Hit my one year anniversary of logging in. Believe my food logs have been better than 90% accurate (some situations I have just had to guess). Have lost 24 lbs in the past year and feel pretty satisfied with where I am. Still working on best way to manage maintenance. I mainly just eat like before but don't worry about deficit as much. Still leave a slight cushion since not always positive about what it says for exercise calories.
Had good visit with son and his gf today. Ended up going to a sports bar and had ribs (hadn't had them for awhile). I at maybe a third of a full slab, son at a third. Brought remainder home for dinner. Also had some french fries. I was thinking I must have been eating more fries than I was aware of--and son informed me he had taken well over half of them since he knew I wouldn't eat them all!
Read a post on thread about coronavirus (maybe under general health board?) from someone in Italy. The thread has a lot of good natured discussion (and debate) about how serious to take things here. This poster said a couple of weeks ago they were all making fun of the fear, etc. Said now is a different story there and the situation is getting worse. I don't plan on getting paranoid about the whole thing, but I do hope there is a way to contain.
Off to sleep. I hate the time change and fully expect it to mess me up for few days.
Take care all,

This is a difficult time to visit friends and loved ones if you need to use public transport. It is hard to imagine that busses and trains have been adequately cleaned & sanitized. I suspect that wearing a hazmat suit on the bus would garner a LOT of attention, and not so sure it would be positive attention. :noway:

I keep sending messages to our metro company, but haven't had any satisfactory responses.

On a side note: Is anyone else irritated with the piechart at the bottom of our food diary?! Ugh! I have long known that this site doesn't differentiate between good carbs/ bad carbs and good fats/bad fats; but the pie chart feels like it is putting it right in my face and I keep thinking I need to do better, (which there is some room to make better choices on some days, lately). Is there a way to get rid of the pie chart?
KJ (Kelly)
I don't scroll down far enough to notice it. I only just discovered it the other day!

I woke up in the night worrying about the cruise and when to pull the plug. Took myself upstairs to read. Eventually I fell asleep, but was woken up by a thud. Went to the door to listen. Couldn't hear anything at all. Thought I must have dreamt it so went back to bed.
Not a good night at all. I think my difficult friend must have set me off. Very little sleep.
Came downstairs and made tea. Came up with it to find that DH had had one if his fainting turns in the night and that was the thud I had heard. He had collapsed in the bathroom, was out of it, and then crawled back to the bedroom and collapsed again on the floor.
He has done this on and off over the years. About once a year. It is a sudden drop in blood pressure when an older man urinates in the night. It can be caused by being dehydrated, but I'm not sure what happened last night as we did have our usual liquids during the day.
It shook him up quite a bit, but he hasn't got any bruises.
So not a good night for either of us.
This morning is blue sky.

Afterwards we had to stop by their house to pick something up. The funny thing is I have never been in their house. We have been friends about 5 years or so. My phone got left at home because the battery was dead, no magazine or book in truck. I add these details for a reason. When we got to their house, the wife says thank you and goes inside. My husband and her husband commence to talking and drinking. I was not dressed for walking (heels and no coat). An hour and 30 minutes later we finally headed home. I will say I cleaned out the console of the truck and did a lot of singing to the radio. I rarely sit with nothing to do. I either have book, magazine, phone or tablet even when watching tv.
You were left sitting in the truck for an hour and 30 minutes???
I would have been furious. Or I would have joined them. But just sitting in a vehicle would drive me crazy!Speaking of husband......his tracker says he expands over 4000 calories a day. I know what he eats most of the time. He has cut WAY down his junk stuffs, yet he has gained 5 pounds since January 1. I don't understand! I am really confused. I plate the man's food. I don't know if he is getting too few calories. I am thinking of setting him up an my account just so we can see really what he is eating. He needs to lose an out 25 lbs now. His heart with afib needs the break. I don't want to lose him early. Any words of wisdom welcome....
Kylia in windy and sunny Ohio
Expending 4000 calories seems like a lot. I know that probably includes just existing, but still ... if he expends, say, 1600 just existing, the remaining 2400 calories burned is a lot.
Maybe the tracker is over-estimating.

Kim thanks for checking in, you were missed!
Kylia I don’t quite understand, the woman went inside but her husband stayed outside talking and drinking with your husband for 90 minutes? Seems strange…?
Patricia in FL, can you look at menus online and pre-log before you go? Making a meal of an appetizer and a side salad can save both calories and $$.
Ginny in OH Happy mfp anniversary and congratulations on discarding those 24 lbs!
Heather love the pic of DH and (Queen) Bea. Sorry for the rough night, hope today will be better.

We had a lovely long weekend away.
Friday: Drove up north.
Saturday: Hosted/organised a 300 km cycling event. We had 7 riders! Drove around the countryside supporting them, then waited for them all to come in. Up at 5:30 am and didn't get to bed till 1 am. Long day! But while waiting I got some homework done.
Sunday: Rest day ... plus a little bit of cycling ... plus I sat out on the deck of the place we stayed listening to one of my course lectures. It was warm and sunny out there. If I must listen to lectures, that's the way to do it!
Monday: Day 1 of my birthday ... We went on a cruise! While waiting for riders to come in, I started browsing through some brochures, saw this cruise and mentioned to my husband that maybe sometime we should do it ... and he said, "Why not Monday?" So I booked it.
Ours was the 4-hour Batman Bridge Luncheon Cruise. It was very nice ... informative with good commentary, relaxing just cruising along, and a great opportunity to see the area by water. I took lots of photos!

We're back home now ................
I've got to figure out the bus itinerary to a Brain Injury meeting tomorrow.
I need to unpack and tidy up.
And I need to do a lot of reading for my courses.

One sort of amusing thing ...
There was some sort of caravan tour group on board the cruise ... grey nomads.
Even though I've turned a year older, during that cruise I came to the conclusion that I wasn't ready to join the ranks of the grey nomads.
I'm kinda glad I'm still working, going to university, cycling, taking a "Run Strong" course, travelling on our own, etc. etc. etc.

Michelle- When I have to pour food in to a bag I usually put the bag in to a bowel that I can overlap the bag top over the bowl edges. No need to have assistance. If really loose fit I'll use those black paper clips to clip bag to rim of bowl.1

Eating in restaurants.....
If planning on eating out I usually search the menu online before I go and make a game plan. If I really want to enjoy I eat very light during the day. Anytime I eat out or have unplanned meals I take a picture of the plate before and after I eat. When taking the picture I make sure my hand is in it as a guide.
Speaking of our hand it is a good measuring tool when we are out. A fist is a cup, first digit of thumb is a tablespoon or an ounce of cheese, your palm is a serving of meat (3-4 ounces). I'm sure there is something online.

The time change has thrown me off. No time to fit in a walk before work. At least it will be light out this evening.1

DH has a lump on his head. He must have hit something when he fainted. He felt a bit nauseous this morning, but he managed all his exercises, albeit very slowly. I would say he feels fine now.

That does not sound good at all!! If it were me, we'd be in the Emergency Department right now and I'd be insisting that there be a CT Scan and MRI. Also that fainting doesn't sound good. I hope he doesn't drive anymore.

Machka- Happy birthday! Sounds like a great weekend. As for waiting in the truck, normally I have something to entertain myself. If it hadn't been cold and in heels I would have walked. The men in my life talk too much! A lot of them have cigars as well which I prefer to avoid. At least the radio was playing great songs!😉 When my husband was finally diagnosed with AFIB(after 3 years of saying his heart wasn't right), the heart monitor he wore for a month showed that his HR was over 150 beats per minute for over 10 hours! No wonder he lost weight then. I need to look at the heart rate on his tracker. The cardiologist did say that the tracker may not track heart rate correctly because of funky beats. I will bring it to the new Dr attention. I am going to set him up an account on MFP to log his eating.
Allie- Take deep breaths! You are close to closing that chapter of your life. You are a strong woman!
HeatherUK- HUGS! That was a long night. I am glad your husband is okay. You will make the right decision for you both when the time comes for the cruise.
Work today. Massage and grocery tonight. I watched a fascinating documentary on the history channel last night about the foods that made America. Coke, Heinz, Kellogg, Post, Hershey.......will have to finish watching on recorded as it was on until midnight. I did get laundry started and dusted our bedroom and the new room. Weekend guests coming, so planning on dusting rest of house this week. Will shampoo carpets Saturday morning. They have a daughter close to my oldest granddaughter's age, so they will be hanging out. At 15 and almost 17, I don't expect we will see much of them.
Eating out- I try to check menus before going. When I don't, things surprise me! I find that if I eat my afternoon snack a little later, it helps me make better choices. Kind of like not going to grocery hungry. Water helps beforehand too. I don't generally drink much while eating.
Welcome to the new ladies!
Hugs (since I can as they are only virtual)
Congratulations on the losses!

HeatherUK- I think I agree with Machka....bump and naseous= ER to me......prayers and hugs!
Lisa- LOVE!3 -
Kylia - I'm with you. I find I do better if I'm not starving.
Machka - DH has a low BP anyway and round about once a year he forgets to drink enough and has this fainting thing in the night. When old men wee it sometimes causes a sudden drop in bp. It's only ever at night. Usually after a hot day. It's quite common in old men. The danger is from how he falls and if he hits anything. He seems totally fine now. It's called Post-Micturition Syncope.
It obviously knocks his confidence a bit.
Waiting for the results of the COBRA meeting today. It might affect what Saga do.

On eating in restaurants ...
Like you two, I check the menus before I go.
If there are calories on the menu, great! I make my selection based on how many calories I have available.
If there are no calories on the menu, I look up my preferred choices on recipe sites to see approximately how many calories they might have. Then I'll choose something at the high end of the calorie choices I find.
I'll also do things like:
- starting with a garden salad without dressing
- not drinking my calories ... water, diet drinks, black coffee
- eating a bit lighter during the day
- getting some additional exercise ... in addition to whatever our usual exercise is, we'll often park a distance away from the restaurant and walk, or if we're travelling, we'll walk from where we're staying.
Machka in Oz4 -
Good morning ladies!
Kylia - I have been stuck in the waiting mode too... thinking "he'll be ready to go in a couple more minutes" which start to stretch out. As long as I had something to entertain myself with, like you did, it wasn't a big deal. Being cold was another thing. Or having to use the restroom! Kinda the same thing sometimes, lol.
Machka - Happy Birthday!
Barbara AHMOD - it was me who posted the link to the gut microbiome interview. I went ahead and sprang for her on-line course, haven't had a chance to listen to her videos but this ancestral eating really got my attention. And resistant starch of course. Our microwave bit the dust (a week after the warranty expired! ) so I've been eating cold oatmeal and cold pizza, lol. So maybe it was meant to be. We need to get the electrician out before we get another microwave - DH has the one we brought from the farm 12 years ago in his shop if I get desperate. It's too heavy to lug into the house and will probably outlast any new one we get from here on out.
Older dog Sophie has a tummy upset - she had loose bowels yesterday afternoon and evening - outside thank goodness, so dosed her up with dog kaopectate. I got up early and she met me -- having to go outside again. So when she came in, I gave her a double dose of kao. And made up some white rice - she had a bit of that with a little boiled chicken for breakfast. I do have pumpkin but was too lazy to go out to the storage shelves in the garage to fetch it this morning. Nothing wrong with her appetite. Hopefully she'll be calmed down by this evening.
Speaking of dogs, time to get the little one up.
Have a good week, ladies!

Ginny in OH: Happy 1st Anniversary!!!
KJ: I love the pie chart. I use it to see whether I’m in a reasonable nutritional balance. I always try to have as close to equal thirds as possible. I feel best that way.
Heather: I am so sorry that your DH had a fainting spell in the night. It must have been stressful for you both. I hope that today is a better day. I looked it up on Web Med and learned a little bit. Evidently it is something that can affect men. They had some bullet points-*avoid excessive alcohol, *don’t get out of bed suddenly, *sit on the edge & then move your legs, *urinate sitting down, and *check with your doctor whether any of your medications could be causing the problem. I hope some of this is useful for you and DH. You may have already heard it.
Machka: Happy Birthday! :flowerforyou:
Lisa: Your DH appears to be an excellent grandpa!
SuziQ & Machka: Some of our local restaurants have calories posted on their menus. McDonalds is on that list, as is Subway. DH can’t eat gluten and that has shortened our list of places to go. Our local Thai Restaurant is excellent and an easy place to get gluten free food. We order rice noodles. This is not an issue for me but is a big issue for DH. I don’t recall seeing calories posted. :noway:
Lanette: Our dog has the occasional dietary upset and we also use white rice. We infuse it with chicken bouillon and add real chicken as his system improves. It has been quite a long time since he has had an upset tummy. These days he needs a seeing eye person. He has cataracts and doesn’t see as well as he did before. :flowerforyou:
.
Stay healthy out there. The world is having a big health challenge these days.

Kylia C'mon, girl! If the circumstances were reversed, you would never have said "thank you" and without a backwards glance headed back into your house without either inviting your friend in or checking with her to be sure she preferred to wait outside for her husband. It's odd and not sociable, and an indication that something is out of order. Maybe hoarding or a stinky cat box or something. Whatever it is, it must have caused her anxiety if she thought you might invite yourself in. Maybe she'll confide in you at some point.
Lisa I adore that picture of your husband and grandchildren. It melts my heart.

My grandson had writing SOLs Thur/Fri last week. He was the first one out both days, always a worrisome sign. He said it was easy and he thought he did really well. All he has to do is pass to be able to advance to 9th grade in the fall. It is likely that he passed.
