Look at you being awesome! I started with the C25K. It’s a great training plan.5 -

Anyone know of an easy way to plan? I wont be able to make a 12-16 week plan, but would like to do a few weeks or a month.
I suppose i can just do a memo plan...
What do you use?
@Elise4270 What are you training for?
Come back really. I'd like to just make a return to running plan through January. Then with any luck plan a half late in the year... Unless the doc wants to fix this labrum tear... Then I just need a regular running schedule to keep me engaged.
I'm trying to get away from "do i feel like i can tolerate a run" kind of schedule.5 -
I am doing my Christmas shopping (hubby doesn't like to shop but lets me spend so it's all good) and need input. What is one piece of running gear, gadget, dohickey, thingy, whatever you can't live without and why?3

I'm currently sitting in the car on my lunch break while my husband ducks into a running store to buy me more running socks (smart wool, crew length, shoe size 9, surprise me with the colour - I gave him very clear instructions LOL). Good socks are a game changer.
I also have a thin, fleece-lined water resistant running jacket that works for me in -1C and also -25C because I can wear it with just a t-shirt when it's less cold and with multiple thermal layers when it is more cold. It has a million pockets.0 -

Grab like 5k or 10k training plan and just do that?3 -

I love my Darn Tough socks and have three pairs in my shopping cart I have two Eddie Bauer water and wind proof jackets that I love but I do wish they had more pockets!0 -

Good shoes!
Just bought new ones about a month ago. I'll save that for my birthday in March!0 -

I'd vote for my unlined windbreaker as my single must-have item (leaving aside broader categories like "shoes" "socks" and "something to keep my butt warm"). Much like the jacket @sarahthes mentioned, I can wear it in a wide range of temperatures by varying the layers underneath. I do most of my runnings around medium-sized bodies of water, so wind is always an issue! ETA: It's also bright red/orange, so the extra visibility is nice.0 -

I hadn't thought about that. I can make my own plan, i just wanted a tracker or something that would let me make it digitally. But, garmins beginners 5k or 10k may be a good start.
Thanks!2 -
@PastorVincent Already on that one - stocking stuffer item purchased.
@MegaMooseEsq I have an unlined, breathable rain jacket I got from Eddie Bauer. Is that similar or should I invest in something different?0 -

I used an app called seconds pro to build my plan when I first started. It was pretty easy to use and allowed me to play my own music but still hear the prompts to run, walk, etc. I'm not sure if that is what you're looking for but it was great for me.

Wind is more of an issue for me than rain so I don't think of it strictly as a rain jacket but it sounds like basically the same thing.0 -
@MegaMooseEsq I think they are similar. I use it when it's raining and/or windy. One of my favorite things I've bought is a wind/water resistent lightweight fleece jacket. It is perfect for running in cold weather. It is breathable but with a longsleeve base layer it keeps me warm without overheating. I put the rain jacket over top one day when it was in the low 20's and realized quickly that it was too warm.1

@Elise4270 I create my own training plans in Google Sheets. Each row is a week, then the columns are the days of the week and a column for each week's total.
I put in my planned daily miles then go back and update it with the actual miles.
If I'm motivated I also use different colors in the blocks for different run types.2 -
@Elise4270 it's easier to show you:
Green is easy pace, yellow is a trail run, blue is a race, and I also use tan for hills and a pinkish for a tempo run
The column ofter total is the per increase of miles from week to week.
The chart for monthly miles needs updating.
Miles completed are in bold.
Weeks/months completed are in the pinky/peachy color
When I was better about doing glute work for my ITB issues, I put a G in instead of miles.
here's my past And here's what I'm planning on (hoping for) once I can start running. I still need to color code it. Gray is my downtime from surgery. Numbers in gray are minutes of walking

December goal: 60 miles
12/1: 5.11 miles
12/4: 6.25 miles
12/5: 3.11 miles
12/9: 9.02 miles
12/11: 3.12 miles
12/12: 3.12 miles
29.73/60 miles completed
Another really good run today at lunch. I ran the same run as yesterday for 3.12 miles. I wish I had more time to run further at lunchtime, but I just don't. I did have negative splits again so I felt pretty good about that. This morning when I did yoga Garmin said I burned 468 calories. I'm pretty sure that was a fluke. It was a bit of a challenging flow, but I'm pretty sure I did not burn that many calories. I was wondering what I would get for my run at lunch today. I got 254 calories which was pretty close to what I would expect. Yesterday I got 217 for basically the same run. I don't know what the deal was this morning, but I'm glad it didn't give me another over-inflated burn.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
10/6/18: Old Rip 5K Run - PR 29:43.5, 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K - 30.05 official time - 1st place female/3rd overall5 -
@7lenny7 yay! Gotta love a good spreadsheet :-)

Soooo... (some repeats probably)
Some ideas for winter runs off top of my head real fast:
Merino Wool Socks (Darn Tough get my vote)
Merino Wool Hat that covers ears
Baclava (I use UA's Infrared one)
Flashly Light things (Nox vest, arm bands, etc)
Head/Waist lamp
Water Proof Headphones (I like the Plantronics Backbeat)
Chapstick
Polarized Sunglass (for snow running - glare can be killer)
YakTrak (I have a set not used yet)
Hand Warmers
Foot Warmers
Touch Screen compatible gloves (preferably ones that convert to mittens)
--note having a second set that can be changed into when the first is wet is great!
Gift Card to running store
Waterproofing spray for clothes and shoes
Also - Entry into the "next big race" whatever that is for the runner.
Plus normal stuff like cold gear running shirts, pants, and the like.6 -

Yeah, the problem with mine is that I started out simple and kept adding components bit by bit. it's a bit messier than it could be. I should really start another one from scratch and clean things up.2 -

Or did you mean balaclava?

This is a great idea for longer winter runs, as is a spare beanie or buff. For my longer winter runs I might carry 2 extra buffs or beanies because of my excessive sweat, which makes them freeze solid after a while.

Flipbelt. Easily holds phone, Gu, etc.. without any bouncing and is very unobtrusive.1 -
I have an ear ache and a fever today. Super annoyed to be missing my run (especially as I didn’t realize WHY my ear hurt until an hour ago and already adjusted my eating habits to compensate and will now be over my mark), but I also don’t want to make it worse trying to be stubborn about it. 😑
I’m just going to pretend those extra calories are going straight to my immune system to help it beat the snot of the offending germs.
Trying not to focus too much on all these running gear recommendations as it would be nice if just one of my hobbies didn’t turn into another way for me to spend inordinate amounts of money. 🤣 I already read about several products and thought “Oh that’d be super handy!” Doh! I thought hey, I just need good shoes for this, great. Now I have a balaclava and a headlamp, plus wanting to buy a reflective vest because it’s always dark when my husband gets home these days. And a wind breaker / rain jacket would be nice when I run down by the river and what about blinky lights for my shoes and oh what about- OOPS.8 -
Shaved about 20 secs per mile off my pace today compared to the same run a few weeks back! I’m definitely feeling good about my progress. Just under 3 miles this evening. It warmed up just a little, so temps were in the 60’s, which is great for me! I have grown to appreciate cold weather running this year, but it’s nice to get a little break and just be able to go without having to think about whether I need a layer or need to cover my ears.
Also, my 2019 race list is getting longer! I decided to try to find a few additional races, including some trail runs, to keep me working towards something. With such a big break between the 10k’s I had planned in the beginning of the year and the half in November, it would be too easy to slack off. I think having some races in there will keep me going. And they are fun! Now I just need to find someone to do them with me! I have exactly 1 running friend, and she is one of those crazy people that does Ironman! She doesn’t even get out of bed for less than a half marathon. I’m not quite at that level...I need a slow, shorter distance running friend!

Today I got to run 6.63 miles. It was cold and a little clammy (see clothing issue below) and awesome. I ran around one lake and was feeling pretty good so I decided to run around a second lake. Then I remembered that the route would be longer than usual because the city doesn’t clear the walking lanes during the winter and combines everyone on the bike lanes, which are generally outside of the walking lanes. So I had a moment or two of “omg what did I do I’m too far to stop now but it’s real cold” but I made it, and at a surprisingly good pace, too. Go me!
One clothing issue (because it wouldn’t be a cold-weather run without a clothing issue) - clammy elbows and not-great core temperature regulation. I was wearing a tech shirt from the Mankato half marathon (probably Brooks but I don’t want to dig it up to look right now), with a long-sleeve cotton tee shirt over it (something I got free for donating blood), and my windbreaker over that, and one of those two bottom layers were just not doing their job.
I’ve had issues with the base + mid-layer combo before. My base-layers are all long-sleeve tech shirts, two from races, one from Baleaf, and two from Heines. For mid-layers I had some very structured insulated shirts I bought at the TCM expo but they are a little too small right now (plus were generally too heavy), so I’ve been experimenting with long-sleeve cotton shirts I already own to try and avoid more purchases. The base-layers are mostly a little large as I bought them in fall 2017, if that makes a difference.
Anyhow, say that I’d rather not replace everything right now, what do people think is more likely to be the issue - my cheap base layers or cheap mid-layers? I’m definitely not getting that warm-and-dry-but-not-too-warm sweet-spot. I’ve had some luck wearing tanks for a little extra core warmth and sleeves for the extremities and didn’t do either today so maybe that was some of the issue. This would be a lot easier if “winter weather” didn’t cover quite so much ground!
@debrakgoogins: Yeah, I could probably use a lightweight fleece like that, but I’m really tired of spending all my money on running stuff, and if anything this winter I’ve definitely been leaning towards too hot rather than too cold.

12/1 – 18.15 partly paced run
12/2 – 8.24 easy
12/3 – rest day
12/4 – 6.51 easy with a few fartleks
12/5 – 6.31 easy
12/6 – Life Happens

12/9 – 8.37 easy with a few pickups
12/10 – rest day
12/11 – 7.09 warmup, speed work, cool down
12/12 – 8.01 easy
December running total to date – 74.96
Nominal December mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Recover from the strained hamstring. Work back to running faster only as the hamstring allows. Run Freezeroo #1 as allowed by my physical condition on race day, with a blind eye toward age group standings. Have a solid base of 40 miles per week by the end of December to start Boston training.
Today's notes – Got out to run a bit past 3 this afternoon, in the heat of the day: 35° F, cloudy, ENE wind 6 mph. Had clear roads and shoulders, but there was still plenty of snow on the grass and sidewalks were hazardous. Just keeping it easy felt great, so I took the option to add distance near the end of the run to make 8 miles instead of 6 or 7. Nothing hurt, nothing went wrong, and I'm one day closer to being done with dodging Christmas traffic.
