Getting things ready for our trip up to Son’s house for Christmas. Today is an easy day so we may go to a movie.
Happy Birthday Karen. Hope you have a great day
Margaret- I find that I am not doing as much in the cooking area. Will make peanut brittle today because my son loves it. Gave you ever had jalapeño peanut brittle? It is really good.
Be back later.

My Dad worked for a man that hosted a huge Christmas party for all of his staff every year, dinner, dance and open bar. He also bought turkeys and gave out Christmas bonuses. One year after the party the boss overheard one man complain that a 200 bonus was not enough. The bids quit doing at all after that. It was sad that the one ruined it for all.

I am going to let off some steam ...My dad is going to be 90 on January 1st. He and my mom live about 4 hours away from me and require that I drive along the Great Lakes. Generally, we do not travel to visit them at this time of the year because of my older son in the wheelchair. Getting off the road with a motorized chair and a fragile disabled person is a risk we no longer will take having driven on some of the worst road conditions imaginable in the past. Anyways, my brother lives about 8 hours from my mom and dad, but heads in from a different direction. He rarely has "lake effect" snow worries and he's rather arrogant about driving through anything. He and I are both adopted and, while we had a normal relationship growing up, I'd say we've drifted apart. With my dad turning 90, my husband and I had been discussing whether we should try to travel since this is a pretty remarkable milestone. My brother just texted to let me know that he's made reservations for my parents and his family to celebrate my dad's birthday on January 1st.. "Was I planning to visit on his birthday or after?" For some reason this just sent me fuming. It's not the first time my brother makes plans without regard for what others might want to do. He's very wealthy and really doesn't consider what I can or can't afford and my husband will not accept his charity. My family, for example, will need to stay at a hotel since he and his family always stays with my parents (there's not room for all of us). I guess I would have preferred that he text ... or how about call?... and ask if I wanted to join him and his family to celebrate OUR dad's birthday on this momentous occasion. I have to confess it took me a few minutes to politely respond that we would like to celebrate dad's birthday ... was there room for my family at his planned restaurant? He, of course, said the more the merrier ( I am sure oblivious to how his text was received) and then suggested a gift that I know I absolutely cannot afford to contribute too. So I just ranted to all of you because I do not want to have lingering grumpy feeling at this time of the year. Thanks for listening.10

Oh Beth, I feel with you.
Family have gone home. Max said he "had the best day ever in his whole life". I love how Bea has a wonderful sense of entitlement. Nothing fazes her. Edie is her usual mischievous, sensitive soul.
I made the falafels out of the mush. They are heavenly. I cooked the sausages and poached the chicken. Then I added all the extra chicken bits to the stock and blasted it. It is totally amazing.
Tomorrow we are going on the bus to my son's house and we will ALL go in their car to see Father Christmas at Preston Manor. Then we are coming back here for a feast and to open their presents as we won't see them for Christmas. I have fruit to dip in melted chocolate and sprinkles for dessert..
Feeling grateful in Hove, Heather UK xxxxxxx7 -
Sounds like everyone is busy getting ready for Christmas. Time is just flying by. I work everyday until Dec 28th. Part of working in a hospital. Christmas eve we plan to go to ODS and spend the evening with them. Then Christmas day when I get off we will go over to YDS and celebrate with them. Since the kids are older we can not get them to get along and we don't try. I have a couple gifts left to pickup and will do that when I get off this afternoon.
Weather here is in the high 40 maybe 51 today and tomorrow. But sounds like we could get some rain and snow Christmas eve.
Blessings, Vicki GI NE3 -
Bright Yule to you all!
"Yule is observed on the day of the Winter Solstice. Also known as Jul, Yule predates the Christmas holiday by thousands of years. There is some debate as to the origin of the word Yule. Some linguists suggest the word is derived from “Iul”, the Anglo-Saxon word for wheel. This makes a connection to a Celtic calendar, the Wheel of the Year."
-Yvonne in TX
This makes me think of my dad. He had a Christmas sweatshirt he wore every year that was a picture of Snoopy with the words "Have a Cool Yule."
So, please everyone, have a cool yule!!

I am going away for a week on the 27th to my favourite little fishing village on the South West tip of Cornwall. My friend is coming too, we have booked a little apartment overlooking the sea!

Jealous! I am a big fan of Poldark, and one reason is for Cornwall. I hope to visit one day. I love the coast line.
Enjoy!

Hello all. I'm still a little grumpy. Hubby called me out on it last night, and I kind of let him have it. He was pouty. Nothing will change, but I oddly feel better.
I have bought nothing for him for Christmas yet. And I am really stressing over it. He doesn't need anything -- he buys anything he fancies -- so whatever I get him will be something he doesn't want because if he had wanted it, he would have already bought it. Sigh. And he doesn't get it at all. "I don't understand why people think I'm so difficult to buy for." We have all given up. But I do need to find something.
Everyone else is purchased for.
Is Christmas over yet?
Felicia, maybe more than a little grumpy still

Happy birthday, Karen UK. :drinker:
My son's family is house swapping with a house in Cornwall from Boxing Day onwards. It is really near the beach. I adore Cornwall and we have friends there we house swap with. St Agnes. Also stay in a friend's chapel near Bodmin. It's even better out of season.

Beth ~ I think you should let your brother know that it is too dangerous a time of year to be driving to your Dad's with your disabled son and that the gift HE has chosen is just to expensive. Let your Dad know that you will visit when the weather is better and that y'all will celebrate his birthday again at that time. JMHO!

Been in cleaning, decluttering mode... we bought some custom-made barstools, as we wanted oak, and we wanted them to have arms. So we got them in yesterday... and when we put them in the dining area, I realized there were just too many pieces of furniture in that room. And... I needed a table to paint on... but my office needed to be rearranged in order to put it in there. So, with my son's help, everything is now rearranged, and exactly like I want it.
For now.
And, in the process, I ended up cleaning both rooms. And, laundry's in the dryer, and dinner's in the slow cooker... and it's been a lovely, domestic day.
I know I'd be crazy inside of a few months, but oh, it's lovely just to have TIME.
Oh, and when I talked to Corey at lunch, they're giving him a raise starting January 1. Well-deserved, I might add, and proud of him and proud of them that they're doing it. This is his third raise since he started the job!
Love y'all,

Home , and sitting and relaxing.. will go see the movie tonight, and maybe enjoy a small cocktail... I can't really relax until after work tomorrow then 3 days off0

lisa your smile in those pics say it all. Enjoy your time off, have fun moving things around in your new place.
Beth. Visiting when it’s safe to travel is more important than celebrating on a specific date. Seems like your brother isn’t thinking about others IMO ((<3 ))
Phew I am officially done teaching jingle bells for another year, aaahhhh joy.

Beth, Carol said exactly what I was thinking. Additionally, I don't think your family would enjoy the event with your brother and his family present but will have a great time when you go with your own family when the time is right for you.

((((Beth)))). No advice. My dad will be 90 on Feb 1. There will probably be family drama as well. I feel for you.
I have everything bought except a toy for one of my great nieces. I have an outfit for her. I wanted a toy. I’ve shopped and shopped and nothing has struck my fancy. The things I like and pick up to buy all say age 3+. She is 2. Sigh! The outfit is really enough. I’m not sure why I’m stressing over it.
As for the husband who is so hard to buy for....what about consumables? Even if he just bought some, he will use them up and need more. Wine, chocolate, really luxurious nuts, a sack full of his favorite toiletries, etc. I read somewhere that men really like getting stuff like that. I know my daddy loves getting a sack full of his favorite snacks, and my DH smiles as wide as Texas at a case of his favorite beer.1 -
My husband and I have never really exchanged gifts at Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, or anything.
Instead ... we both love travelling, so a trip somewhere is usually our gift to each other. And in 2012, when we spent 8 months travelling, that was Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, and all for 2 or 3 years! Then if we spot something on our travels that we like ... we'll get it. A little souvenir or something.
Sometimes on birthdays we'll go to a restaurant that is a little above our usual price range ... somewhere we wouldn't normally go.
Or we'll do stuff like for a few years now on my birthday, we have done a long bicycle ride and then we've gone to the Speedway ... and if there's a play on at the theatre, we'll go to that too. I celebrate my birthdays over 2 days because of the timezone difference between here and Canada.
This year, my husband and I went for a walk the other day, looking in shops, and I spotted a bicycle helmet I liked. It fit nicely and turns out it was on sale for quite a discount! So he got it for me. Then I got him a two-pack DVD set of a movie and sequel he likes. They're both sitting next to the tree right now, with a red bow on them.
My parents each find something they'd like for Christmas, and then the other buys it for them and wraps it up ... and then they act all surprised when they open it. It's cute!!

Today was the holiday party at my line dance class. Many people wore festive clothing and many brought treats---sweet and savory. I planned 12 familiar dances to holiday music. Everyone seemed to be having fun and many thanked me for the dances. I brought home some treats for Jake but didn't eat them myself. Jake fixed lunch for me today for the first time since he started his cancer treatment. He said he finally had enough energy to be useful. After lunch we all took a nap---me for 90 minutes, him for three hours.

Karen UK – very happy early birthday. Stop in more often. I’m sorry about your mom. Have fun on your trip!
It rained quite heavily yesterday. I thought it might be raining this morning but it isn’t. The weather says it’s supposed to stop at about 6, but, as usual, they can’t predict until it’s on the ground. Sometimes it’d be good for them to look out the window. Anyway, if it’s not raining, I’ll go to this grocery store that sells dry ice. I never knew they sold it! Evidently there isn’t a minimum you must buy but there is a minimum of 10lbs you have to get at this one place here in Hickory.
Lisa – what lovely pictures, and you have such an infectious smile. Love it! Congrats to Cory!
Welcome Cat!
Exercised, then went to this supermarket to get some dry ice. Went to WalMart to get some things to make lasagna with (boy, they are getting crowded), then took the package to send to one of Jess’ friends who sends us barbecue every year. I should have made some brownies or something to send to them also. I tried very hard to cut back on the amount of baking I did this year, I think I was pretty successful. We’re supposed to go to an open house at the end of next week, I should probably make something to take with us. We have an extra bottle of wine from Christmas Eve so I think I’ll take that.
Felicia – can your husband buy something for himself and give it to you to give him? At least then he’d know he liked it.
A friend of ours from ceramics and her husband came over. Had some snacks, cheese, some crackers, nuts and cookies. Now the end of the holiday stuff. OH, we have one open house to go to. I was going to make something to take with me, but we have some cookies in the freezer so instead of making something, I’ll just take those along with a bottle of wine that we had left over from Christmas. That’s enough.

Hi all,
Busy day today and I won't have time for my morning exercises, but that is fine. It is only about once every few weeks that I don't do them. My weight is a few pounds down anyway, so I won't fret. Compared to this time last year I'm about 7 lbs less.
We are catching the bus to near my son's, walking up to his and then we are all 7 of us going to see Father Christmas at Preston Manor. Then coming back here for lavish lunch and chaotic chocolate fruit dip with sprinkles. Wish me luck.
Feeling blessed.
Lisa - Those photos are precious. You both look really well and the weight seems to be keeping off.
Lots of love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx

I’ve had a good time crochetting hats for my son, daughter in law, grandson & DH. it started with a hat for dh & went on from there. I’ll be mailing hats to DDIL & Grandson. Son & DH already have theirs. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough of the great stuff I used for the guys. I found matching colors but not as thick as the yarn for the guys. I hope they are enjoyed even if they aren’t quite as cozy.4

Beth I agree with the others. It sounds as if your brother, whether deliberately or not, has created an unhealthy family dynamic around your father's birthday and gift. Add to that the stress of driving in January with your disabled son...no fun for you and your family. I would bow out, but go ahead & make plans with your dad for later in the spring. That way you aren't just left out, but have made your own plans with your dad. I know you didn't ask for my advice, but what you have described made ME feel stressed, and I'm not involved!

Saturday
On the first day of my holiday, I slept for 10.5 hours!! And then I went for a run, a cool-down walk, lifted weights, did a series of stretches, and went for a bicycle ride with my husband.
Run -- a bit slow, but that's OK. There was some climbing involved and it's been a little while since I've run more than 5 km.
Distance: 7.61 km
Elevation: 126 m
Moving Time: 1:01:28
Elapsed Time: 1:02:07
Pace: 8:04/km
Ride -- a nice ride around a little local town with my husband.
Distance: 16.45 km
Elevation: 139 m
Moving Time: 1:08:00
Elapsed Time: 1:10:36
Speed: Avg: 14.5 km/h | Max: 31.7 km/h
After our grocery delivery arrives, I'll probably tidy up the house a bit.
