10k more or less, too darned hot!
Running on the same trails where our 10k race is going to be next weekend, wanted to get through it without a break since my husband has been sick every time we ran it. Well... that did not happen today. I forgot how much I hate running in the heat! The weather seemed so beautiful, running felt so good and easy, and then two miles in we were both wiped, I was brick red, and he was talking about throwing up. 85 degrees, no breeze to speak of, high humidity. I swear I lose a minute off my pace for every ten degrees over 70. Anyway we went out way too fast, mile pace for the first two miles was 8:40 which is slightly faster than my PR pace for a 5k. But it felt so easy —seems like I might finally be over my cold, which has been making my recent runs feel harder than usual, so I have temporarily lost the knack of pacing myself by effort. My husband agrees it didn’t feel like we were going that pace. We were all good until the heat caught up with us! Three days ago the weather at night was below freezing!
We took a couple of long walk breaks, stopped to pet a buffalo, and finished the 10k course at average 11 minute pace overall. Then ran a mile back to the parking lot to make up for the distance we walked, and took a nice long walk around the pretty lake. Met a very sweet little doggy which rolled around on my foot and wanted to go home with us.
By the way the AC repair guys did finally come back yesterday - at 8 pm at night after I had given up hope of ever seeing them again. Considering the weather today they were just in time!
This is what I look like after thinking it would be okay to run in a racerback with no sunscreen, which I did day before yesterday, no problem. Spring has officially sprung.

2 Runs so far in April.
9 km on April 1st - monday evening with friends exploring some new trails. Some walking due to terrain challenges and ice.
11 km today - Double Hill Climb. I got a late start so everyone was gone when I hit the start. Turns out they changed the planned route - reversed it so I ran into them at the midway point going the opposite direction.
-5C at start with a cold 15-25km gusty NE wind. Had 4 places where you were fully exposed with no shelter which made for some very cold conditions.
Garmin gave me 393m Elevation
MapMyRun gave 351m Elevation
Strava gave me 376m Elevation.
Since the data come from a Garmin watch I tend to believe what they show. I did cross an old Railroad bridge so maybe Garmin has me dropped down to the riverbank elevation.
Was more walk than run on the climbs, just a bad case of early season - not in Hill Shape yet.
04/01 09.00 km -09.00km -131.00km - YTD 179.90km
04/06 11.00 km -20.00km -120.00km - YTD 190.90km
My YTD should be between 380 > 420km if it was a normal year. Badly beat up by January/February weather this year.
Also had 2 swim work outs this week with the "Adult Swim Club" which has turned into a virtual private coaching session since 2 couples went to Cuba for a 2 week vacation, 1 has a new job and is in the process of moving and the other regular member alternates swim sessions with his wife ( child care management ) and April is her turn. Technically she is in the group below me and the only one in that group this sesssion.
2 Athlete's & 2 coach's = Intense 1hr workouts ~ 1800 > 2500meters.9 -

I can't wait to try it out this weekend. If anyone has any tips or things I should know ahead of time let me know. I am figuring to wash/rinse it out pretty well first. It has all kinds of amazing pockets.
Oh... nice! I bought this one and tried it for the first time today. I filled the bladder with ice and it stayed cold for my whole run! It was amazing. Plus, it has lots of pockets for my phone, trail map and keys. I love new toys
That’s the hydration pack I have. I love it!4 -
Planned long run today, 2mile wu, 4 miles tempo w/90sec rest, 2mile cd. I was so ready for this mentally but apparently my legs were really tired from yesterday's run, drills and strides. Running on gravel, dirt and sand may not have been a great choice either, but kept me mostly away from all the people on the paved trail. By the time we were back on the paved trail and it should have felt easier my legs and feet were too tired to care.
I did wear my new hydration vest and loved it! The weight didn't feel too bad and I had no issues with the vest rubbing or chafing anywhere. I was worried about the water sloshing around but I couldn't feel it at all. It did make a funny sound that kept freaking me out thinking someone on a bike or a truck was coming up behind me on the dirt service road. Also the vest got pretty sweaty so now I need to figure out the best way to clean it.
I am also rethinking my training plan. I think it may be doing too much speed work for where I am with my recovery. My foot is pretty sore after yesterday and today and I really don't want to injure it again. The plan for next week has: Mon - 4 miles plus drills and strides, Wed - 2mi wu, 16x200m @ tempo with 200m walk/jog rest, 2 mi cd. Fri - 4 miles plus drills and strides, and another 8-9 miles of hills on Saturday.
I want to be ready for the HM in May but I am not expecting to be competitive or go fast and I just think this plan, while it looked good, is just too much as I am getting into it. It's called a noob plan but honestly for almost all of my HMs I really didn't even follow a plan, I did my easy runs, a tempo run and a long run each week...
Am I whimping out guys? What do you think?
Rest day thankfully tomorrow!

Race day!! Well, despite the problems the organizer had leading up to the race, things seemed to go off without hitch today. Races started exactly on time and things ran smoothly. The 10k was quite a bit longer than it was supposed to be, an even 7 miles. I'm glad I wasn't doing this for time! Ended up at 1:15:33, 53/215 overall, 21/132 females. I'm totally happy with that, especially considering I stopped a few times for pictures and was running pretty easy.
The park is really nice and the course covered trails that went around several parts of the lake. There were alligators everywhere! Luckily they were all in the water. Apparently some years there have been alligators hanging out on the banks and even up on the trails. We even got an alligator safety briefing before the start. Basically, stay away from the bitey end, don't try to jump over them and don't get between their mouth and the water. The organizer let us know he would be super bitter if one of us did something stupid and got killed by an alligator because it would mean his race would get cancelled! 🤣
Runners in general are a nice and supportive group, but trail runners even more so. I went to the race alone and so many people said hi, cheered me on, and made conversation while we were standing around. It's a really good group. Alligators!!

I finally broke down and ordered new running shoes today. Turns out the ones I am running in are almost 4 years old! Yikes! I'm getting the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 19's. My current shoes are the 15 version. I hope they are close to the same shoe. From reading posts on here, there are chances that they are drastically different. At least they have a decent return policy if they are. I also bought new tennis from New Balance. There goes my tax refund.7

No dog on run today as I was worried she wouldn't be able to concentrate for whole run. It started to rain heavily for the last 5 minutes of the run but other than that run was great. I decided to start listening to a book on my run and it helped with making the time go by.

Congrats on your race @martaindale and for not getting eaten by an alligator.
I have skimmed through posts over the last few days but haven't kept up, so sorry if I missed any races or news. i saw a snake photo and some discussion of other scary critters and plants. I've encountered coyotes a few times and a skunk but not much of the poisonous or venomous variety.

I'm hanging in there but missed a couple of days of running this week due to the craziness. Interviewing job candidates went pretty smoothly, but took up a lot of time. I ran for just a tiny run before circuit training and yoga on Wednesday. Thursday I was just too exhausted and sore to contemplate a run, and yesterday I ended up stuck at work much later than planned. I debated a short run but decided that it would do me more good just to relax a bit and get to bed early. Plus, it snowed again yesterday and then turned to cold rain. Enough already!
This morning was the first in a series of four training runs for the Mountain Goat 10 mile race, which gives you a preview of sections of the course. Today's loop included the first part of the course, which featured a pretty long uphill climb - or at least it seemed long, it was probably just over a mile of uphill grade. It wasn't as bad as I was fearing, which was a relief to more sore legs and lack of sleep. I got to run with some fun friends who kept up a steady stream of conversation, even though I barely had energy to contribute it was entertaining.
I had a delicious bagel sandwich after with a friend who introduced me to the best bagel place in town (she seems to know from bagels, and it was excellent). The rest of the day was spent at work. I made some good progress, including adding some things I wrote when I woke up at 4 am and my mind wouldn't shut up about it, so I jotted them down. Turns out they were still decent ideas even in the light of day.
Tomorrow looks to be basically a repeat of today. There is another Mountain Goat run - this time you can run to 4 different parks to become a SuperGoat (15+ miles) or two parks to become a NannyGoat (7.5 miles). I don't have time or energy to do the SuperGoat, but I'm going to try for the Nanny. Then back to work for another full day. The end is in sight. The project is due on Friday but I leave for San Diego on Wednesday so it *really* should be done by then. That would make me very happy and I will celebrate with all the margaritas and Mexican food that San Diego has to offer.
Hope everyone had great runs or races today, and good luck with any tomorrow.8 -
Dang it Gary! I almost had a clean sweep last week! So close.

Congrats on your race @martaindale!1

Another easy short gym run today. Week 1 of at least three runs a week has been accomplished!

@martaindale Awesome race, congrats!
@PastorVincent Heh! This coming week will see reduced mileage as I have a race next weekend...plenty of opportunity to seize that full sweep!6 -
@martaindale - Congratulations on your race and that the gators all stayed in the water! The medal is super cute!
@katharmonic - that is so fun that they have preview runs of the race course! It should be lovely in San Diego when you are here. Hopefully you will bring your running gear for a run along the water when you aren't in Old Town drinking all the margaritas and eating all the fresh tortillas!1 -

Oh, for sure @shanaber - I hope to get at least a short run in Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning if I can. Last time I was there I did a long run in Balboa park. That was way hillier than I anticipated! Running along the water sounds like a perfect way to de-stress, along with those margaritas. If you have any specific running route or restaurant suggestions pass them along. I'm staying in the Gaslamp quarter. I hope I can remember the little coffee and smoothie bowl place I went to last time that I loved, but I'm sure there are plenty.

Managed 20 miles this week, last time I did that was June 2017. Yesterday's run really knocked the stuffing out of me, its was sunny with clear blue skies but the wind was really strong and I kept getting winded!
Thankfully we don't have any poisonous insects or snakes, we do have lots of nettles and city folk driving large expensive SUV's on narrow county roads.

2.5 miles with section of interval sprints. Haven’t done that in a long time - thighs are burning!7

@shanaber I empty my hydration vest and take it in the shower with me. I use my pouf with some body wash and scrub it (especially where it’s the sweatiest), then hang it to dry in the shower.
The bladder I empty of any water/Gatorade then blow the line to make sure it’s clear of any water and pop it in the freezer until the next time I use it. I read that tip somewhere... it prevents the bacteria from growing in it and from getting smelly.6 -

@katharmonic The series sounds like a lot of fun! And I love a good theme! Fresh tortillas are just the best!! You can get them still warm at the grocery store here and I usually have to open it up and get one out to snack on while I finish shopping.2

Yep, the 19s don’t work well for me compared to the 18s. But I have a different situation from most people looking for a stability shoe in that there’s really not much wrong with my gait - I don’t overpronate - but I have a bad knee which needs my foot placement to be very stable. I found that the 19s made my foot roll to the outside and put pressure on my knee.
By the way congratulations on a great race! I love the medal, and the alligator photo! I keep picturing some runner trying to jump over an alligator.2 -

Well, did that. Got slower after 13km but truth be told didn't make much effort to hold pace. Now to go eat everything in sight.
I think I need some new shoes (again). The Asics I got in January are getting too hot to be comfortable.10
