March goals: Run 100+ miles, stay healthy & keep up with marathon training plan
3/4 - dirt track 7k run
3/5 - 14.6 km run
3/6 - 32k long run
Yesterday I was questioning if I even wanted to continue marathon training. I got some encouragement from a friend, and today got up, had some coffee (I'm NOT a coffee drinker) and good breakfast, loaded up my hydration pack with snacks & drink and took off, slowly. One or more of those things worked, as it went fine... overall a steady pace, even though it was slow and included walk breaks if I noticed my HR had crossed into the watch's "red zone". Mostly I was observing to make sure I didn't get out of breath or feel like I was pushing the pace at any time, but rather aimed for a pace I felt I could maintain for hours - and I did. I guess I'll keep going.
But I'm readjusting my plan because I underestimated the route and ended up with 20 miles instead of 19. Next week will be a shorter long run, then I'll give myself leeway to shorten either the 1st or 2nd of the three 20-milers that the plan actually calls for. I don't want to overdo it and am probably very close to that line. And 4 hours is a long time for me for a training run - some would actually advise against going past certain time periods during training as there may be a rule of diminishing returns when you go too long. So I really need to take recovery seriously!
@polskagirl01 Definitely take recovery seriously. I put in too many junk miles training for Miami and it showed. My pace slowed way down toward the end of the training plan. I got super discouraged, was exhausted, kept getting sick, and did not do as well as I would have liked at Miami. I ended up walking the last 4 miles of the marathon because my body just started shutting down. After a few weeks of rest and serious mileage cut-back, my pace is finally improving and I am feeling less exhausted after runs.8 -
3/1 = 10.5 miles
3/2 = 12 miles
3/3 = rest day
3/4 = 4 miles

3/6 = 7.5 miles
3/7 = rest day
Okay, I am officially registered for the Mittens Challenge in May. Flights booked and I am trying to convince myself I am not completely crazy.

She aborted 2 hours in... she did not know I had last set the incline to 5.5% so she ran for 2 hours, up a 5.5% grade...almost 1/2 mile of elevation.
ETA: the docs told her to avoid hills until her orthopedic inserts arrive... ops
your wife is a saint.
cuz i mighta killed you
Well I set it the last time I used it... days ago. I meant to remind her to check it but forgot since I was at work when this went down.
But, yes, yes she is!8 -

Ditto! Sounds like a great day.4 -

No. Vo2 is a measure of how much o2 you use. O2 sat is what percentage of rbc’s is oxygenated. I suppose it would be similar, but I thought it be helpful to have a live reading .

YA’LL. All the well wishes and healing vibes are helping. I made it down the hall and back on crutches, set a hospital PR 😛 might get me for doping though 🥴🤘15 -
For anyone needing new running shoes and/or wanting to stock up on a model they have and love Active GearUp is having a pretty awesome sale. Most are older models but still, you might find those shoes you love but can't find anymore.
@Elise4270 - {{{HUGS}}} ETA - no racing in the hallways!!
I think someone with more medical background will need to explain the difference between O2 Sat and VO2Max. Maybe @workaholic_nurse or @Avidkeo?
@PastorVincent - that cake looks just decadent! and yes, I probably would have killed you too but I bet she is pretty amazed with herself for running at that grade for so long! That is pretty awesome!
Attn All Newbies - I am seeing a lot of you frustrated that you didn't hit your goal. So just wanted to mention that hitting your goal every month is not a requirement to be in the challenge. The point is to have a bit of extra motivation when you are sitting there drinking your 3rd cup of coffee and debating if you really want to go out the door or get on the treadmill. We all have lives, jobs, significant others, etc. that need attention too and get in the way. It happens. Just try to be realistic and as consistent as possible. Maybe right now that is 1 or 2 days a week. That is just fine. Later when you have a routine set you may be able to add in another day and will have your family, SO, friends, etc. used to the fact that yes, you will be gone for an hour or two or more because, well because you have to and ultimately they will be happy because you will be happier.16 -
I'm so excited. it's looking like it will be above freezing for this weekend. and next week.
i'll be getting off the track and hitting some rails to trails. the ice melt is about to begin.
speed demon has been extra needy and whiny during this deep freeze so i'm looking forward to getting her out for a run too. and a new foster dog sunday. (type/age/s unknown till pick up) maybe he/she will join us for some short runs.6 -
So, as I lay here in this hospital bed, listening to my O2 sat beep every time I move around... I wonder why is O2 not a helpful training metric? Any ideas? Seems to me it’d be more useful than HR.
Anyone have a monthly question?
My understanding is that o2 sat doesn't change much unless something is going wrong - ordinarily it's close to 100 and when mine dropped under 90 in the ER when they gave me too much pain medication I had people all over me, giving me oxygen, making sure I was okay.
But you can buy one of those fingerclippies at the drugstore for not much money, could be useful for someone with asthma or heart disease maybe.
I'm glad everything went well! Wishing you good healing!4 -
I have a monthly question if no one minds! For the benefit of the newbies especially. What gear have you bought that you regret spending too much money on, either because you hardly ever use it or because you found you could get something less expensive? And what gear has turned out to be a really great deal, either because it was expensive but worth every penny or because it was super cheap but works great?6

Hello! New here. Excited to see a group of people so supportive of each other! I want to get back into running, not for marthon purposes but for myself and living a healthy lifestyle! I'm looking to start with something I think I can achieve, and that is 25miles. It seems so small, and seeing how most if you are upwards of 100 miles, kudos to you! You are an inspiration!10

i bought a NB shirt that was on clearance and was still 70 dollars-i regret that. i regret more that speed demon found it and ate a hole in the middle of it
i've gotten a lot of use out of my xodus gtx for trails and winter.
my bungee dog leashes are awesome
trailbelts, spibelts, and miracol vest all worth the money
body glide worth the money
i bought oakleys. i hated sunglasses. hated. refused to wear them but when i ran my first half the light was bothering my eyes on the drive to it. so i went to a local store for a cheap pair. four years later, i regret nothing. the frames are made so i can change out lenses. intial investment was 150. then, 2 years later i bought a pair of trail lenses for 60 dollars. worth every penny.7 -

Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Lower 20s F today; snow flurries; and variable wind. A much better run today - perhaps because I listened to music.

6-1 Freedom 5K
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5k9 -
Maybe @ddmom0811 can provide some insight on the cycling article since she is a cyclist as well as a runner. I just know I would be pretty upset, in any competition, to be told I needed to hold back on my race and lose my lead so as not to interfere with the men's race....
Sorry just starting to catch up in here on my lunch break.
I can't imagine why they would not allow her to catch up. In my cycling group every Saturday there are about 100-200 cyclists (depending on weather and what events are being held that day). We have groups by speed. Everyone picks the speed they want to go and the fastest group leaves first. We wait a few minutes, then the next group and so on. In the fastest group -- about 26MPH and faster (no limit), there are usually a couple women (not me!). Why did they have the women start at the same time if it was supposedly 2 different races. Bizarre.
At the conference I was just at one of the speakers said we shouldn't address our class as "ladies and gentlemen" because not everyone identifies as a binary gender these days. One person suggested "Team" and another suggested "Scholars". I tend to just say "Okay guys, here's what we are doing today ...". I guess that's not allowed anymore.
So it makes me wonder where would this race organizer put them. But let's not get started on that discussion.

Can't catch up now. For some crazy reason I agreed to teach two online college classes that just started, so I have to work on those during my lunch and after work. I realized last night that these classes are going to cut into my exercise - it will be hard to lift after work now. And now, lunch is over.
MARCH Goal 70
3/1 - 4 miles + strength training legs
3/2 - rest day/travel day
3/3 - rest day
3/4 - 4.5 miles + transform app - arms
3/5 - 5 miles
3/6 - transform app - legs
3/7 - 5 miles
Tot: 18.5/706 -

Here are a couple...
NOTE: This is all my OPINION. You might disagree, and that is fine, but this is my opinion based on my experiences.
REGRET: Eh, nothing really, but things that I wasted money on:
* Blink Armbands. They died quickly. Saving up for a Nox thingy to replace them
* Jaybird Earbuds - total garbage. Even after several RMAs. None lasted more than a few months despite being very expensive
* JLabs Ear bubs. Same as Jaybird. Garbage.
* Amiphod hydration belt. Falls off and uncomfortable to wear.
* Oakley Polarized Black Iridium Sunglass - WAY pricey WAY PRICEY - work great but easy to scratch - I really really like them, and the look fo them (see my profile picture) but at that price point they should resist scratching WAY better
GOOD FINDS:
* Darn Tough Wool Socks. Best winter socks ever. Full Stop
* Heat Factory gloves on Amazon - only $20!
* Under Armor Polarized Igniter 2 Sunglasses - 1/2 the price of the Oakley's but slightly darker, more resistant to scratches and just as good in all other specs. ANSI safety certified - aka they will stop rocks kicked up by cars, and random tree branches
* Northface Windwall Jacket - Cost 6 arms and 3 legs at a local store, but nothing stops the wind like it does. I have been in 35 mph winds with it now. The wind does not get through.
Also BODY GLIDE. AKA Cream of the gods.
There are tons more I buy and toss or use. But that is just a few. Might do a full gear post again at some point for the newer people.5 -

OH HOW COULD I LEAVE OUT THE WUNJO X5 ULTRA HYDRATION PACK! Best hydration pack I know of and only $60.2 -

I can't think of anything I regret buying. I'm pretty cheap and am always looking for deals (all of my Garmins have been bought off Craigslist for a great price) and I do my research so there haven't been any disappointments. I'll keep this part of the question in mind and see if I come up with anything.
One piece of gear that has really stood out for me is my Under Armor Cold Gear Infrared Balaclava. I think the "infrared" thing is a marketing gimmick but I love wearing this is cold weather. It's very versatile in how it can be warm, breathes well, and can be used in a wide range of temperatures. I think it's normally $30 but I found it on sale a year or two ago for $15.
Another piece of gear has been by Drymax socks. They will take me though anything unscathed. When I was running in -29F real temps, my Drymax cold weather running socks kept my feet perfectly warm. When I run trails I have some mini-crew Drymax socks which keep my feet happy no matter what we're running in or how wet they get. Never a blister. I also use Drymax thin mesh socks for road running and absolutely love those too. My feet never feel sweaty no matter how warm it is. They're not cheap, but they're worth every penny.4 -

Ohhh this is a good question.
Gear I regret: shoes that weren't fitted. So 8 bought them online or just selected them myself. They've always had issues. I've never regretted shoes I got properly fitted.
Gear I love: my hydration pack I got from wish.com. It was recommended by other runners, cost around $20usd and is brilliant for me as a first pack to see what I think. Only used it twice now but has made a massive difference.
My visor. Can't remember who recommended it, I think @elise4270 and I love it so much. It keeps my hair out of my face, and water if it's raining. It wicks sweat and is really comfortable. And I got it on sale. Love it.3 -
Oh and I'm an outlyer, I'm not that but a fan of body glide. I have a stick and have used it along side vaseline and find it meh. But I have a LOT I need to use it for, shoulder straps, under boobs, groin etc. I find vaseline works just as well and is a fraction of the price and frankly easier to apply. Plus I can get it in my local store where as Bodyglide is 1.5hr away. Also they tick me off that they have done the pink tax thing - there is a pink tube marketed as for women, that is smaller, and costs almost as much as the regular size, so therefor costs more for the same amount, yep that grinds my gears. Bodyglide I never felt like I got decent coverage. And yes I have a couple of pairs of underwear that are now vaseline stained but they are my running underwear so I don't care.2

I am running the double weekend with a couple of other ladies in my running group. They are already Marathon Maniac members and I was starting to feel left out. LOL
I am not running for a time and I wont be PRing anything. I am just going to try and survive the weekend.6 -

My favorite higher priced purchase is this North Face windbreaker. It's extremely lightweight so I can layer it with just about anything for just about any temperature where wind might be an issue, and I like having the bright color for visibility. On the discount side, I've been happy with almost all of the gear I've purchased from Decathlon, on the recommendation of folks here.
Dislikes are pretty individual. I haven't really been happy with any pair of shorts or leggings that weren't high-waisted. I also *personally* didn't love the crew Smartwool socks I bought at the beginning of winter - they were too thick, rubbed weird on my legs, and didn't keep my feet warm on their own. I found that either tights or a liner sock under my usual socks works best for keeping the toes warm. But I bought them from REI so I was able to return them even after wearing them on several runs, which has prompted me to make sure to buy stuff from REI whenever possible.4
