 years old and have not budged in my weight of 262 lbs since late 40's. It has been extremely frustrating to the point of I had given up...thinking it was my lot in life to be this way..at 5 ft. 3 in. and chunky. I keep thinking was it having 3 children in a span of 5 yrs, is it the low thyroid (on meds) was it starting menopause at 40 or what. I am trying again with low carb way of eating trying to stay under 40 gms per day and upping the fat intake and according to this site I am consuming 1630 calories per day. I must say I am really enjoying this site...keeping track of consumption is easy and I am actually eating more than I have been. I am also learning that foods that I thought have no carbs do have them such as yogurt (which I love) and milk and some veggies. I am having trouble wrapping my mind around all the fat one can have and should after all these years of having been told "low fat". It is also nice to have conversations with ladies my age as I think our metabolisms have changed. Any tips you can give me on various foods or if you have the same conditions would give me a boost to keep trying. I have lost 1 lb. but don't know if it's the water I've been drinking or a fluke LOL. I will only weigh myself once a week to see if there is any change. We live in a condo right across the street from a recreation centre so my husband and I go 2 times a week for water excercises (would you believe 30 min. of water jogging is 472 cal. loss) and try to walk (all but slowly) in a park below us with my little dog and walker for atleast half mile as often during the week as weather permits. Yet no results in the weight. Maybe with the addition of this way of eating will help. Thank you for your "ears" and any advice. Although it's been raining for 2 days the fall colors this year are in their glory here...we are surrounded with gold colors. Going on a bus trip on Sunday to Soaring Eagle in Mount Pleasant, Michigan so I am sure I will be seeing more spectacular foilage. Mary from Ontario in Canada6
-
Hello Mary from Ontario, I'm new here too.
I'm 5'2" myself, and mostly sedentary up until recently. MFP says I should have about 300 calories more than another app said to eat. I use the tracker but shoot for the lower number, and it has made a big difference. If you're eating 1630 calories a day, it might be too much for a fast weight loss. I think even when I get to the maintenance point, I'll still be much lower than the average. That comes from my height, and the fact that my body wants me to put the weight back on. I also overestimate my calories. I figure it's the difference between level cups and heaping or rounded cups in serving sizes. Just yesterday I ate a steak at a restaurant that lists calories, and it came with a big scoop of seasoned butter--which I doubt was figured into the listed calories. Overestimating means I eat less, and gives me some wiggle room if I want an extra glass of milk at night.
One tip I live by, is to always have food I can eat on hand. Being hungry with nothing healthy in the house is an invitation to eat something I know I shouldn't have. When I eat a salad--at home or out--I keep the dressing on the side, and only dip the fork. That gives me a little flavor, without drowning it in a hundred extra calories or more. I'm also drinking water--LOTS of water. I've gotten to the point that I'd rather have it than any soft drinks or tea. If you keep a glass on hand, it's easy to take a drink when you think about it.
Your health issues will make it harder, but it's not impossible. Funny, the more you exercise, watch what you eat, and lose weight, the less your issues will bother you. It's like a cycle: they keep you from exercising, but they'll get better with exercise. It's frustrating. Your age is a factor, but don't be fooled that you're too old. I used to work out with women your age, and they're fierce! Think of all you've come through in your life, as well as creating three new humans. You can do this!5 -
Heather - I am just thrilled for you that everything is coming together. Cannot wait for some "street shots" of the shops you pass by and scenes of your new neighborhood. How neat the grands are now much closer - is your older DS closer now as well?
Katiebug - WA State has several initiatives on the ballot as well = the more I read them, the more confusing they get coupled with the TV ads and print ads which we bend over to avoid but some come through. Luckily I have a friend who works for a state senator and she lives and breaths this stuff - she sends me her recommendations with reasons why. I don't always agree with her and often vote differently, but at least she filters thru the gunk. New ladies, by the way, we try real hard to steer clear of politics and political controversy as Kay mentioned. We get enough of that stuff on the rest of the internet. General comments are welcome of course.
Love the photos of all the kids in their Hallowe'en costumes.
Welcome new ladies - I see several of you are posting a lot right off the bat and that is GREAT!! Jump right on in!
An idea for any of you who are stalled - Fasting. Really. There's a great BBC documentary on YouTube by Michael Mosley = Eat, Fast & Live Longer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ihhj_VSKiTs&t=3081s Plus Mosley has a website for the 5:2 FastDiet https://thefastdiet.co.uk/ and his book is very good as well.
Another source is Dr. Mercola: https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2018/01/02/fasting-mimicking-calorie-restriction.aspx
There are many ideas and they all seem to work. Some of us in this group restrict our eating to perhaps an 8 hour window. Some get success by restricting calories a day or two per week and eating normally the rest of the week. That BBC documentary was a great introduction.
Have a good day!

Welcome Mary and Cariwaldick.
I am so thankful it is Friday. A friend of mine is coming into town to watch her daughter's play, so I am going to meet her there tonight and watch Sweeney Todd. I am looking forward to a night out with out the boys and hubby.
Speaking of, hubby is going to Switzerland to teach next week. :-( Happy for him, but sad that I can't go too. I do have to still work sometimes. Lol
Thinking of you all and wishing you a wonderful start to November.

Got the TV working with my son"s portable aerial. We had to take it right up to the top of the house to get it to work. It's two of our favourite programmes tonight so it's good timing.
The aerial man can't come until tomorrow.
Making yoghurt in the IP now.
Nervous about the Parkrun tomorrow
Lanette - my elder son lives in Nottingham in the middle of the country. I see him on U tube often when he does his video blogs for Airsoft Action. Haven't seen him in real life since January. He seems happy.
More relaxed now. Still in utter chaos in the house, but we are warm and comfortable.
