about plans for 2020
Well its about this time of year I do start thinking about what I'm going to do. For the last 3 years I've actually had a goal for the year, though this year it wasn't very well thought out and I did not complete it. That said it was also due to some major life changes.
So the goal for 2019 was to lose the final 10kg, and run 2 half marathons. Also I wanted to get under 2hrs for the Kerikeri Half in November as that's the one I did so well on last year, and was my entire focus in 2018.
Well nope, didn't lose the 10kg, however I haven't gained either. I'm pretty much the same now that I was last November, so I still call that a win! I haven't gained back the 20kg I lost 2 years ago, that in itself is an achievement.
I also did not run a single half marathon. There kerikeri half is in the middle of November, but I've had to pull out.
This is due to the BIG change, where in the middle of the year we uplifted out entire life and moved to a new town 9hrs away from where we were. I've gone from a 9-5 job to working a rotating roster and having call. This was very disruptive to any regular running schedule and I have been very on and off over the last 9 months.
So now I'm thinking about what I want to concentrate on next year. I still want to lose the last 10kg, to get to a more healthier weight, but I am happy at my current size.
I want to keep running and would like to do some more events. I'm going to make Parkrun a more regular thing, and try improve my 5k time. But other than continuing doing what I'm doing I'm a little rudderless.
Open to suggestions!8 -

Seems a bit of a stretch!
Not a stretch! You can do it! And don’t feel like you have to be at a certain weight to sign up for an organized race, I did my first half while I was still in the obese BMI category and there were lots of people my size and bigger
There is even a category for "big" runners in many races that you can try and place in if you miss your age group.0 -
Well its official. I'm crazy. At the last minute (yesterday li agreed to be part of a team doing a relay race around our mountain (pic for context). We start the relay at 11pm tonight. My first leg will be 9.4k at approximately 5am. My second leg will be 6k about an hr after that.
Sooo glad I got up to 10k a week ago haha
I'm really looking forward to this!

I could run tonight, and easily reach my goal, but instead we're celebrating.
My son had a phenomenal game as goalkeeper and came up with some huge saves. We played last year's state champions. The game was tied 2-2 after regulation. We scored the winning goal with just 11 seconds left in the second overtime period. After that it would have been a shootout to determine the winner.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding @ACSL3 ! Wishing you many happy and healthy years together. Sounds like you're starting out on the right track...pun intended.3

Yep. For example from the Pittsburgh Marathon:What are the requirements to compete in the Clydesdale/Athena division?
The Clydesdale/Athena division is a weight division for male and female runners competing the
marathon or half marathon. To be eligible, male and female competitors must weigh-in at the GNC Live
Well Health and Fitness Expo during operating hours on race weekend.
The Clydesdale division is open to men over 200 pounds and the Athena division is open to women over
150 pounds. Awards will be given to the top two males and female in both the “Under 40” and “Over
40” categories in the Marathon and Half Marathon events.
I only have seen it in the big races, but I have not really looked much since it does not apply to me or my wife.2 -
@eleanorhawkins I tried to pull up the spreadsheet to see what time slots were needing to be filled for the @MobyCarp tribute a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't see it. Is there anything during the daylight hours in the USA Eastern Time Zone? I might could fill one if there is.
@7lenny7 Great video. I did see the guy in the tie. You might have been in the group at the beginning, with the headlamps. It was hard to tell who was who in the dark. Congratulations to your son's team! That's fantastic!
@Avidkeo Congratulations on keeping your weight off for two years. That's major in my book. That looks like an awesome place for a race. Enjoy!
I'm going to set a goal of 50 miles again. Thanksgiving plans will probably put a dent in the mileage that I should be doing.
I have a question. I have been following the Jeff Galloway 10K plan with no actual 10K planned. I was just doing it to have a plan that would increase my mileage and fitness. The plan ends on 1 Dec with a 10K. It has the 2 weeks before as taper weeks (weeks of 11 and 18 Nov). Since I am NOT going to be running a 10K the first of Dec, but will very likely be running a 5K on Dec 7th, should I cut back on the mileage and finish the plan as it is written? Or, should I concentrate on maybe fewer, faster miles in Nov? I guess I really should've figured this out before setting my goal, huh? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Congratulations to your son and his team @7lenny7! That is a fantastic achievement!!
@quilteryoyo - I have never tapered for anything under a HM. Doesn't mean you shouldn't but for a 5K maybe just cut back a bit the week before the race so your legs feel fresh. I would continue with the plan and maybe repeat the last week before the taper. You could also add in a tempo run or a 5k pace run each week just to see how the faster pace feels.4 -

Well. The answer lies in where you are in the training. And what do you want to do?
Option 1. Stay the course with the training plan, run the 5k. Rest, recover and run
Option 2. Revisit the previous week, no cut back and push through as if training is continuous.
Option 3. ... Something I hadn't thought of or just forgot. i think my cat gave me his cold.
Questions
-Do you want a PR? Option 1
-How much training have you absorbed? Do you need a cut back for a 5k? You shouldn't, but if you do then do it.
-Where are you going from here? Are you building miles? Option 2, but remember cut back weeks. Or are you ready to move into speed work? I'd definitely put that off until after a race. Speed work is a good way to get injured.
What feels right? (Not of my choices,), but what plan feels right to you? That'll be the one.3 -

@Elise4270 is right when she says it depends on what you want to do. Let me state it this way...
For now, run one of the tapper weeks as a cut back week. And start your new plan instead of the last week of the 10k plan.
Mid term:
Do you want to build distance? If so look for a 15k or a 10 miler training plan to start.
Do you want to build speed? Look for a new 10k plan that is more advanced and push yourself a little harder
Do you want to maintain what you have? Repeat the last 1/2 of the plan, but push every run a bit harder than your first time through
As for your 5k race, if you can run 10k now you probably can just "tapper" by resting the 2 days before the 5k and be fine. I think you can pretty much ignore the 5k race in your planning here outside of a couple of days rest before, and maybe after if you need it (take this by feel).

Do bandaid help with blisters? I went for a 5k walk today, no special socks and have a tender spot under the pad of my big toe/head of 1st Metatarsal. So given im doing a 10k run in around 14hrs, though I'll be wearing proper socks and shoes which have never given me blisters before.
I'll be fine, right?0 -

What I do:
I AM NOT A DOCTOR AND IF THIS KILLS YOU THAT IS WHAT YOU GET FOR TAKING RANDOM ADVICE ON THE INTERNET
Drain the blister, cover in triple-antibiotic, and put a bandaid on. Then I run as normal.
Doctors say not to do this as it risks infection. That is how you know I am not a doctor.10 -

Why can't we have a laugh our *kitten* off button!
I think im panicking over nothing. Its that "sore but not a blister yet" feel... Sp probably perfect in 12 hrs4 -

A good Band-Aid couldn't hurt right? Definitely wear some great socks. You guys have liquid Band-Aid? It won't rub off. Super glue works but it is a neurotoxin until dry... So it's a no-no.
I wonder if the default of a runner is "oh kitten!", Maybe we (y'all. Not me) run to quell the kittens. I find everything to be a major issue since I can't go run it off.5 -
I'm going to put in for 170 miles this month. I had 172 in Oct. vs. a goal of 160, but was the first time in awhile that I exceeded my goal. I have the following races planned in Nov.:
11/3 - Marshall University Marathon
11/9 - Indianapolis Monumental Marathon
11/10 - Louisville Marathon
I have nothing planned for Thanksgiving, so if there are any marathons in a state that I've not yet run and I can make the travel work (much easier if on that Fri. or Sat.), then I'm thinking I should sign up. Does anyone know of any marathons on 11/29 or 11/30?3 -
I’m still here, and was following and liking the October thread between 50 and a few hundred posts behind, and just caught up there and in this one. I didn’t even really tally my runs because I’ve been almost completely sidelined for now by plantar fasciitis. No fun. I’m going to hope to start the PT’s “return to running” schedule next week, after about 6 weeks away.
I’ve been staying busy, though—I’m in the middle of a slew of work trips, and have three more before Thanksgiving. Then to Utah for a week of snowboarding Thanksgiving week, so I’m hoping not to lose ground on my foot healing before then!
In the meantime, I’ve decided to build a base for triathlon training, and have managed to bike most days and swim 2K+ yards a couple of times each week. And most exciting, managed a 2/3 mi very casual open water swim on the WA coast last weekend in 52 degree water! (Thanks to a new wetsuit!) But I really am missing running and am so glad for a little vicarious enjoyment with you all.
So my goal for November: once I can start running again, get to 3+ runs per week by the end of the month, even if they are relatively short or incorporate walking breaks.11 -

I use hydrocolloidal bandaids over existing blisters and have never had an issue, even with unpopped or really bad open blisters. The hydrocolloidal bandaids usually but not always prevent blisters, though, if it’s on the edge of my foot where the skin rotates and shears, it keeps the surface safe but there can be a deep blister.
KT Tape or moleskin can also prevent blisters.
For a hotspot for 5k I would leave it, for 10k if it were me I would put something over it proactively.2 -
In for 50 miles with stretch goal of 60. I will probably run some sort of turkey trot on Thanksgiving, otherwise no immediate goals this month.
If someone can interpret the chart for me and tell me what spots are left in Memphis time I will try and cover something on Saturday. I am going to dedicate my Saturday run for @MobyCarp regardless.2 -

You’ll probably be fine. If you’re worried pop a plaster in your pocket and put it on if it seems to get worse while you’re running. If you want to, get some Sleek tape from the pharmacy and put that on - it’s like a second skin. Works well for blister-prone spots.

I've packed my bag and I feel like an ultra trail runner! Because I'm doing two legs, so total of 15k but not in one go, and one leg is likely to be pre-dawn, and the other post dawn, Im planning on wearing a tank with sleeves. I've also got my gloves in my hydration pack, I've packed a whole second running outfit (shoes, pants, vest, socks) as there is every chance it will rain during my first run. I have jelly beans for sugar hits, my wallet, some regular clothing, a wind breaker and a towel
What have I missed haha!

Sometimes @7lenny7 you need a 'super-like' button. Give your son a massive high 5 from me.
I am thinking of giving up my soccer (hate calling it that as a Brit) however I keep tweaking muscles and it is impacting progress on other exercises. At nearly 50 years old I am going to have to seriously think about how I get my exercise.2
