26.2 miles on Sun. at the Louisville Marathon - it was perfect weather starting out, but ended up hot later on and there were many areas on the course without much or any shade. Also, they have serious hills in Louisville. I had some BG challenges and a bit of cramping, but it was not bad overall for a race. It was a bit on the slower side of average for me, but not as slow as the 2 Sept. marathons.
I'm quite tired and have to be back to work tomorrow. I already mostly unpacked from the weekend, but I need sleep ASAP.
You did back to backs in TWO DIFFERENT STATES? Go you! You earned your rest!4 -
... This was a test to see if I might be able to run my race without them but proved to me that my feet weren't ready for that change yet....
Speaking of ospreys - the resident trail osprey was back out in the dead tree with a crow that was reading him the riot act. The osprey was just looking at him like, dude, leave me alone! Right after I took the picture the crow gave up and flew away....
Is there a reason *not* to wear orthotics? I love the observation about the osprey. Moments like that are why I love running outdoors. Around here, though, you're more likely to encounter aggressive owls that go after runners, lol.
@durhammfp - actually a couple of reasons. 1) I would like my feet and ankles and the rest of legs/body to be strong enough to support my running naturally. I think I would have less injuries/problems if all were aligned and my form correct without the orthotics. 2) I have lots of problems finding running shoes that fit well with the orthotics and they are much more comfortable without them. 3) the orthotics now cause my forefoot to fall asleep and then it starts to hurt.

@T1DCarnivoreRunner that is freaking amazing that you ran two full marathons back to back!! 😵 You are a super beast!!2

Was out running my 10k at the weekend and witnessed 3 dogs attacking 3 horses, the rider got thrown from the horse but was ok and these dogs were chasing the horse for a good 5 mins. It just reminded me how jumpy horses are as an ex rider. I walked when I got near the horses as they were so jumpy already but how does everyone else deal with running near horses?8
-
Wow @adampeart that was good of you to jump in. I keep well clear of horses, a little too often the trail I jog has loose horses from the horse sanctuary next to it and I just head for the nearest tree until they go past and let the sanctuary owners know they have a stray again. Not big or brave enough to try and stop them.0
-
I didn't do much in the end just checked on the rider and tried to keep 1 of the dogs away, was not picking a fight with the German Sheppard though!! Yep think if I see any more horses as I'm likely to on my longer route then will use it as a rest break and refuelling time. Wasn't something I had thought of before
Well done you for letting the sanctuary know most wouldn't bother doing that, horses can cause proper damage even when approached from the front.4 -
@T1DCarnivoreRunner - wow! Congratulations on your back-to-back marathons. Having seen a friend do that a few weeks ago, I can't imagine, and all the respect to you for the strength and endurance to do that. And then go to work the next day? I hope you can rest and treat yourself to some relaxation and recovery time.
Thanks so much @rheddmobile, @quilteryoyo, @shanaber, @TheMrWobbly, @Scott6255, @PastorVincent and @Tramboman!
Waking up with some regret that I didn't finish raking my yard yesterday. Winter storm warning starting at 1 pm today and up to 9 inches of snow possible.3 -

Well if the snow covers the yard, then you have nothing to rake3 -

Out of sight, out of mind works for me! Until spring when my grass is dead I guess.
And thank you for your comments on my race yesterday too!3 -

Honestly, we do not rake in the fall. If we do anything we just run the mower over the leaves and mulch them. I am not sure where this idea that falling leaves is bad for grass, but IME at least it has never panned out that way. I claim no horticulture expertises though.1 -
6 miles this morning. All I can say is Ouch. Every step was painful.

@T1DCarnivoreRunner Great job on back to back marathon's. I can't imagine.
@rheddmobile Hope you can figure out what is going on with your leg. Sounds really annoying. Also hope it doesn't get any worse. I'm with you on the race. I'd throw on an extra layer and run. Sad for the organizers that no more than that showed up, I'm sure. Or, maybe they didn't care since they got their money anyway.2 -

If it was me and my race, I would be sad no one showed up. I mean if I just wanted money, I could stand out front of a store with a can. To go through all the work of a race, and then have no one show? That I think would be very discouraging.
But that is just me maybe.3 -

@T1DCarnivoreRunner – Wow! Back to back marathons! Amazing! Congratulations!
@Avidkeo – nothing wrong with scheduling a rest day at least once a week either!

I've been absent on the board here due to my running issues. I've notice for a while now, but lately it has been more frequent, that when I run, I get headaches. For those who may remember, I suffer clinical migraines, so my headaches last several days at a time. And for being a full time student with assignments constantly due...not a good thing!
Therefore, I've been rather hesitant to run. I've been walking quite a bit, and actually started to look forward to those. I put on a podcast (currently "Cults" is my go to!) and just start booking it. I have talked to my new doctor and he has increased and changed some of my medication in hopes to counter headaches before they begin, but now I am just nervous to start again!
I know November has started, but I guess I need to put some kind of goal to help me GO! So, I do plan to keep doing my walks, I find they do help me mentally. However, as a trial to get me back & see how the headaches go, I plan to run 10 miles.
Run 10 miles
Continue Walks

Morning all, well done to everyone! Some awesome achievements over the last few days.
So getting back on the wagon has been harder than I thought it would be. I have now realised why I crashed so spectacularly, I was trying to do to much. I had basically signed myself up for 1hr+ of exercise every day, as well as looking aster my kids, working full time etc. I definitely stick to things better when it's only about 30 mins a day with a weekly long run.
So to that end I've worked out my own strength training plan, where I do a basic total body workout tues, Thurs and Sunday. I will run Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat. I'll see how this goes and adjust as I go.
Also I realised I'm binging in the evening, so I'm doing If properly. I'll still track as well.
I'm going to do this for 2 weeks and reassess. And hopefully find a balance.
Hi! Single mom of two, here. I work usually fifty hours a week and one of my kids has autism and Tourette's. The other is ADHD as all get out (you're welcome, small human). We have three different therapies per week + tutoring + church + whatever fun we can fit in.... Needless to say, I can empathize with your plight. What works for me is doing what is IMPORTANT before what just seems URGENT. And also refusing - ABSOLUTELY REFUSING - to accept any guilt or shame for not being able to do EVERYTHING, ALL AT ONCE, 100% of the time. On my best days, I'm superhuman. On my worst days, my kids are fed and know they are loved and we do what is most important.
Go easy on yourself, but not too easy. And if you have a day where you don't feel like you cut it, assess the areas you think you can reasonably improve. If there aren't any, then try your best again the next day.
You can do this!15 -
@T1DCarnivoreRunner congratulations on your back-to-back marathons!! Incredible!quilteryoyo wrote: »@TheMrWobbly Great job completing your first HM!
@katharmonic Glad the race went much better than anticipated and congratulations on your time improvement!
@Camaramandy648 WTG!!!
@Avidkeo Finding the balance is hard! Sounds like you have a good plan. Hope it works for you.
I did a long, slow treadmill run this afternoon. I set a new PR for distance! I ran 7 miles! I was trying to go slow enough that my HR wouldn't be too high and I wouldn't be dead at the end. I accomplished both, for the most part, but found that running slower means it takes a lot longer to finish a set distance....duh! It's probably worth it though. Today, I watched almost and entire Hallmark movie during the run (including 12 + minutes of warm up and cool down walking.) The 7 miles took me 1:36:07.
Ditto - and congrats to you @quilteryoyo for your distance PR. I almost ran 7 miles too, but stopped at 6.71 because I was almost home and wanted to walk a little ways for cooldown. Including the walk would have made it 7.
November Miles - 23.25/70, walk 6.14
11/03 - 6.25; walk 1.44
11/04 - walk 1.35
11/05 - 3.56
11/06 - 3.63
11/07 - 3.1
11/08 - walk 1.12
11/09 - unplanned rest day
11/10 - 6.71; walk 2.23
Saturday I slept in, then didn't have time for my run before my hair appointment. Afterwards, I had errands and then our DnD session in the afternoon. I was going to run after that, but we all decided to go out to eat. By the time we got home, I was just about ready for bed. So that was that.
Yesterday I had 6 miles on the schedule. It was really foggy in the morning; though not too cold, I did not relish the idea of running in it again. Instead, after walking the dogs, I ate breakfast and took a short nap. Later, my husband and I had words which ended with "I don't even want to talk to you right now"... okay then. I was already planning on going for my run, and that seemed like a good time to go.
It was almost 40 degrees by then, warming up just a touch in the 80 minutes of the run. Since I hadn't eaten much and it was past my usual lunchtime, I put a package of energy chews in my flipbelt along with my squishy water bottle. It took a little finagling to figure out how to keep the water bottle in there without it being uncomfortable, or hitting it when I swung my arms or worrying about it falling out. I probably didn't really need it or the chews, but still glad to have them. The route I chose took me up a hill about 1.5 miles in, which is between 5-9.2% grade. I tried to run all the way up. Almost made it, too. That is now my goal... to run up that hill. (I probably could walk faster but I want to run it.) After the hill, I drank some water and ate a chew. A mile or so later, I washed down a couple more. At 4 miles, I stopped and did some leg swings, then every 2/3 to 3/4 of a mile after that, I either did air squats or leg swings. My hips feel pretty good today so I'll probably continue that practice on my long runs.
My Garmin was acting up on Saturday so I reset it, and didn't have my screens or HR Zones set up properly. Oops. No, Garmin, I didn't run for over an hour in Zone 5, hahaha! Looking at it now, my pace and average HR were only a little higher than my normal, though still in Zone 2 once I adjusted it again. Nice! Looks like I'm doing well with that easy running pace.10 -

I agree with this completely. That was actually a big part of running the 5.5k race I ran on Saturday. It was moved forward because they called a general election here for the day it was supposed to be, and they can't hold races on election days for some reason. So I wasn't sure about racing less than a week after running a HM.
BUT apart from the fact that I'm tight and I had paid and they wouldn't give me my money back or defer for next year, I read in the small print they were going to have to limit it to 700 runners. When I checked online in the morning, there were only 320 people signed up, not even half what they had over-confidently decided they were restricting it too, and I just felt sorry for them!
Turns out I was fine and actually enjoyed it, though I was careful to take it pretty slow and not really race it apart from picking off a couple of targets over the last mile or so.
Pretty impressive, it was 2 loops. I had joked to my husband that the winners would be reaching the finish line as I was finishing my first loop. Well! I was still half a mile or so from the end of the loop when a guy rode past me on a bike blowing a whistle. I thought he was messing about, but nope, the lead runner flew past me! He finished in 16 minutes something, two and a half minutes ahead of the second guy!!!!!

On Saturday I decided to run the Sugar Hill trail system. I signed up for a timed 6-hour run which is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving on these trails – the Oxbow Ultra. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do and even though I’m not trained for an ultra distance or will be setting any PRs I decided to just do what I can do in that 6 hours. They have a 12-hour and a 24-hour distance also but 6 is enough for me! Each loop is 5 miles and you must complete an entire loop for it to count. I ran 2 loops on Saturday. It was 24F when I started but up to 38F when I finished. I started with a long-sleeve shirt and jacket and gloves. I shed the gloves after the first couple of miles. I kept the jacket on until about mile 8. The first loop I was unsure of the exact route and ended up going extra and my time was 1:07. The second loop I think was pretty close to the actual race route and I did it in 1:11. Even though it was shorter than what I ran on the first loop my legs were getting tired.
This morning was the start of the Hug a Runner 5K challenge. Just in time for the artic cold front coming through tonight!Top of the hill where everything opens upI expected this guy to take off when I ran behind him but he just kept a watchful eye on me.
I believe he is a great blue heron.Looking down on the railroad below. This track used to stay busy hauling coal out of the mounts of Virginia, Kentucky and WV but not so much anymore. On the day of the race, the Santa train will be passing through. It starts in Elkhorn City, KY and ends in Kingsport, TN stopping along the route to throw off toys.
This year's guest is Marty Stuart.11 -

@T1DCarnivoreRunner back-to-back marathons?! Impressive!

Monday's are usually rest days for me, but I took a rest day yesterday after my 5K on Saturday. And the weather is going to be really cold and windy this week so I decided to get a nice run in before the cold front hit. So I ran 6.5 miles this morning when it was about 62°F with 8-9 mph SSW winds. It was really nice and I had a lovely run. I also got to try out my new Noxgear Tracer 360 vest. It was great. I felt really safe with it on and it is really light and you kind of forget you are wearing it. I'm glad I ran early because about a block from home the winds started picking up. By the time I went to work at it was 20 degrees colder than when I ran and the last I check it was 35°F feels like 23° with 30 mph N winds. I will have to see what the weather is like the rest of the week. I may try to get a run in during lunch the next day or two, but before sunrise the temps are supposed to be in the twenties with feels like in the teens or single digits and 20 mph winds. I don't have the right gear to run in that so I'll see what it is like later in the day. But I was glad to get a nice run in this morning.
Than you for your comments about my race @PastorVincent , @Tramboman , @katharmonic , @Scott6255 , @Faebert and @Teresa502!
Great job on your races @katharmonic, @TheMrWobbly and @ereck44 and Wow at back to back marathons @T1DCarnivoreRunner!

Everyone has been doing so well and making so much progress. I love reading all of your reports, stories, struggles, solutions, experiencing. This has been such a great source of community for me because, as you all probably already can relate to, most of the people I see every day and work with don't give two craps about running.
I noticed yesterday during my really easy run that I wasn't really pushing myself. I never felt like I was trying very hard. That was the point - I wanted to feel what a "recovery" run feels like, because I didn't really know what that meant.
This week in my C25K, I am slated to run 20 minutes straight. I know I just did two eight minute segments a couple days ago, but running for 20 minutes without stopping really actually feels like something I probably won't be able to do.
Anyone else hit this wall before they even start?11
