Lisa: I’ve never seen a cicada before. Thanks for sharing the photo. I will be happy enough to have seen yours, and don’t have any desire to find one at my house. :noway:
(((Rebecca))) Sorry that your family had tummy troubles. :flowerforyou:
Terri: I’ll keep an eye out for the Tardis. I'd love to go on an adventure with them if I could come home at the end of the trip.
Natbug: Welcome to a great group!
SueBDew in TX: 103 degree heat would wipe me out. I hope you have air-conditioning and can hide inside until things are more comfortable outdoors. :flowerforyou:
DH’s PT session today went very well. I was pleased that a suggestion from me was followed. I asked that he lie on his back with his knees bent and tighten his tummy muscles to press the small of his back down. I’ve learned this in yoga classes. The therapist went with it and both he and DH seemed to think it was helpful.

Lisa I think cicada's are interesting bugs. They only come out every 17 years. We had more of them in Missouri than up here in Minnesota. After they molt you find something that looks like a transparent bumblebee. You don't get to see the bug you presented very often. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Gals,
Shingles – thanks for the reminder! My insurance won’t even talk about it until you are 60 and I forgot to ask…. I’ll email my provider and see what the co-pay is.. I looked into it when I turned 50 and it was about $600 without insurance, that’s more than I have in savings…so I passed. My insurance has a deductible of $7,000 per year (for those out of the USA that means the first $7000 I have to pay before insurance kicks in) but there are a few things that they label “preventive” so the insurance is activated even if I don’t reach the deductible (which I have never met). It feels very random on what is preventive and what is not… so flu shot yes; TB test no, pap and mammogram yes, colonoscopy no…. I’ve learned never assume, ask in email and if the answer is the one I want; HOLD on to the email. LOL
Bananas (Julie?) - I know you live in France are you from the US? England? Australia? New Zealand? Your written English is flawless so I am guessing you are a native English speaker. That being said would it be worth checking in to transferring to your native country for a year to finish your education and then going back? I am sure this is a case of me not understanding, but I can not imagine the level of frustration and stress you must be under.
Janetr - So cute to hear the house must be sparkling for your daughter to come home, my mom tells the story of me coming home from college for the first time (about 6 weeks after I left – just for the weekend) My mom moved beds cleaned windows, molding, had the carpets shampooed until my father finally said “ it’s your teen age daughter ! NOT the Queen of England!!!
Heather – what a great joy to get that package. I love the idea, and might write it into my requests for when I am gone.
Lisa, and Katla – I too have never seen a cicada and while never wish to see one in my home they are interesting… I think if I just glanced I would think it was a cockroach…. Which are ucky!
Margaret – I have heard the 17 year thing about cicada before so is it that every year a few come out but each individual cicada hibernates for 17 years? Or someone who is 16 years old could see the first one they had ever seen in their 17th year? Do the hibernating cicada count the years? Or is it something about temperature, dampness etc… and it just averages out to 17 years… OK reading back on this list of questions, I am asking you to do a research project - LOL… I can google it.

The 70-year-old mother-in-law of my partner's son died this morning. She was chronically ill, but the decline was unexpected.
We were not at all close, no condolences necessary, but we are all sad that Jean did not get to hold Baby Lilliana, due in October.
The family has decided to have the remains transported from Mississippi to New Orleans for the funeral. They left NOLA during Katrina, & only one family member moved back...but now they are all descending on NOLA just in time for Tropical Storm Barry. And my daughter-in-law is pregnant...and there is going to be flooding so probably no burial will be possible...and they are Catholic, so it's less likely the remains will be cremated...I sure hope it all works out. Time to try some "positive affirmation".

Yay! Went to the YM to teach water exercise and there were so few people that I didn't have to be on deck to teach and could get in the water with them. Can't do that when it is a large class. It was fun but probably won't happen often. County came by and mowed the shoulder of the road out front. Now I need to get out there and weed wack to cut back growth on the driveway.
I will be glad to get rid of the extra dogs at my house next Tuesday. I need more sleep and 3 dogs and a cat are too many animals in the bedroom. The shitzu snores and I swear I came in the bedroom from the bath and he sounded just like my DH. It startled me for a second. The doodles are just young and rambunctious.
Food is going well today.
Lisa - Sounds like Egg is a good hunter. By the way thanks for the tip on the "door buddy" It has been a lifesaver this week for us with the extra dogs and DD's kittens.
Heather - Those are lovely momentos of your friend.
Allie - I volunteer at the YM and had to fill out about 15 page application and have a backround check.
Pip - You always seem like you are really enjoying your life.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA

Karen in VA: I am so sorry about your family’s loss. I hope your partner’s son is doing okay with the situation. :flowerforyou:
I’ve been following the weather news and noticed that there seems to be a storm building in the Gulf. I hope that all of our friends in that area are okay. My son’s good friend moved to Louisiana with his family several years ago. That makes it seem more personal to me. I hope they and others are not harmed by the storm that seems to be building in the Gulf.

I had a good day. I had enough calories for a bit of ice cream, but I was low on protein so I ate almonds instead. I find that treats don't satisfy as much as hitting my protein and fiber goals. This app is teaching me to get more nutrients per calorie consumed. Yay!5

Allie - This is said with only love and caring, but can I recommend that you carefully proof for spelling the paper work you fill out, there are a couple of words you often mis-spell here and there is nothing worst than undermining ones best efforts by having a glaring (to those who can spell) spelling error... It came to mind as Saturday is one of those you often put an e where the u is... (an e makes more sense to me too... but the dictionary says u). I did an application when I was looking and had 2 spelling errors, I didn't get the job and when I followed up on it they said that was the reason the hiring manager would not even consider me. Lesson learned!.. I use spell check and read everything backwards -(start from the end and read to the beginning) if it is something that is critical. MFP is not critical - so please don't take this with any hurt, it is typed with love.

I'm not sure if it's a good thing for me to join anything. Still, here I am.
I turned 50 in January. I felt good about it. Then I stared to notice it was harder to get out of bed. It was harder to walk, in fact, it was challenging to do anything. Sure, there are other issues. But most glaringly is being significantly over-weight. I have to believe that losing weight (80-100 pounds) will help me feel far less ancient.
So far, I have lost 15 pounds without much difficultly. I've been on myfitnesspal for less than a month and in May I did the whole 30 and loved it. I have come to realize that I cannot eat how I did in my 30s. Oh to have learned that in my 40s. So I have changed my eating habits to lean proteins and fresh fruits and veg. The exercise is slow going. I used to exercise faithfully but have been ill the past several years. For now, at least, I do yoga and meditate and occasionally and with great regret, I do an aerobics class.
I hope that within the next few years, I will be able to say; "I am more fit and capable now than I was in my 40s."

Michelle- Pete wants you to paint him a turtle! It doesn't have to be boring green! So many turtles are stunning! Look up the Eastern Box Turtle, or a Red Eared Slider, or a Painted Turtle! Send Pete some pics! And if he still decides on green...take a look at the Wood Turtles. They are green but have beautiful green patterns. MY favorite, however, is the Eastern Box Turtle. Look at this gorgeous guy a friend of mine got a picture of! He is having escargot for lunch!

KJ- that is a gorgeous turtle looks like a lawn statue instead of a real living creature! I’d love a ceramic one!

Did Jari Love’s Slim and Lean DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do the All My Best DVD, which is a new one for me so we shall see how it goes.
Bananas – I’ve been reading with great interest your “saga” about the education field in France and what’s happening now. My son teaches English on the Island of Reunion. I wonder if this is the same way over there?
Heather – what a lovely thing for Ros’s friend to do for everyone
Welcome everyone new!
KJ – Personally, I’d want a turtle that has character, is different (colorful) but I suspect Pete wants a boring old green turtle. That’s the most common. But I was thinking of making the scales on his shell two different shades of green. Jess is in Virginia so I think I’ll place the order for the bisq turtle and have her pick it up. I think if I give him choices in colors, he’ll just get overwhelmed. If I were to show him pictures of different turtles, there are certain things that I just don’t have access to (for example, an air brush) and he’d be disappointed if the turtle doesn’t look exactly like the picture. In ceramics you have to accept that things aren’t going to be exactly like the picture. That took me a while to accept. Also, I will probably ask the gal at ceramics to make the red on the side for a red-eared slider. At least that’ll be SOME color. I wanted to give it red toenails, just to give it color. He said he wanted color. But then he said he wanted it the color of a turtle.
Had a bad storm earlier today. We lost power, but only for a few hours. It was funny, I walked into the closet and out of habit I went to turn on the light….lol Fortunately, the storm didn’t last long at all.
Went to lunch with the Newcomers. Went mainly because I suggested this place. It seems that people really liked it. Had a grilled chicken wrap with broccoli instead of fries. I had to return it twice to get exactly what I wanted, but I suspect some of that was because we were such a large group and the chef wanted to get the food out all at the same time.
Sue in WA – I always prefer the water instructor to be in the water. One of our instructors is in the water regardless of how many people are in the class. The other instructor almost never goes in the water and when she does, she’s just in the shallow end (the class is in the deep end) and she’s just in to get cooled off and then she’s out of the water.

KIM LOL about the cicadas...I love the sound of them. A favorite childhood lazy-summer-night-sound. I can answer a few of your questions. Some are 13 year, some 17 year, but the births are staggered. The 17-year ones actually do emerge from the soil every 17 years. It's just that there is a new class of graduates every year, so it's different 17-year locusts this year than last year. Some years there are a lot more than others. Also, there are actually some annual locusts as well, so...1

I love summer crickets the noise is a sound that reminds me of summer nights on vacation at my grandma's in Riverside (southern california) - Riverside is a pretty name, but not a pretty town LOL however grandmas was the best.

Hi ladies!
I had fillings done today. As I've mentioned, I have a lot of anxiety at the dentist (and most doctor's appts), so they were able to do "oral sedation". Basically, I went in, drank down some medicated mixture and took a gravol, sat for an hour until I was good and sedated (while they took my blood pressure and pulse/O2 a few times), and then they did the fillings in about 2.5 hours while I was all gaga. It went really well. I am still pretty dopey and it's about 10 hours later. That was much better than previous dental appointments! And I had a really great nap when I got home.
Everything else is going ok. I lost some more weight and that feels great.
Vince (my partner) is doing better with his ankle sprain. He goes into physio tomorrow, hopefully will get his next set of exercises. He's not very patient with physio. Last time he went twice. He's pretty sure he's only going twice again! We did buy some crutches online, so at least he'll have them for next time.
Oh, we had a mourning dove that only has one foot. I spent a lot of time watching him/her. It uses it's wings sometimes like crutches. I hope it does ok. It's shown up almost every day for about a week and spends a lot of time on our deck. We have a lot of mourning doves around, so I assume it has a mate.
Well, I am super sleepy so I guess I'll go to bed again.

I agree with Kim. And as a Ph.D. in English who has taught writing for decades, and as a horrible speller, I recommend Richard Cohen's Washington Post essay from 1992, Spelling Hell, written after Dan Quale's potato(e) mistake. The upshot is that spelling well has nothing to do with intelligence, but that doesn't stop people from making judgments about us if we are poor (or careless) spellers. So, I am a horrible (and sometimes careless) speller, but I am a good proofreader. Kim's suggestion to read from the end of the document is spot on. I also proofread by reading out loud to myself.
On my phone, so I'll stop there.
Do look up Cohen's article. It's a classic, and one of my favs.

I love the crickets and “tree frogs” on a summer night. So loud tonight I can hear them with the windows shut. I wish it was cool so I could open the windows.
The cicadas - when my daughter was almost 6 she was enthralled by all things “buggy”. She collected cicada shells all summer. We had bags of them. She would go walking with me and search the tree trunks for them. We had several dead bugs that I had to preserve and mount so she could keep them. I was OK with that, but I drew the line when she wanted the opossum skeleton.
My mom has had a rough week. A fall Saturday and a trip to the ER for dehydration Monday. She seemed really good tonight. My nephew and I were entertaining her and having a super fun time singing Bohemian Rhapsody.
Still crazy hot, but better than 2 nights ago when the heat index was still 95 at midnight. We’re not supposed to make it to 90 tomorrow, but rain is on the way from Tropical Storm Barry. Stay safe if you are near the gulf!!

I might have to look up that essay.
I'm also an atrocious speller if left to my own devices ... but a pretty good proof reader. And I also proof read by reading out loud. I catch so many mistakes that way!
Spell checking is a wonderful thing! I keep wondering why my fellow student ... and instructors ... don't use it more often.

Felicia - Looked it up. Great fun! Thanks. I think, over here, that spelling, while important, is not quite such an obsession. (See George Bernard Shaw on the subject ) Though I am appalled by the low level of grammar at the BBC. My DH and I sit there nit picking every night. A sure sign we are getting old. I'm still a stickler for 'fewer' and 'less'. Plus many, many other things that annoy us intensely. Our biggest hatred is 'iconic'. It is used everywhere and, usually, wrongly.
