Hi ladies!
I went back to the gym for the first time in months. I only walked a half mile before my hip hurt, but I gotta start somewhere. At least the treadmill is cushioned and gives nice metrics. It's been so long I forgot to take music! Of course then I came home and ate a yogurt. So I am back in the gym crowd.

Good morning dear ladies. Well we made our quick trip to Kansas. DH's sister is a fighter. We got there and hospice was there. They have her set up with a hospital bed and O2. They explained everything and are very caring. We can home yesterday as she is sleeping and sounds like she will be doing that most the time and it is only a matter of days before the toxins from no dialysis build up and she will pass. We did get to visit some when we got there and yesterday before we left she was sleeping really deep. We made the choice to come back and not just sit there and wait. She has been doing dialysis since 2000. So trying to stay busy until we get the call. We will go back for the funeral. Thanks for all the support it means a lot.
I did get my blood donated last Friday and it went really well. I had myself so worked up and it turned out okay. So will try and do that when they have the Red Cross drive here at the hospital every 3 months.
Allie--keeping figures crossed and saying a prayer that you find something soon and it will be better in every way.
Rebecca--I love writing and getting letters. I had a couple friends we wrote on the time, 2 have passed and one is
my friend who had the stroke. I do send a hand written card to each grandchild once a month.
Well it has been raining around here a lot and the flooding is starting. A friend that lives by the river called and wanted to know if she could stay with us if the river comes to the house. So planning for company. No word today yet on DSIL. The waiting is the hardest part.
Blessings, Vicki GI NE6 -
Well done Annie! The first step is the hardest.
Had a nice day with my friend. Her husband is really rather boring and takes ages to get out a thought. His wife is quick of wit and can talk like me! I just mainly talked to her, though I hope I wasn't rude.
Lunch food went well and the homemade mango and coconut ice cream was delicious! I had limes to squeeze over and a lime zest, mint and sugar dust. DH was most impressed.
We went out for a 4 mile walk along the seafront and finished the day with tea and flour less chocolate cake from our posh bakery. Heaven!
They are now safely hitched up at their campsite.
I am squeaking in under calories. Just. Thank goodness for exercise. I did all my morning session.
Going to watch another Wallander tonight.

Shingles vaccine - I’ve had both the old one and the new two series one. My Grandmother had shingles and was miserable every time she had a flair. I don’t want that so I’ll do what I can to prevent them

Lanette, when we were in Japan it was from 1985-88 ( no kids), then from 1990-94 ( eldest son was born in 1989 so 1 yr old to 4 yrs old). Middle son knew of the Navy life, and daddy out to sea. My husband retired summer of 1998, and the youngest son was born later that year. So he was the retirement gift! Yay! When my eldest had graduated from A school, we celebrated and took him out to the nudist resort, it was the 4th of July. As a surprise for son, we had told him to bring his Navy whites. My husband had bought a Chief's uniform, so as son was changing in one part of the RV, husband was as well. They met in the middle, and it was the first time my youngest had seen his father in a uniform. It was one of those moments I'll never never forget. 💖. We walked around the resort, my husband and son in their whites, getting handshakes, hugs and some cried. Nudists are very patriotic.⚓💖

well it has been an interesting day thats for sure..
went and picked up the DGD and went and walked the dogs and then fed DFIL and then took her to the park..
then came back to my house for a bit and went to lunch with some dear childhood friends of mine. Tal enjoyed it too. dropped her off at her grandfather's house and went and picked Tom up he had a drs appointment and I had one right after . he couldn't walk so they changed his meds to a steriod cream for his foot.. and spoke with the Dr about my antidepressants. will use up what I have I have both 10mg and 20mg, I will see if I need to up it at all and will call him If I feel the need..dropped Tom off Elana just getting home. so got him in the house and came back.. will go down and feed DFIL.
whomever asked it is a nursing home where he is and they have CNA's that take care of him and 2 recreation associates so basically thats all covered. but referrals i could get a dozen from all who work there.
Only good thing about tomorrow is there will be no patients nor Dr. so I can get stuff done.
after feeding DFIL in morning riding up to Glastonbury to apply for Companions and Homemakers.. hopefully i can get enough work to pay the bills and get out of the place im in

Rebecca - great photo, neat story about your Navy guys!
Love that you have penpals and write handwritten letters. I had a similar friend who would write pages and pages as well. It was almost sad when email took over for our correspondence. She passed away from breast cancer last year but I saved several of the letters she had written throughout the years. Nothing earthshattering, just what was going on in her life and she had beautiful cursive handwriting. I'd like to give a shout-out to Glenda up there with the Angels. We had never met, she was a buyer for a seafood company in Dallas, I worked for a seafood distributor in Seattle and we talked on the phone every day for years until I left that job. Then we'd call each other at home every week. We looked a lot alike... she resembled me more than my own sister.
Vicki - glad you made the trip to see your SIL. She's been fighting for a long time. I have a friend with polycystic kidney disease, went on dialysis a few years ago. She's hoping to be on a transplant list but not sure if her health will allow it, plus she's still a heavy smoker and has been for years. She's a gem too.
Hope the flooding isn't bad for you. How are the crops doing out your way? I think I mentioned my sis in Northern Indiana reports that it's been so wet and rainy, some farmers have given up even planting any crops. Talk about a stressful way to make a living.
Meg - I forgot to mention you have me WAY beat on shoes, lol. I still have plenty, most of which I'll never wear again so need to go through them. Another thing to add to the declutter list. Glad your DH is half way through. Does it seem like time has gone quickly for you without him there?
Katla - good luck finding shoes. My favorite walking shoes had been leather Keen - Presidio style. Waterproof, not cushy at all. With the orthotics, they are too small to wear for a period of time but I'm keeping them for winter strolls in the rain. Podiatrist switched me to Hoka One-One with rounded toe, definitely cushier. Haven't worn them yet as I'm quite happy with the New Balance I had been wearing, the orthotics fit great. They are cushy which I need now. Shoes are getting so expensive. I got the Hoka's at REI which have a generous one year return policy... even if they've been worn for months. Decide you don't like them, take them back. I have a lifetime membership there, cost $20.
Heather - your mango/coconut ice cream and the flourless chocolate cake sounded yummy. I bet your friends had a great time.... I have known guys like that and felt it was my task to keep prompting them for an answer, lol. Tiring. Is this normal for him? Glad the gal was chatty, makes time go by faster. You have the perfect place for a 4 mile walk!
Whizzed up a couple big handfuls of fresh basil with a couple cloves of fresh garlic and olive oil in the Nutribullet (I don't have a food processor). WOW that is zingy, I drizzled some into the soup I had for lunch. Happy to say my sinuses have cleared up.

Terri - I really wish the guy would get the teleporter back to me. I want to take a ride on your boat! . The teleporter.... how hard can it be to replace a flux capacitor? I have a feeling the mechanic took it off for a test drive and I'll never see it again, lol.
Make it a great day, ladies!

2 quotes I came upon in my reading today. Got my 3 miles of walking in, upstairs window trim all painted and I'm planning a lovely dinner of roasted golden beet salad with feta and oregano, corn on the cob and peri peri chicken on the grill.
DD comes home from her first day as a mother's helper, it will surely give her a whole new perspective of what hard work it is to keep a 4 yo and a 6 yo happy and occupied.

Pip and Kirby: Party on, birthday boy and beautiful wife.
Allie: A fabulous, fulfilling new job for you is near the top of my prayer list. Keep putting the word out. You are looking to enter a field that is desperate for workers. I would also advertise your services on Nextdoor.com.
NYKAREN: My mouth started to water reading about your planned dinner tonight.
Injury update: The right ankle is great. The left ankle is okay. The broken left pinkie toe is still sore. I can really feel the site of the injury whenever I do the ankle physical therapy exercises. Sooo, doc has left it to me to adjust my range of motion exercises to what is tolerable for the left toe. No point in rehabing one body part just to aggravate another existing injury. I'm still in the stiff boot, but slowly transitioning to a workout shoe while walking inside. Next appointment is in 4 weeks, but I have full latitude to cancel if I feel like the fracture is better.
Our bathtub conversion will begin in a month from today. I have my handyman Reuben lined up to do all the work that will be needed to finish the sink faucet, countertop, cabinets and lighting. Now, it's up to me to (a) decide what I really want; and (b) get all the parts lined up. I love interior design, and can spend hours collecting ideas. However, I do have champagne taste on a beer budget, so compromises ahead. Yesterday I found a slim, LED dimmable overhead light which is also a fan. The older DH gets, the more he wants lights, lights and more lights, so this is a good start.
Stay well. Love you all.

My mother had shingles so I got the first shot. Had shingles twice after that. Found out later that first shot was never intended to prevent shingles only the post-herpetic nerve pain that can sometimes follow it. Have since gotten the new vaccine which is actually meant to prevent it so here's hoping it works and I don't get them again.
Went with DD on Sunday to see "Wicked". Really enjoyed it. It was a great production.

Went to the water class today. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jari Love’s Slim and Lean DVD
Lisa – the only thing I can add to your post is that we all respect each other.
Kirby – happy birthday
KJ – there was this one lady I wanted to unfollow but I couldn’t figure out how to do it so I finally unfriended her. Some of the things she was posting were so out of it, that I couldn’t be bothered to even read them. There were more things that I would like to see but her c*** was taking up so much room. We had a lady talking about the Shingrix vaccine to the Newcomers. The vaccine you got as a kid becomes more and more ineffective the older you get. We got the Shingrix. It comes in two shots and you have to get them something like a minimum of 3 months apart (I forget the exact number, I could be wrong about the “3” part). Now it is in high demand, we were on multiple waiting lists. Neither Vince nor I had any after effects
I have very few “friends” on Facebook. I very seldom post anything. I just like to try to keep abreast of the kids and a few other people. Actually, Facebook was how Eileen, Rita and I reconnected. That’s probably one of the few good things about that
As I was leaving the gym today, this one gal had a birthday cake. Oh..why didn’t I just “walk on by”. She’s 65. Boy, I would never say it to her, but she looks more like 70+. All wrinkly. I’m about to turn 65. I don’t look like that. But on the bright side…I had a VERY small piece, like 4 bites and threw the rest away
Vicki – (((HUGS))))
Put Grumpy in to be fired at ceramics tonight and worked on Sneezy. I really need to get started on the turtle Pete asked me to make him. I say he wants a turtle, Vince said he wants a tortoise. I need to confirm what exactly it is that he wants. He said he wanted it painted like a real turtle. Personally, I think that's boring. His shell will be green, his body green. Well, I'll make the shell using two different shades of green. How boring to have everything green. But that's what he wants

Good question!!
I have 5 more courses to go.
I'm taking one this semester (Semester 2) which starts next week.
I would like to take one in the spring/summer session but I'm having trouble finding a suitable course. I need to check it again to see if they've added any. I keep pestering them ... they're probably tired of hearing from me begging for a decent course to be run then.
Then I've got two courses which I have to take which involve creating a project, I think. They'll be in Semester 1 and 2 next year. They're supposed to be taken right near the end. I could have gone two ways with this Masters: Research or Coursework. I opted for Coursework, but I think these two courses are a way of getting the Coursework people to dabble in Research.
And then I hope to be able to find a suitable course in the next spring/summer session.
So ideally, I'd like to be done by Christmas 2020 ... but we'll see. It will depend on those spring/summer sessions and will depend on how heavy those two research/project courses are.
In many ways I wish I could take a spring course and a summer course right away and be done October 2020, but so far, there isn't much potential for that unless they decide to offer something intriguing in Business or Health or similar in the summer.

Lisa - I have always wanted to see a firefly – it sounds so amazing.
Rebecca – you looked great in the pictures with grand baby!
Heather – You look amazing! I am not sure what Mom looked like but there is often some family similarity’s
Well I caught up! I ended up reading 34 pages tonight… didn’t get anything else done. Things are really busy here, I’ve added the 5 hours a week at the camp writing grants so that plus the gardening is 15 hours a week 8 other hours with private gardening clients and 30+ hours of my own business – and commuting and …. So when I set it down in writing I understand why I feel like I am busy all the time. It has been a company time too… I had 2 nights of overnight company last week (and I fed them) and two more nights this upcoming week (I’m figuring out meals for them too). My brother is really beginning to slip, I think maybe he was holding on for Kyle (his son) to graduate and to get set up at University. Having him really show how sick he is - is tough on Mom as she was living in denial and this is making the fact that he is dying more real for her. I feel bad for her, but also understand that in some ways this will be a relief.

shingles @KJLaMore I had never heard of shingles vaccine so just googled it here (in France) it says "recommended in France since 2014 for people ages 65-74 to reduce occurrence of shingles but also to reduce the severity and amount of pain if one does get shingles." I have two acquaintances who got shingles, one just over 50 and the other quite young- in her 30s. About 2 years ago, upon coming back from 2 weeks of hiking and during a stressful professional period, my doctor sais she was certain that the bumps on my back were shingles. I never had pain, just itching and great fatigue. I would have wondered if the doctor was wrong but she has a good reputation and doesn't tend to say she's certain when she is not.2

I'm not feeling good today, mood-wise.
I had breakfast yesterday and went over in calories. I think the weekly average is ok. I wanted to have a light breakfast today, but was out of some breakfast stuff so had a piece of GF quiche loraine.
Yesterday I started to work on my thesis again after a break (I took a break between sending info to teacher on June 17th and getting her feedback on July 5). I can't make sense of what my thesis director writes. she's super-critical, condescending and not very clear and helpful (with the odd minor exception). Today I'm feeling like it's gonna be impossible to make it through with her. It's actually probably useful for me to have the thesis. Some of my colleagues are having trouble getting jobs because they don't have a thesis, which didn't used to be required in my field but now is more and more expected.
Last week she said if it doesn't work out, it's "divorce", and spoke of a rare case where a student didn't get her thesis and failed at the thesis defense. it's worrisome that she bring this up, on the same day she speaks of "divorce" between director and student.
I have heard feedback that she speaks negatively about me. that's bad. they are supposed to support us, in our career, not make it more difficult. it's problematic for such a long term relationship and investment of time and energy. I wanted to change early on but was discouraged from doing so. I had another thesis director previously and it went well with her, but she changed schools (far away) and we all had to change teachers if we didn't want to change schools.
Life feels unmanageable. My home is untidy, I have some unpaid bills, have a hard time getting around to doing stuff. if I spend the day taking care of little stuff I can't progress on thesis. if I work on thesis, everything else gets pushed to the wayside... of course there can be balance...I just feel so discouraged all around;
It seems like a rather disastrous situation and I'm not sure if I can find a new thesis director at this point.
One of my colleagues, who didn't get a full time job after 15 years of adjunct work at half-time (and lower pay), says he's going to stop everything. He has said that to many people. Many understand that he is quitting. When I ask further it's clear that he is talking about committing suicide. He has been staying with friends for the past year, and is 57 and has little retirement money. He says he plans to sell his furniture (has a lot of antique furniture that belonged to his mom) and give the money to his son. He says it would be worse for his adult son that he live and decline and not be able to fend for himself. We had a general plan to meet on Tuesday but not a specific time and place. He didn't answer anymore. I tried contacting him a few times, but we are not very close, and I have no reasonable way of insisting. He was to be staying with a colleague until at least today.
There is a reorganisation of higher education in France at present. They are making federations of different schools, and the hiring laws have changed recently and will continue to change. the recruitment and promotion process is completely new. some colleagues are in great difficulty as, despite their excellant work, they didn't get the tenured job. repeatedly I hear that there is some betrayal, some settling of scores, some power plays (committees getting allies hired and making sure non-allies are not hired/promoted) even in the case of two adorable and very gentle and very competent and involved people. In one example a young outside person was given full professor position and long-term all around more experienced, great employees didn't get full professor positions. It didn't make sense. One is going to contest the recruitment process as apparently there was some irregularity.
I went for acupuncture yesterday for the 1st time in a year. I spoke briefly of weird employer to the acupuncturist. he said I should quit and give private classes. He doesn't realise that it's almost impossible to make a minimal living on private classes. I find it annoying when very well-intentioned people tell you you should quit and get another job, without any knowledge of the job market. I had a falling out with a close friend about that. She is married to a thermal engineer who makes an excellant living. She works on and off and quits when she gets annoyed with an employer and can take half time, low-paying jobs if she wants to. After her umpteenth suggestion that I quit (comparing me to herself), I told her that we don't have the same financial situation, and it's not so easy for a 55 year old person to quit and find a new viable job, which made her furious. She thought I thought of her as some rich, out-of-touch suburban housewife. She's not that rich, but has no financial worries, suburban or not makes no difference to me, and I guess she is out of touch with the reality of situations more precarious than hers.
If I could easily get another comparable job I would. but in fact, I'm like an adjunct teacher with adjunct pay, but with job security. After 6 years of employment it's difficult for them to fire you here. Private classes pay less, no job security, I'd have to regularly hustle to get customers, who can stop or cancel at any moment.
I'll go for a walk and clean a bit and do an errand and work on thesis anyway. usually going for a walk helps a bit.6 -
Hooray! Two good things happened today!
Firstly the plumber turned up on time to change the thermostat. The one that was there when we moved in was 15 years old and incomprehensible. He was such a charming young man. He realised the one he had brought with him wasn't suitable so went out to the suppliers to get another. Put it in, explained it all very patiently (!) to us old folks, and only charged us £80 for labour. The thermostat was a good one, so not cheap. We were super pleased with his fee and what a personable young man. He will get a good review on Checkatrade.
I think we can understand how to work it!!!!
We have been so lucky in Hove with finding workmen. At our last house they were much more expensive and not so attractive! I did like my boiler maintenance man there though. As I did in London when I lived there. They must be a special species!
The second good thing was that our box of wine arrived. Phew, what a bother that was! DH has been following it up and complaining like a trooper and it arrived this morning.
So double hoorays today!
We kept up our exercises through all this. The hot water tank and electrics are in the exercise room cupboard, so the nice young man was in and out while we were going for it! I had put a bit more clothing on than I usually wear!
Might run this pm, but it is quite muggy so might just row indoors.
Two normal days, then DH is off to the cricket for another four days in a row. Oh well.
