November 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

Biked to the track today. Really need to work on my bike, something's off just enough to be annoying.
I felt like I got in a good quality 4x800@5k pace workout, but it can be discouraging when I feel like I'm putting in the same effort as gazelle-man who was also there, and yet he kept gliding past me. I was also looking at pictures from the half marathon and don't get why so many people are just naturally so much faster than me despite probably doing similar training. Perhaps the solution is to smile, don't focus on who's faster unless I'm cheering them on, and see what I can do to be faster for me
For the rest of the year I plan to repeat weeks from the beginning of my next marathon plan. Basically doing weeks 3, 4, then 1-8, then I can start 2020 either back at 1 or do 4-8 twice before continuing on. So there's a plan
Speaking of soccer, I was also glad I wasn't paying for what looked like private soccer lessons that were going on while I was at the track. Two coaches (in matching outfits), tons of nice equipment and probably paying to use the artificial turf school field, all for one little long-haired guy who was decked out in soccer clothing. He seemed pretty good, though.
Congratulations to @7lenny7 's son & team!
November goal 100 miles
Upcoming races:
Dec. 14 - CityTrail 5k (#3 of 6)6 -
Tomorrow's race will be a much cooler set of temps than I have been running in
I know that many of you will be like "thats great temps!" but with my Raynauds and not having run in that since last year I am concerned about the fact that we will have to park a good 2 hours before race start and hike across city from the finish line area to the start line area, then stand around for at least an hour to hour and a half waiting for the race. Oh not to mention the walk back to the Jeep after the race when dripping wet with sweat.
The problem is dressing for that part vs dressing for the run. It is only 10 miles so I will not need a hydration vest, but I am thinking of wearing one without the bladder to stash extra clothes in. I can use gear check for something to put on after the race at least. I do not really want the extra weight but not sure what else to do.
This is why I have given up on winter races though. Getting dressed and running right out the door is one thing. Standing around begging them to fire the starting gun is a completely different thing.6 -
T1DCarnivoreRunner wrote: »I'm going to put in for 170 miles this month. I had 172 in Oct. vs. a goal of 160, but was the first time in awhile that I exceeded my goal. I have the following races planned in Nov.:
11/3 - Marshall University Marathon
11/9 - Indianapolis Monumental Marathon
11/10 - Louisville Marathon
I have nothing planned for Thanksgiving, so if there are any marathons in a state that I've not yet run and I can make the travel work (much easier if on that Fri. or Sat.), then I'm thinking I should sign up. Does anyone know of any marathons on 11/29 or 11/30?
I noticed these on a half marathon calendar site that I use:
Thursday, November 28
Wattle Waddle Marathon – Snohomish, WA
Saturday, November 30
Stennis Space Center Marathon – Mississippi
NCR Marathon – Glencoe, MD
Fiery Gizzard Run – Foster Falls State Park, Sequatchie, TN
Have you heard of the Mainly Marathon series? They have a lot of distances on the weekends and during the week. I thought about participating in the Appalachian series since three of those races are within easy driving distance for me. All of the races are small loops usually in parks with what sounds like a phenomenal aid station set up.
Good luck this weekend!

Can you wear a throw-away sweatshirt or long-sleeve shirt for the pre-race and first mile? I keep a bag of old shirts that I would normally toss just for this purpose. A lot of people also visit thrift stores and find some cheap clothes. Most of the big races pick up the extras and take them to a local charity.1 -
For motivation, over on Garmin Connect i created a 'until Thanksgiving' challenge with a couple of friends, that usually helps me to not miss workouts.2

@T1DCarnivoreRunner Check out Runningintheusa.com

The Fiery Gizzard is one I REALLY want to run next year. We have family nearby and it would work well with a Thanksgiving visit.

@PastorVincent I hope you come up with a plan to get you to the starting line. I'd hate to see you not be able to race.
So given that it is the November Thread, anyone else has plans for 2020?
Yep
Pending discussions with my wife, I may attempt my first 100 Mile race in March. It wouldn't be a technical trail, or even much of a trail, actually. It would be the Prairie Spirit 100 in Kansas at the end of March. It's a crushed limestone rail-trail with distance options of 50K, 50M, 100K, and 100M.
I initially thought about doing the 100K, but I figure with the hilly 47 I just did three weeks ago, I could do a flat 100K now, and, the way my training cycle is ramping up, a flat 100M should be feasible by March. I'm going to try to recruit my daughter and her friend to crew me, and possibly pace me for a section. They have zero experience with this sort of thing but I think their mere presence would be an emotional boost. I might have to see if @rusgolden would be interested in pacing me for a leg or two as well.
Beyond that, with no kid soccer games to watch next summer I should be able to keep my fitness up and am considering running the Superior Fall 50M race, which I think would be harder than the Prairie Spirit 100M, with it's 250 foot/mile average elevation gain. I need to make that decision soon since the lottery opens up January 1st for that race.
Then perhaps the Heartland 100M race in October in Kansas. That's the one which has a rule about not harassing the cows on the road.
Here's how 2020 is shaping up so far:
2020 Races
01/11/2020 - St Croix Winter Ultra (Volunteer)
01/25/2020 - Securian Half Marathon - St. Paul, MN
02/22/2020 - Pyscho Wyco 50K - Kansas City, MO
03/28/2020 - Prairie Spirit Trail Race 100M - Ottawa, KS
07/11/2020 - Eugene Curnow Trail Marathon - Carlton, MN
09/05/2020 - Outrun Homelessness 5K - Savage, MN
09/12/2020 - Superior Fall Trail Marathon
09/19/2020 - Surly Loppet Trail HM (or In Yan Teopa)
09/26/2020 - Grand Traverse 27M - Duluth, MN
10/04/2020 - Medtronic TC 10 Mile - Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN
10/10/2020 - Heartland 100M - Cassoday, KS

I could run tonight, and easily reach my goal, but instead we're celebrating.
My son had a phenomenal game as goalkeeper and came up with some huge saves. We played last year's state champions. The game was tied 2-2 after regulation. We scored the winning goal with just 11 seconds left in the second overtime period. After that it would have been a shootout to determine the winner.
Congratulations!!!!!1 -

Well, I rounded off last month with another short run to the gym, my first run in a little more than a week after the shin pain started up again. It felt tough, but not miserable. I ended the month with 41.2 miles, just a hair more than September. This month I’ve scheduled 50 miles, but am really hoping to focus on rebuilding healthy habits across the board. That’s going to include running 3-4 times a week, lifting 2-3 times a week, more walking, more yoga, and less drinking.
I spent the last week brainstorming a list of daily “best practices” to keep myself healthy and productive. Although I’m not going to make myself do everything every day, I did decide to start the month off right by trying to check off every item today. So far I’ve got three down (not hitting snooze, weighing myself, and doing morning yoga) and have gotten a start on another four (checking an item off the long-term to-do list, doing a daily household chore, working at my desk instead of from the couch or bed, and wearing my watch to help remember to stand every hour). That leaves five more to go: walking the dog, napping no more than an hour, spending some quality time with the newest cat, going to bed sober, and doing yoga before bed.
I figure no matter what happens the rest of the month, it can’t hurt getting off to a good start. So far, so good! I’m planning on taking myself out to lunch in an hour or so (after walking the dog and before taking a short nap), then running to the gym tonight, so that’ll get me on the board for November.
Also, high fives to the other obese runners in the club! I’ve regained weight this year and am back in obese BMI, but even when I started running a couple of years ago I was still in the mid-to-high overweight BMI. Running has definitely been harder this year than last, but I have no idea what has to do with weight and what has to do with other factors, so I’m just going to keep on keeping on. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of a “big” race category (I’d never heard of that either) but I like the idea of being an “Athena”.

Plans for 2020! I know that I want to repeat the TCM 10 Miler or 10K if the lottery doesn't go my way. TCM also does a Valentine’s 5K, and there just aren’t a lot of options in January or March so I’m thinking I’ll repeat two races I enjoyed this year. The Strive races are a small series benefiting a nearby school district that I’ve been wanting to try, and Get in Gear and Torchlight are local traditions I want to check off my list.
ESTRS and the Loppets are trail races I meant to try this year but wasn’t able to fit in with my reduced running schedule. Stillwater, Lift Bridge, Gopher to Badger and the Log Run are all part of a series in a really lovely part of the state along the Wisconsin border - I did Lift Bridge this year and enjoyed it enough that I’d like to give some of the other ones a shot. I'll want to get at least one half in if I can, and maybe plan another destination race with my sister and BIL.
My tentative winter running goal is to stay in 10K shape and work up to a comfortable 10 mile long run. It’d be nice to take a PR shot at the Hot Dash in March, either for the 5K or the 10 Mile. Depending on how much (or little) running I do, I might look into swimming or parkour classes. The YWCA is having an open house where you can join for free, so I might hit that for swimming and for emergency treadmill/indoor track access. My real goal will be to stay healthy.
2020 Race Planning!
January 25: Securian Winter Run 10K or Half Marathon
February: Valentine’s Day TC 5K
March: Hot Dash 5K or 10Mi
April 4: Spirit of White Bear Lake (Strive) 5Mi
April 25: Get in Gear 10K
May: ESTRS Lebanon 10K
May 17: CityTrail Loppet 10Mi or 10K
May 23: Stillwater Half Marathon or 10K
June: ESTRS French 5K
June 27: Lift Bridge 10Mi or 10K
July: ESTRS Lebanon 7Mi
July: Torchlight 5K
August 8: Gopher to Badger Half Marathon or 10K
September 19: Surley Trail Loppet Half Marathon or 7Mi or 5K
September 21: Stillwater Boom Site Log Run 10Mi or 12K
October: TCM 10Mi or 10K
October: Bemidji Blue Ox Half Marathon or 26K
November: Kowalski's Strive 10 Miler
December: Reindeer Run

@Avidkeo that sounds like a VERY cool race! Have a great time! That's quite a well defined circle around the mountain. There must be some sort of regulation or law prohibiting any development within that circle I'm guessing? A park or preserve perhaps? I may be too late for suggestions, but make sure you have warm clothes for between runs and after runs. And maybe a camp chair if there's a place to hang out between your legs of the relay. Thermos of coffee? I'm so exited for you! (and I'm not going to lie, a little jealous too!).
@PastorVincent ah yes, the Clydesdale and Athena. Now that you mention it I have heard of them, but have never seen them in any race I've been in.
@quilteryoyo you're right, I am in the start of the race. I forgot I was wearing a blue jacket and a yellow buff in the beginning so I wasn't looking for it. I came on the video around the 34 second mark
Thanks @scott6255 ! His Instagram name uses lenny1212 as part of it, so yeah, similar. I should have him change it to 12lenny12. Also thanks to @quilteryoyo @TheMrWobbly @shanaber @polskagirl01 and @Tramboman
@MegaMooseEsq I'm happy to see those ESTRS races on your schedule! I'll be at the two at Lebanon Hills taking photos. I might be at French, not sure yet. I'll be running in the Securian and Surly Loppet.5 -
November goals (all ish):

2. 100km
3. Long 10km
4. 100% Morning runs

November starts with a rest day for me. But I thought I'd look at the monthly question. I guess I really need to look at my goals for 2020. It's hard to believe that this year is almost over. So far in 2020 I have only registered for the Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon in May. I will probably run the Old Rip and Wags & Whiskers 5Ks again as well, although I might look around for some different races. I wish there were some 10K races that were in a nice driving distance from me, but so far the only one I know if is the same day as my HM in May and I'd rather do the HM. As far as running goes I want to keep myself in HM shape. Right now I've been running 4 times a week with 5-6 miles on the weekdays and usually 10 miles or so on Sunday. I really like that too. Although with the cold weather I will probably drop my weekday mileage a little during the winter. I also plan to make sure that I eat enough to stay in my 5 pound maintenance range. The last 3 months I've been a little lower than the range and I think it is because my mileage went up but my intake stayed about the same. But all in all I'm happy with my weight where it is, I just don't want to lose any more.
Good luck on your race @Avidkeo (or hope it went well - these time differences sometimes get me). It looks like a really cool race!
Congrats to your son and his team on the State Championship @7lenny7!5 -
in for 1 indoor + 1 outdoor + 1 long run per week, excepting Thanksgiving but hey, it could totally happen5

I’m going to have to ponder this. I’ve been in the Fitbit platform for many years just as a walker. I upgraded to a Fitbit with a HR sensor in April and was still finishing up c25k at that time. I’ve been watching my cardio fitness score on Fitbit improve as I’ve continued to train (and continued to lose weight.). But now that I’m training more seriously I’ve been considering Garmin. I want the cadence that Fitbit doesn’t track. But I don’t want to give up being competitive with my sister on the Fitbit platform. So far, sibling competitiveness has outweighed the Garmin features. But if the Fitbit platform changes in a way that makes it no longer fun to crush my sister’s step goal, I’m out.

@avidkeo - Good luck with your relay and have fun!!
@pastorvincent - personally I would take an Uber from the finish to get to the start if the race doesn't provide any transportation. That serves 2 purposes - a) you don't have to get so cold walking and b) you don't have to go so early. If you don't have an old throw away jacket or sweatshirt like @Teresa502 mentioned I would use a large trash bag. It is amazing how warm they will keep you and they keep the wind out.4 -

Hmm an uber. Maybe. But it might be surge pricing or whatever it is called. It is like a 25 min or so walk. There is a shuttle from Finish to start, but it will not start running until about an hour after the race starts. I wish they had just set up a loop like any reasonable race so that start/finish were the same or at least close.2 -
@Avidkeo Cool race! Good luck, you go this:)
@7lenny7! Congratulations to your son, way to go! P.S. I get tired and in jaw dropping awe at your race schedule.
11/1 6.2 Miles
Started Nov great. Was in shorts and tank yesterday and long tights and half zip and gloves today. A temp drop of over 30 degrees from yesterday (73F at start) and today (41F at start). Will taper I'm sure for the week as I fly out tomorrow. Hoping to get at least 5K on Sunday for @MobyCarp run. They do have a board walk about 1.2 miles, so I can do that a 2 or 3 times hopefully! And back in shorts and tank! HA.

Maybe! That sinkhole is ON THE RACE ROUTE. In fact, it is pretty close to the finish line.1 -
I had posted this in October but then realized..... today is November....
Good morning! This week has been so busy!!!!!!! Work has been nuts, kids have been nuts, prepping for Halloween for kids has been nuts - I haven't run since last Saturday! Technically, I did not meet my October goal and it is because this week killed me, but if you go by averages and the other weeks where I went over my goal by adding additional runs each week, then I smashed the October goal. It's a matter of perspective and I'm happy with the outcome. I'm going to stick to my current 1 indoor/ 1 outdoor run per week for November and adding a long run each weekend.
The past two days I have had SIGNIFICANT problems with my insides. I honestly have no idea what's happening - nothing like this has ever really happened to me before - but yesterday and the day before it felt like my insides were on fire in my abdomen and I swelled up like a balloon. Both days I ate a ton of sugar. Yesterday, I woke up fine and it started after I ate a bunch of mini almond joys. Then I had chili for lunch. Nothing helped - I have tums, rolaids, pepto, and NOTHING was working. I even walked for miles with the kids to trick or treat last night and that didn't even help.... My fiance says, "Oh well it could be an ulcer," while I'm thinking, "actually let's just hope it's indigestion???" Any thoughts or insight? Today, all I've had is coffee and a gluten free multigrain sandwich, one slice of cheese, 1 tablespoon of mayo, and 2 oz sliced turkey. My guts feel like they want to start burning, but so far so good.
also - - - - -- - - I REGISTERED FOR THE 2020 ROCK N ROLL MARATHON IN NASHVILLE! So funny and annoying how I get all amped up and say, "i'm doing this thing," but then when it is time to actually put money toward it and commit to it, I start thinking, "wellllllll 26 miles in another city DOES seem really FAR and like A LOT of work......"
I decided to stop second guessing myself, commit to the thing, and just do it. Here's to hoping I don't actually have an ulcer...9
