    Michele Where I live, there is Shingrix vaccine held in reserve for second doses. If you didn't already do it, inquire if there is another list of people waiting for their second dose that you can be on. It might be a shorter list.

    We bought ourselves a new dishwasher that eill be delivered in a week or so. Merry Christmas to us. Have gift for DGD and her mom to share—a real sewing machine. I hope they will enjoy it together. It will be delivered to their house but not gift wrapped. We have a gift in mind for our daughter & son in law, too. We still need to finalize that purchase. Still thinkin sbout little boy gifts for the three grandsons. Ages are 4,2,&1. Ideas welcome. two boys are daughter’s & one is our son’s.

    After two lovely, cozy, stay-at-home days, during which I didn't meet even minimal step goals, I'm almost looking forward to going into town tomorrow for T'ai Chi and groceries. Cleared two boxes of books and much stuff from the pedestal table. Was so emotional and headachy just couldn't face the last box. Did get a picture up, though so I'll try to hold that positive thought ;)

    My brain cyst is benign.

    Now for the rest of the story ...

    I've been under some stress this year ... so much so, that my body has been negatively affected. I've been going to a series of Drs (specialists) to treat things.

    One specialist is a dental surgeon who diagnosed me with TMJ. He also sent me for an MRI and the MRI picked up a brain cyst. So, a couple weeks later (last week), I went for another MRI.

    Today I saw my dental surgeon to have the TMJ treated, and he confirmed that I do have a brain cyst, but he is certain it is benign. He will be having a chat with a neurosurgeon friend just to confirm that there should not be any need for treatment.


    Meanwhile, the muscles in my jaw and sides of my face have been pumped full of botox to relax them, and thus treat the TMJ.

    Nov 1 - smell. My roses. :)
    Nov 2 - technology. Social media and staying connected with family and friends.

    Nov 4 - food ... cheese. I ate a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches when my husband was in hospital. They were my comfort food. Also cheese has calcium which I think I need. Unfortunately, cheese does tend to be a bit high in calories so I shouldn't eat too much of it. But anything cheese-y is comforting. :)
    Nov 5 - sound. I like listening to the waves and the birds, but I think the sound I'm most grateful for today is my husband's voice. Just the fact that we can talk to each other again. :)
    Nov 6 - "What in nature are you grateful for?" ... That's hard to narrow down to one thing. Oxford dictionary describes nature as "the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth". I am grateful for all of it. I find that getting out into any sort of nature helps to relieve stress.
    Nov 7 - "What memory are you grateful for?" ... Another one with so many choices!!! Recently, I've been grateful for two memories. 1) June 2017 ... my husband and I had a wonderful visit to Canada and did several things to make great memories ... hiking, cycling, visiting my family. I clung onto those memories during the months he was in hospital. 2) When I was 9 years old, my family moved away from where my grandmother lived. One of of the last days there, my grandmother took me to her window and showed me a full moon outside. She told me that on every full moon, we could both look at it and know that even though we were far apart, we were both looking at the same moon. That's a memory which has stuck with me all these years, and every time I see a full moon, I think of my grandmother. She's 97 years old ... but not doing so well ... so I've been thinking of her a lot. And I've also been very glad that my husband and I were able to see her when we visited Canada in June 2017.
    Nov 8 - "What book are you most grateful for?" That's easy ... The Bible. :)

    Nov 9 - "What place are you most grateful for?" This is not an easy one for me because I don't have the sense of "home" that many people have. I've moved too much for that.
    So ... I've had to give this one some thought. What place?
    Well ...
    I'm grateful for our current house. It's comfortable enough. It's not very big so it's fairly easy to manage. And it has a great garden which my husband has been able to work in since returning home from his accident. It is also close to a couple beaches, which is nice. :)
    Nov 10 - Taste! Hmmm ... salt. In the "Do you crave sweet or salty" discussion, I fall on the "salty" side.
    As it happens, I have a diminished sense of taste and smell for whatever reason, so I divide foods into the basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour or bitter, and from there it's harder to distinguish precise flavours. Although, I do seem to have some odd tastes like, for example, meat and tomato taste metallic to me, and I don't like that. If I salt them well, the metallic taste goes away and they taste salty, which is OK.
    Then, one of the side effects of my husband's accident is that he has lost most of his sense of taste and smell. He has regained a little bit, and they say it should return very gradually. But he'll comment that dinner has no flavour, and I'll think, "It just tastes salty to me. Is there supposed to be more flavour than that?"
    Nov 11 - What holiday are you grateful for? Christmas!!! :)
    I've always loved Christmas. I even picked up 3 Christmas CDs yesterday. I like having a decent amount of time off ... not just one day ... so I can get things done. I like all the decorations. I like the music. I like the services and celebrations.
    Nov 12 - Texture. Smooth. Very, very smooth. Clothing with no texture. Textured clothing is unwearable. Smooth clothing is good.
    Nov 13 - Abilities. Right now, it would have to be organisation. While I feel like I'm in the midst of a chaotic whirlwind (and have been for the past 8 months) and I don't feel very organised, surprisingly enough, stuff is getting done.
    Maybe I should include things like endurance and tenacity ... "skills" I've honed from my long distance cycling carrying over to "real life".
    Nov 14 - Sight. What sight am I grateful for? The ever-changing view out the window of our house looking over the bay and the surrounding hills. Right now it's all grey and misty but it still looks good.
    Nov 15 - Season. The season I am most grateful for is summer. I love summer. I'd love it if the year were divided so that there was 1 month of winter, 1 month of spring, 2 months of autumn, and 8 months of real summer weather. We're coming into summer here and I appreciate each and every summer-like day.
    Nov 16 - What about your body are you grateful for?
    Sometimes I think ... "less and less" these days because I'm literally falling apart.
    But ... I'm grateful for my legs which are one of my main methods of transportation.
    Nov 17 - What knowledge are you grateful for? -- The tacit knowledge of cycling. Being able to ride a bicycle. It has taken me all over the world. It's how my husband and I met. It is stress relief. And it is part of my husband's healing process.

    Nov 18 - What piece of art are you grateful for?
    That's a difficult one. I've taken an Art History course, and enjoyed it very much. And I like going to galleries. But I haven't really felt a connection to any particular pieces.

    My husband's hugs!! This was something I missed so much when he was in hospital!!

    The obvious choice would be my husband, and I am grateful to have him in my life still. However, I have been very grateful for my parents who have been so supportive through the challenges this year.

    My taste in music changes with my moods but I've been listening to this one a lot this year ...

    I have some of it memorised, and have done since I was about 6 years old. But I can hear it over and over.
    Nov 23 - Tradition.
    I had to think about this a bit because I don't think of myself as a person with many traditions, partly because I don't have children to pass them on to. But I do have a few around Christmas which I've inherited from my parents:
    Decorations on or very close to December 1.
    Open Presents on Christmas Eve.
    Read the Christmas Story, mentioned above.
    Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day.
    Listening to Handel's Messiah.
    Watching Scrooge with Alistair Sims.
    I'm grateful for all of my Christmas traditions ... they make December a special month. :)
    Nov 24 - What challenge am I grateful for?
    Ha! I've had a lot of challenges to choose from so I had to think about this one today.
    I decided on this ...
    The challenge I am grateful for is my education. I'm a perpetual student. I've attended courses of some sort just about every year since I was about 5 years old. I'm grateful that I've been able to do that. It has been challenging ... sometimes more than other times. And although I've not actually gone directly into the fields in which I've been educated, it has all contributed to get me where I am now.
    And it keeps me thinking and learning.
    Nov 25 - What moment this week are you grateful for?
    Finishing my 10K run. I slogged my way up the hill, and as I came down the other side toward the finish line, my husband was there waiting for me with a big smile. :)
    Nov 26 - What form of expression are you most grateful for?
    I wasn't sure exactly what this means, but I think we can make it mean whatever we want. So the form of expression I'm most grateful for is the written word. That includes books to read, posts I type, emails, letters, and everything. :)

    Nov 27 - What small thing that you use daily are you grateful for?

    I use a lot of small things daily, and I'm thankful for them all. It's hard to decide! Toothbrush, lipgloss, undies, water glass, phone ...

    I think I'll go with glasses. Without them, I couldn't see! I could still read a book, but I couldn't work on my computer, see to walk around, drive ...

    Yes, I'm very thankful for my glasses.

    Well ... the fact that the brain cyst they discovered in my head is benign is pretty good!! :)

    And thank you all. :) I am pleased and relieved about last semester's course.

    I hope the course I'm currently in goes as well ... or at least reasonably well.

    Because it is held over such a short time, there isn't much time to do the homework, so I've booked 2 days off next week. My plan is to go to the university and get some stuff done.

    That's actually not a bad way to meet people ... be introduced around, and then while everyone else is mingling, kind of stand back and watch. :) Or chat to one or two people and get to know them a little bit. Then on the "first day" you're not walking into a place full of strangers.

    I've fallen behind on posting (Booo!!) but I'm right where I want to be with my jogging (Yay!!)

    Gratitudes:

    24. Challenge - Many years ago I took a university course where I had to give an oral presentation. I was petrified, but I got up and did it. Surviving that experience essentially cured me of stage fright, to the degree that I now make a goodish living out of lecturing.

    25. Moment this week - My husband and I drove out east of town Sunday afternoon to look at the moon, which was just past the full. Moonlight on snow in the High Arctic is one of the most beautiful things I know.

    26. Form of expression - Singing. Hands down, it's singing.

    27. Small thing used daily - My blender has a detatchable base. When I've made my morning smoothie, I can unscrew the base and clean around the blades and in that otherwise inaccessible crack at the bottom. It makes me happy every time.

    28. Small thing that happened today - It snowed! It snowed hard and fast and thick. Before I knew it, a good six inches had accumulated. This will make jogging much more enjoyable, because the streetlights will be reflected, and the craggy snow-clad mountainsides on either side of town will show up in the stray light.

    I'm preparing for my trip to New Hampshire. One thing I've had to do is figure out how to get from the bus stop to my parents' place. Where I'm going, there aren't any taxis. My parents don't drive anymore, and I'll be arriving so late it feels like too much of an imposition to ask one of their friends to come pick me up at the bus stop. My sister isn't coming with her car until the next day. So, reluctantly, I've downloaded a ride-sharing app. I can't test it in Svalbard (no drivers here). I'll hope for the best, and if it doesn't work, I'll just walk. It's only about 2½ miles. Of course I will have been awake for 24 hours and with jet lag it will feel like 4 am, so I hope I don't have to walk.

    #28 - Small thing that happened today - I'm grateful that my own weird internal alarm makes me get up every morning early, as my husband has to leave for work by 5:15 a.m. And I get to kiss him goodbye every morning...

    About an hour of trolling around the Internet, then it's in the shower I go, and off on my day trip to meet my new crew. Tell y'all about it later, or more likely tomorrow.

    Machka First, I am sure you will do well with this semester's coursework. You are smart and persistent, and you will get the job done.
    Concerning your Botox for TMJ: I occasionally suffer from TMJ due to clenching. I was considering Botox. I knew that my excellent dentist had TMJ which was helped by Botox. I asked him if he thought it would help me, so he updated his story for me. He did get Botox and it really helped...but not permanently...so he finally went to an oral surgeon who recommended Physical Therapy. He had a postural issue having to do with thrusting his head forward (common enough in the general population but rampant in the dental profession). Once he made a new habit of pulling his head back to properly align his cervical spine, his jaw relaxed. It really helped his TMJ & clenching.
    Sort of like Squatty Potty and the anal sphincter... :D:D:D

    Irish Terri - You said you were thinking how you might make one yourself. From what I recall of the decorations you made for your daughter's wedding, you WILL figure it out, and it will be gorgeous! :smiley:

    I forget who else said they might like to adopt the tradition -- there were a couple of you -- but you might be able to find stars at IKEA. This is one instance where IKEA's Swedish cultural imperialism might be considered relatively benevolent.

    Barbara: I look forward to yoga, and I imagine that you feel that way about Tai Chi. I take yoga classes 2 or 3 days a week. They really help keep my body working. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Sorting out and clearing up is really hard work. :star:

    Machka: I am so sorry that your body is having unpleasant symptoms. After all the stress you experienced over your DH’s health crisis, I can understand why you’re having problems with your own health now. I hope your doctors are able to treat your situation effectively and you feel better soon. :heart:

    The dog goes to the groomer this morning, and I plan to keep on getting Christmas decorations up. The live trees won’t come in for a couple of weeks, but I can put out a number of artificial mini trees. I put them on the ends of the piano, on the desk in the entry way, and in the downstairs bathroom and upstairs bedrooms. It may have some connection with my German ancestors.

    My husband got up early and made a fresh pot of coffee. Bliss!

    Hello! :D<3

    Had a lovely day. My friend arrived just after 11 and I showed her round the house. We still have several rooms with lots of boxes in them, but the main socialising area is fairly civilised now.
    I served pea and ham soup for lunch along with some seedy, gluten free bread. Afterwards we had a quinoa salad with cold salmon. Then fresh mango. Not bad for catering for a coeliac. :D
    We went out for a walk along the sea front. It was blowing a gale, with HUGE waves. Marvellous! B) We stopped at the ice cream shop, had an ice cream, and then walked back. I showed her my local shops and DH bought a bunch of kale for dinner.
    I was pleased that DH was in a sociable mood and they talked together more than I did!
    Then she left for the 2 hr drive home.

    Just had a short nap and have read the local mag that drops through the door.

    Hope we don't get too much rain tomorrow. DH is off for lunch with his cricket friend, in a pub half way between them. My Portsmouth friend is coming on the train to Brighton station, where I shall meet her. I'm planning to go to a well known seafood and fish restaurant in the Lanes for lunch. I may have oysters. :D
    I really need to buy some warmer clothes. Our last house was very well insulated and I rarely needed more than a thin cardigan over a long sleeved T shirt. This place is warm enough, but has cold spots that lose heat quickly when it is very cold. I have been wearing my only sweater, which is very light, along with a long cardigan. I think I need another thinnish sweater at the very least and maybe another cardigan. I can't wear wool, which is why I am low on sweaters. Has to be acrylic. Wool just itches me to death. Maybe my friend will help me chose something if the weather is bad and we can't do much wandering about. It is forecast to pour with rain. :s

    Today I was so grateful for the roar of the stormy sea, knowing I have a nice, warm house to go home to.
