@Elise4247 I used to run in Mizuno’s but they got too expensive. The soles wear out WAY too fast and the last time I tried to order shoes from their website I had a nightmare customer service experience. I tried to go back to New Balence but I think I kind-of hate their new Fresh Foam line... These were all road running shoes.
I bought a pair of $30 Saucony trail shoes at Academy a few months ago but they feel too wide. That’s what I wore today. They are now trashed. Sigh.... My feet are so persnickety!
@PastorVincent Thanks for the hydration bladder discount code! The ones I have been looking at are so expensive. I bought a $26 one on Amazon and used it today. The hydration thingy AND shoes are terrible now... 🙄3 -

Nominal March mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Cut back before St. Patrick’s Day weekend, run the 8K hard, use the half as a training race. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage.
Today's notes – Rest day today, and just getting around to posting about yesterday's run.
Went to club practice yesterday evening. Did my warmup, talked to Coach about where I was. The plan had me down for a 15 mile workout that I did 9 days earlier. I want to get my last 20 mile run before Boston in on Saturday (tomorrow, now.) Coach asked a female member what her target was for Boston; she said 3:16. Close enough, he told us to go run 5 to 6 miles at marathon pace. I'm targeting 7:20, she's targeting 7:30, we ran twice around the big block with up and down messing with any plan to hold a stead pace. Averaged something like 7:28 for 5.7 miles, but parts of it were closer to 7:00 than I should be in the first 20 miles of Boston.
I was more wiped out than I should be by a 6 mile run at marathon pace. Some of that is that I over-reacted to underdressing for Wednesday's run, and overdressed a bit yesterday. But I think most of it is the accumulation of getting beat up by marathon training. So on my rest day today, I'm making no effort to get 10,000 steps. Tomorrow I'll set out to run 20 miles. We may have some fresh snow, though the snow today has been melting when it hits pavement.
Then next week I start easing back on the mileage, before the serious taper begins the week after that.
24 days till Boston. The mental games are starting.

The snow in the forecast has not yet materialized but it's been cold and rainy all day. Not that I was outside much. Treadmill run this morning before circuit training - I meant to get there super early and only made it early enough to do 3 miles. But those 3 miles felt better than treadmill miles I've done recently so I felt positive about that. Still way slower than outside though.
Circuit training was another good session working on lots of upper arms - particularly pulling. While I managed 0 unassisted pull-ups, I did get over 24 using a light resistance band. I also did dead hangs and scap-ups. I wore my gloves this time and I think I'm fully convinced my plan to just "toughen up" did not work and it's much nicer to not tear my hands up every time. I think my pull-up plan is back on track - maybe a little more realistically this time and without a definite deadline (except maybe another Spartan race at the end of April, which I'm NOT committed to yet).
I think it might be a rare non-running Saturday tomorrow, or at the most a short one. The weather sounds crappy and I have a billion things to do so will swap for Sunday as my long(er) run. I am going to an indoor rock climbing expo class tomorrow though so I'm really excited to try that.

Yeah, I was shocked at how well price the Wunjo's were. My wife and I both use the X5 Ultra. I think @MobyCarp uses the X1 or something. I forget now.
For trail shoes, I like my Altra Lone Peak 3.5 but they are NOT cheap.3 -

Aw that’s too bad. We usually use a shoe company, roadrunner sports for shoes. They have great customer service. We do have the membership and I think even with out it they have a great return policy-can’t beat that if your shopping online. Who was in the saloman’s? Was it @rheddmobile or @katharmonic ?
Brooks is okay, they have a few trail shoes. I like the ravena and the cascadia was ok. Topo is the shoe I was trying to remember, I like them. Avoid the On clouds. They say trail, but maybe only if it’s dirt. I disliked how rocks and sticks get stuck in the pods. Annoying.
I have a few Merrill ‘s. They are alright- find I can do with a bit more cushion, but I really liked them- very light. I tried Scott -felt promising but rubbed hot spots. Let us know what you go with! Ooo shoes!3 -
11 miles 5his evening. Supposed to rain ALL DAY Saturday, so decided to get out for a few tonight, and maybe do a few more miles Sunday. Was a nice easy run, and a couple sprints crossing busy streets was kinda fun. Hit 5:14/mi.

I'm not a trail runner (yet) but I just got Salomon Speedcross4 before my Spartan race. I have only worn them 4 or 5 times now and most of that hiking in the snow rather than running, but I really like them so far. I'm really interested in trying them for more trail running and hiking this spring and summer. The traction seems fantastic. There was discussion in this thread previously that they are a narrow shoe and they definitely have a narrower toe box than my Brooks or Saucony shoes but again, so far so good for me.1 -

Let us know what you get and how you like them. I have that 40$ off UA if I spend 100. I thought about some shoes. No idea if they have trail shoes...
Wonder if I buy shoes, I can run? (Build it and they will come? Wear them and you can run? No?) I tried.
Thanks again @katharmonic ! I like thought of a the slightly narrower toe box.

Race day tomorrow! The goal for this race to is see if I can get under an hour on my 10k. I was on pace for it at my last race up to the last mile and a half when the crazy humidity and hills did me in. It should be cloudy and about 60 tomorrow morning, much nicer than my last race day. I guess we will see how it goes. I’m hopeful but it is not a gimme.
I went out for an easy run this morning with my husband. Working hard to get him on a more regular running schedule in hopes that he will train for the HM we are both signed up for this fall. His plantar fascia is tightening up so I am now also trying to talk him into actually stretching. So high maintenance!!

I'm back in business! 6 miles for Kody and I tonight. It felt better than expected and I kept a good pace up. Seems the only affect my cold had on my run was the crazy number of snot rockets I had.
Temps in the mid 40s F meant it was the first run of the year in shorts and shorts sleeves, which was nice.

amymoreorless wrote: »Things I have learned from trail running Fridays:
1) Its harder and I am a really slow trail runner.
2) running down hills on trails is terrifying!!!
3) I need to bring a lot more water. I think I need a bladder running thingy?
4) The trail today cut the soles of my running shoes up. They are trashed. It was nothing but cacti and jagged limestone. I think I need trail shoes if I am going to keep doing this Friday trail run stuff.
Group question: Best trail shoe brands? Best hydration bladder thingys?@amymoreorless yay! Another trail runner! ///
I also have some others around here... @shanaber has them too.. more of a minimal drop shoe. What brand do you usually wear? Do they have a trail shoe? What kind of shoes are you looking for? @juliet3455 is a trail runner too with good shoe experience.
I haven’t heard a bad review in any hydration pack. I like orange mud, Nathan’s are good, @PastorVincent has one he loves,... just don’t buy a cheap one and I think you are good there.
@Elise4270 is to kind @7lenny7 is far more qualified/experienced for trail running, mine's more of a controlled slog
I actually have 3 differant trail shoes in my collection:
Saucony Peregrine 8's ( Softest sole/foot bed of my trail shoes-gore tex for winter and cloth/poly for summer.
Mizuno Wave Ascend ( Firmer sole/foot bed than Saucony Peregrines- I think they are discontinued )
Salomon Speed-cross 4 - stiffest soul/foot bed a good choice of shoe for the sharp rocks as they won't get cut up like other shoes with softer sole's.
Store return policy is very important for me, I will pay a little more for a shoe from a store that takes them back with out hassle. I have returned Saucony's where the heel cup came apart at ~ 80km and Salomon's where the lace eyelets/reinforcing strip pulled off the shoe body at 30km. No questions no problems.
As a Duck Footed person I always look for the wide version.
Once you get into trail shoe's on some tough trail conditions is when you truly appreciate what they offer for traction and improved safety/confidence. Especially since you mentioned that running down hill was terrifying.
We have a trail with hills called Elevator, Parachute - no explanation required - and a favorite Mud Slide - think of a small spring bubbling water out of the ground over a 30 foot wide area causing the whole slope to be sloppy. Also there is Band-Aid Hill. A lot of the trails I run ( 60 - 80% of the terrain ) could be done in solid road shoes, it's the tough nasty spots that require the extra grip or stiffness of foot bed to carry you safely. So think about the terrain and maybe you will eventually need shoes with slightly differant characteristics.6 -
After a lot of mental turmoil and beating myself up over how hard I'm finding re-starting my running (screaming legs, inability to keep HR at a reasonable rate, worn out after a couple of miles) I've finally given in and decided to give the Jeff Galloway run-walk-run thing a go.
So since my injury in December, the most I had done (time or distance-wise) was the final 30 minute run of c25k, a 5k race that was actually 4.89km according to my app, and a 4km easy run last week which took me about 32 minutes of struggle.
This morning the training plan called for 4.8km, so I found myself a tabata timer, set it for 2 min run / 30 sec walk intervals and off I went. Did the runs at my naturally comfortable pace without worrying about forcing myself to slow down (as I'd been doing usually). The intervals seemed to be good as as soon as I started to feel puffed it beeped for a walk, and the 30 seconds were enough to catch my breath.
Despite feeling like I was 'cheating' I actually went 5km and skipped the last walk break, and my pace was around 15 seconds per km FASTER than my last slow/easy run. Plus I don't feel anywhere neaar as beaten up, I could have carried on. Will be interesting to see how my legs feel tomorrow.
So, in conclusion, I might force myself to ignore the 'cheating' feeling and give this a go. If it allows me to run without everything hurting and still at a pace I can accept it could well be the way for me to go!
March goal: 40km Done: 36.2km.13 -
@eleanorhawkins Hey that is wonderful!
@7lenny7 remind me to keep my distance behind you if we ever cross paths
@martaindale you got this! Just remember to pause your watch if you are getting close to an hour, and restart it just before you cross the finish line.

March goals: Run 100+ miles, stay healthy & keep up with marathon training plan
3/1-10 Totals: 73.7 km run, 5.6 km hiked, 1 hr yardwork
3/11-17 Totals: 48.1 km run, 3.5 km biked
3/18 - 32.2 km run
3/19 - 1 hr leisurely swim
3/20 - rest (stress headache)
3/21 - 12.9 km bike, 15.4 km run
3/22 - rest
3/23 - 7 km run (5k trail race +2k warmup/cooldown)
3/16-24 Totals: 54.6 km run, 12.9 biked
Nothing much to report as far as a race report. The weather was beautiful (ran in T-shirt and arm sleeves), I negative split the race again and got a good time as compared to my other results on this course. I suspect I may have been trying to keep up with the same guy as last month, as his pace was just right until I sped up around the 3k mark.
Seeing that nothing hurts and I'm not slowing down on the shorter distances, I think I'm on the right side of that fine line between marathon buildup and overdoing it. So far so good.7 -

ETA @juliet3455 I don’t know how I forgot about @7lenny7 , he does have an impressive shoe collection. @7lenny7 fav trail shoe?3 -
@amymoreorless I love my Salomon Speedcross 4 but not sure how the soles would do in the conditions you describe - they are a tough rubber but might get cut up. Something like a Saucony Peregrine or Brooks Cascadia with a really firm sole might hold up better. I hated the Cascadias though, they made my knees hurt. But might work well for somebody else. It might be worth it for you to buy from someplace with a really good return policy. REI will return shoes up to a year later, no questions asked. I got my speedcrosses from the REI garage sale - the previous owner said they felt like running in cleats, which is true on roads, but they aren’t meant to be a road shoe - and I think they were something like $40 for a shoe normally over a hundred.
My husband is mostly over his cold but has now given it to me. We were supposed to run a 5k race this morning, which had a nice shirt, crawfish boil, live music, etc. but I am unable to breathe through my nose and my throat is full of razors. I could probably run anyway - planning to get out for an easy run later today - but don’t want to be around other people since I am certain this is contagious, plus my heart rate is higher than usual so I have no business trying to race.

Sunny, 28 degrees F, with a brisk wind out of the northwest. Started my watch at the beginning and never looked at it again until the end, trying to run comfortably uncomfortable by feel. Not as fast as I would have liked, but not as slow as I feared, so it all worked out. Almost back to normal health wise.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K (Registered)
6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)

Yeah, I was shocked at how well price the Wunjo's were. My wife and I both use the X5 Ultra. I think @MobyCarp uses the X1 or something. I forget now.
For trail shoes, I like my Altra Lone Peak 3.5 but they are NOT cheap.
@PastorVincent Is there room in the side zipper pocket of your Wunjo for a smartphone? Mine measures 6.2" x 3.2" and need to make sure that will fit.
I just bought a hydration backpack from REI yesterday but that was $100. The Wunjo's cheaper - and they're having a Spring Sale for 25% off! If it fits my phone, I think it'll be great for hiking and longer runs. I just hope it's not uncomfortable around my chest.3 -

March running total to date – 179.80
Nominal March mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Cut back before St. Patrick’s Day weekend, run the 8K hard, use the half as a training race. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage.
Today's notes – It turned into winter again yesterday. Forecast for this morning was temp in the low 20s F, with 18 mph NW wind. I opted for a group run, because their 13 mile route had a lot of turns as opposed to the long straight stretches I'd run from home. I didn't want to deal with snow underfoot *and* running into the wind for several miles continually.
Garmin says I actually got 23° F (-5°C) with 13 mph WNW wind. The actual wind was mostly westerly, sometimes with a northerly component, sometimes with a southerly component. I wouldn't call it gusty, but the intensity was variable.
After about 5 miles, I was running with a girl I just met this morning. We had a nice chat through 13 miles; she is planning her first marathon at Wineglass next October. Then I had to find 7 solo miles. I managed that, though it was a mental challenge for the last couple of miles.
Third 20-mile run of the training cycle, done. Average pace, 8:02 per mile. Good enough to go the distance. Now the saying is, the hay is in the barn. I will not run this far in one day again until April 15.

Went to the Run Houston! Minute Maid Park 10k this morning. It's a good sized race. Big enough to attract some cheering crowds but small enough that you don't have to dodge people for the first 2 miles. It is part of a series that does 5 races throughout the year at different points of interest in the city. I may definitely consider doing the series next year now that I've seen how this one was organized.
I wanted to get under an hour. Got close, but not quite. 1:01.28. Shaved 1 min 45 sec off my time from last month for a new PR.
Typical for Houston, the course is pretty flat. You run through city streets and around Minute Maid Park, which is where the Astros play.
I went out a little too fast, got caught up with the crowd. I realized it around mile 2 and dialed it back just a hair. Started passing some of the early surge runners around mile 4 and was well on pace to get under an hour. Literally the last .75 miles is what did me in. I started feeling nauseated and could not get my legs to turn over. Not sure what happened, honestly. I ate well, had my coffee as usual, hydrated, and was reasonably dressed (maybe a tad overdressed, but not bad). I was really pushing the limits of my pace and I think it just caught up with me a few min earlier than I would have liked.
I can't be disappointed though. A new PR and a pretty decent drop in time.
3/2: 6.5 miles
3/4: 2.4 miles
3/7: 3.7 miles
3/18: 2.5 miles
3/20: 1.8 miles
3/22: 1.8 miles
3/23: 7 miles
March total: 25.7 miles
March goal: 35 miles

So if you watch in my video review:

You will see two pockets that I stick water bottles in. Sometimes I put my iPhone 7+ (in a LifeProof case, so a bit bigger than most phones) in of those and have run 20 miles with it there without any problems. My iPhone 7+ ALMOST fits in the side pockets (there is one on each side) but it would be a PITB to get in and out. The front pocket works great for that.
But it also has huge pockets in the back that you can use for shirts, jackets, and so on. Any phone would obviously fit in there if you did not need direct access to it while you run.
My phone in case is about 6.75 x 3.5 roughly. So a bit bigger than yours.1 -

@martaindale Way to get that PR on your 10K! Yes, Houston knows how to organize a race, I have always been impressed how well the marathon is run every year.
@eleanorhawkins really good that you are doing run/walk intervals. The Galloway method had been proven time after time to increase pace and lengthen distance. Keep it up and I bet you will start wondering how far it can take you.4 -
@martaindale Well done!!!0

Excellent options. Thank you!0 -
Slept in again, so wonderful. Had a banana then took the dogs for just over 4.5 miles walk, with a stop at the vet's office to check in on their weight. The both need to lose a little - just like me! It was really nice to have an hour and a half outside with them, in the sun. Now I think I'll try to convince my husband to shower and take me to lunch.5

@amymoreorless
I bought miracol on Amazon after checking with a few local ultra runners who used it. They liked it. I used it last Sunday and had no issues with it in 18 milesObviously didn't run in my jeans
Room for another water bottle. Pocket for my s9.
Side pockets and back pocket6
