Camaramandy648 wrote: »Those "technical" photos make my heart swell. I think trail running is my niche for sure. It's so fun and interesting and challenging. It's also filled with experiences that one only gets if they actually go out and do the thing.
To answer the cross-training question - I lift. Usually three times per week, unless it's a weird week where I get almost nothing done. I think it definitely helps my endurance.
I didn't lift last night because I was still so sore from Saturday. I am supposed to run tonight, but I'll have to see how my quads feel. I am still pretty sore from the long run Saturday, still. I hope I can get out to get it done. Really, I hope my legs are up to it.
I haven't ordered a running vest, which I really need to get done - I got so thirsty Saturday that I legit drank the water which I found out yesterday, one should NOT drink from that particular location. It's called Slaughterpen and I guess they call it that because it used to be a slaughterhouse and the water is all waste water - from the waste water treatment plant nearby????? What in the literal heck. My boss was so shocked when I was showing him the picture of the spring and said, "You DRANK that?" And I said, "well, yeah. I was thirsty."
I don't know if I want a vest or more of a camelbak and I certainly am not spending $150 on it. What's your go to for this? I already know I don't like the handhelds. I ran with a water bottle recently and I Hated it. I always feel like everything has to be exactly right - a specific way and a specific feel - or the whole run is off. Even Saturday, I stopped at the running store near my house for a headband because I had some baby bangs that I could feel while I was running and it was driving me insane......
Anyway, happy running! I love reading all of your posts so much!
Nearly as bad was my drinking from a small stream in Pennsylvania and later finding a dead deer laying in the water about 100 yards upstream from where I drank.
I was a lot younger then...6 -
@greenolivetree Congratulations to your husband. That's quite an accomplishment.
@polskagirl01 WTG! Congratulations! That's amazing!
I probably need to start doing some strength training too, but I can barely find the time to do the running I want to do right now. Maybe in the coming year that is something I will work on.4 -
I missed several pages of posts. I read through them all but didn't take notes so I'm not going to try to respond individually, but congrats to those of you who raced. Healing to those of you who are recovering.

I've been busy with Spartan racing in Florida, meetings and walking around NYC, and a whole host of planes, trains, and automobiles the past few days.
Friday I flew down to Tampa and quickly soaked up as much Florida as I could by heading to the beach, eating a grouper sandwich and key lime pie, and having a delicious fruity drink while watching the sunset over the gulf.
Saturday I drove to the middle of the state for the Central Florida Beast Spartan race - 13+ miles (my Garmin clocked 14.59) and 30+ obstacles basically on a cattle ranch with associated rough cow pasture terrain. It was a pretty tough day with some successes (rope climb and spear throw - yay!) and quite a few failures. Especially after I tore a couple of big flaps of skin off my right hand where I had callouses. I got it bandaged when we saw a medical truck but then I could barely grip with that hand so lots of things did not go well after that. Many burpees were done. I also fell a couple of times and have a serious quantity of bruises all up and down my arms and legs from various walls and what not. This one definitely left me feeling beaten up. Total time was 5 hrs 16 minutes, which was a couple of hours faster than the last beast I did back in April = but that one was on a mountain. I think I did not fuel enough for this one either and I was really dragging the last third or so of the race.
All that said, it was fun and I felt pretty proud to have accomplished my 8th Spartan of the year, finishing a double trifecta (sprint, super and beast distances x 2). I ran it with my team and while we separated out some, a few of us would group back up at each obstacle and make sure we were all doing okay and helping each other as needed. I also got some great help from strangers, including one guy who saved me from a potentially serious fall on top of a very slippery wall. I love all the people that are willing to help and encourage along the way in these races, it's a real community.
I drove back to Tampa after the race and had to fly out early the next morning to get to NYC for a work meeting on Sunday and Monday. I was barely keeping my eyes open during the presentations, I was so tired. I managed to make it through and even did some walking around NYC to see the tree at Rockefeller center and the holiday market at Bryant Park. And I ate a lot of fantastic food with absolutely no guilt. Then Monday late afternoon I took the train from Manhattan to JFK airport (proud of myself for managing this) and then flew home where I crawled into bed immediately.
Today I had an early appointment and was not very productive, and then I had a retirement party to go to, which was lovely but exhausting. I'm feeling bruised and run down, and have come down with a cold, so I'm now dosed up on Nyquil and heading to bed. I'm glad to have nothing scheduled in the morning tomorrow. More than that, I'm glad that my race season is over and I am taking some time to recover and think about what I want to do next. Before this race I was a bit sad that it was the last one of the year, but now I'm very happy to not have anything major on the calendar.9 -
@katharmonic man sounds like you really had a time of it. Good job on pushing through and finishing! A break to recover definitely is an excellent idea.2
-
Holy smokes @katharmonic! You have been busy! You deserve to take the rest of the year off 😀
Take time to recover and enjoy the holidays.1 -
I haven't gotten any running all week due to *kitten* air quality. Hit the gym instead. It finally blew over this morning and I'm hoping to get a run in tonight.Camaramandy648 wrote: »katharmonic wrote: »Friday I flew down to Tampa and quickly soaked up as much Florida as I could by heading to the beach, eating a grouper sandwich and key lime pie, and having a delicious fruity drink while watching the sunset over the gulf.4

@katharmonic Wow, Great job! Now definitely get some rest. Just the traveling you mentioned can be exhausting. And you threw in a beastly 5+-hour effort on top of that! Amazing1

No run today, it was sleeting plus we’re recovering from yesterday when we went ice skating, or rather “glice” skating, at the Christmas village. First of all let me say Glice (artificial ice) is some male cow kitten. Doesn’t allow you to glide forward, but doesn’t have grip when you push off sideways either. I’ve never ice skated but I used to be pretty good at inline skating so I have some idea of what it should be like, and my husband does know how to ice skate and assured me, that was not it. It might have been better had the ring been dry so the “self lubricating surface” worked as advertised, but it had rained and the rink was covered in puddles, and the rental skates were very dull. Just slick enough to be dangerous but not slick enough to skate. A number of children of various sizes were also trying hard and having no luck at skating. My husband spent the majority of his time on the ice hoisting up small people who had fallen.
Young girl, trying to figure out what a grown up lady was doing there: “How come you don’t fall down?” (Which I admit made me unique at that moment.) Well, I used to rollerblade, and it’s sort of similar. She says authoritatively, “It should be the same, but this is harder.”
Anyway I should have said, “Just give me a minute,” because I did eventually fall, and bruised my hip pretty good. Hopefully it will feel okay when running tomorrow.
We left at the same time the aforementioned young girl left, as she was saying to her mother, “You should skate!” Mom replied, “I’m good,” with deep sarcasm. Very overweight, clearly considered it hilarious that she might voluntarily do a physical activity. I used to be that person and it made me sad for her.
It was walk through the lights night, when the Christmas lights are closed to cars and the trails are open, so we took a brisk 5 mile walk, since it wasn’t a running day for us. We also visited the petting zoo. I didn’t get to ride a camel since the camel ride isn’t open on walk day. But I did touch a white alpaca, which is the softest animal in the known universe, fed a trio of Coatimundis which are basically a fancy South American raccoon, offered a horn scratch to a dwarf zebu who was completely over it, and was licked by a lemur. I love meeting strange animals but I can’t help having guilt about the ethics behind petting zoos. Pretty sure the lemurs (there were three) were very lonely, bored, stressed out creatures. My husband communed with one and it made tiny meeping noises at him. Did you know they also make a meow sound like cats?
I also met this guy, who had his very own piece of straw like a hayseed from an old timey picture:We had a good time and got in a bunch of exercise, and if my hip allows me to run tomorrow I don’t even regret the glice experiment. You can’t learn what you don’t like until you try it, right?10 -
Well done @katharmonic after a tough session.
Started running last night aiming for a gap in the rain and had a pain in my shin, walked instead - it rained at about the I would have finished the run as if punishing me for not running. Still got the pain this morning so gently does it.3 -
@rheddmobile That alpaca is so cute and looks happy to have visitors.0

Clear, 20 degrees F, and a little wind out of the southwest that was OK at my back but no fun in my face. For some reason I was hunting for oxygen at about the 5k mark. Oh, well.

i didn't. i walked while making dinner. i got lazy. tonight. even if it's going to be close to 0f. it's going to happen.
@mbaker566 well a walk is better than nothing. But not as good as a run. Make the run happen tonight. Have you tried running in the mornings or at lunch time instead of leaving it until the evening? I very rarely miss runs, and I think that's down to the fact that I do them first thing in the morning. If I had to run in the evenings I don't think I would ever actually find the energy or motivation to run!
I've been joking about almost becoming a jogger this morning, but I'm actually pretty freaked out about it. Bear in mind here I used to do my Wednesday runs up the track beside the river, but my husband hates me running up there as it's a little bit remote and he's scared something will happen to me. So, I've started doing my mid week 5 mile run on anout and back route that goes along the side of the highway by the beach.
There's a huge rock at one point with a lookout point over the sea and a little parking area about half way along. As I approached I saw a white car parked by the rock. As I got nearer I noted the wing mirror and headlight on the driver's side were broken, then as I got even closer I saw that there was a stone embedded in the windscreen, all the other windows had been smashed and it had no number plates. No sign of anyone inside or nearby. I guess I assumed someone had stolen it, parked it there and trashed it. I did briefly think about reporting its presence as I ran on, but assumed (there's a busy, two-lane highway literally 5 metres away and it's in clear view) someone in authority would notice it. Muttered to myself as I went on about what is the world coming to, vandalism, crime, etc etc etc.
When I passed on my way back, there was one man walking about near the car and another on a motorbike. They moved along the edge by the railings and stopped and stood looking down the cliff as I went by. Again, thought no more of it.
Not long before lunch I saw on the local newspaper's Facebook that a man was found dead down on the rocks at that exact place. It was reported at 'about 9am'... I ran from 8.20 to 9.25, and I saw the men when I was about 3/4 of the way through. At first they thought he had fallen off, but then they found bullet wounds.
I'm shocked because if I hadn't seen the car on my way out and stayed on the concrete path beside the crash barrier, I would have been running along the dirt path beside the railing and if I'd looked down I would probably have been the one to see the body first. I'm also shocked because stuff like that isn't supposed to happen here, but this is like the 5th shooting in as many weeks. What is the world coming to?

@eleanorhawkins OMG! That is so scary! I would be so freaked out. I hope you are ok. I know you are physically, but I hope you are emotionally.1
-
@katharmonic WOW! You continue to amaze me. I hope your hand is okay. I would have probably given up at that point. I'm such a wimp sometimes.
@rheddmobile Sorry your experience with the glice was not good, but good of you for giving it a try. I hope your hip is okay today. The walk through the Christmas lights sounds like fun and I'm glad you got to go to the petting zoo. Sounds like they had a lot of interesting animals there.
@Teresa502 We had almost exactly the same weather here this morning. I took a walk back in the fields to enjoy the snow, but haven't run yet.
@polskagirl01 Love the frosty pictures.
@eleanorhawkins Oh my! That is so scary. I'm sure you are really freaked out by that experience. It's so sad that those types of things are happening more and more frequently. I hope you are okay.1 -
@katharmonic Awesome job on your final Spartan of the year! You are a beast!
@rheddmobile That alpaca is adorable! I am so glad you were there to be a role model for that young girl. It is quite likely that she was surprised to see you skating because she has been told that grown ups don't skate, or that skating is for kids. She probably needs to see some healthy adults taking part in some good physical activities. I have only tried ice skating once and it was very difficult. I was pretty fat back then too so I don't know if I would be any better at it now, but I'd have to drive about 90-100 miles to ice skate, so I'll probably never do it again anyway.1 -
@eleanorhawkins OMG! That is so scary! I would be so freaked out. I hope you are ok. I know you are physically, but I hope you are emotionally.
Thanks. I'm not sure. I think I'm ok but the more I think about it the less sure I am. Guess tomorrow I'll go run round the town centre where I could be hit by a car or pushed off a pavement but am less likely to be abducted or find a dead body or witness a murder.6 -
i have @eleanorhawkins
i used to be a morning runner but now that hypersomnia is active in my sleep cycle right now, it's hard for me to run in the morning and be safe to drive. if i run in the evenings, and can't physically stay awake, i can just go to bed.
while i'm not a morning person. i do prefer running in the morning to get it done with. i will have to make the switch soon to do my longer runs so i am not running around the city at midnight.
can't do lunch runs.
1) i sweat too much, no showers, only 30 min which is only 20 min after changing, blah blah blah excuses
2) hypersomnia will make me fall asleep in the afternoon.
i was on medication for it but it was making my anxiety sky high. which led to me needing more medication to manage that. with all that is wrong with my body (behcets, myalgia, acid reflux, hypersomnia, depression, anxiety), i really to to minimize the amount of medications needed so that when i'm older i don't have a tolerance when things are worse.6 -

December Goal: 100 Miles
12/1: 10.05 miles
12/3: 6.25 miles
12/4: 6.05 miles
12/5: 6.25 miles
12/8: 10.10 miles
12/9: 6.05 miles
12/11: 6.10 miles
50.85/100 miles completed
I ran 6 miles this morning. It was cold. 31°F feels like 27°F. Luckily it was dry and there wasn't much wind so it wasn't too bad. I was glad that I switched my Monday rest day to yesterday. We didn't get any real snow yesterday (there was a little slush on the windshields) but it was raining and hovering right at freezing when I got up so I think I would have been miserable if I had run. But today was actually kind of nice. It was clear and the moon was bright. I put a drawstring in my long tights so they fit better and I wore sleeves and a jacket and was mostly comfortable. Except for my hands. I wore two pairs of gloves and my fingers were still numb. I had to change the batteries in my noxgear vest. I've had it about a month and just today had to change them so I think that was pretty good. I felt bad though because after I changed them I was carrying them until I got to a trash bin. When I went to throw them away I only had one in my hand. I guess I dropped the other two and my numb hands didn't notice. I feel kind of bad about littering but if I see them on my next run I'll pick them up. I do think I am going to get some rechargeable batteries though. That way I won't have to worry about changing them during a run.

then the dogs become an issue. it's about 13 miles home. which for me atm is three hours. and i'd be asking the dogs to hold it for over 12 hours. now it's at least 9 hours
it would be easier if i didn't work 2 jobs.
you had good advice. morning running is nice because life rarely gets in the way. i just have to start the habit again.4 -
