@Avidkeo Rocker squats (hold squat position while rising on your toes, then lifting your toes and standing on your heels) during warm up stopped my shin splints. My understanding is that it gets your tendons freely moving before you start using them. Rocker squats also stretch your calves, which goes with what @shanaber is saying.4

Yesterday was planned rest day, but today is 10 miles, and tomorrow is 20, however, Sunday is always a busy day for me so I might do 20 today, and see how tomorrow goes. Did not think about that very well when I picked this plan - it has all the long runs on Sundays. Might have to just swap Sat/Sun on it for the rest of the plan but then would need to remove the Friday rest day or the Saturday long run will not be as effective training wise. HRM. Not sure.5

Keep at it! Just like paved running it gets easier and, I think, more enjoyable.
@7lenny7 It was fun! I was just surprised how much more difficult it was. It felt like going from the treadmill to the road when I first started running. Running is so much easier (and boring) on a treadmill.
I think I am going to turn my Friday morning long run into a weekly trail running day. However, I am going to have to find some less technical trails. Are there any good trail running websites that rate USA trails according to difficulty?
Not that I'm aware of, at least not that rates them in that manner. From the sounds of your trail description, were you on mountain bike trails? I've never ran on MBX rails before but I imagine there are more twists and turns than the trails I run on, but less technical perhaps. I'll have to try out the MBX trails near our house some time.
Check out some websites like RootsRated, AllTrails, or Trail Run Project.
Perhaps your best option would be to see out the local trail running community for info, or look for a nearby running store which caters at least in part to trail runners.
Trails along a river are typically flat and easier, so you could look for those too.
Oh! Trail Run Project rates trails according to difficulty! That is what I was looking for. Thanks, @7lenny7! This is how it rates the trail I ran today. I will poke around the site looking for something a little more beginner friendly.
@amymoreorless I used the Trail Run Project to find the trail I did on Wednesday. It was marked as "84% runnable" and a blue square I think. I ended up hiking 90% of it. Definitely scout out photos of the trail if possible to see what the terrain actually looks like But I love that the TRP has an app, so you can make sure you aren't getting lost if you're somewhere with multiple trails, etc.

I'm in for 50 miles! I'm hoping for more but work restrictions, weather (I'm an outside runner), and my son's activities may limit more. I've never been a runner until this year where physical and mental health are a part of my New Year's Better Me resolution. I'm hoping to participate in my first marathon in October. 🤞8

@Avidkeo It's the Nike Run Club app. I clicked on their profile but it did not provide any info. But yeah, even 45 miles for 2 days in a row is a stretch to believe. Not that it matters, as it's not between runners. I just could never imagine "cheating" on these things.
@katharmonic Welcome to AZ! You are here just when we got warm LOL3 -
@quilteryoyo very sorry for your loss!0

Late to the party again but finally here! I should be aiming for 50 miles this month as have my first half marathon in May, but realistically I dunno .I realise how defeatist that sounds so let's regain- I'm aiming for 50. Good start today with 6.1 miles on a windy day!

March Running
03/01: 11.07 mile long run
03/02: 3.50 mile recovery run
Total: 14.57 miles
Run notes:
Ran a miserable 3.5 miles on hotel treadmill this morning. I slept really horribly last night and it felt like a sauna in the gym so I was dying the whole time. Just one of those runs where every mile feels like five and you are literally counting down the seconds until it's over haha. Oh well, hopefully I'll be exhausted enough tonight to sleep better and have a good run tomorrow!
Registered races:
- Excalibur 10 Miler (3/17)
- Wintrust Lakefront 5K (4/13)
- Ravenswood Run 5K (4/28)
- Space Coast Half Marathon (12/01)13 -
3-1 Rest
3-2 10.5k easy
March Total: 10.5k
March Goal: 175k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Nice day to run. Partly cloudy, 32 degrees F, and a light wind that kept switching around so it could blow in my face.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K
6-1 Freedom 5K
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5k10 -
3/1 = 10.5 miles
3/2 = 12 miles
Just another boring run through suburbia. We are scheduled to get thunderstorms tomorrow and the temp is going to drop from the mid 70s to 26 (Fahrenheit). I almost signed up for a half in San Antonio on Sunday. I am really glad my bank account told me “NO!”. The weather is going to suck.
@quilteryoyo Ugh. What a terrible week. Take care of yourself!
March Goal Miles 150 / Miles to Date = 22.5 miles
Upcoming Races:
3/9 = Zooma Texas Half
4/6 = Wanderlust Half
5/4 = Wisconsin Marathon (Mittens Challenge Part 1)
5/5 = Kalamazoo Marathon (Mittens Challenge Part 2)
6/15 = Fit Foodie 5k10 -
@girlinahat Ordered you something. So funny, since its going to the UK i got a "Roger Dodger, we got your order! (#46906)" email rather than a traditional US greeting! Haha!
No hints... I'll update when you should receive it.
ETA if anyone else wants to send her something but the shipping is a deal breaker, pm me and I'll give you my address and I'll send it.8 -

Good morning and Happy Saturday, everyone!
March Running Miles
3/2/19: 10 miles
March Mileage Total: 10/80 miles
Had to do all 10 miles this morning on the treadmill. I was really dreading it, but it ended up being OK. It's raining cats and dogs here, so I decided it was the best option. Thankfully "The Umbrella Academy" on Netflix kept me company.
Upcoming Races
3/17/19 -- Shamrockin' Half Marathon
4/27/19 -- American River Parkway Half Marathon
6/2/19 -- Kaiser Permanente Women's 10K11 -
March
1 3.5
2 5
Total: 8.5 out of 135
I was scheduled for 14 this morning. I went out with the attitude of just get in what you can. I was tired and had almost no energy. Did a combo run/walk (avg pace was almost 2 minutes slower/mile than usual). I got to about 4.25 and decided to push to 4.5 but it turned into 5 (not sure how that happened) and then had a severe coughing fit and called it a day. I hate feeling like 99% healthy and not being able to do everything! I know it takes time to build back up and am thankful I had a solid base already so I wasn't starting all over again.14 -
My goal for this month is to complete C25K and run a 5k.
3/1--W6D1 completed.
Races:
3/24--Mercer Island 5k
6/8--Fall City Day Run 10k
7/6--Bellingham Road Race

Whew, It took me forever to find the March thread! This is what happens when you can only log on every couple of days, lol!
I'm in for 50 again this month. So far the year is progressing nicely....slowly...but nicely, lol.
6 -
Hi all, I'm new to this but I just started running this year and completed C25K in February. My goal for March will be 40 miles running. I also want to have a goal of at least 10 additional miles of walking but not sure if that's part of this challenge or not. Good luck everyone!
P.S. I'm looking for motivated new running friends, preferably those who log meals daily
3/2 Run 3.1 (walk 1.0)12 -
March Running Totals (miles)
3/1 – rest day
3/2 – 20.05 paced run + solo miles
March running total to date – 20.05
Nominal March mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Cut back before St. Patrick’s Day weekend, run the 8K hard, use the half as a training race. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage.
Today's notes – Started the month with a planned rest day. On my rest day, I registered for another race. Sunset House is a Rochester Runner of the Year race, but it's organized by non-runners and is firmly in the 20th century as far as communication. Got the application in the mail as part of a charity information/fundraiser mailing. Filled it out and mailed in a paper check (barbaric!) before I could lose the paper, because that's how this one rolls.
Today's plan called for 20 miles. After running 16 miles near MP pace on Thursday, I went to the paced run program to slow myself down today. Ran 9 miles with the 8:30 pace group, averaged 8:27 and felt like I hadn't worked at all. None of the other 3 guys in that group were going on for the next 6 miles offered, so I set of on that route solo. I'm not a fan of short loops, and the 6 miles was organized as 2 mile loop, 3 mile loop, 1 mile loop to accommodate potential different training needs that weren't actually present in the 8:30 group. So I extended the first loop by about 0.9 mile, running some roads that were pleasant and well cleared of snow. Then I went to extend the second loop, and ended up just winging it on roads I knew and a few I didn't. Still ended up needing a 1 mile loop when my ad hoc second loop was done, but that was better than three short loops and still needing 5 miles. The 11 solo miles came in at a 7:55 average pace, more like what I should target for long runs than Thursday's run.

Hi everyone, I would like to join this challenge for the month of March. I am not much of a runner but I am trying to complete the C25k. This is my second go around with it, the first time I got injured and had to stop. But I am back at it, just finished week one. I would like to be in for 30miles and a stretch goal is to be able to run 2miles continuously. I have finally made it to a mile, but it is still difficult.
3/1: 2.43miles
3/2: rest day

Sorry me again, unashamedly bragging. I have just worked out to see my previous stats from Runkeeper (yes, I am useless with technical things) and as I said today's long run was significantly faster. Last week I did 8.8km in 1:08, today 10.33km in 1:11! Still slow but really pleased with that.14

Jumping in again this month. Shooting for 40 miles .10

Thanks to everyone for the thoughts of sympathy and hugs. I have been on the couch almost all day today. Still have a fever. YUCK! I just want to feel a little bit normal again. I know it's only been like 36 hours, but it feels like forever. LOL
Welcome to all those joining this month. This group is really supportive, regardless of your fitness level.14 -

12 miles seems to be my wall lately. Was feeling good for the 1st 7, but all of a sudden my legs felt like lead. Not sure what is going on. It was slightly warmer today (43F), but drizzling the whole time. I used hand warmers this time, and only one finger white. So progress
Welcome all you new folks!12 -
@RunsOnEspresso Arizona weather has been fantastic! I heard it snowed here last week so I'm glad I was here for temps in the 70s instead.
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
03/01/19 :::: 2.9 :::: 2.9
03/02/19 :::: 5.5 :::: 8.4
One last run this morning along the canal in Scottsdale. I had to laugh at the people I passed who had long pants, long sleeves, gloves and a headband for 57 degree weather. It definitely is what you get used to. I felt great after I got through the first mile or so - better than yesterday's shorter run. I feel encouraged that I haven't totally lost all stamina.
My conference finished up this morning (well, I finished up a bit earlier than the actual conference ended) and my friends and I headed to a spa for the afternoon. After a massage and sitting at the pool all afternoon I'm feeling really happy, as long as I don't think about getting up super early tomorrow and the all day travel back to/through a possible snowstorm. I'll just ignore that reality for a few more hours.
