Man, this weather coming next week...
There’s a race Saturday morning which I really wanted to do but it’s my husband’s birthday and he wants to sleep in. He’s with me in this running stuff to a point, but while I specifically wanted to get 5.1 miles on my 51st birthday, he specifically wants to take his birthday as a rest day. Oh well.
Anyway, skipping Saturday puts us running on Sunday - Tuesday - Thursday during what the news is calling “the polar blast.” Actual temps down to 16 degrees, windchill not above 18 all day. Excuse me? This is the mid-South, that’s January weather! The first of October was 100 degrees! I don’t like running in cold weather at all, but last year I gradually got used to it. This year, we never got any nice running temperatures, just punishingly hot then rain then straight into freezing!
I got all my gear stolen a month ago, and so far I’ve replaced the hot weather accessories and the chill weather accessories, but I don’t have any below freezing accessories yet! I need to get some warmer gloves and a warmer buff, my only buff at the moment is a summer weight UV half buff. I looked on Amazon and as seems to be happening a lot with my favorite things that got stolen, the ear band I used to have isn’t made anymore. It was black with heat reflective foil on the inside, and I can find similar ones, but they all have seams in weird places, and mine had no seam. My head sweats a lot and my ears freeze easily, so this headband was one of the few things I’ve found that stayed dry and warm.
Rant off. Just had to vent to people who would understand my frustration!8 -

I’m not really a cold weather person. I’m kind of an island person (half Portuguese) so running in 27 degrees F didn’t seem appealing EVER but I geared up and did it! It really wasn’t that bad and I was beeming with pride because I keep doing things I didn’t think I could or ever would! There were even points where I was consciously telling my legs, “you have more to give! You are not as tired as you think! You got this!” And eventually, it really was pretty doable! I enjoyed it so much!
Saturday in my program I’ll have to run for a longer stretch (it’s actually only eight minutes, just so you can see where I’m at in training this time around) and I am pretty nervous about it. I think the fear is the worst part. Not being able to breathe or not being able to do it and the disappointment that comes with that.
But then I think..... I’ve already done so many things I was afraid of. What if i CAN run for eight minutes straight?
So I’m really looking forward to Saturday because of that and also the lifting and long trail run after.
Also I found a local thirty mile ultra in the spring with no entrance fees. I probably won’t do 30 but maybe the little ten mile run they have the same day

My work schedule combined with kind of miserable weather and being tired from other workouts/activities have been doing me in. I'm feeling a bit in a slump, or maybe just needing a break. I have a half marathon this weekend and I am just not feeling it. I'll probably slog through it unless the weather is complete crap, but it's not something I really want to do right now. It's a local race with a big showing from our run club, and there's an awesome jacket - which is why I signed up for this ages ago.
It's so easy to get caught up in the mileage game especially when we see everyone else racking up the numbers. It's ok to take a break and back off. You are doing so many other activities that are keeping you healthy and fit. That's the bottom line. What really counts. I hope you can shake your dread of this weekend's HM and get it done - enjoy the scenery and time spent with friends - and of course the jacket!
Thanks so much @Teresa502. You have always such supportive and kind comments. It's so true that it's easy to get caught up in the miles. I'm trying to be okay with cutting back right now to have fun doing other things, not worrying about the totals. I went rock climbing tonight and it was a great stress reliever and change of pace.

I did get in a little treadmill run today as well. Happy to have this week behind me and hoping that the weekend will feel long and relaxing (as unlikely as that may be).
Thanks to all for the encouragement and good wishes on the half on Sunday. I picked up the jacket and it is indeed awesome! I'm still not looking forward to running it but I'm hoping that I might be able to run with and encourage some people - I know a bunch who are going for their first half so I'd love to be able to help if they are slow enough for me8 -
I have a cold. I am taking cold ezze, suggested by my doctor. It seems to be helping. Anyway, because of not being at my best and the article I read this morning from @PastorVincent , I decided to run slowly and keep my HR at or below that recommended in the article. Well, that was a complete fail. I ran on the treadmill and did the run/walk @ 4.5mph for 4 minutes, walk @3.9 mph for 1 minute and repeat. While I felt like it was a very easy run, my HR still maxed out at 155 and stayed in the 150's most of the running time. I don't think I can run any slower than that. I can walk at 4 mph - probably faster. Anyway, it was an easy run and with the warm up and cool down walks, I did 4 miles. Not too bad for a sick person. LOL9
-
@rheddmobile That sucks about your gear! We're about to get lows in the teens but I haven't heard anything about wind chills.
So this morning was mid20s F - I don't remember exact temp and wind chill now - and I ran 2 miles and walked 1 as warm up/ cool down. Does anyone else still sweat ridiculously in below freezing temps? I think a quarter mile in to my run my face and hands broke out in sweat. I only wore regular cheap tights, and a paper thin shirt with a cheap jacket. Lol. I skipped gloves and didn't have the best hat on either. Nothing like skin that feels cold to the touch and damp with sweat.
I also walked my dogs later when it was up to 38. I wore jeans and a sweater with gloves and a hat and ended up pulling off the accessories because I felt like I was going to have a heat stroke Am I okay?!
Then tonight i dropped a 2lb glass jar candle on my big toe so i may not be running again for awhile. We shall see. I made dinner and all and was walking on it. Then I iced it just for good measure and now it hurts just sitting around and is turning bruised.11 -

So, umm, my trainer has talked me into going for a BQ in 2020. I am still not sure she is not on drugs to think I can get there, but golly, I am not getting any younger. Might as well try, right? Worst that could happen is I fall in a hole and can not pull myself out and have to stay there for the rest of my life like some clown with red balloons. Right? Shrugs, does not sound so bad...17

I wanted to do 4-5 miles today but I got in 3.2. I was getting shin splints. Checked my shoe mileage 430 recorded so probably a little more from walking around races, warm-ups, cools downs, etc. So now I'm down to 3 pairs. LOL This is why I ordered a replacement pair when I was getting close to 400.

IF YOU ARE IN THE MARKET FOR A GARMIN THE FORERUNNER IS ON SALE FOR $150 ON AMAZON.COM RIGHT NOW
Garmin Forerunner 235, GPS Running Watch, Black/Gray
Its last year's model, but still a great watch and if I had the money right now I would pick one or 2 up at that price to keep as spares or give away to needy runners. Sadly I need tires for my Jeep, so I will have to pass on this.5 -
November Goal: 285km
01/11: 3.26
03/11: 21.15
04/11: 6.52
05/11: 13.53
06/11: 6.58
08/11: 13.05
09/11: 27.62
Total KM run: 91.71
Today was a great run. I stuck to my fuel plan of 2 x GU - one at 8-9km and another at 18-19km and a sipped powerade and water throughout. I managed a very consistent pace and had enough left at the end to go for a fast finish. It just goes to show how well I can run if I fuel properly, have good weather and am feeling healthy overall. I also think the fact that I've reined in the junk food that I went nuts on last week and gone back to my regular, mostly healthy eating is helpful. I've got my biggest mileage week coming up next week, so hopefully I can carry this good running through!11 -
Sigh first week is over and I've only done 15k. Just lost mojo again. I seem to go strong for 1 week, then off for a week. Was a rough week with 2 nights on call that were exhausting. I basically had 4hrs sleep in a 48hr period... That happened Monday then again Thursday, so literally have had no mojo. I slept 11.5hrs last night to make up for it haha!
So tomorrow I'm going for a long run, aiming for 8k. I've got a few running friendly shifts this week, 1500 - 2300, then have 4 days call in a row Thurs - sat. Should be interesting.
In other news, the old running shoes that I use as walking shoes have got a hole in the toe! My plan is to use old running shoes for work shoes, but didn't expect them to wear out this fast! Hmmmm shoe shopping again? My existing runners should have another 3 months life at least!11 -

Wow you all are talking about so much cold weather and snow even and it was 92F here today and supposed to be equally hot tomorrow. Ugh! It is November and is not supposed to be this hot!
I did run... it was around 80 when I was out. I had pain in my knee so took it easier than the pace run on the plan. It felt ok after the 1st couple of miles and the run actually turned out better than expected at the beginning. On the way home I saw a man watering his flowers and asked if he would please spray me down. I am sure he thought I was nuts but it felt so good!
I am guessing I did too much at strength training on Thursday afternoon, followed up with my PT exercises to strengthen and support the knee, and made it angry. Interestingly it didn't hurt when I was walking which is the opposite of what it has been doing. I am going to tape it for my long run on Sunday and see if that helps.

I tried going for a run. English weather decided it didn’t want me to! Slipping every other step just warming up never mind running!! Think I need some of those spike things 😂9 -
Not the best day to have signed up for a race. I must remember it is for those who gave so much so we have our lives today.
11 -
10km long run, my word its cold. Properly cold, I really need some gloves. Went from roads, to the local park, back to roads never really feeling settled. Walk/run intervals all over the placrle as a result.
Eventually decided to make one more turn and 7k-9k was all down hill which made me feel better, but left me a 1k back up the hill and pretty far from home.

1109-10.3k total 36.2k goal-100k
Run club training this morning. It was... interesting. We got an Ironman coach to show us some moves to run faster, then ran two 5k loops with pacers. I knew the second faster loop I'd need to run on my own since there was no hope of keeping up with any of the groups, but I thought the pace of the slowest pacer for the first loop was doable.
He said "around 6 min pace" when we left. Apparently that means "anything slower than 5:40" because we ran 6:02, 5:45, 5:52, 5:50 and 5:48. For me, that's a 5km PB! Thought I was going to die on that last uphill. Let them go for the second loop, but after that, running 6:30min pace felt like a walk in the park.
Came home and showed the training record to my coach. I think he might be on the same thing @PastorVincent suspects of his coach because he said something about sub60 for my 10km race next weekend. Man I'm going to be sore tomorrow.15 -

I sweat no matter the temperatures! When it’s freezing my hair actually freezes and then it’s soaking wet when I start to get warm. Hope your toe is not giving you any problems today!3 -

They need to share this stuff.

Been a while since I shared this, but it is so true. This attitude which is very pervasive among the running community is part of why I choose running as my “sport.” It is me versus me, not me versus you.

Cloudy, 28 degrees F, with a light breeze out of the southeast. Cols enough for whisker water, but not cold enough for an ice beard. Had some minor left hamstring twinges up high near the glute, but nothing major.
Some snow and ice on the wooden bridges, but footing was not an issue -- yet.

@greenolivetree Sorry to hear about your toe. That stinks.
@PastorVincent You can do it! Hopefully there won't be any holes on the route big enough for you, or a clown, to fall in.
@krisymm Great run! What race are you training for?
@Avidkeo Don't beat yourself up. I'm impressed that you got in 15K. No sleep will zap your energy for sure. Glad you got some rest and will have some better shifts coming up.
@shanaber Yup. It's cold here too...23°F today and supposed to have record lows on Tuesday. I think it's hilarious that you asked the man to hose you down.

Well done! Learning to run with only what you can carry on you is a huge help in races (not to mention training!). Walking the water station is a good plan for some, but depending on whatever they have for fule/water is almost never wise. The stops might not (probably will not) happen when you need to fuel/water and you have no control over quantity or quality.
Besides you can still walk the water stations if you need to, even if you do not partake in their fare.

Was in the teens when I got up here, but no run today. Me and my truck (and teenage son of course) will be helping someone move today. I think that counts as cross-training!

Another suggestion, one I personally do, is to buy TRAIL RUNNING SHOES and use them for running in the snow and ice. They do far better than street shoes and do not have metal screws in them so if you want to duck into a store/coffee shop/etc you do not have to worry about scratching up floors/etc.5 -
