I made 48 out of 40 for February, so I was just going to set my goal at 50 for March.... but then I looked more closely at the HM training plan, and it looks more like 60. So 60 miles it is!7

Hello!
New to the challenge and pretty much first time posting in any forum. Just a beginner but your "welcoming posts" are so...welcoming and just what I (and my friends who put up with my updates about the Kms I run) needed that I decided to join.
I "re-started" running in January (15Km) and in February ran 68Km. In March I´ll try to keep the same number.
Thanks for existing!
After years of lurking on the forums, I started participating in this one a few months ago and it is great! Super supportive folks and definitely provides some accountability. Hearing about everyone else's accomplishments and races really motivates me. I hope you find it as helpful as I do. Welcome!7 -
Looks like we're off to a good start for March. Four pages in already!
I was supposed to do a 10 mile tempo workout today, but I forgot and plotted a fun hilly route instead. So I threw in two fast miles at the end of the run... I figure it counts because my legs were fatigued from the massive hills I tackled, right?
Super excited to finally be in a month with RACES on the calendar! I haven't done a race since new year's eve, just been base building and working on half-marathon speed. Bring it on, March!!

3/1 = 10.5 miles
So, I am normally not a trail runner but I decided to explore some local trails this morning. I have been pretty bored with my regular running routes.
I stared out on the green beginners trail. This is what I usually stick with because I’m an epic klutz. I’m always afraid I am going to fall to my death.
For some reason, I decided to hop over to the blue “intermediate” trail this morning ... and quickly got lost. Lesson learned - not all things that LOOK like trails ARE trails. 🙄
I ran in circles for a while until I found another trail marker. A “black” expert trail marker (complete with warning signs and everything). Not knowing what else to do, I ran/hiked my way to the end of the black trail. It was really hard and weird things hurt now. 😂
I do feel like a kind-of bad *kitten* saying I ran on a “expert” trail.

Hoping to get back into running after quite a bit of time off. 20 miles a month would be a stretch for me in my current state.9

I hadn't seen that particular clip, but that's where I want to be. Running because it's fun, for as long as I live. Even if I don't make it to 100.
That 100 year old guy looks a bit like one of the guys on our 70+ team. For now, I'm good enough for the 60+ team. God willing, in 7 years I'll be good enough for the 70+ team.14 -
@amymoreorless the first time I ever ran trails I did the same distance I normally run on roads at the time...6 miles I think...and had the same experience. It was so much harder and I felt so sore after I didn't know why people actually liked it.
Keep at it! Just like paved running it gets easier and, I think, more enjoyable.6 -

Keep at it! Just like paved running it gets easier and, I think, more enjoyable.
@7lenny7 It was fun! I was just surprised how much more difficult it was. It felt like going from the treadmill to the road when I first started running. Running is so much easier (and boring) on a treadmill.
I think I am going to turn my Friday morning long run into a weekly trail running day. However, I am going to have to find some less technical trails. Are there any good trail running websites that rate USA trails according to difficulty?4 -

I finished February with 132.33 miles on a goal of 130, so looks like my planning was pretty accurate. I'm going to up my mileage a little for March to take into account a couple extra days including an extra long run. First race of the year is tomorrow... I feel pretty good and prepared. The race site is in the NE section of the metro area and I'm in the SW, so about an hour away. There are 3 other guys from my running club that are running (1 is pacing), so we are riding up together. One of the guys that I do most of my training runs with is lining up with the 1:50 pacer, so I'm going to start there and see how I feel. I'm hoping I can hang with them for most of the race. My current PR is 1:53:39, so even if I don't break 1:50 on this race, hopefully I still end up with a PR. The 2nd race in the series in April is probably my best chance to break the 1:50 if I stay healthy.

Not that I'm aware of, at least not that rates them in that manner. From the sounds of your trail description, were you on mountain bike trails? I've never ran on MBX rails before but I imagine there are more twists and turns than the trails I run on, but less technical perhaps. I'll have to try out the MBX trails near our house some time.
Check out some websites like RootsRated, AllTrails, or Trail Run Project.
Perhaps your best option would be to see out the local trail running community for info, or look for a nearby running store which caters at least in part to trail runners.
Trails along a river are typically flat and easier, so you could look for those too.5 -

@7lenny7 Yes, they were mountain bike trails. I've run on the "easy" rated trails several times. Today was the first time venturing into the rocky/hilly more advanced trails.
I know lots of road runners but no one who enjoys trail running. I am going to look around for groups.
I am already a member of AllTrails so I will start poking around there. I use AllTrails to find the best hiking places. I know some great trails for hiking but I can't imagine running on them (I like hiking on really technically difficult trails).3 -

Oh! Trail Run Project rates trails according to difficulty! That is what I was looking for. Thanks, @7lenny7! This is how it rates the trail I ran today. I will poke around the site looking for something a little more beginner friendly.

Not to be a downer, but my March did NOT start out on a good note. I work at a daycare and the class I was in yesterday had 7 out sick and we sent 3 others home. They have the flu, a stomach virus, and strep. You guessed it. I woke up this morning with a horrible sore throat and fever. I went to the doctor at lunch and she said the strep test came back negative, but suggested I get on antibiotics anyway, just in case the test was wrong, since I was planning to go to IL next week to see my Uncle who had stage 4 lung cancer.
While I was waiting to get my prescriptions, I got the call that he had passed. So, now we will be going up for the funeral sometime next week, just don't know when yet.
I'm going to just rest all weekend and hope to feel better by Monday. Not sure when I'll be able to run next. I have had a goal of 25 miles for Jan and Feb and have missed it by less than 5 miles both months. Since I have no idea what the month will bring, I am going to stick with 25 miles, but my real goal is to NOT lose much of the fitness I have gained and be able to do my last run in March at least the same pace/distance that I did my last run in Feb...3 miles in 39:35 minutes.

I exceeded my goal for last month, but had made the goal conservatively. This month is conservative again compared to my 'real' training plan, which isn't in miles exactly, but translates roughly out to 163 miles. My much more conservative posted goal is 120 miles.

Started the month off with a long run! I'm out of town this weekend + early next week for a conference in Baltimore, so I got up early this morning to get my long run in before I had to head to the airport. I don't trust my sense of direction enough to risk trying a LR here, plus Baltimore has always seemed a little scary to me. Which honestly is kind of funny coming from someone who has lived in Chicago for 10 years

My goal was 4 but I was just testing it out.6 -
2 miles at pt office treadmill. Today was the first time I was there during patient hours. Which one, meant it was really warm in the building, and two meant other people were in the room with the treadmill, which made me self conscious. (Oh how quickly I get gym related social anxiety when I don’t have to deal with it.)

Shin splints. Sigh. Tips? I think its from ramping up too quickly after basically 6 weeks of off and on running. Definitely not the posterior tendon, it's along the front medial side and in front of the malleolus, not more medial and behind the malleolus like I usually get. Not bad, just annoying. I'm rolling, massaging and having 2 rest days.6

I just updated the February challenge, and haven't had a chance to catch up here - but I am back to running again (yay!). I managed to get runs in on both the last day of February and the first day of March here in Scottsdale, AZ.
Today's total was just 2.9 miles. I don't have a March mileage goal yet. I guess my goal right now is to get back to regular running and feeling good about it. Assuming I go ahead with the Spartan race next weekend - survive and have some fun with that.
I'll probably be back with some more concrete goals and try to catch up with you all later. Happy March!6 -
@avidkeo - calf stretches and rolling your calves. From what the PT told me it is your calf muscles that pull on the tendons(?) in front that cause shin splints. I also really liked rubbing/massaging with ice right along my shin where they hurt.
We are at agility today and all weekend so no run until Monday. I am typically on my feet most of the day though and get over 15k steps so it is exercise!5
