Karen-i know! So sad . Just shows how life changes so quickly.
Was a productive day yet lazy one......Husband cleaned up his toy closet. He fixed a few problems in attic when putting stuff up there. He only asked for my help a few times! Carpets cleaned and vacuumed. Last load of laundry in dryer. Paperwork all organized, shredded and filed. Property taxes paid, plates ordered for his cars, ordered a few other things online. I even started on tax stuffs! Yay! Watched lots of love it or list it followed by Holmes to holmes. Time for sleep.
Hugs!
Loves!
Cheers!

With everything that's been going on the last couple of weeks, I haven't been sleeping well at all - sometimes only getting a couple hours. Last night I slept straight through the night, no getting up to use the bathroom (normally I'm up at least once), no waking up worrying about how we're going to handle this or that thing, just sleep. That, combined with a good bike workout first thing this morning has me feeling like I could take on the world today .

Yep ... a good sleep + a good bicycle ride or a run is a great combination.grandmallie wrote: »Katla lol I dont have a ton of vises but tea is one of them I have no fewer than 20 different boxes of tea lol chamomile included....
Me too. I like one or two caffeinated teas, but drink a lot of different un-caffeinated teas in the evenings.

I’m still coughing. Don’t tell me to go to the ER or the doctor’s, I have been and have been on antibiotics twice, gotten a steroid injection, and have an inhaler. Vince wonders if it might not be an allergy to something. Since we’ll be in FL for a few weeks, that’ll be a pretty good look-see. If I don’t cough after a while, maybe it’s time to see an allergist. Vince says I’ve been coughing since this summer, but I think it was just after I went to the MD for my annual physical and got my flu shot
Michele NC about to be in FL
Read back through your posts in threads here and you'll find out.

Slept well.
Hope to get a bit of writing done today.
Proud if myself for saying no to my son's request for DH to 'tutor' Max, even informally. He rang us last night , but I told him I wasn't happy about it. We'll still enjoy our 1 to 1s, but keep it just a fun thing.

Thank you so much for the good wishes/prayers for my sister in law. She had her brain scan yesterday, should get the results when she sees her oncologist on Tuesday, so keeping everything crossed for good news.
Had a lovely coffee morning with two friends last week, I really needed the break. It was good to see them and have a laugh! We are going to try and arrange a monthly coffee morning seeing as we are all retired.
My mums Blue Badge needs renewing. Good grief they don't make it easy! I thought it would be a simple form to say that nothing has changed since last year, but no. They need a photograph, a copy of her marriage certificate and a utilities bill with her name on it. Not sure if I can go to the office in town to show them or if it has to be done on-line I need to double check.
Love to all

Margaret, thanks for suggesting the core exerice of pulling in your belly button towards your back. I definitely should work on my core, and this is an easy one to remember. Good idea about standing on one foot when waiting in a queue too, I'll practice both of these.4

Home again!
After I submitted my assignment on Friday, I took about an hour to pack and we were on the road!!
It was not a relaxing weekend ... I'm tired! But it was good to get away and good to run the cycling event.
On the way home today we stopped and cycled 20 km.
I'm unpacking and thinking about taking down my Christmas decorations.

Do you prepare steel cut oats or overnight oats? Curious about your oatmeal.

Viv praying that SIL’s scan reveals an easily repairable issue and that your mother gets relief from sciatica SOON. As for squats, if it hurts your knees STOP. Take some time to build some strength by holding onto a sink and pushing your bottom as far behind you as you can until just before your knees ache. Hold for a few breaths, come back up and repeat. More important to push your hips and butt back, than to bend your knees, tho’ they will have to flex a little. After two weeks you’ll be surprised at how much more your knees will bend without pain. Had to google “Blue Badge” ah, a handicapped parking permit. Looks like you can apply on line, but WOW it could take your council 12 weeks to make a decision. Sure hope that’s just for new ones, not renewals!

SuziQ those system conversions make me VERY grateful I was able to retire from systems support when I did. Shortly thereafter the company changed OS, email and industry specific systems. :noway: Ditto staying away from the dirty dozen. Even in remote Brookings, organic apples (and cucumbers seasonally) aren’t that much more expensive than conventional at Freddie’s or Grocery Outlet. SMH at our food regulations, believe EUs are much stricter? Here there is no requirement to label irradiated or GMO food, are either even allowed in Europe?

I've been trying to figure out how to post this clip of my Bailey dog which was taken just one week before he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. He had stage 4 heart failure and herniated disc that initially nearly paralyzed his back legs, but look how great he was doing just one week before he deteriorated. I loved that little dog. He was my buddy. The sassy little Yorkie is my little Molly, the younger of our 2 girl Yorkies.

Here is Bailey one week before; you can see his rear quarters are a little wobbly, but look at him go! heart failure and all. What a great dog.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
Welcome to those who are new, help us get to know you! We're glad you're here. Come the end of the month, Barbiecat will create a February thread for us to start anew.
Heather - Proud of you for sticking to your guns on your DH tutoring Max, if that's what you both want. And the Burns Night festivities looked like great fun for all of you.
Viv - Thinking about you and your family. Hope it all comes out right in the end.
Machka - You honestly never cease to amaze.
Rori - Thinking about you. No reason, just am. Hope all's well.
Barbara - Exactly. Moderation is nowhere in my lexicon... and I've never done "just a little" of anything in my life unless I hated doing it or was doing it grudgingly. All in or all out.
Speaking of which, now they're saying that the tests that showed that human willpower is a limited resource were wrong . Apparently, they now believe if you think your willpower will run out, then it will, and if you think it won't, then it doesn't. (https://www.inc.com/nir-eyal/distraction-willpower-best-work.html) I'm getting to where I don't believe anything that's published because of stuff like this.
I'd genuinely rather believe that willpower is an inexhaustible resource, and now that I've said that, I realize that I have always believed it is limited and finite. Good grief, I hate it when I'm human.
Off to the races - I did ten minutes on the elliptical yesterday, and am, because I'm exercising MODERATION, dang it, going to go get on it for eleven minutes today. Maybe I should just rearrange my mind on being all-in on moderation, and I'll like it better?
Edit: After three days on the Wellbutrin, was able to sleep through the night, and bumped up to the full dose yesterday, with one dose in the morning and one at night, and slept just fine, so there's that. Full benefit can take as little as a week, or as much as six weeks.
Love y'all,

Hubs and I have had a relaxing weekend. We met and old friend and his wife for dinner Saturday night. It was a fun night talking about old times and laughing. Last night our neighbor texted that he was cooking dinner so we went over there and had dinner with 2 other neighbor/friends. We all bring something to go with the main he cooks. Since it was a small group, we all fit around the table instead of being scattered around. We laughed our butts off, it was a good evening.
Now I need to get my day started and figure out what the heck I'm packing and then make sure we can both fit everything into out carry-ons so we don't have to check a bag.

Karen in VA ~ Yes! Bailey was such a love! That's what makes me so sad about my Pom. During his last week, he had moments where he looked like his perky self and then he would get sick and just lay there. Just makes me want to cry all over again.
The kittens are so cute! I know your DnL's family hates to part with their cuteness.

didn't workout yesterday, just stuff around the house, didn't add anything to the calorie count.
kirby had quit the gym since he doesn't go nearly as often as i do. he goes on his days off and every other weekend when he's off work and we go together. we've decided we are not going to join a gym when we retire. we're active enuf and we know what we need to do to stay healthy.
kirby is going to ask the MS organizers if taking a dog (yogi) on the ride is permitted., of course in a pulled trailer. we'll see.7 -

Amber: I hope JR feels better soon.
Karen and Kylia: It is difficult to imagine that a helicopter crash killed Kobe and Gianna Bryant. I wonder what happened with the helicopter. I imagine authorities will be trying to figure that out. If the engine stalled, a helicopter has no way to glide to the ground. It just falls out of the sky. Soo sad.
Machka and Allie: DH likes black tea but I have never liked it. I was brought up on a little coffee with a lot of sugar and milk. As time went by I dropped the milk due to lactose intolerance. Later I dropped the sugar, too. Now I drink coffee with stevia, or herbal tea. Peppermint is my favorite herbal tea.
Viv: Keeping my fingers crossed for your SIL. :flowerforyou:
Karen in VA: The foster kitties are soooo cute! I like the black one on the left, with the white whiskers and paws.
NYKaren: I hope the neurologist is able to help heal your hand.
Barbara: My visit to the stable did turn into a ride with my friend Karen. We had planned it in advance. I was surprised to find my teacher with her work friends when I arrived. I can say that the woman riding Arrow had much better skills than I do. She could get him to do so much more. It did feel awkward to arrive and find them all there. They left & I rode with my friend Karen as planned.
Karen in VA: I am happy that you have wonderful video to remember Bailey. I love your photo of the dog on a bike sidecar
I had an awkward day at the stable yesterday, but ended up having a nice ride with my friend Karen. We haven’t ridden together since last summer. The awkwardness revolves around my teacher who did not offer me a lesson this week. She and her work friends were there and having a great time together when I arrived for my planned ride with my friend Karen. I was surprised and had a few minutes of feeling awkward. I had a great time riding with Karen. I hope it is something we can do again.

Managed to fit in some bonus afternoon exercise, rowing and biking, while watching EASY WAYS TO FEEL WELL. Total for today is 982 burn.
In the programme they were looking at increasing your gut microbiome by eating lots of veggies and improving stress by having a cold water shower or swim every morning. Both worked well.
They also tackled the workplace snacking problem and the issue of bringing treats in. Sniffing peppermint oil helped and making the treats harder to access. They also asked clients nicely not to bring in sweet gifts. Good results.
I did a good writing session this morning.

The latest news has been (and, who knows what is true) the conditions were horrible. There was terrible fog and 0 visibility. Even the police force grounded its helicopters. Apparently, they hit a mountain due to lack of visibility - TG, if this is true and no one knew what was happening and it was over in an instant.

Margaret, thanks for suggesting the core exerice of pulling in your belly button towards your back. I definitely should work on my core, and this is an easy one to remember. Good idea about standing on one foot when waiting in a queue too, I'll practice both of these.
Did the balance one while waiting at post offfice. For me it helps with the wait. Also with the pulling it the belly button to add to effectivenss is check your posture and blow out like you are blowing out of a straw. I learned this exercise from a nurse where the focus was posture. So this exercise can help with balance by building your core and also posture is when adding the of awarness your posture to it.3 -
Happy Monday! Even with all the stress eating and challenges last week, I still managed to lose 1#. Not much, but it's a start . I volunteered at a 5k/9k/9M race yesterday and even managed to get in 3 miles myself after my shift was over. It was a chilly but sunny morning. I'm actually surprised I made it to 3 miles. I haven't been able to get past 1-1/2 miles on the TM lately without my knee screaming at me. Yesterday, I felt a bit of a twinge towards the end but no real pain. My stride must be different when I'm on the TM.
Trying a new recipe in the crock pot today - jambalaya, using chicken breast and chicken sausage. DH isn't big on chicken sausage but I'm hoping with the spices in this, he won't really notice the difference. We'll see how it goes.
Have a lovely rest of your day!

Prior to my husband's accident, I didn't get the flu shot and although I'm sure I had measles in 2016, I didn't think about getting vaccinated for it just in case.
After his accident, while I was sitting in hospital with him, one day they informed me that they were going to give him a flu shot and strongly recommended that if I were going to keep coming in every day to see him, I should get one too. So I did. And we had flu shots again last winter and will this coming winter too.
Then just recently I got the MMR vax and the shingles vax (the one-dose variety as the 2-dose variety is banned in Australia).
We got a whole set of vaccinations in 2012 as we were preparing to travel the world ... tetanus, yellow fever, and the lot. So we'll be due for our next tetanus in 2022.
We want to keep up to date with vaccinations etc. because:
-- with my husband's severe TBI and epilepsy, and multitude of hospital visits, he could be at increased risk of catching something. And because he's not as mobile as he once was, it's harder to shake some of those things.
-- with my husband's situation, I need to remain as healthy as I can.
-- I go to university with thousands of students from all over Asia, so who knows what I'm being exposed to. In fact, I'm a bit concerned about the Coronavirus which you've probably all heard about. My university has issued a statement about it already and quite frankly, I'd rather not attend classes in person next month, but ...
https://www.who.int/westernpacific/emergencies/novel-coronavirus
-- I also take the bus which puts me in close quarters with people who are sneezing and snuffling all over the place.
-- I am allergic to several antibiotics. I'm wearing a medic alert bracelet now to list them and it can be hard for people like my dentist to find one I'm not allergic to. This puts me at risk if I do end up with some sort of infection.
-- I had rheumatic fever as a child which puts me at increased risk around the Streptococcus bacteria ... and with my allergies to antibiotics ...
In addition to vaccines, I also try to do what I can to keep us healthy.
-- Exercise every day
-- Eat a reasonable, fairly well-balanced diet with lots of fruit and veggies
-- Drink water
-- Keep our weight in the normal range or close to it
-- No drinking alcohol or smoking
-- Take vitamins and minerals
-- Get enough sleep (this one I struggle with a bit, but I have upped my sleep from about 6 hours a night to 7 hours a night, most nights)
-- Wash my hands with a basic soap several times a day, like after getting off the bus
-- Staying as far away as I can from anyone who appears to be ill!!
-- Getting regular checkups ... recently, I've had a couple heart tests, I do go for my mammograms regularly especially since they did discover a lump back in 2015 which I had biopsied (benign, thankfully), I see my gynaecologic-oncologist about once a year for a check on my precancer situation, I am trying to go to my dentist fairly regularly, I will be making an appointment to get my skin checked, and so on.
Some other tips:
https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/27-health-and-nutrition-tips
I want to do what I can to give us both the best chances possible of living a long and reasonably healthy life.
Machka in Oz
Great list, Machka. I would also add, as a reason to be vaccinated, that some people cannot be vaccinated. Those of us who can protect not only ourselves but others when we increase our odds of not getting a communicable disease which could be devastating to people with weak or compromised immune systems.

Good morning all.
The past couple weeks have been hectic. My mil died, (she had been in hospice for the past 4 months), so my son and I flew out to be with my husband and his kids. Fortunately, my husband got to see her before she died. He arrived less than 24 hours before she passed.
We had a nice time (is that possible? You know what I mean) with his kids and grandkids. The funeral was very nice. The church people were complimentary of my mil which spurred my husband to whisper to me, "I think they didn't really know her." She was not a nice person and was a horrible mother. Still, of course, my husband is having difficulty accepting that she is gone. Their relationship has been unhealthy since he was a child, but it was still a relationship that he doesn't have anymore. Near the end, when she could still manage it, she was calling him 10-12 times a day to complain about all kinds of things he couldn't fix. Now we wait to see what happens with her house. There is currently no lien on it. Do any of you who may have gone through this before, know when the state will put a lien on someone's house for medical care? She has been telling us for years that the lien was already in place, but it definitely is not. Wouldn't you know it, two of my husband's son's moved into the house less than two weeks before she died. They are, understandably, very nervous. My husband does not need this stress.
So sorry to hear about Kobe, his daughter, the pilot, and the other passengers.
I don't know if anyone responded to you Machka about the "trial." Impeachment trial. It has been amazing! (I know; I'm weird. I have listened every opportunity -- have it on right now.)
Many blessings to all of you.
