Hey all. I'm feeling a lot better for having had a couple of sleep ins this week. I think im run down and am looking for to a month off work starting next week. I plan on having another day off again tomorrow, and don't expect any running over the weekend. But I'll be getting runs in most days on holiday, I'm travelling around the country and have arranged runs with others I've met in a Facebook group, and a couple of park runs. I'm really looking forward to it!
I've kinda given up on all other goals for the year. I'll start again fresh on 1st Jan. Its just too challenging the next 2 weeks.
@Avidkeo Great plan. You've done brilliantly this year, and it's time for your off-season.
You may have just inspired me to plan mine.2 -
Thank you everyone for your Christmas gift suggestions. I had quite a few things on your suggestion lists but picked up some things I didn't have. The two things I am most looking forward to are my Trailheads fingerless glove/mitten combo and the flip belt. I am also going to look into getting prescription polarized sunglasses. I used to have some but my prescription has changed.6

Spreadsheets! The first tracks all my workouts while the second tracks running only. I've been using google sheets for ages but am slowly transitioning to numbers. The codes in orange on the first spreadsheet are how I track FitnessBlender videos. The hyperlinked dates on the first spreadsheet go to the videos while the links on the second spreadsheet go to updates here.

I'm not sure that I added my monthly mileage correctly in my last post...finals week brain is real...
2 quick-ish miles on the treadmill at lunch today. It was a much-needed stress relief break in the middle of the day. Scheduled for 4 miles on Saturday - eek!
15.5/38.0 miles total for December so far4 -
@Orphia and @MegaMooseEsq thanks for sharing the spreadsheet screenshots! I cant wait to go home and nerd binge!4

December goal: 60 miles
12/1: 5.11 miles
12/4: 6.25 miles
12/5: 3.11 miles
12/9: 9.02 miles
12/11: 3.12 miles
12/12: 3.12 miles
12/13: 5.11 miles
34.84/60 miles completed
I had a great run this morning. All of my runs this week have been really good. I got up early before work and ran 5.11 miles. It was 53F feels llike 50F when I left the house which was the high today. It was really nice and I'm so glad that I went early. For one thing I have more time in the mornings and I was able to run 5 miles which is really what I like to run on my "regular" run days. When I run at lunch I really only have time for about 3 miles. The other reason I'm glad is because the weather is really gross now. It was clear at 6 this morning and really pretty at 8:30 when I went to work, but the temperature is falling and now we have mist/rain which is supposed to be turning into a wintry mix. It sucks too because it won't really be freezing so we won't have nice snow, but the wind chills will feel like it is freezing so even if we do get snow it will just be snow in the air and not on the ground and it will mostly just be yuck. It is supposed to start clearing up by around 9 tomorrow morning. I really hope it does. We are leaving after lunch tomorrow to go to see my son. He is graduating from college on Saturday. I am so excited about it. I will most likely miss my long run on Sunday, but I am ok with that. I planned to miss it. That is one of the reasons I set a low goal this month. I knew there was a lot going on with a wedding, a graduation and Christmas and so I planned around it.
2018 races:

12/1 = sick
12/2 = sick
12/3 = sick / 3 miles
12/4 = 10 miles

Ha! You people are so much more organized than I am! I don't have a spreadsheet. I only kind-of have a cobbled together training plan. I have to put my races on my phone calendar to remember when they are. Strava keeps track of most stuff for me. I think I must be the most unorganized runner on this thread!
December goal miles = 150 / 62 miles to date

A bit like me writing all appointments in the family wall-calendar and just forgetting to check every morning what is scheduled for the day? It turns out however, that the mere thing of putting it all down helps it fix better in my brain.

Today I got to run 5.61 miles around Lake Harriet. Although I’ve run a route past the lake a couple of times since moving, and the Reindeer Run last weekend was on the road around the lake, I haven’t actually run the path around the lake from my new place yet. It made for a nice loop, though I needed the Peregrines to get there as the sidewalks along the cemetery have never really cleared - too much shade and not enough foot traffic, I’m guessing.
Today I did the sleeves + racerback + tech shirt + windbreaker combo and it worked fine, though it was almost 30 degrees out without much wind - practically summer! I think the variable that hit me yesterday and today was the humidity. Usually winter is very dry here, but we're having an odd stretch of freezing fog right now. The fun never ends!
I ordered another pair of sleeves and two mid-weight shirts with higher collars - no cotton this time! I think I thought that so long as it wasn’t next to my skin it would be okay, and to be honest they did work fine a couple of times, including the race last weekend, but I can see how I was pushing it in the damper weather like yesterday. And I guess didn’t really want new glasses that bad, since I keep spending money on running stuff. One day I’ll have everything I need, right? Right?

Not even remotely ma'am. I let my apps keep track of my running distances for the month and have never really followed a training plan for any of the races I have run. I know I need to incorporate more speed work so I guess I need to read up on beginning speed work, suggestions anyone?
Have been running in the 32F weather when there has not been any rain/icy road patches(because car vs runner). Averaging about 5 miles per run at just over 12 minute miles, sometimes negative splits, sometimes not. Next years goal is to improve speed wise.
Note on the cotton stuff for running: When I started this journey back in 2013 all I had to run in was cotton, they didn't make running shorts big enough for me. Body Glide quickly became my best friend, but it also encouraged me to work on form with hips and shoulders in alignment, feet pointed straight and all that. These past 6 months have been better as far as chafing(thanks for the NipEaze suggestion ) but I believe my form has suffered because I have not had to worry about chafing as much in other places d/t having "running shorts and tech shirts". just my couple of pennies worth.

Oh, you better believe I have a spreadsheet too. I have one organized by year to keep track of steps, miles run and walked, other exercise, etc. I have monthly miles graphed as well. For half/marathon training I take the plan from our coach and put it into my spreadsheet with the speedwork plan and the long run goal for the week, and then enter what I actually did. I love seeing all the data. During marathon training I really liked seeing how the plan laid out for me each week and counting down how many long runs were left. I consider myself my own research subject so the data is so interesting to look at over time.
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
12/01/18 :::: 7.7 :::: 7.7

Snuck out of work a little early today - the sun was out and temps were a little warmer. At it seemed warmer although it was just still below freezing. I met a couple of friends, one for the beginning and the other for the end so the time went quickly. By chance it sums up to 40.0 miles for the month so far. That puts me just slightly behind for my goal of 100 miles but I'm catching up.

@MegaMooseEsq
I noticed you're considering the dc half in may. I'm signed up. I enjoy the race. It's the weekend before summer season starts but still fun.
And you might be able to meet the Old Girl and Speed Demon3 -

Ooh, I need to record monthly steps / kms run in mine over the years. It's a pain opening the Garmin Connect app or Strava website and looking them up. Something to do on 31 December, which appears to be the one day Garmin gives you a figure for the calendar year's totals.0 -

It was 48 degrees for my run. I have obviously completely forgotten how to dress for such a heat wave as I was pouring streams of water off me by the time I got back after 12 miles.
Due to the tilt of the Earth and all that it is now full dark when I am on my return run through the park. There are no lights, plenty of shade trees, and lots of potholes and other trip hazards plus bicycles racing down the trail. So I run with flashy armbands and a waist lamp. Yet I am constantly coming across walkers and runners dressed in all dark clothes with no lights at all.
Please do not be stupid like them. They are asking to get hurt. Light yourself up so that you have a chance not to get hit at the very least.8 -

I have been doing laps on well-lit streets when it’s dark, but my husband runs in the dark like that and I hate it. I track his run on my phone to make sure he doesn’t suddenly stop moving because I’m seriously worried he’ll get hit one day and he just doesn’t think it could possibly happen.
My headlamp flips down at the ground, which i love so much (he won’t wear it for whatever reason). If it’s dark I also wear my reflective leggings and Winter Soldier hoodie, on which the entire left arm is reflective in such a way that is blazes with the power of a thousand angry suns if headlights hit it.
I saw someone with what looked to be a lit up vest walking their dog, not just reflective. I totally want one of those. Getting tired of washing my hoodie as it needs special prep and as nice as reflective wear is I’d like a couple more blinky lights. 🤣6 -

//30kph made it an interesting challenge - definitely a much harder workout than normal.
@LadySaton Hope you recover from the aches and fever.
I have so much running specific gear that I picked up a old beatup dresser from the Eco-Recycle center for $15.00, gave it a $5.00 paint job and now have it sitting in the laundry-utility room area as a running specific dresser for my gear. In season gear in the top 2 shelves - out of season in the bottom shelves.
I think I could have run today, but I’m being extra cautious and hoping I get time to run tomorrow before my niece and nephew come over for the evening.
I have an empty drawer from finally getting rid of my too-big clothes and soon another empty drawer when i can transfer the just-a-bit-too-small clothes into my closet. They really want to be filled, but other than a couple of safety minded purchases and smaller leggings as needed I’m going to make myself wait and make sure I want to do this long term. I’m going to run a 5k with a friend in April and if I still want to keep running after that I’ll let myself buy some fun gear. 😁3 -

12/13 – 5.56 easy
December running total to date – 80.52
Nominal December mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Recover from the strained hamstring. Work back to running faster only as the hamstring allows. Run Freezeroo #1 as allowed by my physical condition on race day, with a blind eye toward age group standings. Have a solid base of 40 miles per week by the end of December to start Boston training.
Today's notes – This afternoon it was a beautiful 45° F with hazy sunshine and minimal wind. So of course I didn't run; I went to my annual eye exam. Where they dilated my eyes. No problem getting home, I have good sunglasses that go over my glasses so I can drive. But they aren't stable enough to run, and it would have been transition to dusk anyway. So running had to wait till after 6 PM, when my eyes had mostly recovered. By then it was dark, and down to 35° F.
Thought about how bright the bathroom light was, and decided to run residential streets in my neighborhood to have less traffic to deal with. Got to the corner 0.4 miles from my driveway, and saw Christmas lights, so I made an unplanned turn. Ran a lot of familiar streets in a different order than usual, and really enjoyed seeing all the Christmas lights. Only encountered a couple of visually impaired* drivers, and by the time I found the first one my eyes had recovered so I was okay.
I got back to my driveway a bit short of the distance I would have liked to run, but physically ready for a pit stop. So I only got about five and a half miles in, not 7 or 8. But it beats the heck out of zero miles, and it was a pleasant run anyway. I'll take it.
*I can tell the driver is visually impaired because he (gender assumed, can't see him) drives with very high powered headlights on high beam, but still needs to be a half car length from the car in front of him in order to see where he's going. There are a lot of visually impaired drivers out in December; there will be fewer in January.

Coldest run yet but I survived. Your trick of keeping my phone close to the heat of my body worked @PastorVincent.

@MegaMooseEsq
I noticed you're considering the dc half in may. I'm signed up. I enjoy the race. It's the weekend before summer season starts but still fun.
And you might be able to meet the Old Girl and Speed Demon
That would be really neat! It looks like a great race, I just don't know if I can manage two trips out of state next summer, even if one is fairly close to home. We will see, though. I'd love to meet you and your team!PastorVincent wrote: »It was 48 degrees for my run.
Light yourself up so that you have a chance not to get hit at the very least.
Shaking my head at why your husband would think being hit by a car couldn't possibly happen. On the list of things most likely to physically injure a person, it's pretty high up there. I've been hit once myself and I bet I'm not the only one in this group who has. I have friends who've been hit, and friends of friends who've been hit and killed. I've never been a driver or a passenger in a car that hit someone, but I can think of a couple of very close calls.
All that said, I love the sound of your hoodie!4 -

It’s more he doesn’t think it can happen *to him*. Which, he has actually been hit by a car years ago to boot - thankfully he was uninjured - he was simply mad because he spilled his Mountain Dew when he landed and then the car sped off. He seriously boggles my mind, but I think he believes he can be careful enough to avoid it (while in my opinion not actually taking any precautions to avoid it).
Yes, though, it’s a great hoodie. Sub par zipper but I swear I could help bring planes to the runway in it. 🤣3 -
1210-5.0k total-21.3k, goal-60k
Yeah... so I ran 5k half a week ago, and then was hit by a stomach bug. Fever, vomiting, the works. Recovered just enough to go on a business trip. Went. Just caught up with all the posts. Will go running tomorrow.
It's good to be alive.13 -
