I've been trying to determine what my goal should be after I finally cross the marathon off my list. I feel stuck. Like I love long runs (16 miles is a favorite) but marathon training takes a lot of time. I'd love to get faster but I don't know if it's something I want to really focus on. I'm torn on my next goal.
Obviously, start training for Ultras. Longer, faster, higher baby!
Or be like me and try to run all the marathons. You said this is your first marathon, not your last.
Yes, I may want to do more marathons. I haven't ruled that out. Mostly I don't know what I want haha
After recovering from your marathon, parlay all that training into trail race training. Spend a month running your long runs each week on hilly trails then find a 25K trail race which also has longer races available*. That way you get a good sense of an ultra without the commitment of an ultra. Knowing nothing about your marathon or a 25K you might pick, I'm going to generalize and say that a 25K trail race is more or less on par with a road marathon for effort.
Or go straight to ultra.
* I say this because if you pick a race where the 25K distance is the longest, you might not get quite the same experience. You want to see the full ultra crowd, atmosphere, and most importantly, the ultra aid stations and be with the experienced ultra runners as they for 50K and beyond.4 -

I'm looking at a trail half in December. Haven't signed up for it yet. I keep putting it off.
I used to think I wanted to try an ultra but with my struggles just to do a marathon I'm not sure anymore. Plus I always worry about food. I can't take chances with random food2 -
Well, I'm officially old. I strained my neck stretching in bed yesterday morning. I still can't turn my head fully to the right or look straight up. It's ridiculous.17

@PastorVincent thanks for the reviews, I'll have a good read. Unfortunately I can't go to a store until Christmas, the only ones actually in shops here are fitbits (I think they're ugly plus I agree with you about google) and full smart watches by Samsung or apple and the like. Running tech is not big in Romania! I'll have a look at the forerunners though, they sound perfect. Not sure about the size for you, though.

@JMNagain not really a fan of analog, but Garmin does have a STAR TREK face so that makes up for any other shortcomings, IMO:

I have determined that I want to get better at the marathon distance, before/IF I move up. Marathon training is a huge commitment anyway, but my current speed means it takes me longer than most of the other people who are using the same training plan. I also ran/hiked an ultra course on my own (not on race day) and determined that I wouldn't've made the cutoff. I'm sure others are more generous and there are definitely easier courses out there, but it's still a crazy number of hours. So I'm trying to be intentional with my speedwork and overall consistency and we'll see how it goes.
I did run today. Migraine yesterday, somewhat better today AND I got my SAD-lamp out finally (should've started using it last week when we changed our clocks here; the darkness has hit me hard). So I ran to a hill just over 1km away (convenient warmup/cooldown distance) and ran up 4x @5k pace, with recovery/litter-pickup on the way back down. My little buddy came along on his bike, biked the hill twice and then headed back home10 -
Aiming for 85k for November and (what feels like) that much swimming as well #triathlongoals!11

You know what we haven't had recently? Shoe pics!
I recently brought my current favorite trail racing shoes (Salomon Sense Max 2) back to the local running store. After 7 months and 217 miles the upper was starting to rip. I could have pushed them further but since I've only used these for long races, I didn't want to chance a blowout mid-race.
They replaced them with a much brighter color! While I like the blue for running, I'd prefer the black because they wouldn't be as obnoxious when I use them for every day use after retiring them from running.

At first I thought it was still on Daylight Savings Time.1 -
Today I got to run 1.66 miles to the gym. It was cold and hard but worth it.
November Total: 3.31 miles
November Goals: Run 50 miles, lift 2-3x/week, 15 minutes/day of moderate cardio, 15 minutes/day of mobility.7 -
Speaking of running shoes I ordered a pair of brooks adrenaline 19. My 18’s are feeling like they’ve got a bit flat on inside. Supposed to arrive next week6

Anybody use tumeric? Thoughts?1

Yah, that's not really my thing. I'm definitely a solitary runner and enjoy my runs because I don't have to be "on" and deal with people.6 -
Camaramandy648 wrote: »Anybody use tumeric? Thoughts?
I have lupus and type 2 diabetes, both of which are supposed to benefit from turmeric. I used it in a sort of ketchup form as a condiment for cottage cheese for breakfast for about six months. My numbers improved during that time; however, they stayed good after the turmeric was discontinued. I also didn’t have any lupus flares during that time, but again, could be coincidence. It definitely didn’t do me any harm, wasn’t expensive, and doesn’t have a strong flavor. I use a lot of it in Indian food. I found it was too much trouble for the effort I was putting into it.
If you do use it, dissolve it in oil with black pepper for maximum bioavailability. It’s oil soluble and there’s some compound in pepper which I can’t remember the name of which increases bioavailability by like 3000 percent or something. I read one study which followed the use of a concentrate of the compound they thought was the important one in turmeric and got no results, so beware of taking supplements which claim to be an extract of whatever whatever, no one knows at this point where the benefits, such as they are, are coming from exactly.4 -

Really yummy in pumpkin soup! Otherwise, I feel it's a bit of a fad and it stains your fingers and bench top!5 -

@ChrisInCal I'll have a look at the smaller fenixs, really hard to gauge size from the photos. Same problem with the second-hand idea, there's not a big market here, do not much in the way of second hand. Shipping it from elsewhere would double the cost...
@RunsOnEspresso thanks! You make the vivoactive sound more like my thing I think, but I'll look at both.
I need me some of those screw-shoes but not yet, a balmy 23 degrees C here today!
Watch size and look was a huge factor for me when choosing my Garmin. I have tiny wrists but fairly big hands and most GPS watches look ridiculously enormous on me. I chose the Fenix 5S because it was relatively small, attractive and does everything I need it to. It looks like an analogue when I’m not running.
Ohh I like your Garmin!

Those are some bright shoes!
It is getting close to the time for me to consider getting new shoes myself. Not sure what I will get. I might just blindly reorder what I have been wearing, but thinking with winter coming I might replace my trail shoes first and run in them since they do better in snow/ice than street shoes do. If I do that I need to figure out if I want to stay with my Altra's or try something new. So many decisions. Maybe I will just put it off a few hundred more miles.0 -

@elise4270 - love the video of your boobeary snake charmer!
@Camaramandy648 - I take turmeric daily (with biopirene - the black pepper ingredient @rheddmobile mentioned) and I cook with it. I have problems with inflammation that used to make me hurt all over to the touch and that is pretty much a nonissue now. I guess it really depends on what you want it for though.
Shoes!! @7lenny7, I love that bright blue and have a pair about that color too. I just hate when they get so dirty looking and the bright colors seem to look the worst!
I did get that new pair of the latest Topo Athletics ST-3s (in black). I think I posted a picture of them late last month. I pretty much love them like I did the ST-2s but there is an overlay that hits on my big toe joint and gets sore after a while so I probably will only wear then for shorter runs.
I got in a short run this morning before heading to the gym for strength training. The run was actually pretty great but my GI issues are not gone and I was feeling pretty queasy. So I had chicken soup for lunch and will have it for dinner too as nothing else sounds good. I am hoping it is a bug and that I will feel better tomorrow and can get another good run in. They are saying we are going to get hot again (90F) and I would really like to enjoy these few days of cooler weather. Honestly I am hoping our entire winter is not going to be hot like it was a couple of years ago.

Oh oh... something that might be in my wheelhouse. I am not a scientist but I have played one on the radio... ;-)
The thing in black pepper you are referencing is piperine, and yes, a lot of people believe it increases the bioavailability of curcumin, a chemical found in turmeric. There are conflicting studies, however, about what all this means. Here's a study that suggests piperine may decrease the antidiabetic effects of curcumin.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4254914/
But here is a study that suggests piperine may enhance curcumin's "significant beneficial effect against CP-induced cardiotoxicity".
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5351241/
The reason I worry about turmeric is that I witnessed a close relative die of Alzheimer's... actually, that experience led me to losing 40 pounds, to start running, and to stop eating so much highly-processed food. After 6 months, all my biomarkers are greatly improved. I add turmeric and black pepper to my yogurt every morning. Will it do anything? Who knows. Is it a little too woo-woo? Maybe, but I decided I really do like my little recipe and imagonna eat it anyway.
Oh...I ran today!
