I went out for 5k this morning. Left leg was aching a bit before I went out but eased around 3k. I did the squat rockers @rheddmobile suggested and no pain since getting back - though only been an hr. I'm worried it's my shoes - the ache got worse when I out my shoes on this morning but then I've been bare feet all weekend hanging out St home. but then it's not my usual pain. It "feels" like it's in the ankle but when I massage it's definitely along the tibia with no pain on the tendon in the ankle and foot, suggesting referred pain. So I think I've just ramped up too fast, I had that 23k run/walk without training 2 weeks ago and then I've kicked into running 5 days regularly and minimum of 5k, where the few weeks prior I was doing 3-4 km with the occasional 5k.
Am I over thinking this? I really don't want it to be shoes because that means I have no choice but to make a 2hr drive to town. And these are brand new. I honestly think its overdoing it and I'll just run gentle 5ks for the next few weeks and stretch/massage to help it settle...
You might hate this, but I remember my coach telling me that over 80 percent of the time, shin splints are caused by shoes...2 -
@ContraryMaryMary woo hoo looks like you had a blast! I love Rotorua. I need to find ways of travelling more to do more events, we are just so far away from everything sigh
We took the entire family (and another whole family) and Friday off to make a whole, long weekend of it. Such a blast - luging, sky swing, Rainbow Springs, hot pools, the whole Rotorua thing. Was awesome.3 -
Way to go, @7lenny7 and Kody! Sorry you got stranded, but I'm glad you were able to avoid actually being on the roads during the storm. My grandparents-in-law live in KC but we've never visited in the winter, although we have been stuck between the cities and Sioux Falls visiting family more than once. One time we had the dogs with us and had a really tough time finding a place that would take them and wasn't full.1

Or i can wait till 130pm. Put my stuff on the bleachers and run on a track where it's 45 degrees. And all i have to do is watch out for people who don't follow the rules
I am sure you have decided by now... but I would go for where I am not running in circles nonstop over running in circles.
My stomach decided for me (autoimmune flare). I'll be shuffling a few miles later with my .02 mi laps
Long run tomorrow. Laps.
Tuesday too.
Marathon a month a way11 -
@MobyCarp
About the Raynaud syndrome, maybe the topic as been discussed here and I´m not saying anything new but while you dont manage to talk to your doctor I´ll share my tip; besides what you will already be doing, it might be good to warm your fingers in steam when you get home even if they dont feel very cold (last year I was having it 3/4 times per week for about 45min and I realised, that for me, the steam was the fastest way to relax the vessels; this year I did it everytime I felt the fingers kind of cold and had just one minor episode in one whole year).

The only way to know for sure would be to run in different, known good, shoes. If the problem goes away/improves then it was the shoes. If not, then it might be something else.
I knew you'd say that. sigh. Its been several hours, and the pain is greatly reduced after the stretching that I did, no where near what it was this morning. so convincing me its not the shoes, but ramping up too fast, and stretching is the way to go.
PS, oww to groin pains. amazing how we can run forever but something as stupid as standing out of a chair can throw us completely.0 -

Yeah you had to say it didnt you. lol. I'm going to see out this week, stretching and massaging, see what happens, especially as I'm much better now than I was this morning before my run, it might just be that I'm tight in the calves and the stretches are doing it (I can hope). I also spent a lot of time jumping with miss 2.5 on the trampoline yesterday, that cant have helped anything, probably why I was aching this morning. If at the end of the week I'm worse, I will go to Whangarei (mutter mutter groan) and get properly fitted, and put it down to a lesson learned.
I'm going to Rotorua in August for a conference, and are taking the family, and the week before as holiday, to do the total tourist thing. Cant wait!5 -
@rusgolden this may work. If not maybe @garygse still has the design.. i have it at home.
I just realized this is SISU. Not embrace the suck haha, silly me. 😕 Maybe Gary will design an ETS shirt? Ah well.
nope wont work...

Thank you @Elise4270 --- Zazzle says it is a private design (maybe that is why you said it won't work...). All good... My DW probably doesn't think I need another running shirt right now anyway. Lol.0 -
I know many of you saw my post on Strava, but posting here for more detail...
Yesterday I completed my 4th half marathon and was able to trip 20 seconds off my PR time on a really difficult course. Was a crisp 22 degrees at gun time with a light wind. I lined up with my training buddy from our running club who is a bit faster than me with the 1:50 pacers. He was going to run with the lead pacer and kick it up a bit if he was feeling good and I was going to try and hang with the rear pacer for as long as I could, which ended up being a little over 7 miles. I would fall back a bit on uphills and then catch up on downhills, but wasn't able to keep up after that. When I was about a half mile from the finish I heard one of the other guys from the running club yelling for me and when I looped around to enter the track we was there encouraging me and running beside me and then I hit the track and kicked it into high gear... track section was about 3/4 around to the track. I was really laboring with my breathing but kept up my fast pace thru the finish. All in all, I am pleased with my effort and result. The next race in the series next month I should be able to trim more time off my PR and I would like to get under 1:50. A few pics below and the race certificate... the group photo are the others in the running club.20 -
Here it is. May 2018 page 6. @orphia ‘s Design is pg 5. Aww i miss running.
Finnish flag thrown in for fun. And morse code.5 -
@quilteryoyo So sorry about your uncle-hugs to you and your family (and get well, too!)
@rheddmobile Thank you. It looks like that was some flood. Glad they have a detour already set. Also looks like a really nice area to run.
@martaindale Thank you. Sorry that your daughter had a disappointing competition. Being last can be a little disheartening.
@7lenny7 I agree that running in the snow is definitely a lot harder than on clear ground. Unfortunately, miles is miles. Effort on the other hand.... Love the pictures of your dog in the snow. Looks like he/she really enjoys it. Just read your race report. Wow, that looks really cold and intense. You and Kody did great!
@rusgolden Congratulation on the PR!

@7lenny7 fantastic race report. That looks miserable and I'm so impressed with you and Kody for completing it and apparently having some fun too! You guys are tough!
@rusgolden congrats on your half marathon PR! Awesome job!
Long travel day for me so no chance to run. I am not happy to be back in the snow but ready to get in my own bed.4 -
@rusgolden well done!!!1

Seriously! And Kody is ELEVEN? Dang. For a dog his size that is pretty darn up there. Impressive both of you!

Still hurts to even move from sitting to standing. Gonna miss the important 10 mile run today. Ah well. I have much harder training weekends ahead to make up for it9

@rusgolden congratulations!2

All that babbling and I forgot the swag photo.
As I mentioned, I got a hoodie at packet pickup. The photo shows the logo on the back. Upon finishing the race I got a 20M finishers mug and a sticker. I like the mug more than the medal we got last year because I have more use for a mug (though I have plenty already). Kody got the medal on the right. The tornado is on a swivel so it spins around. It's the same medal I got last year.
I do think I had mild frostbite on my feet. They were numb until I got back to the house I was staying at and while taking a hot shower, they really started to sting. Yesterday and today they also felt more sensitive while running in the cold. I've had this before and it's a temporary deal.

@7lenny7 I can't decide if your race is more awesome or more horrifying! The frozen divots knocking your feet all around sounds like a worse version of the terrain which just flattened me at my half - large stony gravel over sand. It was just exhausting on my hips never landing straight and always sliding, I can't imagine doing that only for miles and miles with wet feet in slush! Also, I am a huge Kody fan!
@rusgolden Congrats on a great race!
@PastorVincent Hope your pull isn't serious, it must be so frustrating to get injured when you weren't even running!4 -
@rusgolden Congratulation on the PR! You'll break 1:50 soon. You are so close!2

Got some shuffling miles in. Then, spent time rolling my tight calves.
Long run or bust tomorrow11 -
March goal: 80 miles
3/3: 7.43 miles
7.43/80 miles completed
Finally got a run in for March. I hate when the 1st falls on a rest day. Especially when it falls on Friday since I usually have Friday and Saturday as rest days. But I finally ran today and I got 7.43 miles done. I would have liked to go a little further, but it was so cold. I am so ready for spring. I know that spring will be short and I'll be complaining about the heat soon enough, but I find the heat easier to tolerate than the cold. My run today was good. But 20 mph north winds making 34F feel like 22F is just too cold for me. I did alright since I ran mostly west and then mostly east, but I had to run straight north to get back home and it was brutal. I did see the dogwoods and redbuds have bloomed and a few other trees, plus irises and daffodils are starting to bloom so spring is on the way. But today sure was cold and I think it is going to be pretty cold for the next few days.
I think I'm about 60 posts behind so I'm going to go back now and see if I can get caught up. I'm sure there was lots of good running this weekend so I'll just says congrats to everyone who raced, I'm looking forward to reading the reports. And welcome to all the newcomers to the monthly running challenge. It is a really fun group.
2019 Races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon11 -
@rusgolden congrats on an awesome race and a PR to boot! Nice shirt, too.
@PastorVincent I sure hope you get that pain sorted out ASAP. Take the time you need to let it heal properly.
@MegaMooseEsq We used to live in KC a long time ago and 3 or 4 times we'd get stuck in Iowa on the way up or way back when visiting our families in Minnesota for Thanksgiving. We always though traveling for Thanksgiving would be safer but it never seemed to work out that way.
@ContraryMaryMary great group photo!
@juliet3455 the river routes I normally see run right along the river and are in the flood plain so are very flat. I didn't think about other areas having different characteristics.
@hoshaugh73 that trail looks beautiful! I hear it calling my name. After yesterday's tough snow run, that dry dirt looks pretty good right now.
@workaholic_nurse I'm glad you enjoyed the trails!
@Avidkeo I have no help or advice for you but I hope you get those shin splints sorted out soon.

Just 5 miles tonight in -25F/-32F wind chill. I stayed in my immediate neighborhood because it's relatively protected by wind but there were a few stretch were the wind had some serious bite. The run yesterday just wiped me out and it was all I could do to just get out the door at all. Monday is normally a rest day for me but I think I'll go for a short run tomorrow. I really need to get some more miles on my feet and work on my consistency. I need to run when I'm scheduled to matter how I feel, no more excuses.
One nice thing about running in the 'hood is that I was able to run at a higher pace. It wasn't blazing, but it wasn't a slog either.
It's been a good weekend for wildlife. Yesterday while trail running we kicked up a beautiful red fox and tonight I had a bald eagle soaring above me for quite a while.

@7lenny7 It's a gorgeous trail! Best part is, it's less than a mile away from my house!
Congrats on your run and thanks for sharing your race report. My dog and I are just starting to do longer runs together, 9 miles is the furthest she's gone so far, but it's good to see she can probably build up to 20 miles!

March goals: Run 100+ miles, stay healthy & keep up with marathon training plan
3/1 - travel/rest
3/2 - 5.4 km run with a fast friend (included a big hill and observation tower that we power-hiked), plus a 5.6 km group hike during which my child cried the ENTIRE TIME. We'll call that mental toughness training.
3/3 - travel/rest
3/4 - dirt track 7k run (6x800@5kP w/200 recovery +1k cooldown) while my other kid played soccer in the middle of the track
