I ended up needing to call emergency services Saturday morning due to severe abdominal pain that didn't go away after a few hours. I hate hospitals, I'm one of those people that have to be half dead before seeing a doctor, and I hated being transported in an ambulance, but I didn't know what else to do. I felt like my stomach was being chewed on from the inside out. Expected an alien to come chewing out at any moment. I had no other symptoms, just pain. Anyway, after several tests and scans they didn't find anything wrong with me, but the first two rounds of pain meds didn't help much. Around the 10th hour the pain suddenly got worse and they gave me another dose of some "strong" pain medicine that I have never heard of. That one seems to have done the trick but they decided to keep me overnight. So I got no running done this weekend. I was so weak yesterday from dealing with the stress and pain, and today after leaving the hospital, I've been trying to drink lots of liquids and walking around to get the meds out of my system. So....I am not going to meet my running goal for the month. Just going to focus on doing what I need to so I can run my half on Thursday.
Hopefully there’s nothing really wrong and this will never bother you again, but just in case I would hate for something to happen to you because I failed to mention it! Feel better soon, and good luck with your half.
Omg, that's not scary or anything . The calf pain came from my son who was playing ninja and wasn't being mean but really wanted to show me his "skills". He grabbed my left leg from behind forcing me to balance on my right leg and he struck my calf repeatedly with his bony little elbow. I had a couple of knots from that and it felt pretty messed up. Then two days later I banged the same spot on a sharp corner (bad luck). I used Arnica and heperin gel. Do you think this could still be a blood clot knowing the stem of the calf pain? They did a CT scan and they did see something there, but I think they said it was just stool. The problem was, when the nurse or doctor came in to tell me the results of the CT, was at the same moment when I was retching or had just retched from the pain medicine. Because all this was related in German and the bad timing I can't recall exactly what they said. I had an ultrasound earlier and she said she saw liquid in my stomach but that the CT should clarify it. So thanks for the suggestion. I will keep an eye on how things are going. This is just crazy. I ain't got time for this!3 -
@eleanorhawkins aww, now how about I ship you some of the swag? Don’t let me forget come January and I’ll get it to you. And/ Or you can give me your t shirt size and I’ll order ya one or medal if you prefer. I think with this years package we’re already in the November streak thing... I tried to ignore the emails too, but they were so well put together and the dealings I’ve had with them were like dealing with old pals. So, I caved. It’ll give me something to look forward too, I hope.
Preface jitters? Nah, girl you got this. It’s just a run with other runners. Play it smart, listen to your body, rest regularly and have a treat now and then. Don’t start any new training, no speed work or terrain changes, stick to your tried and true shoes. You got this. You’re trained for this. Your strong. You’re a runner. Say it again... YOU ARE A RUNNER... ya again. Say it until you believe it!
@Elise4270 💜💜 love you! I am a run-walk-runner, I do believe it! The plan is in place and I've made the decision to stop trying to lose the couple of pounds I want to until after the race, my body deserves sufficient fuel to do it right.2 -

I’m also very familiar with sudden abdominal pain, going to the ER and being told there’s nothing wrong, given massive drips of morphine and sent home! In my case what was wrong was an ovarian torsion caused by a large (fortunately benign) tumor which ended up having to come out after it caused necrosis of the ovary. ER doctors aren’t always the best diagnosticians, you have to advocate for yourself (or if you are retching or otherwise unable, bring someone to advocate for you) and not let them blow you off.
Here’s hoping it really was gas, or stress, or otherwise passing and minor.

Wow, that's awful. A similar thing happened to my niece when she was only 10 years old. How scary.
I had bad experience with Doctors when I was 22. I was told that a suddenly appearing and rapidly growing tumor was a benign cyst. Well I had doctor google and my symptomology did not line up with their diagnosis, but they refused to listen (I didn't mention dr. google, I just said your diagnosis does not match my symptoms). I requested a second opinion and they scheduled it three months after the first doctor's opinion. In that time the tumor went from the size of a water balloon to the size of a basketball. Even on the day that I walked into my second appointment, the doctor initially refused to examine me. She told me to get out of the exam room, get dressed, marched me into her office and proceeded to scold me about how I should respect the first doctor and that there was nothing they could do about my benign cyst. She only examined me after I burst into tears telling her I had had kidney pain for weeks because of how huge the tumor and pressure had gotten. Then there I was on the table with her screaming at me, "WHY DIDN'T YOU COME IN SOONER!!!" Anyway, the whole ordeal was so traumatic. It was a malignant ovarian tumor and I did learn how to be an advocate for myself from this experience, but unfortunately, here in Germany I've become a little mouse and I have a very hard time finding my voice because I'm so insecure about the language. The doctors and nurses were all very kind and helpful. My German husband couldn't come with me to the hospital because my younger son was at home with a fever and was basically hallucinating. Bad weekend! So yes, I could have asked them to repeat what they said, I think I did actually, but in that moment I was just really having a hard time processing. It was kind of like a tunnel vision blurry moment. The next morning I did have my husband call the nurses station to clarify when I would be discharged and that helped.
Thanks, I also hope it was nothing, but the information about the blood clots really helps. I would have never even considered something like that.6 -
Congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend!
@Camaramandy648 - Please don't push yourself too so hard that you feel like you are going to puke. It is unnecessary and you honestly could hurt yourself and not be able to run. It is normal and definitely ok to be slow/slower than other runners (it is likely there will always be someone slower and someone faster than you). As you continue to run and your body adjusts to running, you can start to add more distance and the speed will come naturally. After a while you will be at a place to start doing some speedwork but it will still not include pushing yourself to run so hard you feel like puking. The biggest mistake most all new runners (and returning runners) make is to try to go too far too fast.
@LoveyChar - Welcome! The October challenge has been set up by @Elise4270 and anyone can join!
@143tobe - hope it wasn't anything serious, stays away and doesn't come back!
@elise4270 - I really want to join the RTY challenge but I was surprised the cost had gone up so much even for the basic. Actually I want to do the November Hug a Runner but they don't have it available yet and I can't tell if it is actually part of the overall offer now.
Also I love the idea of putting some quotes on the first page of the monthly Challenge for @MobyCarp and @KeepRunningFatboy. My vote for a @MobyCarp quote is 'you can't out run your fork'.
I haven't run much while we have been in NJ. I knew there wouldn't be a place to run outside and I hate the gym treadmill. Other than today, we have been walking a ton so I don't feel too bad. Maybe I will get in that gym in the morning. I won't be able to on Tuesday and we fly back that day after driving down to Maryland to visit our rental there. When we get home though I need to jump right back into training for my next HM at the end of November.

Well, my plan was to end off September with a 9.4 mile run this morning, but yesterday afternoon I was feeling antsy, so my husband suggest I go on my long run then and we go out to dinner afterwards, so that's what I did!
The route I'd planned is one I have only run once, and that was last year. Theoretically it should have been easy - from my house I ran down along the shores of lake number one, cut across around the back of lake number two, then follow a creek until it joins the Mississippi River, then follow the river for another mile. Theoretically no problem, but the creek and the parkway that follows it is very windy, and the trails cross back and forth and are inconsistently maintained and closed in a couple spots for maintenance. I did fairly well until I reached a spot where the creek meets two lakes, one to the north and one to the south, and managed to get myself way turned around until I pulled out my phone and figured out where I was. I should see if I can set a compass app on my watch.
The first five miles went by pretty smoothly at a 12/minute mile pace, then the last few got tough. I took a lot of walking breaks, but I'd forgotten to cut my toenails and there's one on my right foot that rubs on longer runs if I'm not careful. I decided to cut it a little short after getting lost the last time since the sun was setting and I didn't really want to run in the dark. My husband and I have our phones set to track each other so he was able to pick me up nice and easy.
We had a good dinner, several drinks, and then slept in this morning, so that was lovely. Today my legs are sore, especially around the right knee and left glutei, but good sore. I'm really going to need to take it easy at the 10K next Saturday if I want to not die during the 10 mile on Sunday, but I think I can manage it.
September Total: 40.52 miles
September Goals: Run 50 miles, lift minimum 2x/week, 15 minutes/day of moderate cardio, 15 minutes/day of mobility.
I didn't make my 50 mile goal due to losing a week being sick, but I ran my 2019 half marathon and it didn't kill me, and ended off with my third highest mileage month of the year. I'd love to see October, November, and December beat that, but what happens happens.
Somehow this turned out to be my lowest month of the year for moderate cardio, but so it goes. I've still been biking a decent bit so that's good. I'm not sure how much longer the city bikes will be out - I should check that. Yoga was still low, though I did a bit more than last month if I can get some in today and tomorrow, and with the way my butt feels, I'm going to be mad at myself if I don't. Lifting was pretty good - I made it in at least twice every week except the week I was sick.8 -
September goal: 110 miles
9/1: 8.86 miles
9/3: 6.31 miles
9/4: 6.25 miles
9/5: 6.25 miles
9/8: 10.55 miles

9/19: 6.25 miles
9/22: 10.05 miles
9/24: 6.08 miles
9/25: 5.52 miles
9/26: 6.22 miles
9/29: 8.02 miles
122.18/110 miles completed
I ran 8.02 miles this morning. I started out a little slow but as I ran I settled into a decent pace. I'm running a 5K on Saturday so I am making this week a cutback week. I know that you don't really need a taper for a 5k, but I still want to have fresh legs so I'm planning on taking it kind of easy this week. Today's run puts me at 112.18 for the month. Tomorrow will be a rest day so I guess that wraps up September for me. Hopefully fall will show up in October. See you all in the October thread!
Congrats on your races @alphahowls, @ContraryMaryMary, and @eleanorhawkins and anyone else I may have missed!

I did some trail running this morning - a running friend is starting a chapter of Trail Sisters so I went out for the inaugural run. It was a fun trail, but very rocky and technical so required a lot of walking/hiking. The group did about 3 miles, and then some people had to leave. This park has a long set of stone stairs down to a lower trail around a small pond/lake and my trainer has encouraged us to Spartan train by going up and down those stairs as many times as possible (with a weighted vest, which I did not do), so I thought while I was right there I better do it. Two women gamely came with me and completed one time down and back up. I did a second one by myself and then decided I really wanted to get to 5 miles for the run instead of torturing myself on the stairs again. I took the less tricky trails around the outer edge of the park and finished up, and I was able to pick up the pace quite a bit on these easier trails. I think this is going to be a fun group so I hope it takes off and builds up a good number of people.
Congrats to those who raced this weekend! @ContraryMaryMary and @eleanorhawkins, great job!
Good work everyone who made their goals. Kudos to those who revised goals to take care of themselves, or accomplished new things, or celebrated milestones.
Hope that all is well for those who are injured or sick - @143tobe, sounds very scary. Hope you figure it out and/or no more pain!
I may have one more run in September yet, so I'll be back to check in here and see how everyone else closed out the month. Catch you in October too!

5.84 slow miles today. I was not feeling great and it was very hot again. After yesterday's terrible run, this doesn't help at all. Tomorrow is a rest day.

No run today, but I did post a video review of the Trekz so I am going to count that as 20 miles6

Well this weekend was awful. So I went to visit my parents on Wednesday. My cat has a sore left hind leg she's been favoring since Friday so we are going to the vet tomorrow. She eats, plays a little, purrs, poops, and pees, but hobbles a little and can't jump on the furniture and counter like she normally does. I feel like a horrible cat Mom and wished I had taken her in on Saturday.
My run on Friday was cut short due to super high temps and humidity made the heat index hover around 98. I started to feel a bit funny despite taking multiple walk breaks so I called it quits early. I went out later with my Mom for a 4 mile walk. Today's run went fine because I waited until almost sunset. I live in the SE and these temps are f-ing ridiculous. I think it has been 90+ every day this September.

Quick little run around the neighbourhood after work. I was meant to go this morning, but with daylight savings starting my usual 5am alarm was really 4am and that just wasn't happening today.
@ContraryMaryMary Awesome job on the half, that's a great pace for a relaxed run!
@eleanorhawkins Way to go on your race, it sounds like a really fun race to be part of
@143tobe I really hope they can figure out what's wrong soon and it's nothing serious *hugs*

Anyone need a training journal? It reminded me of @MobyCarp with its Boston blue.
Believe
Also, RTY/RTE has a promo started for next year. Many of you know that we formed teams and beasted on the miles this year... might have been a little too easy with 5 person teams... if you are interested in a team I’m sure there will be some. If I’m upright, I’ll participate. And I can rook dh in to it too. Or you can do the challenges on your own, if you have the mileage like @AlphaHowls @garygse @PastorVincent, @Scott6255 @polskagirl01 @kristinegift (hi), and the rest of you bad mamajammas 😄
Both the Believe folks and RTE ship outside of the US. I found shipping reasonable. (Ish)
Now go run for me.
ETA I signed up. I encourage you to have a look at it if you don’t do races and only want to participate in virtual runs, or maybe your coming back form a 4th hip surgery.... This promo package is all the races you need all year. I bought the whole shebang and and it was 62.99 with us shipping. I think the cheapest route, no swag is 25 (regular price). And the promo price expires oct 1st midnight... then I think it goes up 80 bucks.
Doc better be right that I’ll be cleared to start running January or February...
I kinda feel like I don't belong on that list, haha but now you've got me thinking about that run the year thing. I don't know, the price isn't too bad (well, I didn't check shipping yet) and I could probably aim for 1000 miles at least. My average is 100/month. Hmmmmm.
Finished September with exactly 100 miles, but am gonna take it easy this week. Had a minor procedure on Friday, jogged 4k today and was okay but technically I should probably just be careful for a few days. Better safe than sorry!
I love October, and I've got some fun races coming up this month! Looking forward to it!
September goal 100 miles
Upcoming races:
Oct. 19 - CityTrail trail 5k (#1 of 6 in the series)
Oct. 26 - Botanical Autumn 5k
Oct. 27 - Lublin Half Marathon7 -
So I ended up only running 10km in Korea. The trails up Hallasan were closed because of a tropical storm on the first two days, then for one extra day as they checked and drained everything. By then we were going to leave. I did get in a short trail through the countryside, the locals called them Olle Trails and they are pretty awesome.
Then I ran some intervals last week, bringing my monthly total to about 50km. The air quality has been pretty *kitten* since then, but we are approaching National Holiday and I get a week off. I'm spending it with the girlfriend and almost-in-laws at the seaside, probably eating buckets of crab.13 -
Despite the hot and humid weather ON THE LAST DAY OF SEPTEMBER this run felt pretty good. Felt myself relax and loosen up after about 3 miles, and negative split each of the 7 miles. Let's go October....bring the fall weather already!!

When I was adding up my monthly miles this morning I failed to count the 1 mile bootcamp pre-test run on 9/9 and thought I was less than a mile short of goal. Shew. Glad I looked back up at my list and saw it! Goal made!
@alphahowls – Congratulations! Hope your leg is less cranky today!
@eleanorhawkins – Congratulations on your race! It would have been very easy for you to use an excuse not to go but you did it! Kudos to you!
@ContraryMaryMary – Great job on you half marathon!
@zeesparrow – Are you in Montana? I heard they got hit with snow over the weekend. I’m ready for cooler temps but not that cool!
@Tramboman – Congratulations on your race-a-versy!
