Beth - how scary that must have been! So glad you are safe.
Michele
who can't seem to get cool right now....maybe I'm having a hot flash

Machka - love the cat scale. Hope you feel better soon.
Lisa - you seem to be doing very well post surgery, glad the presentation went well.
Allie - looking forward to seeing the new paint.
Barbara- I grew up with a tin roof, I so miss that sound on a rainy night. There are 100 invitations to do. Kaitlyn and I did some experimenting, we thought the MOH was doing things in a manner that slowed it down considerably. We were right, she was getting her step done at about 3 per hour, and kaitlyn can do 10 per hour. She’ll have them together in no time now.
Michele - hope the sun comes out and stays out for a few days for you.
Rori - happy to hear you are in the mend. I keep the front of my fridge free of many things. Right now I just have 6 magnetic frames on it.
Heather - so sorry about your friend, I think I would feel left out too.
I had the “Toni” home perms when I was younger, but when we moved to Alberta my hair went curly and uncontrollable on its own. This past summer I was Kaitlyn’s perm model with the understanding that it was big rollers with a light solution. It seemed to have tamed my curls and I am going on Thursday to be a perm model for her provincial exam.
Allie - I’m so sorry you have had such a bad day, I hope you get a good rest tonight and hear from your brother soon.
Felicia - I hope you have some happiness in your marriage. It sounds difficult. I agree with you, I believe people can and do change.
Beth - what a shock about the bill, but so fortunate to have found the gas leak.
I did very little today, returned some bottles to the bottle depot, got some groceries and applied for a few more jobs. Still no news on the job I really want, so I guess I should continue looking. Nothing is screaming out as something I really want to do, but they will pay the bills.
Out of over 85 applications through Indeed only 3 have been viewed so far. It’s still a very tough market.

Heather does your friend have a caring bridge site? Here they are very popular when a family is dealing with overwhelming health issues of a loved one. It takes energy that is short supply for a family to explain to others what is going on with their loved one. It keeps those interested informed while saving energy to the overwhelmed families. I wrote this before I saw the post about hearing from other friends.
When I went through DH illness I understood why people have them. It is also why I ask the care givers how they are doing?, and are the getting anytime to take a break for themselves when they are dealing with a loved one who is ill.
If you do not get a chance to see your friend. One thing that might be helpful is when you think of her think of her surround by healing light. When I say healing light I realize she is in the final stages of life. Healing light to means the healing that enables a person to let go with grace and love.
When my mother in law was near the end I did not go to see her because we did not have a close relationship, and I did not want to add tension to an already difficult time. I remember sitting in my car and singing to the universe to send her healing light. It was healing for me too.
I was not with my sister either. We lived 600 miles apart. I did hear her say she loved me over the phone shortly before she past. I had made many trips to St. Louis in the months before she past. Being physically there was not what was important. It was the moral support and love I gave her that was important.

I feel very frustrated, but it's not about me, so I just have to let her do what she needs to do. I would be happy to go up for an art exhibition and just pop in for half an hour, but I'm not the first thing on her mind, I'm sure. She has many close friends and a loving family. I can't help feeling a little shut out though.
I'm currently reading a very good book on my Kindle about the end of life, so I do have some idea about what is going on. Gradually shutting down is part of the process. Hard though, as I am out of the loop re what is happening.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxxcityjaneLondon wrote: »Much to my relief tonight the group of friends of my cancer friend, Ros, have resurrected our original WhatsApp group. Ros discontinued it in 2017 because she felt we were communicating more with each other than with her, but we all feel that we need each other now when she can't deal with us all individually. I was feeling very cut out, but it's reassuring to have communication from those who live close and to be in touch with all her friends.

Sometimes not being there is the best choice.
I know that during my catastrophic event of last year, I didn't want people around for anything more than brief encounters because I felt like I had to entertain them. My sister-in-law, for example, kept wanting to come and stay overnight or for the weekend or for the week or whatever, and the very idea of that was so stressful for me because, in my head, I had to clean the house, buy groceries, cook meals, and generally entertain her if she did come. So I just shut down that idea entirely.
I think it is good that a communication method has been set up ... and in my situation, it was easier to send a quick update message via FB to concerned people. Something I could just copy and paste, and read the responses, and not respond. In fact, my mother took over a lot of the communication. I'd send her an update, and she would post a brief version of it because I just couldn't deal with it.
One of many, many things I learned last year (2018 was my learning year) was that it is very challenging to support someone in a difficult situation ... and it is very challenging to be in the difficult situation dealing with those who want to support you. I'm still not sure what the right response is except to say that I appreciated those who offered meaningful, but very brief support ... a loving comment on FB, a quick cup of coffee, a ride home from the hospital at night. I could deal with those things because they didn't require me to do anything.

NYKaren thanks for the history of David's toe. So glad the plain ol' people on the scene stepped up and prevented worse damage.
Hugs and spicy chicken soup to Machka, Rori, pip, Vickie, Evelyn and all with colds or crud. Pip I'd add a glass of red wine in front of that fireplace, then sleeeeeep.
Heather great attitude about your cancelled dance class. All calories out are victories! So glad your friends friends made the effort to bring you into the loop.
Lisa Brava! now sleep sweet!
Allie (((hugs))) Hoping Alfie can kiss those tears away.
Felicia of course people can change... we're not stones! Your husband sure sounds depressed... (and depressing). Is there a trusted male you could use as a messenger? Would he go to a doctor? When I spend way too much time in bed my body stiffens up and makes activity seem impossible, so then I feel bad in both body and spirit. Good luck to you.
Beth 6 times larger bill and scary gas leak, WOW! Will your monthly payments continue to be so crazy large due to "balancing" even though your hubs stopped the leak? :noway:

Welcome Holly and Vamoose924!
Lots of excitement and distraction here today. Roofer came and we added on all the punch list items we couldn't get fixed before we bought the house. Had to ask him to postpone schedule 'til the loan actually comes through, maybe mid-March? Then the tree guy's crew came and felled the 5 dead tan oaks. They cut the trunks into stove lengths and will return tomorrow to burn the branches. They did all the work but I am exhausted... just having 4 strange guys in and out and around the house for much of the day kinda wore me out.

welcome vamoose check in with us often and let us know what name we should call you.
Beth scary and expensive story. Thank goodness DH caught it before it got even worse!
Heather so glad your friend Ros set up a way for you all to connect as you say goodbye to your lovely friend. Margaret’s comments touched me personally, this is such a painfully sad time.
Allie you are a strong, brave woman, one step at a time, you keep moving forward, caring for others and now finally caring for yourself, keep going.
Rori glad your thumb is on the mend and having met you in person—your hair is exactly as you described—and it is awesome!!
Off to ride the rails to Genoa today, arrivederci Firenze!

wessecg! I'm reminded of that passage from A Visit From St. Nicholas that goes, "The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave a luster of mid-day to objects below."
Machka, you have the cane thing down precisely right. I've been using one for 4-5 years now, but my right shoulder still feels like it's going to give up if I have a lengthy (for me!) walk of 150-200 feet. And the distance grows shorter if I continue after a brief stop. My muscles are all very un-toned. Speaking of "un-toned", I do hope you feel better soon.
Allie, I too hope your DB is well. Domestic troubles can be very worrisome times for those of us on the outskirts. It's so hard to not step up and try to "fix" things.
Beth! the best laid plans of mice and men … often stop with "And then I got on the computer!" 😉
Lisa, you're a real treat! "Surprise, folks! No cane!" I'll bet they were more than surprised. I'm wondering how Penny is also. I saw a mention that one of the Arctic islands is having an invasion of Polar bears because the sea ice is so sparse, so they are seeking other food. Polar bears are wonderful creatures, but they're very powerful and intelligent from what I hear.
Oh Heather! we are each bright young things in our own way. My mother was platinum blonde from the time I was 5 or 6. I can recall her with dark hair. One if the last things her best friend did for her was to bleach and tone her roots. Mom was 43 - barely and glamorous to the last. I had my hair every color natural hair could be, but always wanted grey. In one failed attempt I ended up with vibrant turquoise. That took a shampoo with Tide detergent and a few other marinades before I could get light Ash blonde dye, my natural color then, to take. When I finally let my hair grow long again a few years ago, it was just what I'd wanted since I was a teenager - grey with pale silvery streaks near my face.
About your friend, you might give her a day's notice that you'll be coming up, if that'll be ok. Her strength probably varies a lit, which is why she can't plan too far ahead. There isn't time to plan much, but if she's a beloved friend, make the attempt. You may regret it a lit if you don't.
NYKaren, what an interesting sculpture! I wonder why the female cherub has such a strangely shaped almost incompkete-looking pair of wings. Do you recall who the artist was? The photo of the wine and produce is so evocative I wanted to sniff the air!
What a great idea, KJLamore! I love the thought of my grey and silver hair as a blank canvas. I'm now plotting my first new color adventure!
Very tired. Really worked in physical therapy today.

Carol in GA: We had our air ducts cleaned once several years ago. It was a scam. We paid for the cleaning and they were here for awhile but their “service” didn’t improve air quality, dust levels or anything. Basically, they vacuumed more out of our wallet than anywhere else. I would get several good references before I hired anyone if I was thinking about duct cleaning. :flowerforyou:
Heather: Sending good wishes for your brother and also for you and your group of friends who are supporting your cancer friend and each other.
(((Allie))) What a terrible day. I hope tomorrow is better.
Felicia: I am sorry that your DH’s health is declining. My DH has health issues, too, and they are significant. He has diabetes and MS. I wish he would be more active. He tells me that he is doing the best he can. I can’t change him, so I work on me. I work at staying strong both physically and emotionally, and I do better sometimes than others. I also do things that I enjoy. I hope that you will stay strong. Doing something you enjoy on a regular basis can help you to stay strong and bring you a bit of happiness.
Vamoose924: Welcome to a great group! Stop by regularly to give and get support. There are a few of us here who live in different parts of Oregon. :flowerforyou:
Beth: So glad that your DH found the gas leak and was able to shut it off.
M in OZ: Your goals are impressive. You’ve set yourself a big challenge, and from what I’ve seen here, you are likely to meet that challenge. WTG!
(((Michelle))) Hot flashes aren’t all that fun, but they eventually go away. It can take a while. Be well. :ohwell:
Our current difficulty is a huge water bill. The City changed something in the connection at the street, and now claims that we have used gobs of water. We haven’t. Their work is leaking, but we will have to hire a plumber to see if any of this is our responsibility. :grumble:. I hope the plumber we called will come and prove the problem is the ity’s work and not our water consumption. DH will be in touch with them soon.

I feel just a tad bit better, just have a feeling in the pit of my stomach like waiting for the other shoe to drop.. I have to just pray about it I guess...well off to the showers....2 -
Tracey – honestly, I really don’t care if the sun comes out today or not. See, we’re meeting my cousin in Daytona for lunch. If it was sunny, I’d feel bad that I wasn’t laying out in the sun. But if it’s cloudy….. Still keeping everything crossed for you
Fridges – guess I’m lucky in a sense that I have a stainless steel refrig so I can’t have it covered in magnets. I remember my last fridge wasn’t ss and it was covered in pictures that the kids drew. I guess the good part was that the dirt couldn’t get to the fridge
Katla – some of the things that help me when I have a hot flash (you won’t believe this) is to have some grapes that are frozen or have one of those small containers of applesauce that has been frozen
Michele who is off to exercise

I’ve been mia as our baby granddaughter was born on February 9th. First grandchild! In heaven. Anyhow that’s resulted in a stall of weight loss and two pound gain. So up 5 still. Read some information on mindful eating. I like the concept. Can’t exercise much last couple days as my hip pain is significant. Did just upper weights and will do the same today. Need to see a doctor about it as it’s been an issue for a couple years but recently getting worse. I don’t want to cause more damage by my exercise routine so finding out what’s going on is a good idea. Now to find the time....
Today’s goals are 4 veggie servings, 3 waters, part of normal exercise routine, no sweets.3 -

Hope those suffering from colds feel better soon, and hugs to those in need.

When I got home from my walk yesterday morning and took off my shoes, I realized that one of my Yaktrax had fallen off. I'd been walking for almost two hours and there was no way I could go back and retrace my steps looking for it. I was embarrassed by how sad I felt---too much much sadness for a small material possession. I went back to the store where I bought them but they had none left in my size. I checked Amazon and my size seemed to be sold out by all their vendors. I ended up ordering a pair that won't be sent until March so at least I'll have some for next winter. Fortunately, the temperatures have gone up, it's been raining, and the snow is melting so walking in my boots is just fine. I wouldn't have needed the Yaktrax today even if I hadn't lost one.
Allie, When I wake up in the middle of the night in a panic about something, I turn on the light and read to take my mind off whatever it is. I either fall asleep or have a pleasant time reading. Either is better than worrying.
Hugs to all who are ailing. I had a bad cold, then the flu this winter and I remember how awful it was and how great it was to finally feel better.
Barbie from warmer NW WA3 -
Barbie deep breathing exercises help me when I wake up upset at night. I have some relaxation tapes I listen to. I also sometimes take some over the counter herbal remedies like chamomile.
It is snowmageddon today. We are breaking our February snow fall. 6-9 inches on top of what we have. A friend posted a picture from Hawaii today. I could not look at it. No school and many things will again be shut down. I will miss my Zumba, voice lesson, and choir today.
I saw the statue of David in the late 70's. I remember the being awe struck.

Did 1 hr 20-40-60 workout on the treadmill. The plan for tomorrow is to take the Power Hour class. I’ll probably workout on one of the machines before the class, just haven’t figured out which machine
Before exercise, went to Publix and got a paper and returned some food that I probably won’t have since Vince won’t eat the beef and I need to finish it. I was planning he would eat it and so I’d need something else. Then exercised, needed to take a full shower there since I was so sweaty I actually could smell myself. I know it’s just more humid down here and that’s why I sweat so much more
Grace – congrats on the birth of your first grandchild! Hope you feel better fast. A 2lb gain really isn’t that much, it’ll come off
Viv – feel better. A good reason to get that weight off. Once a few pounds come off and you see how much better you feel, you’ll be so much more motivated to get the rest off
I’m not a wine drinker. I usually only have some at Christmas time.
Pip – this seems to be going on too long and doesn’t seem to be getting any better, as a matter of fact, it seems to be getting worse. Maybe it’s time to see a doc and get an antibiotic?
Michele where it’s sunny today….no fair! It was supposed to be sunny yesterday and cloudy today. Mother nature --- are you listening?????

Allie: I’m happy to hear you’re a tad bit better, and hope that things continue to improve. :flowerforyou:
Michele: Frozen grapes and applesauce make good sense in combatting hot flashes. I’m happy to hear they are helping you.
Viv UK: I also have a knee that hurts when my weight is too high. It is the result of an over use injury. I am currently working my way back down to its happy place. Its happy place is a bit lower than MFP thinks I should go. I want to be active and pain free, so I am working on dropping a few pounds to keep the knee happy.
Margaret: Snowmageddon sounds horrible after all that you’ve already had. Sending warm thoughts your way. :flowerforyou:
(((Pip))) I hope you rest well and feel better soon. Kirby has good ideas for you.
The dog is currently at the groomer and I have an appointment for a haircut later today. I have a city meeting to attend this evening and I hope it is short. Our big worry is the water meter. The city changed it and since then gallon upon gallon has gone somewhere. We have to prove it isn’t being used by us, which means we have to pay for a plumber. :grumble:
Katla in Beautiful NW Oregon
3 -
Thanks, KLanders, for the description of the Cupid and Psyche statue. I hadn’t thought of that pair because the figures looked much younger than one commonly sees them portrayed.
Katla, i hope your plumbing woes don’t end up being too onerous. Here on my mountain our water source is from a deep well higher up the hill. It’s a community water system, and has to be tested monthly. We’ve never had a problem, and the water is always fresh, cold, and delicious. So far the community hasn’t decided to meter and charge individuals, but I run my washer only about once a week (I have a large capacity set) and my dishwasher about once. I use disposable dessert plates for my meals and have plenty of room for any pots, pans, kitty dishes, etc.
Pip, if you have the flu an antibiotic won’t help unless you have a secondary infection. However, I’d follow Kirby’s advice and go in. You sound like you may have complications, and flu can be deadly, even for the very fit. Please take care.
I am regaining my energy from the surgery at last. I hadn’t realized how low it was until I started physical therapy. Somehow more exercise has magically given me more energy. My steps per day have gone from 750 to over 1000 even on non-work days!
I stopped by the store after my PT yesterday and got some more Oikos Triple Zero yogurt. It’s become my favorite go-to food when I need a high protein quick breakfast. Just the perfect size and the flavors are good too. I also got some mini egg muffins in a southwest flavor (meaning chili’s, cheese, bell peppers and tomatoes) my yen for sweets has magically gone with this surgery. I crave fresh tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, and winter squash. My meats have been chicken thighs, turkey or chicken deli slices and tofu. I’m slowly starting to add a bit of ground beef, and my magic little pouch is tolerating it well.
The hardest part is keeping my liquids up. I was used to drinking with meals, but now I’m not supposed to drink for 1/2 hour after and no during. So I have to keep a cold tasty drink at hand at almost all other times. Water is fine at home, but other water has begun to taste bad to me. I’ve found some flavoring drops that are zero sugar. I particularly like strawberry pineapple. Citrus flavors are my favorite, but the orange and lemonade flavors don’t work well for me.

Yes, Barbara, I believe he is depressed, and probably has been for most of his life. Some of it is situational -- he had a really crappy childhood and an awful first marriage -- but some of it is genetic -- his mother and only brother also suffer from various mental disorders. Considering all of that, he is highly functional -- has a great job in which he does well, and completes projects around the house. He is just very negative and lacks energy when he is home -- perhaps because he has to work so hard to be otherwise in his job.
For instance, today is his birthday, so I had our 12 year old give him a quick call on our way to school. I didn't expect my husband to pick up the phone because I knew he was either working or getting ready to present, so I was ready for us to leave a cheery message for him to get later, but he picked up. He said "hello," very dully. My son said, "Happy birthday!" and my husband replied, "I'm setting up," and hung up. I was appalled, and didn't hide that very well with my son. My son, who has figured things out by now, took it in stride. "He's working, mother." Well, yeah. But how hard is it to say, "Thank you. I need to get back to getting ready to work"?
And if you were so damn busy, don't pick up the phone!
Felicia, still feeling a little miffed today, but I will get over it

I just turned 60 in November. I work at a desk all day, but do martial arts 3x a week. I messed up my knee about six months ago so working out and even walking have been difficult. I really, really want to lose 20# to get back to my "wish I weighed that when I thought I was fat" weight. I think I'm going to need some support from other people. I lose 3#, gain 2#, lose 1#, gain 3#. You know how it goes. Any support is appreciated!3

Allie agree with Mary about submitting a claim.
Pip agree with Sharon about going in if possible. When my friend had the flu I made chicken soup with every thing I could think of that would help with flu...pepper, tumeric, onions, no noodles, garlic. Essential oils are great for fighting the flu too. Peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus are all good.
When I had the swine flu I should have gone in but I was sooo sick I could get myself to go. Should have called an ambulance. My temp went to 105. I learned that ibuprofen was the way to take a temp down. Aspirin at that high of a temp can cause Reye syndrome in adults.
It took a half hour to move son's car. It is done!

We went to Petworth House. Beautiful sunny day - snowdrops in swathes across the grass, native daffodils, crocus, purple anemomes.
Unfortunately it was half term. The car park was jammed. I think we found the last space. When we went for lunch we had to queue for ages. Not well organised. The food I ordered was under cooked so we complained and got a substitute.
The Dutch Masterpieces exhibition was interesting, but very small for the money. The best painting was the Rembrant self portrait and a Cuyp picture of some cows. A couple of others were world class.
The stand out attraction of PH are the Turners, painted in situ, and the absolutely amazing wood carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Quite astonishing. I will post one from my phone.
So, it was nice to go out, but not the success it could have been.
