I kicked the Nerf soccer ball in the yard for the snake charmer.
@Elise4270 I have no idea what this means but comments like this are why I love you!
Haha! Watch the video. My cat got snake bit twice. I don’t know if you were around or on hiatus. He’s also Mr Butterfly, because he love to eat them.0 -
@durhammfp You'll contribute more than you know. This group loves questions. You have any? Maybe gear, shoes, favorite ghosts, ideal distance, screw shoes...food... anything?
To add to this... we're pretty running focused this week, but we also veer off sideways. It's a bit like channel surfing on TV... there's a lot of movement and some of it is weird and wonderful. Whatever you do, don't get them onto the topic of hotdogs! I've also remember something to do with smoking some sort of meat jerky or something....Commitments for November:
1) Run at least 36 miles
2) Walk at least 36 miles
3) Finish the last 2 weeks of Active's C25K program
4) Finish the first 2 weeks of Active's 5K to 10K program
Date......Walk......Run
11/01.....6.11.......2.21
11/02.....2.72.......0.00
11/03.....4.20.......2.58
11/04.....2.71.......0.00
With this group I feel like I'm at a really cool party with nothing to talk about, being just a newbie still. I do have a race on the schedule, though. My first 5K will be on Dec 7. By that time I should have something to contribute... maybe? :-)
@durhammfp your value to this group has ZERO to do with your mileage or your experience. I know how it feels. I came here several years ago as a total newbie as well.
Every runner, regardless of their current level started at the same place. You can't compare your chapter 1 with someone else's chapter 20.
I look forward to hearing about that 5k after you're done!
^^^so much this. I was completely in awe of everyone in this group when I first found it. They were all running crazy distances at crazy speeds and I was like "ok but I jogged 5 minutes without stopping". Yet, they all applaud everyone's efforts no matter what level they're at. The support from this group has got me through races, injury, self doubt.11 -

Thank you for the tips @rheddmobile @PastorVincent and @ContraryMaryMary
I took a snack bar on one of my 10 ks though I like the jelly bean idea and it sounds the perfect excuse to scoff a few Jelly Bellys which are my fave. As I haven't been back jogging long after a 25 year absence I haven't really established a pattern.
This also means I don't have a race pace. Every jog is the same pace or about the same and it is whatever my body tells me is right which tends to be 10 minutes per mile though I slow to 11 minutes after about 10k. My training plan has 'easy' and 'speed-test' so far, the difference between the two was a massive 6 seconds per mile.
For now I just want to get the mileage under my belt. I keep going a bit further to see if my body complains either during or after the jog and having done a couple of 12k distances so far so good. If I feel like I can't make a distance I will walk whatever is needed.
It is really odd having been a reasonable runner in my teens, then up to class 2 obese for many years, finding what I am capable of is a complete mystery right now.10 -
Quick question I found running 10k has caused me to have a skin tag any suggestions for stoppign this from happening?1

This community is full of awesomeness!
Still being super new to MFP community I am learning the ropes by reading, liking and loving your inspiring posts which are rapid and real! Love the fast pace of this community which is helping to rekindle the flame of the sport I love- Running.
So here goes my attempt to join the conversation. I hope to post more once I get more acclimated😇
November Goals
11/16 Complete VCU RVA Half Marathon
No time goal but only to Finish Strong
My running distance goals are still a work in progress as I’m hitting high mileages weekly but remembering from times past I would push myself too hard and increase volume and distance too quickly then get injured. Thus my goals are to just move mindfully daily while knowing my body is capable of so much more!
My stats from last week is up 3.59 miles at 39.90 miles. Can I say this will continue? I sure hope so lol.
There are several races for 2020 which I am slated for and lead for my organization.
For now I have the spring races on my radar. The one that is top of mind is the Shamrock Marathon which is the race I trained so hard for Boston many years ago. However, due to medical reasons and doctors orders I had to pass. Thus my 2020 Shamrock goal is to finish strong.
Thanks again Athletes for all the awesome inspiring posts to follow along and be motivated to become a better runner.

@Teresa502 sounds like a beautiful race to take part in! Bears and ponies are great to see in the wild, and closing the road off to traffic is very cool. Wish we had races like that here. Congrats on the pr as well!
@PastorVincent Oh I believe you about the lubricant! I know my boyfriend would as well, he's just a little immature! I hope you find your bottle, very annoying.
@durhammfp me too! But I just post when I can and learn so much from everyone else, so it's worth it for me. Good luck in your race!
I have a question which I'd love a few experts to weigh in on. I really want a gps watch as I don't like running with my phone, and my phone will measure the same route as up to 300m different on different days, so I really don't trust it. However, I think most gps watches are really ugly. I don't want a square one, and my wrist is small, so I need a relatively small one. I think I will wear it most of the time, as otherwise I will forget it, so I need to like how it looks, which means I want it to look like a traditional analogue watch except when I'm running. I really like the withings watches, but they aren't gps, only HR, with gps through your phone, so useless for me. I m tempted by the new garmin vivoactive 4s, which I think you've got, @avidkeo? Any feedback on it? Anyone else got something they could recommend? I know I'm being super picky!4 -

I have the Garmin Forerunner 935, which is one of the most expensive top of the line ones you can get (or was when I bought it) - I, of course, got it on sale for way cheaper than it costs, but that aside... it can do everything you list. There are analog faces for it and it looks like a normal watch. I would suspect any of the Garmin Forerunners would work for you really. At least from the 200 series up.
I HIGHLY SUGGEST you go to a store like Best Buy, Dicks Sporting Goods, or the like and physically seen and touch the watches if you can. Some are a lot bigger than they seem online. My 935 is HUGE on my wife's wrist but looks normal on mine.
Also, if you know a specific modle you are interested in drop by:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com
and read up on the watch. He has very detailed reviews on them. For example, here is the new Garmin 245:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/04/garmin-forerunner-245-music-gps-watch-in-depth-review.html
(which is a great middle of the pack option from what I hear, but not sure on how big it is)
And the Vivo Active 4:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/09/garmins-vivoactive-4-series-everything-you-need-to-know.html
With Google buying Fitbit, I would not jump on one of those watches right now. Google has a solid reputation for killing products, so I would take a wait and see on any Fitbit purchases right now.
Finally, Black Friday is comming and Garmin always seems to run big sales for it. Plan ahead, but I would wait for Black Friday before buying anything.5 -
@somum – Have you done the Richmond half before? My second full marathon (and PR) was there and I’ve also done the half marathon. One of my favorite race venues! The crowd support is super.
Thanks @JMNagain, @rheddmobile, @martaindale, @7lenny7, @Scott6255, @kirstymn, @TheMrWobbly, @PastorVincent for the kudos on my 10-mile race and course PR and to everyone who pressed the “like” button!
@TheMrWobbly – for my 10-mile race I had a Cliff bar for breakfast about an hour and a half before the race and then I fueled with a gu around the 6.5 mile mark. I typically run fasted during the week because I run before work and no time to let food digest but that is usually only 5 miles. I’ve found for my long runs on the weekend (10 – 14 miles), I need something to get me through those last few miles.
@Elise4270 – I can see why your baby bear took on the snakes. That ball is huge but he isn’t intimidated at all! He’s a cutie!
@rheddmobile – I didn’t know they had any wild ponies either. I’ve never seen them down there before. There’s another state park about an hour from my house (Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia) that is known for all the wild ponies roaming around and they also have bears in those mountains so I guess they manage somehow.

I really like the withings watches, but they aren't gps
I m tempted by the new garmin vivoactive 4s,
Anyone else got something they could recommend?
I started with my lovely Withings Steel HR, then moved to a Vivoactive 3, and then a Garmin 645 Music.
If you genuinely want to run, figure out how to get a Garmin that you like. All the other aspects of the Garmin ecosystem make it invaluable.
How about getting a used VA3 ... ($50?) for several months, to work it all out, the reward yourself for something with a new one. Functionally the newest one, 245, really has hit a sweet spot of value and ability.
Appearance is left to you to decide.
The "Fenix" come in S/M/L sizes...

I have a small-medium wrist. I currently have the vivoactive 3 and fenix 5s (it's the smaller version). I like them both for different reasons. The vivoactive 3 is a great watch. I just wanted to upgrade to one that had more workout options. We do a lot of hiking and the vivoactive doesn't have a separate hike option. The fenix does seem a tad bit bigger overall than the vivoactive but it's heavier. Vivoactive is touch screen. Fenix is buttons. I do miss the touchscreen for a few things. But as @PastorVincent said, try to go check them out. Especially if you aren't sure what you want.1 -
Quick question I found running 10k has caused me to have a skin tag any suggestions for stoppign this from happening?
Hmm. I don’t know that it caused it, probably just caused you to notice it. But some body glide or the likes will help. Otherwise just have the skin tags removed. I had to have a mole removed that was just under my bra strap.2 -

Haha! Made ya think.
You can screw your shoes for traction in the ice rather than buying something like yak-trax. They are like spikes for the ice. A similar concept to track spikes.
That cat is the charmer, but he is to much of a do-do to heed the rattle of a snake. Ghost? Uh.. it was just spooky Halloween. You had no ghosts or ghouls?4 -

@durhammfp Screw shoes allow you to run more safely on slick, icy routes. I use them from time to time, but mostly towards the end of winter when the thaw/refreeze cycle creates havoc on the trails

@Elise4270 yes, that must have been during one of my summer AWOL moments. It looks like you're read for a game of kickball!2 -
In for 150 miles! It might be a stretch because I'll loose a weekend to pheasant hunting.
Thanks, @shanaber !
I'm changing my goal. I decided with all the racing I've done I need to back off a bit so I'm taking this week off to recover, even though I feel like I could get right back into it. Last night I got Kody out for his run by riding my bike with him.
This guarantees I won't hit my goal for 2019, but that's just a number. I really don't want to get injured by pushing it.
So, my new, smarter goal for November is 130 miles.

Ok will see if any pop up when I do my 10k this weekend. As long as the weather holds I hate English weather!!2 -
11-1 7k slow
11-2 7k slow
11-3 8k for @MobyCarp
11-4 7k easy
11-5 yoga
November Total: 29k
November Goal: 135k
January Total: 131k
February Total: 159.5k
March Total: 183k
April Total: 126k
May Total: 128k
June Total: 161.5k
July Total: 151k
August Total: 133k
September Total: 135k
October Total: 115k
2019 Total through October: 1,423k / 882.26m
Monthly average: 142.3k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races. Completed 8-31
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k. Nope...
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen - Completed 9-28
I could probably video myself doing yoga and sell the video to Comedy Central for a boatload of money.
The routine I use is a stretch for the legs, hips, and lower back (where I'm notoriously tight) and the first session is always a lesson on how much I've tightened up since my last yoga session.
Maybe I should become a snowbird and use golfing in Florida as an excuse not to do yoga.
2020 goals:
Continue a 5k regimen.
Train better.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K - 31:34 chip time; 31/77 overall; second male 65 and older (no official category)
7-27 Solon Home Days 5K - 31:11 chip time; 95/141 overall; 4/6 age group (male)
8-31 Race for Freedom 5k - 31:39 chip time; 32:00 Garmin time; Third Place male 60 and older
9-14 Gift of Life 5k - off the schedule; insufficient recovery time
10-13 Haunted Hustle 5k - 31:22 chip time; 47/74 overall; First Place male 60 and older10 -
A foggy 5k, felt fast given the level of effort (this is all relative) but my watch made me turn an extra corner and 100m up the subsequent road more than usual before I got the buzz on my wrist.
I think its probably just payback from a watch that knows I have spent the last couple of days being suspicious about the distance on my 10k on saturday.
November goals (all ish)
1. 15 runs.......................2
3. 100km........................15km
4. Long 10km.................10km
5. 100% Morning runs...2/2

@PastorVincent thanks for the reviews, I'll have a good read. Unfortunately I can't go to a store until Christmas, the only ones actually in shops here are fitbits (I think they're ugly plus I agree with you about google) and full smart watches by Samsung or apple and the like. Running tech is not big in Romania! I'll have a look at the forerunners though, they sound perfect.
@ChrisInCal I'll have a look at the smaller fenixs, really hard to gauge size from the photos. Same problem with the second-hand idea, there's not a big market here, do not much in the way of second hand. Shipping it from elsewhere would double the cost...
@RunsOnEspresso thanks! You make the vivoactive sound more like my thing I think, but I'll look at both.
I need me some of those screw-shoes but not yet, a balmy 23 degrees C here today!

I ran a touch over 3.5 miles this morning. The temp was just below freezing (29F) but next to no wind so it felt pretty nice, actually. I used a buff doubled over itself as a hat, both a short and long sleeved shirt, gloves and tights which worked well. My face was a little cold after the first mile but was fine when I was done. The dogs got musher's secret on their paws which might help Kira ... that and the fact that it was starting to get a bit lighter during her run. I really think she's afraid of things in the dark. Smart girl.
@Elise4270 Ohhh Halloween! Give me a few days and apparently I completely forget stuff. We had one super cute toddler ghoul who almost dropped his pumpkin candy bucket in an effort to very gently and carefully select one dum dum (sucker). His mom saved the bucket from spilling on the doorstep and he got the candy he wanted (as well as a handful from me) We only had 21 trick-or-treaters this year which was just enough for my husband to announce that he is willing to decorate again next year. He loves Halloween and I think if we got 2 he'd still be willing.4 -
November Goal: 80 Miles
11/3: 11.02 miles
11/5: 6.55 miles
17.57/80 miles completed
I ran 6.55 miles this morning. It was a really nice run! It was a little cooler than I expected so I wasn't sure what to wear. I went with capri tights, t-shirt and sleeves with gloves and a headband/ear warmer. I would have been ok in the shorts and tank I was originally going to wear, but I was ok with what I had on. I did take the sleeves off after a couple of miles and was glad for the capris since they have pockets that I could put the sleeves in. I took the gloves off at about 5 miles, but put them back on again after about a block. It is always hard for me to figure out what to wear when the weather gets cool. In the heat it is easy to know what to wear.
It was a really enjoyable run. It was dark when I started out but since we "fell back" this weekend it was starting to get light before I got home which was nice. They also had a "fall back" 42% off sale on Noxgear so I finally ordered a vest. I'm pretty excited to try it out.
I did finally read through all of the post from the last few days. I'm just going to have to give a blanket "great job!" to all who raced because I don't want to miss anyone. There were lots of great races and PRs and pictures of cool looking places to run!
Happy belated birthday to @polskagirl01 and @katharmonic!
@rheddmobile I love the picture with the cardinal. We always have a pair of cardinals, but I've never been able to hold one in my hands.
Welcome to all the new members of the group! This is a great group and it doesn't matter if you've been running for years or for a few weeks. Everyone has something to contribute and the diversity of this group is one of the best things about it. It's really a great community of runners helping and encouraging each other. I know I've learned a lot from everyone on here. I don't always comment as much as I'd like, but I always read the post and give lots of "likes" and "hugs".
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - Cancelled due to weather
10/5/19: Old Rip 5K - PR 27:27, 1st AG
11/9/19: Wags and Whiskers 5K
2020 races:
5/16/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon7 -
So, I plan to finally run my first marathon in January. That's been my big goal for the past several years and life kept getting in the way.
I've been trying to determine what my goal should be after I finally cross the marathon off my list. I feel stuck. Like I love long runs (16 miles is a favorite) but marathon training takes a lot of time. I'd love to get faster but I don't know if it's something I want to really focus on. I'm torn on my next goal.9 -

Watch size and look was a huge factor for me when choosing my Garmin. I have tiny wrists but fairly big hands and most GPS watches look ridiculously enormous on me. I chose the Fenix 5S because it was relatively small, attractive and does everything I need it to. It looks like an analogue when I’m not running.

Yes, I may want to do more marathons. I haven't ruled that out. Mostly I don't know what I want haha3
