I finally got a short run in. It did not feel very good but I took easy and just wanted to keep moving and loosen up a little. My cold has gotten somewhat better, less in the head more in the chest, but running didn't seem to make it worse so that was good. I sat in the sauna for a few minutes before and for a while after and that definitely felt good.
I ran into my running coach while I was at the gym and he gave me a little talk about not straying too far from my running base, so I've promised to start showing my face and get back to the group workouts next week. It will be good accountability for me as it's really tempting to just stop running for a while, and I know I'll be sorry if I do that and have to build back up again.5 -

Yikes!
I kinda did the same thing and run mine in February! Good luck to us both (I'll need it)!1 -
SO TRUE STORY:
I am at my desk thinking about things and stuff when my outdoor cameras start going off. So I open the live view, expecting to see deer, and see a man walking around from house to house looking in windows with a flashlight. Cameras are all in infrared mode cause it is well past sunset so could not tell much about him (got a good shot of his face on my Ring though)
So I grab my jacket and my concealed carry and go outside to see what is up. I really was not expecting any trouble, but I just wanted anyone snooping around to know they were being watched. Had I expected trouble I would have had Kristi on the phone with 911.
Turns out it was a FedEx guy lost trying to read house numbers. So I go back inside and then I hear police sirens. I am like "someone called the cops on the poor guy." And sure enough, the cop car came up the street calling out something completely inaudible.
My son came upstairs at this point and was like "maybe it is a parade" and I was like "One cop car a parade does not make."
I started to head out to see if I could tell the cop all things were fine when a fire truck came with its lights all on.
Turns out it WAS a parade. Santa was on the firetruck! I guess whatever the cop called out had to do with Santa. We will never know!9 -
@PastorVincent They need a laugh button! That's hilarious! Was it just one police car, one firetruck, and Santa? I mean, I guess that is all you need for a parade, but there is usually a little more to it. BTW, I'm glad the FedEx guy wasn't arrested and that it wasn't someone more sinister.1

Yeah, my town is small and not rich so just 1 police car and one fire truck.4 -

I love this.
I’m really glad the FedEx guy is fine!
That’s a great story! And a sweet parade!1 -

Run at least 4 5k races - Completed 8-31.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k - Nope...
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year - Completed 12-7.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen - Completed 9-28
Mid 30s F today with just a little wind. Started out in a light rain mixed with a little wet snow and finished up in a light snow that was just turning the grassy surfaces white and making the wooden foot bridges slippery. So I'll let myself feel 55 percent more hard core.
@mbaker566 Did I miss your run report?

Continue a 5k regimen.
Train better.

Had my trail 5k today! It was fun
The kids had their races first. Son is getting better at pacing himself, had a race plan and stuck to it for 2nd place in AG. The girl is having fun and had a goal of not being last, which she met by coming in 2nd-to-last Both were happy.
My strategy for the 5k was to negative split but work hard the whole time, as there were no excuses to take it easy today. I'm feeling strong & healthy, the weather & trails were fine, and there wasn't a super-high turnout, which makes it easier to place higher and move yourself up in the rankings (which actually for me don't mean anything except a point of reference to compare to previous years, as I have no chance at a podium in this series). I started in the appropriate wave but was pretty much catching and passing people the whole time. It helps motivate me to go faster. It was hard, but I was still enjoying myself. I wasn't paying attention to overall time, other than checking my watch to make sure my pace was within my very general goal range, and focused mainly on breathing and effort. It works well for me. I ended up just 3 seconds away from my course-PR that I set in October of 2017! Sounds good to me! 11/21 in AG.
Now I'm gonna take a nap so I don't go sign up for a bunch of ultras or something, due to runner's high or post-race inspirationViews of the trail and my feet (I was bored while waiting for the second kid's race to start)
And the shirt! My son saw it and said, "the whole forest is burning!", and then I realized that it does kinda look like smog... oh well, I'm sure they were going for a nice morning mist/fog, but it IS pretty accurate. So far this winter though, air quality hasn't been too bad.8 -

@polskagirl01 Yay! Sounds like a great race and you did fantastic. Congratulations to your son as well. I understand your daughter's mind set. That was my goal on my first race ever, which was a 10K Trail race I was not properly trained for. I achieved that goal - I think 3rd from last. So, I was ecstatic. It does give you hope. I know someone has to be last. I just don't ever want it to be me. What is the animal on the back of the shirt?3

Congrats on your trail 5k race @polskagirl01! And great job to your kids too!
@Tramboman I think you got to at least 60% more hardcore if it turned into snow during the run.
Rain turning to snow is the forecast for my 5k tonight too. "It's a Wonderful Run" starts at 4:40 pm on the bridge that is supposed to have inspired the one in the movie It's a Wonderful Life, in the town that was supposedly the inspiration for Bedford Falls in the movie. It's a really fun, super crowded holiday run. I hope the rain doesn't put too much of a damper on it - I know I'm not exactly eager to get out there but I hope the crowd will show up anyway. The town puts on a great event with so much crowd support (and handing out lots of goodies, including shots of alcohol which I will definitely be partaking if offered. Medicinely, of course).
I went axe throwing last night with my students who work for me and it was so much fun. Highly recommend if you haven't tried it. Really gets the aggression out. I also got to enjoy a red blend wine in a can that was sold to me with a "50/50" love it/hate it recommendation by the person tending the bar (the selections were very minimal - it's not a full bar, as people are hurling axes there). I would say the first few sips I was in the hate it category, but by the end I was sold. And now in two paragraphs I've made myself sound like I have a drinking problem, so I should probably wrap this up and go out and walk the dog in the rain (which is still 50% more hardcore, right?).10 -

Double yay for FUN!!!!!
I still worry a little bit about finishing last, but someone has to - or the race could never be over.3 -
Congrats on your 5k race @polskagirl01! So glad to see kids racing. Great job getting them interested in running early in life (as opposed to me starting at 50).2

Great job to you and the kiddos @polskagirl01!1

I ran the Dream Run for Hope House a local organization that supports abused women and children. This was their first race and was in honor of a local lady who was killed by her boyfriend in her front yard. They had a small child and she was pregnant with their second.
The field of participants was small and a mix of runners and walkers. It was very well organized. The course was a flat two-loops through downtown Kingsport. It had been raining up until the start so I threw my rain jacket on when I got out of the car. Turned out it stopped right before the race began. I shed my jacket after the first mile tying it around my waist.
I finished in 30:37 according to my watch which measured the course at 3.22 miles. My average pace surprised me at 9:31. I haven’t run that fast in over a year so it gave me a much needed boost. I finished second in my age group.

For some reason I couldn’t load photos earlier from my phone. Forgot to mention post race there was water and a hot chocolate bar with lots of goodies to add in along with donuts and biscuits.0

Great race @Teresa502 ! Very impressive pace! Congrats on the 2nd place in you AG! Have you decided if you are doing the Pioneer 5 miler next week or not?
Speaking of the race next Saturday, I looked at the forecast and there is over a 30% chance that it will be raining. So, do you run a rainy road race in your "normal" running shoes or do you wear your trail running shoes? Right now, I am shoe poor and only have road running shoes. I really hate to get them wet. Does that show my novice-ness? Certainly shows that I am not "hard core" yet.2 -

I second the great race, @Teresa502!
Run in what you've got, @quilteryoyo. Shoes will dry overnight.3 -
Awesome job @Teresa502!! Fantastic pace and 2nd place in AG is so cool!
@quilteryoyo I don't change shoes for rain in a road race. Make sure you have good socks though! Smartwool or something else wicking.
That being said I'm debating wearing my trail shoes for tonight just because they are Gortex and I'm a little worried about the rain/snow combo and the amount of time standing around with wet feet, but I don't think I will because they aren't the most comfortable for road running.4 -
So my goal for Dec. was to finish the 3 marathons signed up already. The tendonitis seems to be improving, but I may have been running on it wierd. My ankle has been swollen for a couple weeks and I am starting to wonder if I have a stres fracture.
For today's marathon, I wrapped for the ankle rather than tape for the tendon. IDK how this happened, but I ended up with a PR!! I'm very excited!9 -
Congratulations @Teresa502 on your 2nd place AG! That's awesome!
Way to gut it out with your sore ankle and tendonitis to complete a marathon and even get a PR! I don't know how you do it!!!
8 miles for me this afternoon. That makes a grand total of 8 miles for the week 🤬
Running once a week isn't going to cut it. Can't make any gains that way. I should know by now that resting doesn't fix my leg pains. I did some scraping the last two days, and that actually seems to help (although extremely painful 😥). Have some bruising, but apparently that is a good thing. Will try to continue that every day for a while and hopefully the pain and bruising will subside. I AM going to run 2019K this year!

In general, run road races in road shoes, and trail races in trail shoes. The biggest exception is snow. If the road is snowy, then trail shoes are often a good idea.
As for shoes getting wet. This is fine. Let them get wet BUT MAKE SURE YOUR SOCKS ARE HIGH QUALITY. Wet socks will give you blisters fast. When my shoes get wet, I put them on a shoe dryer like this one and make sure they are completely dry before going back in my back. You can leave them out to air dry too but it will take a lot longer. It will not hurt them, but the longer they sit wet the more likely they are to develop an odor.

A PR through injury is an indicator of conditioning plus grit.5 -

@Scott6255 Glad your leg is doing okay and congratulations on running 2019K this year! That's amazing.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner Way to push through the marathon with an injury AND get a PR! Fantastic!! Congratulations!
Thanks for the comments on my shoe question. I guess I need to get some good socks. So far, I have been running in cotton ones. They won't be good when wet. Also, my dryer has a thing you can put inside to set shoes on so they don't tumble and dry them. I suppose that would work if my running shoes get wet - just make sure it isn't on high heat.
Ran two times this week and played tennis one day.
