Missing Wendy, Mary in AZ, KJ, Lenora, Terry, Rye ;{
Whew finally caught up (a few pages a day) since last week's trip.
Yvonne "as a child who practically lived in the library"... that was me. We had no A/C at home so spent summers in the library all but the lunch hour when they had to kick me out.
Katla "...if karma rules are applied, may he come back as a cat" and that as a cat he poisoned, with full awareness of what he's done, to give him a chance to repent and learn.
Felicia belated best birthday wishes!
Kay "not be that symmetrical" that's great news!
Rita holding good thoughts for your new plan. Dread the day my MD confronts me (or Joe) with our sugar addiction.
Michele what a wonderful surprise to have Jess home early for Christmas! Some Wal~Marts carry dry ice.
Sharon, you GO girl!
Cari "live life and not eat it" hmm... now there's a great idea!
Lisa WOW and hubba hubba! "RBF" Never new there was a name for it, describes my workface perfectly! Happy for you and Corey, your happy smiles say it all.
Lanette so glad your local appliance store had the speed queens. Just curious, knobs or touchscreens? Great news no shoulder surgery required. Whew!
allie maybe "Better" is next year's word?
JanetR "won't need any surgery ..." Halelujah! ditto what others have said about your smiling pics.
Rebecca your advent calendar!
Barbie ditto Lanette's thanks for your "taking sides" explanation. Thought of your tears of joy (and almost emulated them) at line dancing Thursday night.
Michele when Vince went on Medicare your insurance was "accidentally" dropped? Glad you're getting it fixed/transffered, and Thank Goodness nothing serious happened to you in the interim!
Karen in UK Happy Birthday!
Machka thought what Karen in VA said ;} Glad you'll take a little time off uni and are finally getting the medical/dental attention YOU need. Your first day off sounds perfect, good sleep, run, walk, strength then fun bicycle ride with husband. Now that's how to relax and have fun!
Suebdew jalapeno peanut brittle? Sounds yummy, do you have a favorite recipe?
Goals: What Machka said about the unexpectedness of life really resonated. We need to set goals in order to move forward, but need to cultivate flexibility to deal with life. Where I get into trouble is when I try to CONTROL things so I can meet my "goals" or intentions. Just yesterday DH and I had a little spat. I was telling Joe (before he had any coffee) that I'd taken a ham hock out of the freezer for him to have with this can of beans for his lunch, but the hock was hard as a rock so I was thawing it on the chopping block. He asked me to put it back in the fridge and let it thaw safely and he'd have it in a day or two. "I'm making stir fry tomorrow, so eat it TODAY." I said in my do-it-now voice. [sigh] Well of course he resisted defensively. Fortunately I backpedaled and eased off my plans but jeez, I wouldn't want him to tell me what to eat and when...
Finances: like Karen in VA said "there is a potential power dynamic that neither of us cares for". As I've always made 5 or more times what Joe has, I've always paid our household and health care expenses. Joe's social security $$ is his to spend as he wishes. He contributes $200 toward our mortgage, buys food that I won't, his brandy, pays for his van parts and other amusements. He's never been a saver, fortunately my work made it easy for me to contribute to a 401K automatically, it inspired me to start a "contingency" savings account for the stuff that comes up. Back in 2005, just after our bad patch, I broke my right wrist and had to have surgery. He helped by writing out the checks for the monthly bills. His brother once told me it was a real eye-opener for him. The one thing I never NEVER EVER want to do is to lord my earnings differential over him. I was blessed with more education and nurtured into a more ambitious mindset than he. So I guess in a way, "my" money is ours and his is his and I have chosen to be totally ok with that.
DNA testing: I'm very interested in everyone's experience. As an adoptee I'd "like to know" but feel my father's side people would shudder at contact... ;}

I don't know if you've seen the movie, Christmas with the Kranks, based on the book Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. Each time I watch it (they play it just about every year here), I'm rooting for the Kranks to go on their cruise. I always feel slightly disappointed when they don't.
M in Oz
It's on now.
We've been watching Christmas movies this evening. We started with National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, which I have on DVD, and then turned to Christmas with the Kranks on TV.

Good morning all! Happy Saturday! I am here! I have been skimming through everyone's posts this week, but haven't had time to chime in. Just daycare/holiday week craziness! I can't remember the last day I posted...hmmm...Update on last week: Our field trip to the other provider's house to decorate cookies together was a success. The kids got along and shared/played nicely. Decorated and ate their cookies and my kids favorite part (of course) was the transit ride there and back! lol Each day has been filled with crafting, singing, and activities for the holidays. We don't have any snow right now, so we have been able to get the stroller out and get out for walks every day! Practically unheard of for Michigan in December. The other walkers have been enjoying seeing the kids out, though. For the past two weeks, others have been greeted with "Merry Christmas! " from my kiddos! It gets a smile and a chuckle out of everyone.
So...my Monday-Friday day shift kids are finished for the holidays. I have Trentin today 11:30-11:30, and tomorrow 2:30-11:30; then that will be it for other people's children in my home for the next ten days! (Pretty sure I hear angels singing every time I think of it!)
Happy birthday to Felicia and Karen UK!
Allie- Hugs to you on your new employer! Here's hoping he keeps the current office staff!
Beth- It does sound a bit to me as if your brother is thinking of his own comfort/ease rather than the entire family's. I am sure your dad knows the difficulties this "trip" would create for you and doesn't expect you to attend. I would say, go if the weather cooperates and meet them for a meal; but if the weather is bad, call and take a raincheck on the visit with dad.
Heather- So glad things are sorted with DH and I am doing the happy dance that you get to have this one on one time with your grandkids! Love the pajama picture! They are all so darling!
Karen VA- I love those toys! I have the Melissa and Doug Sandwich Shop, Cutting Foods, and Pizzeria set. The kids love them. I also have stacking cups and shape sorters. That dump truck shape sorter is FANTASTIC!
Finance-DH and I pool our incomes. In the past he usually earned more than I (though not much more). We are now, just over a year of my income as the only income. He still is in charge of paying the bills, but as his memory gets a bit worse, I imagine that will be added to my tasks of things to do. I am finding that I have more of a say in how our money is spent and it has caused a bit more of a kerfuffle. A big part of it is his lack of income and guilt (on his part) about that. I am finding that when it comes to $$, my brain looks at it the same way as it does weight loss. I am not working this hard to have nothing to show for it. Finance= I work hard, we get things paid and get $$ saved. Weight loss= I work hard and pounds/inches come off. I don't mind the hard work, if I get results.
My daughter Lauren hopped on Viber with me yesterday morning and let me know that our gift for Joaquin arrived and they got it set up for him, already! Tim and I ordered him a little preschool sized art desk. It has little cubbies for art supplies, books, etc. and the table area can either be flat like a desk or slanted like an easel. She said Joaquin sat down in the chair right away and spent about an hour putting things in the cubbies and taking things out. He is not quite two, so I reminded her that he shouldn't be "creating" any art without supervision; otherwise his art will migrate to the walls and floor and furniture and himself and...
Over the past week/week and a half I have been thinking about my word for 2019. Like Kay, the word FOCUS has been speaking to me. So that is my word. 2018 was "resilience"; 2019 will be Focus.
Well, I have to fly. Grocery shopping and errands before Trentin arrives. I will be back to commenting daily, now that things have slowed down a bit. Sending lots of love, love, LOVE to you all! All of you ladies make my heart feel fuller and make me feel like more of a complete person! Love you all to the MOON AND BACK and wish the best as we charge into the holiday week. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)5 -
Machka- I loved the book Skipping Christmas; but was not overly fond of the movie Christmas with the Kranks. lol I think, it just didn't pan out the way my mind envisioned it. My movie day/night will be Christmas Eve. Note to self: Buy some wine and egg nog for movie night. lol KJ0

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
Thanks for the comments on the pics, all. And Heather, yes, the weight is staying off... But I think if I could lose even a quarter of what's on my butt, it would be 20 pounds gone in one swoop...
Sitting in my newly rearranged office, typing with a cat on my lap--who did not come home until about 1:30 this morning, at which point my husband got up out of bed, as she was yelling outside our door. Out "catting around," I'm thinking (sorry, I love bad puns). And yes, she's spayed, so there will be no unfortunate reminders of her adventures.
Just trying to decide what to buy in our morning trip to the store that will feed six people for three days, as my sis and her two grown daughters are coming in tomorrow afternoon and staying until Christmas morning. They don't celebrate the holiday (long story), and they know we don't, but all have time off, so Elizabeth (the older daughter), called yesterday and said "Hey, whatcha doin the next few days, and we'd love to come see the house!" and they'll be here for a couple nights.
My sis hasn't been here since before we brought the furniture in, so it's all new to her. We'll keep 'em busy on a couple projects that we've got going. Love the fact that they feel like they're always welcome, and pleased it will be comparatively warm, no rain until Christmas Day. Much like Heather, makes me feel blessed. Egg the cat, on the other hand, will not, as she's not fond of people, so she may well be staying in the woods after they get here, and until the coast is clear. Funny, weird, cranky kitty.
Love y'all!

It is a little odd ... and I do keep wishing they can go on their cruise.
One thing that amazes me in movies like that and National Lampoon's Vacation, and others of a similar era are the houses. They're massive!! And yet it appears to be a one-income family.
Where I live, those houses would go for 2-3 million, and actually it's rare to see any that big.
Of course is just a movie!
Machka in Oz1 -
For Christmas I asked that DS that I helped buy the house comes to the Christmas Eve service I where I sing. That is my Christmas present.
I have been so busy with the house buying it is hard to believe Christmas is almost here. I added an Angel to our outdoor Christmas lights. She looks quite lovely!
My mother never liked Christmas. She was either sick or crabby. A long time ago I made up my mind to decide what it was what was important to me around this holiday and not over do like she did. Hence the reason I do not feel I have to make thousands of cookies. She picked up that tradition from her mother. It died with me.

Good morning! I hope you don't mind my butting into this group. I am hoping that being able to reach out to other ladies in the 50+ age group will help keep me inspired and motivated. I have been wrestling with my weight my entire adult life. I wish losing weight was as easy as my doctor and husband this it is...
Last week, I went to the doctor for a painful UTI and before he even discussed my UTI symptoms, he began lecturing me about my weight. Frustrating, depressing and frankly, infuriating!!8 -
Christmas prep is on track. I still need to clean my hobby room, wrap presents, vacuum the carpets again--dog is shedding. I've got three more cookie recipes to make; my daughter decided she wanted to give away cookie gifts. I went grocery shopping today, and got anything that could be bought early. I'll likely be hosting 14 for Christmas. That's 14 of the most well-fed guests ever.
I ate two gingerbread cookies as I decorated them--the calories leak out of the broken ones, right? I sampled too much icing, but at least I didn't lick the bowl.
Oops forgot to post this after I got interrupted. Lost another pound this morning--even after eating mac-n-cheese and a couple cookies.6 -

My granddaughter and I made a full day of it yesterday, nails done in Christmas flair, hair styled and some shopping. Then dinner out and off to the Nutcracker Ballet which we both fully enjoyed.
P.S. This picture is in our Florida room, therefore the low "funky" ceiling.
Love you my friends,

Happy National Cookie Exchange Day!
"Christmas cookies date back to Europe in the Middle Ages, when biscuits with ingredients like cinnamon, ginger, and dried fruit were made. By the seventeenth century, different types of Christmas biscuits were popular in different European countries. The Dutch brought Christmas cookies to the United States in the seventeenth century. Many cookie cutters were being imported from Germany by the end of the nineteenth century, which led to the proliferation of cookie recipes in cookbooks. Christmas cookies made with cookie cutters often depict candy canes, angels, stars, Santa, and Christmas trees."
Karen - Your Christmas holiday sounds so lovely. I hope you and your friend enjoy your seaside vacation.
Lisa - You and Corey look very happy. I'm glad you had a good time at the party.
Margaret - Giving away your cookies sounds like a great way to enjoy the baking without the consequences. As you said, Christmas goodies have a way of stretching into the new year!
Cat - Good work losing 40 pounds, and good luck knockout out the pesky 7 pounds that sneaked back!
Felicia - Is there an experience you could buy for your husband? A gift certificate for a massage, or tickets to an event, a class you might enjoy taking together, etc.? That's what I ended up doing for Philip since we're trying to reduce the stuff load. He's getting a gift certificate at an isolation float spa. (He tried it a couple of months ago and enjoyed the experience. I'm claustrophobic so that's one experience he can enjoy by himself, thank you very much!) As a massage therapist he spends so much time taking care of other people, it'll be nice for him to have some self-care time.
Barbara - Growing up, when I wasn't at the library in summer I could usually be found at the swimming pool. Our house had one big window unit but we didn't use it much.
MrsCot45 - Welcome! My husband is a skinny guy so I can sympathize... he has absolutely no idea why I have such a hard time losing weight or why it's so easy to backslide. It seems like an awful lot of doctors just can't look past a person's weight. Of course it plays a role in our health, but for pete's sake, it's not the ONLY thing!
Yesterday we... well, mostly I... got the living room ready for Christmas day. Philip did help me with the massage chair. We had an old massage chair (the kind with the rollers under the back) that we didn't use anymore and that didn't fit well in our current space. I was going to give it to a friend, but when we got ready to load it into the truck I discovered that it had quit working. We turned it upside down and Philip poked and prodded for quite awhile before deciding that it is probably fixable but not something he wanted to take on. So he helped me haul it out to the curb and I apologized to my friend for offering before I checked out the chair. I guess we just let it sit too long.
Today it's gorgeous out. Philip and I are planning to go to the park for a long walk, but right now I'm sitting here with my right hip just throbbing in pain. Hopefully it'll get better once I move around some more, so I'll get on my feet and take some ibuprofen once I post this.
I don't know about you ladies but even though I love Christmas music I've always hated "Santa Baby." For a version you might be able to get behind, try Googling "Miley Cyrus Santa Baby" (from her performance on the Jimmy Fallon show).

Welcome MrsCot! You've found a diverse group of women who can/will talk about anything--not just weight. The conversation moves fast, so visit often and jump in and comment at will. Some have been hear for years. Some have met their weight loss and fitness goals. Some are still struggling--but not giving up.
Sorry you're getting grief from your doctor. I had one who only cared about my blood pressure, no matter why I was there. If your house is burning, fight the fire before you start worrying about the decorating! Still, you're doctor is right. I know it's annoying to hear it--from everyone--but weight has a lot to do with your health. I've lost 66 lbs since August, and my health problems are disappearing like magic. I've gone from type 2 diabetic to borderline, my BP is down, my cholesterol is down, and my arthritis isn't giving me as much pain. I haven't had a headache in months, I'm sleeping better, I don't sweat as much (like I used to be drenched when I'd do the least bit of exertion,) and I've got more energy.
The good part about losing weight is it's all in your hands. You CAN do it--even after 50, menopause, and years of bad habits. It will change your life.3 -
Cari in TX: I envy your big family that is close by. My kids are far away and DH & I are on our own for Christmas again this year. His health issues make air travel a nightmare for him. We’ll see them in spring or summer, when travel in our RV is possible. I’d better improve my attitude—pity parties are not fun. :noway:
Heather: Your cake is delightful!
Lanette: I love “Champion of my Own Race.” Thanks for sharing. I am copying this for my own use when I need to get out of a pity party.
Lisa: Congrats to Corey and to you!
Margaret: Your comments about cookie exchanges reminded me of times long ago. Mom would take cookies to family and friends, and they’d bring cookies to us. I don’t miss the cookies a bit, but I miss the people who’ve passed away. I always liked mom’s cookies best.
Heather: I love the photo of your DH with Max. :flowerforyou:
(((Beth))): I am sorry your brother is so clueless. :grumble: You deserve better. Carol in GA has given you excellent advice.
Felicia: Your post made me think about DH. I’ve got no gift for him. Hopefully, he has none for me. I need to chat with him about it asap. :ohwell: Our coffee pot is failing. Perhaps a new one can be our gift to one another.
Barbara: [i}“Goals: What Machka said about the unexpectedness of life really resonated. We need to set goals in order to move forward, but need to cultivate flexibility to deal with life. Where I get into trouble is when I try to CONTROL things so I can meet my "goals" or intentions.”[/i] This is good advice for me, too.
Margaret: My mom participated in cookie exchanges. I always liked hers best. DH is diabetic and has numerous other food challenges so cookies are off of our island—and also off of our b*tts.
I have an item mon my Christmas wish list. We need to replace our coffee pot. the automatic brew timer has quite working. I hope we can find one just like it! (except in new working order)

I hope you will become an active participant on this thread. Here you will get suggestions and encouragement but no one will ever shame you or criticize you. I hope you can let go of your negative feelings from what the doctor said, and create a plan for yourself that you can live with. It helped me to plan my meals ahead of time and stick to the plan.

I struggle keeping up without a computer to use, but wanted to comment about the song Santa Baby. I agree I’m not a fan of that song myself. Very seductive images can be conjured from it.
I am finished all of my craft fairs as of yesterday. Today I have a couple of projects to get completed and groceries to be bought. I haven’t even bought my turkey yet. Tomorrow hubby is going out shopping with our youngest so I will wrap while he is gone. We are then going to a friends house for a small gathering.
I feel like I will do a little baking tonight or tomorrow as well.

We had our Christmas today.
Father Christmas was great and we really enjoyed looking round the old manor house.
Lots of fun at lunch at our house. After present opening we had the fruit and chocolate dip with sprinkles. Marvellous.
Then a quick run to the park.
A very good day.

Love that there's a thread for 50+ chicks!
I'm a little late for setting year end goals. However, I participated in a weight loss challenge my boss offered that concluded on December 17th. I came in third, losing 21 pounds in 3 months. I won a day off with pay and $150, which was super cool! I really didn't give it my all because I truly thought I had no chance of placing since they were going by pounds lost and not percentage of body weight. Lesson learned.
January 4th I'm starting a weight loss challenge with four other women I work with. It lasts three months, we each have to pay $33/month and the winning team wins $10,000! 2nd place is $5,000 and 3rd is $2,000. I plan to do my part for the team and hope to reach my goal weight, although I'm not exactly sure what that is, by the end of the challenge. So even if we don't win, I will still have won because this will help me keep my focus to get that last 45-50 pounds off. They also refund your $99 if you maintain the weight loss for some time after.
My word for 2019 is DISCIPLINE. I am striving to be more disciplined in all aspects of my life, from work, to exercise, to food, to home. I don't know if it's just me or if other people are like this too, but I tend to kill it in some of these areas, but rarely in all of them at once. So my aim is to continue to reward myself with lots of exercise and good food for my health, keep my house clean ALL THE TIME, spend less money, and do less wasting time at work on things/people that are not productive.7 -
Heather--What fun you are having with family. Lots of positive memories.
Janetr--You and your granddaughter look very nice.
Got my shopping done after work last evening and now just to get things wrapped. Hoping to get that done this evening or after work tomorrow. I got DH a pair of grinch pj's. They are on piece and furry. I will wrap them and take over to DS's Christmas eve for him to open. Him and the grandchildren there will enjoy that. They think he is a kid like them most the time.
DH went to Omaha to visit a friend that was in a bad motorcycle accident this last Monday. He is very lucky to be a live and has had 3 surgeries this week to fix his leg and arm. A pickup pulled out in front of him. Just reminds me how things can change in a blink of a moment.

Heather, it looks wonderful, old world fun... Edie doesn't look too sure about the lady in green behind Santa, though... Glad she liked her First Aid kit!
I've been thinking about "respect" a lot as my word for 2019. My word for 2018 was "balance," and I think I came a lot closer by end of year than I was at the beginning! "Respect" has so many applications, but the first and foremost is respecting my body, not running it down, or letting my health suffer. Learning to respect its needs, helping myself understand that a healthy body is a healthy life, and that means that "needs" and "wants" are two very different things. Respect for others, too, and learning not to participate in the down-talking that happens with every group of people.
It's the one at top of mind, for now. Still thinking about that.
Laundry to do!
Love y'all,
Welcome to those who are new, we're a chatty bunch, but welcome everyone who chooses to stay.
Lisa in Arkansas
Oh, and on that note, here's an interesting post on self-care:
1 -
Lisa, thank you for the article on self care. It definitely resonated with me.
MrsCot, welcome! I might have to tell that doctor what I thought. “Doc, I know my weight is not ideal, but I would appreciate you focusing on the reason I am here today. Let’s get my UTI under control and then I might be in a better frame of mind to discuss my weight.” I’ve been practicing speaking my mind to doctors this week, and I feel much better because of it.
Jenni, welcome. I like your word discipline. I feel so much better when I apply discipline to all areas of my life. I find that letting one slide just opens the door for others. Right now my house, sleep, and adherence to food boundaries all need work.
I’m giving myself some grace since my mother has been sick, it’s Christmas, and the new year always brings new hope, I’m still leaning toward focus for my word.

Heather, how very wonderful your pictures are. These memories will be precious to you for the rest of your lifetime and to the grands for long after you are gone. I think when we do these things with our grands, and they have such a wonderful time, it encourages them to make memories with their own families in the future.
The cake is amazing. I'm always trying to imagine what that beautiful cake tastes like Thank you so very much for sharing your beautiful family with us
