Ooh I’m so behind I’m not sure if I’ll ever find time to catch up but just seeing great news from @kgirlhart - well done!
I’m working more on strength as planned this month but have done a couple of short indoor runs as part of gym training and one 10k outdoor on a gorgeous day. So basically keeping my hand in but little more really. Some good news - I may be getting access to some private physio (referral waits can be really long here in the UK) so I can try and get some professional help with my hamstring.
Happy running everyone x

I had negative splits. My average pace was 8:31. Garmin gave me a 5K PR of 26:36. My official time was 27:33 chip time and 27:36 gun time. Garmin showed the course to be 3.24 which is what it showed last year too. My overall Garmin time was 27:36 which matched the gun time. I don't really know if I should count it as a PR or not, but I do. I think the course is long. And when I ran a HM that gave me an official time of 2:12 I didn't count that because that course was short and I used my Garmin number of 2:15 which was still a PR. Either way I ran it faster than last year on this same course by 2 minutes and ~30 seconds. There was a new woman in my age group who was really fast and so I ended up with 2nd AG and 4th overall woman. I was still pleased and I did get a medal which was nice because they only give medal to those who place not to everyone.
Great job!
As for the PR, you can always call it a course PR if you do not feel you earned an overall PR.
I let Strava do its thing, but I go by official race times for my own purposes. Frequently Strava reaches the distance before I reach the finish line, so it thinks most of my PR's are slightly better than they are. Close enough for me.
My friend, on the other hand, has been having trouble with his phone not locking to the GPS signal through Strava, and it's giving him jumpy maps and ridiculously fast times and PR's2 -

My Garmin does a pretty good job so I let it track my PRs mainly because a year later I will not remember what a given random chip time was, but I can always look up on Strava/Garmin/Run Keeper's history.4 -
I ran a mile super fast. ..... Jk.😉
I went to an expo/seasonal craft fair yesterday and walked 4500 steps. It was awful. I need to stretch. 😩 and have a massage.
Just wanted to say keep up the progressive work all! We all start slow.16 -
Soooo I DID IT! I ran eight minutes straight, walked five minutes, and ran another eight minutes straight.
Just a few weeks ago, I was sad about how I used to run all the time and now I can barely do it. But here’s what I didn’t say- I had much worse form and technique and would have panic about any need for endurance. What’s cool is that at this point in my life, I’m smarter and more dedicated and not afraid to do the actual learning and work.
After the first run and lifting, I picked up the dog and took her out to the trail. I was so determined to make yesterday an actual long run because there’s no way I’ll finish a marathon well if I’m not training for distance too. We ran 3.59 and I think she’s not ready for all that. We kept having to stop. Or- I’d start running and she’d be three feet behind me on the leash. I took her home and fed and watered her (there are springs on that trail and she peed and pooped PLENTY). I still wanted my .41 (i needed four miles on the trail) so I took off out the door and ran just a little bit. When I came back i had done .84!!! That gives me a total mileage for yesterday of 6.43!!!!
There were a lot of cyclers out yesterday so i had to keep getting out of people’s way and that was frustrating bc it slowed me down so much. Also, I never felt like the dog and I could just take off like we have been doing..
I found the hill with the rhino at the top and we ran up and down that again.
And! Today I’m only sore from leg presses and rows. My calves don’t really hurt at all.
Trying to decide if I need a TOTAL rest or if I should do an easy mile recovery run....17 -

@greenolivetree thanks! I'll check it out. It bothers me a huge amount and I don't really know why...
@TheMrWobbly great race report, and congrats on your first half!
Did a lovely 5k in the forest today, tracked by my boyfriend's phone. Mine said 4.4k, which I know is wrong as I run that route regularly. Ignoring it!

09/11: 8km
10/11: 5km

Syracuse Half Marathon report:
After all my moaning about not wanting to do this race, it was not as bad as I feared. The weather was decent, cold to start but ran in a long sleeve shirt, choosing to leave my jacket behind, which was an ok choice for the most part. A few times I felt cold, especially when the wind picked up. The day started out rough when my friend who picked me up backed into a car parked right behind my driveway as we were leaving. Ugh. I feel terrible about it.
We finally made it, and this race is nice because the pre- and post-race activities are all inside the big convention center so you stay warm! My friend was also not really feeling this race so we just ran together and said we'd see how it went. The course is moderately hilly with the worst being an uphill climb for the first 1.5 miles. Then it's a few shorter hills here and there until a good downhill at about mile 8.
The worst part of the course for me mentally is a long out and back at about mile 10.5. You are within a couple of blocks of the finish but you still have to go out for about a mile and then come all the way back. And there are no spectators, the view is crappy, and you can see the people one street over heading back the other way. But that freaking turn around never comes! I hate that part.
When we made it to the last turn of the course and saw the finish line ahead, I was extremely happy. A volunteer yelled out that we had 5 traffic lights to go through and we were done! It looked far, but we picked up the pace a little. Then I saw a guy from our run club along the side and he jumped in to run is in, and definitely pushed us. It was a little sooner than I would have tried to sprint on my own, but his energy and encouragement was definitely helpful and we kicked it as best we could. Garmin tells me I was up to a 7:29 pace at the end, which is a good sprint for me. And then, blessedly, it was all over. My time was 2:21:59, which beat my last and only other time running this course by 7.5 minutes. It's pretty much right in the middle of the times I had for my two back-to-back halves three weeks ago. Given that, and the Spartan race last week, I'm definitely happy with it.
I will have to come back with pics of the awesome jacket and pretty cool medal. Right now I need a nap.

Well done, @katharmonic !!1

Extremely easy two mile “recovery” run today - the temperature is dropping tomorrow and they’re calling for snow but we have 70F today. I hope we get snow but i am certain that even if we do, it won’t stick.
All in all a good run. Also my dog definitely slows me down. I was much more efficient today6 -
Way to pick yourself up and best your previous course time @katharmonic! 7.5 minutes is a HUGE time difference in a HM, especially so soon after all those previous races. Way to go!4

5.9 on the trails this morning. I ran the first 3 miles and hiked the last 3 because doggo was tired and trying to chase me while she hiked with Dad.
I'll probably post some photos in FB Group because I'm too lazy for posting them here LOL

Well this is my first race and I wasn't actually racing so I haven't got much to report. It was the most straight forward half marathon I could find with minimal inclines. Thank you to the jogging gods who decided to keep the rain to less than 5 minutes though the downside was the winds that pushed the clouds past also pushed me backwards as I had to chase my cap around after it took off.
Everything I planned changed almost immediately. My stash of Jelly babies in the rear pocket of my jogging bottoms were dragging said bottoms lower with each stride so they had to be removed which led to the jelly baby massacre as they were scattered in the wind and gathered by nearby gulls. I threw away the water bottle in the first mile as it was so annoying sloshing around, regretted that later as the water stops were difficult for me as I struggled to take on much from the paper cups. Aside from that I just let my body do what it wanted up to 10 miles and it kept a steady pace of between 10 mins and 10:20 per mile. The last three miles were a little tougher and it was a case of telling myself I would be bonkers to not keep going for the last bit as the pace dropped to 10:30 to 10:40 a mile.
I wasn't after a time though I was happy with the chip time of 2:17:47 which is a little quicker than my app time as I started the app before the start and couldn't get my gloves off to stop it at the end.
No swag to talk about other than the medal. Still a very worthwhile day generating funds for a very worthwhile cause.
That's a real inspiration! I've enjoyed keeping up with your running regimen on the C25K forum and I'm glad you're posting here too. Were you the person asking about affordable running shoes? Did you find any you like?1 -
Hi @durhammfp - yes it was me. As an Asics fan I tracked down these Asics Gel-Phoenix 9 though I was after stability shoes so it depends on your gait. I found the Brooks I thought I lost so the Asics have gone on my Christmas list.
Thanks for the thoughts and tips @rheddmobile @PastorVincent @Scott6255 @kirstymn and @JMNagain - I will definitely walk for the water stops. I thought it would interrupt my form and then remembered I had to turn around and chase my cap in the middle of this one so walking for a water stop can't be any worse.
Congratulations on good races @katharmonic & @kgirlhart

Congrats to all who raced this weekend.
Total...13.1 miles
Goal...50 miles.

@TheMrWobbly - Congratulations on your first race and HM!! When I started I didn't know or think about walking the water stations either. I ran my first HM with a long time runner friend who had us do exactly that and it worked really well. I still do it most of the time in my races even if I don't want any water.
Congratulations @kgirlhart on a great race, PR and an AG place!! Whoot Whoot!
@katharmonic - I am so glad your race was better than expected and a 7.5 min course PR is awesome!
Today I completed my last long run before my HM on the 23. My legs were already tired and complaining at the outset but I figured they would get over it but nope they complained the entire time. I did take some breaks to stretch and also tried changing out my orthotics for a bit and then later put them back in. This was a test to see if I might be able to run my race without them but proved to me that my feet weren't ready for that change yet. My knee started hurting around mile 10.5 and since it was sharper than the ache I had at the beginning, I walked more as I promised the PT I would. I also went out too fast after my initial 1 mile warmup. I just can't seem to lock into that slower easy pace anymore. I am hoping that the HM will be better on well rested legs. It is a flat course and the weather should be pretty similar to today's (cooler mid 50's warming into the 70's).
Also I wore my hydration vest and I think it may have a leak. I haven't tested it yet but I was soaked when I got home. Much more so than could have been possible just from sweating. All the water was gone too and I don't feel like I drank that much. I haven't had it that long so I am hoping it isn't a leak, maybe user error setting it up today? Can you replace the bladders if it is a leak? It's an Osprey and I really love it.
Speaking of ospreys - the resident trail osprey was back out in the dead tree with a crow that was reading him the riot act. The osprey was just looking at him like, dude, leave me alone! Right after I took the picture the crow gave up and flew away.

Morning all, well done to everyone! Some awesome achievements over the last few days.
So getting back on the wagon has been harder than I thought it would be. I have now realised why I crashed so spectacularly, I was trying to do to much. I had basically signed myself up for 1hr+ of exercise every day, as well as looking aster my kids, working full time etc. I definitely stick to things better when it's only about 30 mins a day with a weekly long run.
So to that end I've worked out my own strength training plan, where I do a basic total body workout tues, Thurs and Sunday. I will run Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat. I'll see how this goes and adjust as I go.
Also I realised I'm binging in the evening, so I'm doing If properly. I'll still track as well.
I'm going to do this for 2 weeks and reassess. And hopefully find a balance.11 -

Is there a reason *not* to wear orthotics? I love the observation about the osprey. Moments like that are why I love running outdoors. Around here, though, you're more likely to encounter aggressive owls that go after runners, lol.

@TheMrWobbly Great job completing your first HM!
@katharmonic Glad the race went much better than anticipated and congratulations on your time improvement!
@Camaramandy648 WTG!!!
@Avidkeo Finding the balance is hard! Sounds like you have a good plan. Hope it works for you.
I did a long, slow treadmill run this afternoon. I set a new PR for distance! I ran 7 miles! I was trying to go slow enough that my HR wouldn't be too high and I wouldn't be dead at the end. I accomplished both, for the most part, but found that running slower means it takes a lot longer to finish a set distance....duh! It's probably worth it though. Today, I watched almost and entire Hallmark movie during the run (including 12 + minutes of warm up and cool down walking.) The 7 miles took me 1:36:07.

8 super easy miles on Mission Bay, San Diego. About 70 degrees with an ocean breeze.8

This, also most (if not all) hydration packs you can change out the bladder with a new one if the old one leaks. The bladder does not normally even have to be the same brand as the pack.4 -
Today's run ended up being 1.5 miles on treadmill, steady pace with varying incline. Also walked dogs 1 mile and walked 45 min with my husband.
@quilteryoyo Nice job on the long treadmill session
@avidkeo Good luck with your new plan! There's only so much time and I find myself always getting obsessed with one thing while other areas suffer!
@cameramandy648 Congrats on conquering that 8 min

26.2 miles on Sat. at the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon - it was a bit cold starting out and very windy. I had a lot of BG challenges, but made it through with a slow time (but average for me).
26.2 miles on Sun. at the Louisville Marathon - it was perfect weather starting out, but ended up hot later on and there were many areas on the course without much or any shade. Also, they have serious hills in Louisville. I had some BG challenges and a bit of cramping, but it was not bad overall for a race. It was a bit on the slower side of average for me, but not as slow as the 2 Sept. marathons.
I'm quite tired and have to be back to work tomorrow. I already mostly unpacked from the weekend, but I need sleep ASAP.

@katharmonic Good job at your half! That sprint at the end of a half is impressive, sounds like you finished with plenty in the tank.
Husband’s birthday yesterday went well, got 10k in today with just absolutely perfect weather, about 65 f and bright sunlight. My fellow Memphians continue to amaze me, most of the runners we passed were wearing long tights or track pants plus hoodies with jackets over them. In 65 degree weather. With no wind to speak of. One runner was wearing a puffer jacket. I would cook, and I’m cold natured!
Speaking of Memphis and weather, I checked the results from the race I didn’t get to run because of my husband’s birthday Saturday, just to get an idea of what it would have been like. Out of 242 registered only 82 people showed up! Because... at race time it was... 27 degrees. Granted that’s a tad chillier than usual for Memphis, but not much, given that it was November at 8 in the morning, and I don’t know about you, but if I paid good money for a race I’m gonna put on an extra layer and go. Unlike, apparently, two out of three Memphians who are afraid of a bright shiny day if the temp dips below freezing. Anyway, due to the no shows, if my husband and I had done this race, I would probably have taken grandmaster, and definitely would have taken my AG if I didn’t actually break an ankle, since there was only one finisher in my AG going my easy pace. From the numbers it looks like men are more likely to run in the cold than women - usually the women outnumber the men at our local races, but here it was reversed. I can’t decide if the results make me more or less disappointed that we didn’t go. On the one hand, the bling was cool, but on the other hand, winning at a race where nobody shows up just sounds sad.
Today’s run was...not great. My weird hamstring twinge is back, after a couple of months of not bothering me, and I don’t know what’s causing it. My legs today are rested, and apart from the weird twinge which stabs me in the back of the leg at random intervals my legs feel great. I would be running easy, everything lovely, then bam, I’m hopping on one foot trying not to swear for a few strides. Then perfectly fine again - not even tight, no pain - until a random later time. Walking doesn’t help, it does it when I’m walking. Doesn’t seem to have anything to do with gait or tiredness or anything I can figure out. My knee brace does keep my leg from collapsing when it happens, so I just ignored it and ran anyway. But it’s really not ideal. I can’t tell if it’s a nerve or a tendon misfire or what. No pain after running at all. Not even sore.6
