So this is my dilemma. I had a chicken recently start wandering into my yard. She looks exactly like this picture. I have no idea where it came from because we do not have any chicken coops on my street. I own a small business of rental/motel cabins located on my property and one of my regular guests has named her Ruby. She popped in and out for a couple of days. Now, she is staying and sleeping in one of the trees. My random guests started feeding her. Now, I find myself giving her canned corn, raisins, suet and wheat bread. Our temps right now are low 30's during the day and 20's at night. 1-3 inches of snow predicted by Friday. Our typical winters often reach 20 below zero actual. There are some farms in the area that may be more equipped, but I've grown a bit fond of her. We have large droves of turkey that go through regularly, but this is the first chicken.
Of course I am worried about the weather, her nutrition, and her social and mental state. Her health & happiness is very important to me. I know at one point she will likely be slaughtered and that is really bugging me to the point of no sleep. However, she can't be happy now alone like this without other chickens and without a warm well-lit coop which I don't want to build because of my business. Any advice, ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated. I am an unselfish lady and an animal lover and will do what is best for Ruby.
I loving having yard chickens. They eat bugs, are fun to watch, and provide us with fresh eggs. For my husband and me, three chickens provide enough eggs. If you don't have zoning laws against keeping a few chickens, you could put up a small, moveable coop with a roost and egg box. She should voluntarily go into a coop at night, if you put her food there in the evening, and you can close the door. You can find really cute ideas for small coops online. A warm light bulb or heat lamp could keep her from freezing in the winter. At my house, chickens not locked in at night are vulnerable to raccoon and possum attacks. Both varmints can climb trees, so trees aren't the safest place for chickens. You may decide to get a few more chickens to keep her company and provide you with more eggs. Contrary to what many believe, you don't need a noisy rooster to get eggs--only need a rooster to produce baby chicks. I like sleeping late and prefer not to have a rooster. I hear proud cackling from the chickens when they lay their eggs, usually one a day, and it makes me smile. Don't be surprised if there's a little henpecking at first. Chickens do have a pecking order. I like to purchase pullets (young chickens) that are just starting to lay eggs, rather than baby chicks. If you can't accommodate Ruby, I hope she finds a good home.5 -

11/04 162.8 Thatβs more like it. Happy to be back for another round with all you (weight) losers! I ate about 2 cups of popcorn at the theater yesterday morning, and expected it to punish me, but I ate well the rest of the day. I was privileged to attend worship at my home church this morning! That meant missing a morning concert with my group, but Iβll be with them for two more concerts before this day ends. Iβll be on the road in a couple of hours. Thor, my GSD, and I are looking forward to a walk tomorrow morning.

11/04: 153.8/Birthday today. Celebrating losing 25 lbs. This milestone birthday was a kick in pants that I needed to do something, because it is only going to get harder to lose the older I get. I still have more to go, but very happy with my progress it is the best gift I could get.10 -

11/04 - 157.5 went up 2 pounds. Uuugghh! I knew it was going to be up. Yesterday I stepped in the scale and saw 155 for the first time. Officially down 20 pounds, so I overindulged and treated myself with a lot of food and a couple of beers. My biggest problem is I love to celebrate anything and everything with food and beer. Lol, had an amazing dinner with my hubby and probably had 1 to many drinks. Well worth it, no regrets, but trying to learn how to balance my celebrating. Drinking lots of water and back on track today. Iβm sure it will be back down by tomorrow or the next day.

11/04- Couldn't weigh in this morning because I was at grandmother's house! I did go to a wedding party yesterday but half of my plate was salad and I only had a little bit of rice. The rest was sabzi (cooked spinach) and protein. Pretty proud of controlling myself tbh. Nonetheless, rice does make me retain water so maybe weight went slightly up (but I don't feel guilty at all because I haven't had rice in a while so I'm proud of myself and being reasonable!). Had a light salad for lunch which was satiating, delicious, and calorie-appropriate so will be under calories today so hopefully that'll help undo any damage due to yesterday but we'll see. Won't beat myself up if not, but staying focused the next few days.

11/04 - 78.2kg, still incredibly bloated from my wild Friday but at least the scales came down a bit from the huge jump. Ready to smash this round and have no more cheat days until Christmas!
11/05 - 77.3kg, finally dropping down to where I was before Friday!! I have set myself a goal for the week to meet my step goal every day (I slack off on my days off). Iβm going from Sunday-Sunday, met my goal yesterday and very close for today with still many hours of the day left

@FarmerCarla Thanks so much for all the info. I will find out where to check with my city regarding permits etc. I have already started to look up some of those videos you mentioned. I will quickly try to find a solution suitable for winter. If nothing works out with the city or the coop, I will certainly find her the best home that I possibly can. I appreciate the help so much. My first thought is to keep her and get a couple more for company.5

11/04 149.8 last night I binged and got in very little exercise, mostly Pokemon go hunting. I am not worried about the gain because I asked for it. I suspect tomorrow's number will be higher because today wasn't looking good either...but that's it!!! No backwards motion just forwards. This week will be better for sure!! 11/05 - 246lb - as annoying as it is to see the scales up Iβm pretty sure itβs water weight from the weekend as I wasnβt really eating the right things however wasnβt going over my calories. Hoping to see this drop off in the next few days! This ties in to my goal of 243lb as well as believe the 246 is actually slightly inflated following my bodyβs retention trend. We will see low cal day today and going to try and make sure I get in my exercise
