January 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

I am new to this challenge. I was doing pretty good with running until I developed plantar fasciitis in one foot in November. After babying it and cutting way back on my miles, I am easing back into it. I have a half marathon to run in February, so I hope the injury didn't set me back too bad.
My goal for January is 40 miles.12 -

Welcome!!!0 -
So for 2019, I am targeting the 50k in May as my "big" race. I hope to knock an HOUR off my time on it. I know I could have run it faster last year. I had some technical difficulties and made a few bad calls during it last year. So I really feel that knocking an hour off is doable. Of course, weather and trail conditions are major factors and they might sink my dreams. Will not know till race morning!
My training plan calls for about 170 miles in Jan. I may have to reduce that pending weather. There are only so many miles I can stand on the dreadmill. Pittsburgh winter weather can be a bit of a gamble!10 -
While scouting around for a 10K to knock out one of my 2019 goals, I found one just 20 minutes from where we keep our boat, and it's only $10! And it includes a shirt! Except for my A races, I normally don't sign up this early, but for that little cost, I can take the risk! It's a small race, only 20 people ran the 10K last year (just 53 ran the 5K), so it's a rare chance to get an top 3 AG finish!14
-
Got my January plan and it looks like my goal is 115 miles. Let's DO THIS *kitten*!13
-
I'm sticking with my 70 goal again. It's doable and still gives me time to cycle and lift weights. Although December was a terrible month for cycling... hardly any miles in. .
We are taking a cruise for a week in January. I'm a teacher, and it's odd to miss a week of school for a vacation, but I worked all summer for the school putting in a new database and had not a single day off. I told the principal I need a week off in the 3rd quarter, if I'm to make it through the year! I will probably only run on the treadmill that week - unless I discover that the places we stop have good running options. It's a Windstar cruise and starts in St. Maarten.
It's going to be here so fast, yikes!11 -
This looks like just the motivation I need!
I've run on and off the last few years, but I want to get more consistent and improve on both my 5k and 10k times. I would also like to try running more than 10k. I enjoy running but sometimes have trouble kicking myself out of the house to do it (and I can't run outside in the dark where I live which means winter is a bit of an issue as I can only run at the gym).
So I'll join this with an aim of 20 miles, which seems achievable and a good starting point for me.11 -
Don’t forget teams are still forming, if you are interested in joining a team to run/walk/crawl a cumulative 2019 miles in 2019.
It is through an organization outside of mfp and does require a minimum registration fee of 25$. More if you want swag.
The thread is here:

We need a few more to have 5 teams!4 -
Hundred Mile Club is still a reach for me so starting 2019 there!

Hello!
January will be my first month tracking/participating in a MFP challenge. I am just getting back into running after spending most of 2018 injured. :-(
January 2019 goals:
1. Walk my dog every day (minus the week I'll be in Vegas on vacation)
2. Run 3x a week (again, minus the week I'll be in Vegas on vacation)
3. Total of 60 miles running, walking, & hiking for the month13 -
Welcome @hoshaugh73 and @Squish815 . I’m sure there are others mention by name, you have to forgive me. It’s early and I’m am still cross eyed. Know you are welcome here.
We need a monthly question. I wanted to do brain sex but can not find an acceptable quiz to link. I doubt in my morning stupor that I can muster a relevant question, or any question out side “why did DH drink all my almond milk that I so desperately need for my coffee this morning”? I haven’t got the question, who does?

Brain sex? Is that like reading a really good book? Or something different like ASMR?0 -
Oh @PastorVincent , it’s too early for me to look up asmr and even slightly follow the notion. So, with that I’ll clarify brain sex.
It’s a “is your brain male or female” it not a sex really, more how do you think and what are your strengths. Male is good at guy type stuff, female brain are good at female tasks.
I’m sure I’d score right down the middle. I’m neuter. Maybe more male.... but I wanna test. For fun. It’s still to early for me to be thinking out loud.... sorry.1 -
I'd like to join. I'm really more into cycling, which does not work for Wisconsin winters!
I am post surgery, and may able to start the first week of January. I'll shoot for 25 miles and see if I need to adjust!8 -

ASMR is a "hot new trend" of videos that some people claim creates pleasurable feelings in their mind when they watch/listen. Something akin to the "pleasurable chills when someone gently strokes your neck or plays with your hair" or something like that. I think I am too much of a cave man to follow this one

Ugh. No touchy. I'll pass there.1 -
I would like to try this Challenge...a little intimidating to set my measley goal of 25 miles in January when people on here are running over a hundred....but, oh well....gotta start somewhere.
I recently started running again after quite a while of doing absolutely nothing. I am currently doing interval runs to get into better running condition and I am doing much better. I can run longer distances and at a slightly better time. I would like to be able to run a 5k without stopping, but I think I need a little more time. I don’t think that will be a January goal. 😁
Does anyone use the Garmin Connect app?13 -
@tita0427 welcome! There is absolutely no reason to be intimidated by anyone here. Even those who put up big numbers every month started where you are. 25 miles is a great goal! You'll find we're very supportive of runners of all levels here. I've been on these threads for well over three years and have yet to see any mileage shaming.
I'd guess that most folks here who use a Garmin use the Garmin Connect app, but I don't know if anyone "connects" with each other on that app. There is a Strava group for the members of this thread which you're welcome to join.
@tecat73 welcome to you too! We're practically neighbors. I'm in the Twin Cities. I'm also recovering from surgery and can start running again on January 17th, just 20 more days! I've been sidelined since October 20th. I know a lot of folks who bike in the winter, particularly fatbike riders, but we're glad you found us.

@Elise4270
Here is a question?
I see everyone planning their races for 2019, but am I the only one that doesn't get in to the hype of Races??
When I ran before I only did ONE race, and I ran almost every day, 5-12 miles a day, but I was never really into the races. I guess you could say, I am a fair weather runner, and I didn't want to commit to a race when I didn't know what the weather was going to be like. During the nice weather I will run outside if the conditions are right when I decide to do my run, but if not I am on the treadmill.
Also, I guess I am more of a solitary runner and I compete against myself. I joined the local running group before also, and ran with them once a week, but that too wasn't a big motivator for me. I think because it didn't always fit into my schedule and I felt like I was forced to run outside of my normal time just so that I could run with the group.
Do these things make me one of the oddities of runners?4 -

Yeah, as he said, I use the app with my Garmin 935, but it just feeds out to MFP, Strava, Apple Health, and RunKeepr. It is very rare I log on to the connect website. I am probably pretty typical for this thread judging by the activity in the Strava group (Which I am only lightly active in, I try, but really this thread + the FB group is enough to fill my spare time heh)3 -
@msarobix I don't think that's all that unusual. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. I'm mostly a solitary runner, but from time to time I'll join an informal group run. I joined a running group once, but it was kind of awkward for me, and like you, I didn't like to force a run into my schedule.
I enjoy races because it's one of the few times that I'll actually push myself to the limit to see what I can do. Otherwise it's usually a slow, easy pace for me. When I do race, it's always against myself, not against the field. I'll never win a race and I don't care about that, I just try to do the best I can. Having a race on calendar also helps motivate me to be consistent in my training. For trail races, there's the added attraction that around this area, trail runners are a very close, friendly group and it just makes me happy to be around them. This year I'll be volunteering at more trail races than I run in.
As far as the weather, I'd say I'm more of an oddity than you are. I love running in cold, wet, snowy, rainy weather. The worse the weather, the more I want to be out running in it. I've only run on a treadmill twice in my life, other than in a doctor's office or running store. Treadmills scare the crap out of me!4 -
@msarobix I have only done a few races, but I really love them! I am mostly a solitary runner other than the rare occasion I can get my daughter out with me. I don't train with a group or anything like that. But I love the atmosphere of race day! I like to find a fun theme or interesting location. It's a unique experience and as @7lenny7 said, I tend to really see what I can do during races. I am signing up for several this year to keep me on track for my first half marathon later in the year and to help keep me motivated.3
-
I finally replaced my phone and now the app works, I can come back! I miss chatting running with you all. Although it’s been fab to keep seeing everyone do so well via Strava, it’s not quite the same.
So, I’m in for the new month as I tackle training for the Manchester Marathon in April. I’m aiming for sub-3:45 so I can get a place at the London Marathon, which is 8 mins off my current time. I did take 50mins off my marathon time in 2018 though so I reckon I can do it. Back to eating, sleeping and breathing marathon training for a few months it is.
In fact, let’s put it out there - I want 3:42, because that would be an hour from my first marathon and that would make me VERY happy.
Then I want to BQ Who said that?
My training plan for January has me at 137 for the month, so that random number my goal shall be.20 -
I am a completely solitary racer. I have only run with a group for one season, on Saturday mornings. But as @7lenny7 said, racing is about actually pushing myself. Most of my runs are easy runs but sometimes it's nice to see how fast I can go and try to beat my PRs. And having that goal race on my calendar keeps me going.7
-
@msarobix I don't think you're alone at all, I know lots of runners who don't race much if at all. And many who prefer to run on their own.
I personally love my running groups because that's the thing that got me into running. Having a commitment and meeting people were huge for me. I prefer to run at least a few days a week on my own, usually 4 or 5, but meet up for speedwork and long runs. I would not be motivated to do those on my own. It's a schedule hassle sometimes but the pay-off is big for me.
As for races, I have a love-hate relationship with them I would say. I am always anxious about them, often hate the logistics of getting up super early and getting to the start, and kind of hate running super hard (especially a 5k distance when I feel like I really need to push for speed). But I always love when they are done! I like seeing what I can accomplish, and how I've improved. Even the not so great ones, when I didn't do as well as I hoped I usually have enjoyed the atmosphere and just having done it. I am not ever going to win a race so it's not about competing or running with people (I prefer to run races by myself, trying to stay with anyone stresses me out). I do love the camaraderie of people before and after though. And I love the bling and visiting new places with the excuse of doing a race!7 -
Races are the reward I give myself for training. I don't race a lot, but I try to really enjoy the ones I do.6
-
Page five and there's still four more days before people even start logging miles? Sheesh.
I'll put myself in for 250 miles this month...less mileage due to the fact I'll be starting a three-week taper on Jan 19th ready for the Phoenix Marathon.14 -
Not setting myself a goal for this month as I don't know when I'll be allowed to run again or what I'll be able to do when I am, so sitting this one out. However, I wanted to just say hi and welcome to all the new names popping up this month!
Having read one comment in particular, I have to say don't feel shy or beat yourself up over having what you may see as small goals in here. Personally I know that it can be a bit intimidating being new round here and seeing the humungous amounts of miles some people log. They're all human though! Not doctors, and often quick to tell you not to be crazy and do what they do, but definitely human and friendly and encouraging (and enabling!) with it! The awesome thing about this group is everyone cheers everyone else on, whether they're trying to run down the drive and back or half way round the world :-)
