So was planning on 10 miles today, but think I will have to skip them. See we were awoken in the middle of the night by a fire in my bedroom (we got it all under control and really just had a lot of smoke to deal with) so essentially I am now about 24 hours from running a hilly marathon with no sleep. As much as I think I could handle a few miles, it is probably not a good idea and would risk injury.
So, this one time I will take my own advice I guess...13 -
@MegaMooseEsq That's a very nice time and a great report.
@PastorVincent Hope both you and Mrs. Pastorvincent are both OK.1 -
The weather has gone insane this weekend and mixed up the seasons. 19°C/66°F today! Fortunately it's supposed to return to proper spring temperatures tomorrow (i.e., 10°C colder!). Yesterday I cut my run a bit short (5.2km instead of 6.4km) because I was dressed way, way too hot. Today I was better prepared in short tights and a sleeveless shirt, but I still felt like baking in the sun. Should have taken something to drink with me maybe - I changed the second half of my run so that I would pass by a fountain with drinking water, only to realize it's still in winter-mode (=switched off to prevent the pipes from freezing). So the last part of my15.2km was kinda like this, only with drink instead of food:
(eta: I probably posted this picture before, but I love it. I might get it printed and framed one day , it's so true!)

@MegaMooseEsq Brilliant race, congratulations on the PR!
@ContraryMaryMary on your 10K PR too!
@PastorVincent glad nothing bad happened! I remember a fire starting in my room one night when I was a kid, scary stuff! Really made me a believer in smoke detectors.2 -

This is my entire philosophy for long runs. If I am too close to a bailout point, my will might falter!

@ContraryMary - Congrats on your 10k PR!
@MegaMooseEsq - Congrats on your 5k PR! You did great! Thanks for the pictures, too. They remind me of 'home'... I never lived in MSP but was sort of nearby (on a farm outside River Falls, WI... decades ago!), and still have lots of family in the area. I need to go back to visit. Maybe next year.
@polskagirl01 - I forgot about Decathlon stuff! I ordered the Wunjo yesterday and can't wait for it to arrive.
@PastorVincent - YIKES! I hope your family is all ok, and you don't have too much smoke damage!
I was going to run 2 miles this morning but my Achilles wasn't too happy when I got up. So instead, I took the dogs for a nice long walk. We went basically the same route as yesterday, in reverse, but since we didn't stop at the vet's office it was only about 3.75 miles. My hips were grumbling at me about halfway through and I really beat the *kitten* out of them and my legs with the foam roller and LAX ball when we got home. Less than 2 weeks to my first 10k!5 -
@PastorVincent Hope both you and Mrs. Pastorvincent are both OK.
No one is hurt. I guess I should tell the story in case it is a warning for someone else...
Essentially we had a "warm mist" humidifier had a heating element to heat the water enough to create steam. We have had it for many years, maybe a decade or more. Well, last night it ran out of water and the switch that supposed to turn it off when that happens failed so the heating element was getting full power with no water to cool it. It got hot enough that the plastic casing was melting and filling the bedroom with smoke from burning plastic. We got it unplugged and moved into the stone kitchen sink where I ran the cold water tap over it until it was no longer a danger.
Sucker got hot. At first, the water was instantly boiling when it hit the element. Took a while to cool it down to safe levels.
Thing is I was not deeply asleep. I normally have no trouble sleeping at night, most times asleep in minutes, but last night I never did get into a deep sleep. Which meant I was awoken quickly when the smoke reached me. Had I been out deeply I might not have known in time. It was sitting on a wooden nightstand. Had that caught it would have been a different night entirely.
Thank God for sleepless nights!
11 -
Surprising really how much smoke came from it. The room was 3/4th full from ceiling to floor.1
-
@PastorVincent yikes that's terrifying, sorry for the lack of sleep but SO glad you were not sleeping well!

I had another good week of running this past week. I ended up sticking to my running schedule even though it would have fit into my life schedule better if I had swapped my Wed (Tempo)/Thu (Strength) days. I had swapped them the week before and felt like it was too difficult to have a Tempo Run, Pace Run, and Long Run without a day to rest the legs a bit. Worked out well, although legs still felt a bit fatigued on today's easy recovery run.
Will be reducing my miles a little bit this week for the 10K on Sat.
Hope everyone has a great week!

@PastorVincent - Wow that is scary! So glad it turned out ok and everyone is ok!
@MegaMooseEsq - Congratulations on your PR! I agree on liking the after race beer or whatever in theory. I always think it will be fun until after the race and then not so much especially with the crowds.
I ran Beat the Blerch with my daughter a couple of years ago. It was a lot of fun before and after and fun support along the way. Oh and of course cake, pbj sandwiches post race and donut eating competitions for great prizes (Beat the Blerch sweats!). The only issue we had was that the course was advertised as a gravel trail and a lot of it was really river stone. I had on road shoes and should have worn trail shoes instead. It was really hard on our feet and knees. If you can, try and get over and check out the course the day or so before so you can decide on your shoes.
@avidkeo - I am also finding the recovery to be much quicker with the Galloway method.4 -

I boycotted running yesterday with the return to winter - it was windy and snowy and cold - but managed to get in a long(er) run this morning. The weather was much improved, warmer if not really "warm" and sunny.
This is my first run over 5ish miles in more than a month. I'm glad I got it done this morning. I'm so busy and such a ball of stress right now it's hard to take the time but it always makes me feel better. I'm not optimistic about the next few weeks but will try for at least short runs to maintain some consistency and keep myself from going too crazy.
Sorry not to comment right now, will come back later I hope.7 -

I had a wonderful 9.31 mile run today. The weather was absolutely lovely. I went around 7:30 so just after sunrise. It was right at 60F and just beautiful. I decided to start out a different direction to kind of change my route a little. I won't be doing that route again. I was in the 2nd mile when I passed 2 dogs who were not in their fence. The funny thing was I saw them and they saw me but didn't seem concerned. Then about a block and a half after I had passed them I heard them barking and they were kind of running after me. I think they were just chasing me away and not trying to catch me, but it was still kind of unnerving. Then a couple of blocks later while I was still on alert I saw a little terrier out in his yard. He barked at me but didn't come out into the street. I wasn't really scared of him, but I did think that it would be ironic if I "escaped" from the 2 big dogs and was actually attacked by a tiny dog. After that the run was less eventful. It was just one of those awesome long runs where your mind goes to all these different, interesting places.
I noticed as I got near 10K that I was running a pretty good pace and thought I might be able to get a 10K PR. I didn't quite get it, but I did get my 2nd best 10K effort on Strava. I haven't ever had a chance to run an actual 10k race. They don't have many near here and the only one I know of is the same day as the HM I am running in May. I would rather run the HM, but I would like to get a chance to run in a 10K race at least once. I just don't really want to have to travel overnight for it.
I was almost home when I was startled by a loud gobbling sound. It was 2 huge turkeys in someone's front yard. Who keeps turkeys in their yard? They were really big and very loud.
Congrats to @martaindale and @ContraryMaryMary on your 10K PRs! Congrats on the 5K PR to @MegaMooseEsq!
@katharmonic I was thinking your rock climbing looked kind of fun until I saw the last picture. Nope! Too scary for me!
@PastorVincent I'm glad you weren't sleeping well and that you and Mrs. PastorVincent are both ok. A fire in the bedroom while you are sleeping could have turned out to be very tragic.

Nominal March mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Cut back before St. Patrick’s Day weekend, run the 8K hard, use the half as a training race. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage.
Today's notes – THe plan for today called for 30 minutes easy. I cheated, and penciled in 6 miles. Got out just past 4 PM, temperature 50° F (10° C) per my porch thermometer, 48° F (9° C) per Garmin. Wind was WSW at 16 mph. Wore shorts and a tee, but bearing in mind my last run when the temperature was near this level I also wore light gloves. I could have used long sleeves going into the wind, but I was okay. My hands were a little warm late in the run, but I suspect I would have had issues early without the gloves.
For the entire run, my legs felt heavy. Not problem heavy, just late marathon training cycle tired legs heavy. Ran easy by feel, and saw that the HRM had a fake high reading early. When it eventually came down, the HR was reasonable; but it still didn't feel as easy as easy should feel.
Other than the tired legs, it was a pleasant run. I thought I was just slogging along at what passes for easy with tired legs, then when I got done I looked at the mile splits: 8:02, 7:44, 7:43, 7:36, 7:30, 7:26, and a 7:17 pace for the tag end. I have no idea how those nice progressively faster splits happened on variable terrain when I wasn't particularly trying to do anything other than not challenge the hills.
Rest day tomorrow. I need it. Cutback week this week, or start of 3 week taper, depending on how I view it. It's not quite time to go crazy yet, but I see that time coming.

@PastorVincent I'm so glad you woke - house fires are one of my biggest fears. A good reminder to check the smoke alarms!2

@PastorVincent - House fires are indeed dang scary! So glad it turned out ok.
@MegaMooseEsq - Congratulations on your PR!0 -
@ All :
We do have smoke detectors, and as soon as I opened the bedroom door and the smoke poured out into the hall it went off. Never thought about having one in the bedroom before.2 -

@simcon1 I got the goretex ones as well - they worked really well in the snow at the Spartan race and my feet stayed dry. Hope you enjoy your new shoes!
@ContraryMaryMary congrats on a 10k personal best! You'll crush the next one on rested legs!
@MegaMooseEsq great job on your 5k PR! Nice time and great report. I would take cornflake-crusted french toast and rum punch post-race as well!
@PastorVincent, congrats on your 26 mile run and, so scary about your house fire. So glad you are all ok.
@kgirlhart glad you survived the dogs unscathed and had a great run! I also wish there were more 10ks around.
The rock climbing really was fun and once I was up there I didn't think it was too scary. The rope made it feel really secure. We even practiced a couple of "falls" and even in our hands as beginners it felt safe, and the coming down is really fun.
@Elise4270 - looks like you've been getting around more. Take it easy though!
Sorry if I missed any racers or news - great job to all. Courage and fortitude for the week ahead!

Well I’m really glad it woke you! That’s a good reminder to all of us that have and didn’t check our detectors with the time change. They are annoying, but let’s all pop up there and change a battery (it’ll keep the darn things from chirping in the middle of the night- must be the ONLY time a battery goes low). Those with a furnace or gas, also check your CO alarms.
If you can not afford to go buy a detector for every bedroom in your home, the local fire department usually has a program. Holler at those fine folks for assistance. And good lord, if you need one, I can spare 10$ plus US shipping and send you one,
Stay safe my friends.12 -
@katharmonic Yay! Rock climbing!! I love it so much. I'm so happy to see other people try it out!
@ContraryMaryMary Congrats on the PR!0 -
@PastorVincent I'm glad to hear that the worst of it ended up being a smoked filled room and the loss of a humidifier. Our local code requires smoke detectors in every sleeping area and on every level of the house, preferably all tied together so that if one goes off, they all go off, but that's tough to do unless it's new construction. Great job on the solo marathon! Some great vertical gain with it too. I'm envious of that. And that day of sleet, freezing rain, well below freezing and wind --- that describes my least favorite weather to run in. I'm not sure I'd run in in either, certainly not for 26+ unless it was race day. Then, sure.
@amymoreorless there are great brands of trail shoes but there is no "best". Just like road shoes, what's best for one runner may not be best for another runner. Most road shoe makers also sell trail shoes so if you have a preferred road shoe, see what that manufacturer offers for the trail. Next I'd look for a local running store which caters to, or has good experience with trail running and get their input. I've never run on trail so sharp it cut up shoe soles so I can't help with that.
My favorite trail shoes are Altra Lone Peaks but I just got a pair of Altra Superiors which I'm eager to try out. These are less cushioned than the LP's. Altra are zero drop which may take some getting used to if you've not run in zero drops before. Other brands I see often on other trail runners are Salomon, Saucony Peragrines, Hoka One One, Brooks, Nike, Merrell and Inov8. All quality brands, you just need to go through the process to figure out what works best for you. Like @juliet3455 says, shoe store return policy is very important when trying a new model. For manufacturer's defects though, usually the manufacturer will make it right. I've had Altras with 250 miles on them and ASICS with 275 miles on them both fail and get replaced with a brand new pair by the manufacturer. I'm honest with the miles I have on them and tell them I understand if they're out of warranty but in neither case was it an issue.
As far as hydration packs I think that's also going to be a personal preference because the comfort of fit is so important. I love my Ultimate Direction Scott Jurek pack but it would be silly for me to tell you it would work great for you because our bodies and preferences are so different. I only use it for longer runs where I need the water volume and other storage. Otherwise I find my 24oz bottle with a handheld grip and storage compartment works well for runs of 15 miles or less.
The ability to try on a vest and run around in it with weight is very important to me because at 6' 5", not all XL packs are going to fit me well. I'd be very leery of buying a pack I couldn't try on first. If I was so tempted, I'd have to find a place with low shipping fees and a good return policy like REI. You may not find it sucks until your halfway into your run and you'll want to be able to return it if that happens. I'd be interested in the Wunjo because I like the price but there's no where around here where I can try one on. @PastorVincent you've said its the best you've found by far...what else have you tried to compare it to?
@Elise4270 I didn't realize Mizuno made trail shoes. The On Cloudventure was my favorite trail shoe for over a year until I started wearing Altras. I never had a problem with anything getting stuck in the pods. And yes, I do have quite a collection of shoes. 10 pair in rotation (6 trail, 4 paved) and 8 pair in reserve (4 trail, 4 paved). I do have two pair for paved running and one for trail running which are very close to retirement though.
@polskagirl01 that path by the water looks beautiful but I'd be afraid I'd trip because I'd be looking around at everything, not looking at those raised and missing blocks! Otherwise that's great training for rocky, rooty trail.
Congrats to the weekend racers! @martaindale with the 10k PR, @ContraryMaryMary with a 10K PB, @MegaMooseEsq with a 5K PR and a great report!
@rheddmobile I would have loved to hear the rest of the flower stomping story to find out the litter girls logic.
@shanaber it's so good to hear that you're getting some good runs in! Congrats on getting in that race!
@Tramboman have you been getting enough sleep? When I get several consecutive runs which turn into slogs I can usually trace it back to either overtraining or undersleeping.2 -
It was a fine, if snotty, running weekend for me. I'm feeling much better but still dealing with the aftermath of a stuffy nose which turns quite runny when I run.
Saturday: 21 miles on gravel road with Kody with only 1 gel and 10 oz of water (Kody had much more)
Saturday: 14 miles of city road, solo, with no fuel and no water.
Friday night several of the local trail runners decided they didn't want to deal with the slush and ice on the trails and run gravel roads instead. A couple miles away we have a network of gravel roads where you can get up to 16 miles on one set of out and backs next to one of my favorite parks so I felt obligated to join them, even though they start much earlier than I tend to start. A 7 AM run start mean I had to get up at 5:15. I surprised myself and actually got up in time. We had a fantastic time. I'm not opposed to group runs but I don't join them very often and a very glad I made this one. We had 9 people and Kody (who was a very popular runner with the group). We went about 11 miles of the circuit before we got back to the parking lot and everyone but one other person was done, so she and I continued to run together for another 9 miles.
This gal was so warm and friendly and was quite an inspiration and I really hope to run with her again. She's 54 years old and has run multiple 100 mile ultras. She started running about 25 years ago. It started when she was 6 month pregnant, an alcoholic and a heavy smoker. She woke up one day, with the reality of becoming a mom hitting her hard and she decided she had to make a change. She quit drinking and smoking that day, so started walking for health, which lead to running which lead to trail running which ultimately led to ultrarunning.
I was so happy to be running with her talking about nothing and everything like we had known each other for years. Sometimes you just connect like that.
I hadn't intended for it to be an unfueled run (mostly) but with all the great conversation I just forgot to take in anything but the one gel, and then only because I was reminded to when I saw her take one. It appears my ultra fat-burning machine is still quite functional. since I never felt the lack of calorie intake affect my run.
I cannot say the same for today's run. On sore, tired legs I ran, and partly walked, 14 miles in 3 hours with no fuel and no water. Around 10 miles I really felt the slog hit and even on the flats I had to use my mental strength to run and often ended up walking anyway. Really I had no business running 14, but the realization that my 50M is only 5 weeks away kept me out there.
Here's our Saturday morning group:
I have a slight chance of still making goal if I push it this week and don't miss any runs.

You remember when I brought up the Sandlot Marathon a couple of months ago? 384 (and a half) laps around a baseball field? It happened last Saturday and the local news did a piece on it. I'm proud to say I know several people in the video, both race organizers and race participants. I'm hoping I get to do this next year.

@Tramboman and @quilteryoyo - I have seen some pretty fast tortoises especially when they are hungry!3

Cross training today meant an easygoing 14 mi bike ride with kids (my two plus an extra teen who hadn’t been on a bike in ages—they did great!). Bakery + bookshop is a powerful draw for this crew..
And I signed up for another race! I was motivated to have the occasion to run in my new trail shoes, and signed up for a 4.5 mi trail run that should fall at a reasonable place in the 1/2 marathon training. I couldn’t find a 10K that I wanted to do, particularly around some work travel that I have to do in the next month, so I subbed this in.
Then we all got distracted by the PNW running calendar, found a really close (like 1.5 miles away) obstacle run of the kind that my daughter’s been wanting to do in June or July. And then got preliminary buy-in from the 10 yo on a kids’ triathlon (which would be after a sprint triathlon for the adults—and maybe the 16 yo—the same day in July) Hmmm. Sometimes if I get the 10 yo on board, the 16 yo will join in too. There’s also a ~40 mi bike ride later in May that we’ll all do (we did this before without the little guy 2 years ago, but I think it will work for him this time too). Now I just hope that my work doesn’t all go to h*ll in a handbasket so I can do all these things!

Socialising at the weekend led to me having to move my workout schedule about, which meant swapping today's strength training and tomorrow's run round. Result: a very enjoyable 3.3km run to get Monday off to a good start. With the run-walk-run intervals I'm trying out my overall pace was actually faster than when I straight ran the same route last week, and I feel great now :-)
March goal: 40km Done: 39.5km. I got this! Really looking forward to gradually increasing distances, although with a week's hiking holiday at Easter April will include less running than usual.6 -
@PastorVincent I'm glad to hear that the worst of it ended up being a smoked filled room and the loss of a humidifier. Then, sure.
Thanks! There was one spot with greater than 25% grade! heh. That was not exactly run at race pace LOL
I used to have that same opinion about race day, but I hold to that less now. I started this running journey to reclaim my health, and for the most part, I have accomplished that. Well as much as can be reclaimed. I am WAY better off than the day I started at least.
Seems to me that running races "in any weather" runs contrary to the new goal of maintaining health. So for me, as a runner that is not in any of the competitive brackets, will likely never come close to a BQ, I have made the decision that weather like described would prevent me from showing up to a race. I mean I will race in "bad weather" as in rain, cold, and so on, I am just putting the cut off more towards favoring the goal of staying healthy instead of competing.
I am not saying this as a judgment on you or anyone else that runs in all weather. Your goals are simply different than mine. Different lines, different calls, different goals. It is all goodMy favorite trail shoes are Altra Lone Peaks but I just got a pair of Altra Superiors which I'm eager to try out. These are less cushioned than the LP's. Altra are zero drop which may take some getting used to if you've not run in zero drops before.
I ran my 26 miles on Saturday - which was mixed terrain between good roads, horrible roads, and trail, in the Altra Lone Peak 3.5. A great shoe, IMO. Was very much glad to have it when I hit deep slick mud that was covered by freshly fallen leaves. Had no idea it was there so was not ready for the lack of grip. Had I been in road shoes, probably would have fallen. In the Altras, I was fine. Just had to plan my next stride a bit better. As far as hydration packs I think that's also going to be a personal preference because the comfort of fit is so important. ... I'd be interested in the Wunjo because I like the price but there's no where around here where I can try one on. @PastorVincent you've said its the best you've found by far...what else have you tried to compare it to?
Excellent point. I can not say which ones I have tried other than camel pack because I have only tried them in stores, not on the run. My camel pack sucked on the run. It is in a closet somewhere There were THREE reasons I bought the Wunjo despite it being untried:
1) @JessicaMcB recommended them
2) @MobyCarp recommended them
3) Price point
Since buying it I have found it to be the perfect combination of lightweight and still carry stuff. It does not chafe me at all, and my wife now has one that she runs in all the time and she loves it too.
We did upgrade and buy insulated straws for them recently.
Since owning one I have found the company to be very friendly and easy to work with.
