Karen UK, that is beautiful!
I’m going to a Christmas program that includes a meal tonight. Dave is not going so he asked me to pick him up a couple of burgers. I was sitting in the drive thru and pulled up my budget app on the phone. I clicked on add transaction and it already had Hardee’s and eating out entered into the Payee and budget category fields. Big Brother never ceases to amaze me.
Off to my program. I have 900 calories saved. I hope it is enough.4 -

Been a couple of whirlwind days I went to bed at 8 p.m. and slept til 8 a.m., which was amazing. Also got in my exercise this morning before a few errands. Went shoe shopping with DD and had a lovely little lunch, soup and salad at Panera Bread, cannot believe how sweet tasting their autumn squash soup is! I could have had that for desert!
Nice to hear and see how everyone is handling/enjoying the holidays. I am a bit nervous about visiting my sisters for Christmas (she is a loose cannon and is under a great deal of stress these days) I will put on my big girl pants and look for ways to enjoy and share.
For my word of the year, I'm torn between GRATITUDE or ALACRITY (Barbie taught me that one ) I am recognizing the power of gratitude as an attitude or Kelly might say "flipping" the script and looking for the positive. It is a very very productive, healthy attitude in my life so will make up my mind soon.

Pip - Hope everything proves to be ok.
Thank you all for your sweet comments on my family. I must say I miss them already! They will be away until after New Year. Edie is the one who is so sensitive to others. Very mischievous, but a real empathiser. She notices everything.
Tomorrow DH's daughter is coming down from London for lunch. DH is picking her up from the train station. The main course is fillet steak. Her favourite.
She is super busy and working right up until Christmas Day. So she can only spare us a few hours. I want to have the house spruced up. I hope we'll have time for a walk, but it'll be a short one.
It will, be strange when we get back to having the house to ourselves. A very quiet Christmas. I hope to do some writing and running.
Tomorrow my ex and his family are coming down to visit my son. They wanted to fly to Gatwick, but it was closed by a drone attack. They came by train to London. They moved this year to Glasgow for his wife's job. Feels strange to know he will be over there. So near. I would like to say hello, but it's not up to me.
Lisa - Good article.

Janet: I love the photo of you and your granddaughter.
Heather: Congratulations on a great day! I envy your proximity to grandchildren. It is clear why you wanted to move closer to them. I hope you are able to say hello to your ex. If not this time, maybe a time will come in the future.
jennifurballs: Welcome to a great group!
Lisa: I like your comments about respect.
KarenUK56: I love your jug. What a beautiful gift from your daughter.
Pip: Sending prayers Kirby’s way, and love to you both.
I went out and bought a new coffee pot today. Yay! We used our old one hard and well. This is the same brand. We haven’t used it yet. I’m calling it our Christmas present.

Here is a reminder for holiday stress management that gives you strategies to take care of yourself. It can help in many situations, from too much celebration to too many worries.
Halt Stress Ask yourself these four questions. They can help you find ways to ease your stress a little bit.
1. Am I hungry?
2. Am I angry?
3. Am I lonely?
4: Am I tired?
(As for me, I'm a little bit lonely because my kids are so far away and it is almost Christmas. Visiting this group online helps quite a lot.)

I woke up this morning with a cold---the kind with lots of nose blowing and coughing. I am grateful that I have no place to go and nothing to do until next Thursday. That should give me plenty of time to recover.
Pip, hugs to Kirby and you3 -
Heather - What a lovely time with your family. So happy for you that you were able to move and have this.
I have never had a word of the year, but really like the concept. I have given this a lot of thought and realized that 2018 has been about Positivity and Gratitude for me. I had been on/off anti depressants since 2012 and decided this year that I would get myself off of them and start trying to heal myself through being positive and grateful. Every night from about the end of January I started posting a Grateful or Positive meme to my facebook every night before bed and I followed a lady on Pinterest that posts a prayer that I read. I think for 2019, I would like to continue with what I have been doing since January. I think my word will be Blessed. It will remind me to focus on the positive and to be Grateful, it will also serve as a reminder to think just how blessed I am over the shaky territory coming up since I am now unemployed.

Pip - sending prayers your way! Hopefully it's nothing serious and Kirby is feeling better.
Lisa – Lovely photos of you and Corey. And how thrilling that he landed a job so quickly with such a great company. Did I mention he’s a hunk to boot? LOL! Have fun with your company over the holidays. A year ago, did you imagine the life you are living now?
Kelly - glad to hear from you! No snow for Christmas? Maybe January/February will make up for it. I remember when we got married in February, 1977, there were tremendous drifts and the road was closed. My Dad had to blaze a trail with his huge tractor so the minister could get to Grandma's house to perform the ceremony. Northern Indiana winters.... don't miss them.
Allie – thinking about your electric fireplace, is it for the ambiance or a heat source or both? I thought we kept our house cold but you have us beat. We have a couple little oil-filled heaters – they look like old fashioned radiators so nothing fancy, there’s an element in them that heats oil – maybe mineral oil? and slowly warms a room and keeps it warm. DH has one in his shop to help keep our outdoor kitty who sleeps in there comfy, and we turn one on in the living room at night on low to give a little heat for our old dog as the house does get down into the low 60’s sometimes. Their electric usage is a few dollars a month. We got ours at Home Depot and I’ve seen them at Walmart.
Barbara AHMOD – I too miss the gals you listed! Hope they check in by the end of the year!! Our new Speed Queen washer (which will be delivered Monday morning = Merry Christmas to us!) has the knobs. I really wanted something without electronics but as of 2018 they had to start, per some government rule, to put some in. Sigh. I paid a little more to get the mid-level which has a 5 year warranty, price ended up being about the same as if I’d bought something at Home Depot and purchased an additional warranty. Plus the repairman lives a few miles from us and if need be he could swing in to fix something on his way home from work. Our old Kenmore is limping along, the salesgal at Home Depot suggested unplugging the washer for an hour or two which sometimes resets its computer. I unplugged it overnight, and that seems to have worked but who knows for how long. Want to squeeze another load out of it tomorrow.
Katla - I’ve been where you are with crocheting hats per request. Not quite the same as doing it for your own joy and not for someone else’s wishes. Like Barbie – too much pressure takes the fun out of it.
Beth – driving out for your dad’s birthday when convenient for YOU and nix on the gift sounds like a good idea.
RE DNA testing, I’m still on the fence. I read the reviews on Amazon.com, which I should have read before buying, and several adopted folks reported finding their long-lost relatives using the AncestryDNA.com which I guess matches DNA to others who post theirs. Downside, they warn, is that you might not like what you find out. Like your bio dad is really the milkman, lol. That sometimes the information provided is pretty general “native North American” when a person was hoping the actual tribe would be identified. And that DNA info sticks around in their database and is sometimes shared with health care and other organizations – though at our age, it doesn’t seem important. Beth, please let us know if your son is happy with the results of the kit he uses.
Not sure if I already mentioned, I watched a really cute Christmas movie on Netflix “The Christmas Chronicles” – Kurt Russell gives a new take on Santa and it has lots of neat special effects.
Heather – fabulous photos of the grands, so glad you are closer to them! That First Aid Kit will be treasured, for sure. Potential doctor there?
Here’s a grandparent story. Yesterday I saw something very special. It was dusk, I was on the back deck watching one of the dogs when my neighbor’s son drove into their driveway. The car was barely stopped when the passenger door opened and the neighbor’s 6 year old granddaughter leaped out and went running full tilt to the front door. What absolute joy that child was feeling and those grandparents love that kid so much. Sure brought back memories of my childhood Christmases at Grandma’s house.
Better close. Hugs to those missing their kids and relatives during the Holidays, and wishing strength to those of you making cookies! Glad I’m not in a cookie loop for many reasons, lol.

Karen UK - I forgot to mention - Happy Birthday and that jug is a keeper!!! Did she hand-paint that scene on there? I love unique pottery like that. It's very special
Barbie - take care of yourself! Did Jake catch it yet? We are sneezing at our house but no sore throat or other symptoms, must be dust/mold from the firewood. Crossing fingers.

Karen UK: Belated best wishes for your birthday. What a lovely gift your daughter made!
Heather: Every photo of your grands makes me warms my heart. That Edie... possible future Girl Guide?
Pip: Hoping Kirby gets excellent care. Sending healing thoughts and a big hug your way.
Katla: ((hugs)) to you and DH. Maybe the first pot of coffee can be laced with something a bit 'festive'.
Got my creative fix by finishing our annual photo calendar using the Walgreen's photo tool. I think it's one of our best. These are kept year after year in lieu of doing a photo album. Also did a photo card for my cat Mars. Yes, this little boy is far more social than his 'pawrents' and he and I will deliver cards to the special friends on his list over the weekend.
Stay well friends. Please take care of yourselves.

Pip, wishing Kirby well.
Janet, great picture of you and your granddaughter. Tree is beautiful.
House is about ready except for my hobby room which is a mess. My 68th birthday is tomorrow. Granddaughter and husband arriving Christmas Eve. Youngest son and wife with five kids will fly in Christmas afternoon. Beds are made and floor pallets ready for overflow. I haven’t shopped for presents but have stockings filled, groceries stocked and baking done..
I’m excited. Merry Christmas everyone.

MrsCot .. welcome! So very sorry your physician was insensitive to your needs. Reminds me of the time a male, skinny nutritionist told me he "couldn't understand the whole chocolate thing with women." In turn, I told him I hoped he would understand then why I would not be returning!
Heather ... making memories with the grands ... priceless
Hello Kelly!
I am, as Heather says, knackered! At my third and last store today I texted my husband "last call for any item." If it's not in our house, it's not being given or eaten! All my Christmas preparations are done! Gifts wrapped. House cleaned (ok, sort of, but it's just us). Ready to sit back and enjoy the next few days. I do have to work Monday for a couple of hours at the church (I'm the housekeeper) to get ready for Christmas Eve services ... but no big deal. My oldest son will come home tomorrow and stay with us until Wednesday. As his younger brother is home from school, I'll have some help with his care.
As for the January 1st drama ... thank you all for validating my feelings about the situation. My brother is clueless and All of your advice is spot on. We decided (Kelly suggested this as well to have my brother change the reservation to include us with the caveat "weather permitting." If the forecast is clear for the 1st and the 2nd, then we'll give it a go. If not, we'll stay home and my Dad will know that we had wanted to be with him but will have to wait until another time. As for the expensive gift, we've decided not to contribute and provide something we're more comfortable with (and, frankly, he's more likely to enjoy).

We attended a Christmas service this morning ... with the first nativity play I've seen in a long time!
And now ... the dying process has begun. Going from brownish grey to ... well, we'll see.
My hair has been going grey since I was in my early 30s, but for some reason this year, it took a decided and quite noticeable step in that direction.

Did Mel B Workout DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Warrior Workout (yoga)
The friend’s husband who came over last night is a black belt. He’s recently gotten into tai chi. With my extremely tight hamstrings, maybe I should give it a try. I don’t know.
Barbara – regarding my “accidentally dropped” insurance. They did say that should something have happened and I needed to go to the hospital, they would have made it retroactive. But I’m just glad that nothing did happen. At least it’s all straightened out. I called the doctor’s office and told them that they can again submit the order for my Prolia and it won’t get rejected. I’m ever so grateful the lady called me to tell me that the first time it was denied. What would have happened should I have needed to go to the hospital and they told me that I wasn’t covered? But, fortunately, that didn’t happen
Have a Medicare question. I’ll be going on it in 2 years. When you use the Silver Sneakers, is it good for any gym class (assuming the gym partakes with Silver Sneakers) or only the Silver Sneakers classes?
Shadow and Bonnie are still vying for the title of Alpha Cat. It’s interesting, I’m the person who is saying “leave them alone unless there is direct confrontation”. They will need to work this out. Vince is the person who whenever there is a bit of growling, he steps in to make sure they don’t have any eye contact. Last night Shadow came out of the room, hissed a bit, but then walked by one of our cats. As if she was saying “I’m walking by you, but don’t you try to be friends” Not sure which cat it was.
Lisa – glad to hear that Egg is spayed. All of our cats are spayed. We didn’t know that this was possible. But the Humane Society spays cats before you get them. Well, after we had Bonnie for a few months, she started making this howling sound, a sound she never made before. One time we saw Clyde humping Bonnie. We’re thinking “that can’t be, she’s spayed”. Well, it turns out that when they spayed her a tiny bit of the tissue was left, so she had to be re-spayed. Boy, were we shocked to find this out! There wasn’t enough tissue to get her pg, but there was just enough for her to act like she was in heat.
Mrs. Cott – butt in all you like, we’re glad to have you with us
Cari – and if you put cookies on top of the refrigerator, the calories will jump out
Jennifer – congrats on the win/loss. Good luck on your next challenge. I know you can do it
Katie – good advice to Mrs. Cott…great words
Pip – prayers for Kirby
Barbie – get well soon
Betsy – happy early birthday

Good evening. Praying for Kirby. That is pretty scary.
We are at my mom's for the next few days. It is good to see her.
Thanks for the gift advice for my hubby. I ended up getting him a NW forest pass from REI which will get us in to national forest recreation areas in Oregon and Washington for a year, and a large world map art piece to hang above our bed. I also got him a travel national park trivia game. He is not a gamer, but I thought we could keep it in the RV and play trivia while we are driving. I do usually also get him nuts, but I didn't this year. My mom has a lot of nuts already.
My mom made fudge that is amazing, and I am going to splurge on some other things over the next couple days, but I am going to try to walk and hope to minimize the damage.
Sorry for those of you who will have quiet, low key Christmases. I have been there before and know it can be hard to get very excited about it. My two boys don't come to my mom's until tomorrow night and have to go back home for work Christmas after dinner, but I am trying not to let that get to me. It just seems funny to be here without them.
Much love to all and warm welcome to the new folks.

Michele, the Silver Sneakers class thing may be gym specific. At my gym it’s good for any class that comes with the regular gym membership, but if there’s a yoga class or something that requires a fee on top of the regular membership fee, then you would have to pay that fee.
Prayers for Pip and Kirby.
I attended a very interesting Christmas program and dinner tonight at a Hispanic church that my church partners with in a food bank ministry. The pastor is bilingual, but the guest pastor spoke only in Spanish. I sat through an entire sermon and understood only a word every now and then. The songs were all in Spanish but were traditional Christmas hymns so I recognized them by the tunes. My pastor was not there, so I was asked to say a few words of greetings from our church at the beginning and was also asked to pronounce the benediction and say grace for the evening meal. I did not know ahead of time that I was going to have to do all that speaking, but it was ok, it is amazing how you can feel the welcome and love even when you can’t understand the language. But just so you know, pa rum pum pum pum is the same in English and Spanish. I’m also pretty sure I went over my 900 calories, but maybe not by much. And I won a door prize! It was a nice evening.8 -
Kirby Schlotterback is home. Taking Gatorade for electrolytes. As long as he can keep it down and not throw up, that's good otherwise he has to go back. Another great reason to stay healthy, otherwise it probably would have been worse. He has a bowel obstruction. We r doing everything possible to avoid surgery. Keep your fingers crossed. Talking about flashbacks to a previous Christmas....
The Doc has never seen anything like him. Great healthy body was definitely helping him again. They thought for sure a 1-2 night stay. Now he's home9 -
OregonMother wrote: »Sorry for those of you who will have quiet, low key Christmases.
Don't be sorry. I'm thrilled to have a quiet, low key Christmas. I put a little bit of effort into accomplishing this. I could have done a number of different things, but asked myself what I wanted for Christmas and the resounding reply to my question was "peace and quiet". :) And hopefully some running and/or cycling.
It's just my husband and me over Christmas and after Christmas I have found what will hopefully be a remote quiet spot to go for a few days. I'm thinking books, camera, and bicycles.
Right now, when the most "urgent" thing on my list is doing my hair and nails ... that's a wonderful day.

My daughter-in-law's father passed away yesterday at 78. Congestive heart failure.
Just a couple of weeks ago, he & his wife decided to involve hospice, and a DNR order was written. We are so grateful for this, as he was able to have a peaceful end. He and his wife were taking a nap together, and when she awakened, she realized he wasn't breathing any more.
We had been to see them the day before. He was not coherent, except for one sweet glimmer of lucidity. He flapped his hand towards his wife & with a hint of a smile said, "I think she likes me." So adorable.
He was one terrific man, kind & funny & smart. Beloved by many. A life well lived.
