Happy birthday 🎂!
I hope your family in Minnesota are doing well🙏🏻. It has to be worrying for you. Know that things are improving here somewhat. Our governor is a good man, who truly has our safety and wellness at heart.
Hang in there. You’ve been a voice of reason through this all for many here, from the beginning. Many of us appreciate it so much!
It IS disheartening, to see others so lackadaisical, when most are following guidelines. It’s sad too.10 -

Happy birthday! Sorry about all the cooking, the other adults should be pitching in with that.10 -
Snowflake - Happy Birthday! Can you ask your DIL to cook every other meal instead of making you do it all? Or just say that you will prepare one meal for the whole family, and for every other meal they are on their own?

Happy birthday at least!
Can you ask your DIL to pick up some of the cooking? Or other members of your family? You shouldn't need to be responsible for all of that and no one should expect you to be.
Went grocery shopping this morning. The only time I plan to leave the house the rest of the week is to drop off gifts. Even just shopping wore me out. Ordering pizza tonight for dinner which should last me a few days. Got a nice bone in ribeye for Yule since it is just me now.
Just feeling really lonely. I live alone with my 2 cats. I work from home. Holidays are already hard for me (all my grandparents and both my parents have passed away... I am not even 40 yet). Adding in the fact I am so closed off from any personal contact and my depression is just really bad right now. Right now my focus is to try and take care of myself and make it through the next week.

All stores, coffee bars, and restaurants are to be closed (we already have had gyms, museums, theaters, sports, etc all closed for 2 months). If you leave your residence you need a permission form downloaded on internet stating your destination and reason. The police will stop and fine anyone noncompliant. No driving anywhere. So, we're trapped in our homes. I've been behind most of the COVID measures in the past, but this time I'm just mad.
I'd be mad too...sounds like the Gestapo to me.5 -

If you’re in SE Minnesota or Western Wisconsin you’re invited. It’s just DD, DH & me. We can have two families over. Daughter is 36, so about your age.
I’m totally serious. No covid so far. Daughter has been working from home for 3 years. She’s lonely, and a little depressed. I worry so about my only chick.11 -
UK, rules have changed, London and the south east have a new level 4 because of the variant virus. Easing of restrictions there and elsewhere have been dropped too. There is probably more.................6

The beginning of the end of the beginning...
My son and his girlfriend were both vaccinated yesterday at the hospital where they work. No problems so far.18 -

Lol with the disagrees...having to have "papers" doesn't sound familiar?5 -

Yep, Christmas is officially cancelled here in Tier 4 UK. All the time and thought is currently sitting in boxes in my spare bedroom and will stay that way until further notice I guess. Posting gifts is going to be impossible I think! The Royal Mail simply can’t cope if everyone dumps parcels into the system on Monday morning! 🤯
I have an extra large Bronze Turkey on order which I’m reluctant to cancel because it’ll not be resold and will therefore go to waste while I buy other food...therefore I’ll pick it up and my husband will be eating Turkey in various forms for months! Meanwhile I’ll be portioning out the enormous and beautiful layered Nut and Vegetable Roast that I made and froze two days ago in preparation 🤷♀️ Portioned into calorie appropriate amounts it’ll do me for at least 36 meals! 😂
I’m devastated that I won’t see any of my children and see them open gifts 😢😢19 -

While I'm not one of the disagrees, I can understand why someone might not agree with equating needing permission to be out in public during a spiking pandemic with Nazis.
Finding a balance in all this can be difficult. Some govts are standing back and relying on citizens to make smart choices and finding this leads to uncontrolled spread, as the irresponsible folks spread it to those being careful. I don't think it's surprising or foreboding that other govts might over-correct to avoid that, whether I think it's the right way to go or not.
Hopefully as vaccine access starts to spread, these decisions will start to become easier for everyone.
I need an ID card to get into all sorts of places, including sometimes having to identify myself to a police officer or govt official as allowed to be present or doing what I'm doing. Again, not saying I agree with a hard lockdown that requires a permission slip, but no it did not make me think of the Gestapo.20 -

I used to cook an entire turkey just for myself every Thanksgiving.
Sliced the breast for sandwiches. Chunked the breast that didn’t make nice slices for salads. Sliced the dark meat I could for turkey and dressing. Chunked the rest for soups. Enjoyed having have 1/2 done meals in the freezer all winter. Enjoy your husbands turkey, and your saving on cooking.8 -

Funny you should say that, because it was just what my sons and I are saying. Our Premier decided this all on his own, consulting with his "experts", not a discussion in Parliment. It was a bolt from the blue. We were discussing that it is the comportment of a dictator. He had been telling restaurants that Christmas would be "normal" and these businesses ordered lots of food for the holidays for the expected clients. They are going to lose their shirts. These people are already hurting. There are promises of money to compensate, but they're still waiting for March and April. He also didn't stop people from traveling for the holidays. And public transport is still overloaded and very dangerous.
Don't worry about your disagrees--you are absolutely right.10 -

Thank you for the ideas!
I know I can and will use it all up (can’t bear the guilt of food waste hence why I’ll still pick it up from the supermarket) it’s just soul destroying and every time I make a curry, casserole, stir fry etc with it, it’ll just remind me of the ‘lost’ Christmas. This was to be the first Christmas all 4 of the children had flown the nest and it’s just hard to come to terms with right now. 😢

I agree with the 2 posts above. Happy Birthday, Snowflake! My birthday (71) next week & not planning to see any family for that or Christmas/New Years, even tho we are only 10 minutes away from daughter & her family. (Moved a few years ago to be closer) It is our turn to be with daughter in OK, but not going there either. I hope the vaccine comes soon & helps 2021 be better for all of us.7

To all of you that wished me a Happy Birthday--thank you from my heart. I am stressing, but will power through--I always do. Everything will get done. My sons asked the other day "Aren't you making cookies this year?", so hey, yep, made some cookies, not nearly as many as I usually do. The cut-out cookies that need frosting are staring me in the face. Monday.
There is a discussion that the in-laws may come and stay in Rome with my DIL and so we may be doing Christmas together. She's an only child. Tomorrow I'll find out. The rules say you can have 2 guests, but have to open a window and have them eat in an adjoining room. Our rules are so complex and most are unenforceable. We are all very careful and it just bugs me to be punished with the real offenders. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, and yes, I know I'm lucky to have all my children here. For those who don't--Hugs.14 -

This means a lot to me. Sadly I am in central Indiana so I will not be able to take you up on your offer.
My family here HAS invited me for Christmas, but it would be 15 people in a small house. Many of who work outside of the home and lots of kids who I don't know how well they have been distancing. It's just not safe. I have no idea WHY they think it would be okay.18 -

Those date ranges seem a little counterproductive, I'd think that would mean everyone would mob the shops on Dec 28th and Jan 4th whether they needed to or not, just to get out of captivity. At the very least, people will be saving their errands for "legal" days.
That's true, but our "legal days" are still strict, and have been for 2 months. What makes me mad is that we're paying for the people who aren't careful enough. There are crowds shopping, in outside bars, etc and are too close together. The great exodus North to South has started. People have to get tested before moving, because there will be check points on the freeways, train stations, and airports. Sigh.
I'm venting, because it means I'll be locked up cooking for everyone--Christmas Eve (fish), Christmas Day, St Stephen's (26th), New Years Eve, New Years Day, and Ephifany. All big holidays here (Italy) with lots of traditional food. I can't even go for a walk in the afternoons, or take a break in a coffee shop with a cappuccino. My son and wife and little kiddies (live across the landing) will be here since she can't be with her parents part of the time (they live outside Rome and the rules say everyone stays home). That means cooking for 6 adults for all these meals. Tomorrow is also my birthday. I'll be 66, great birthday present.
I feel for you. I totally understand because even when I was crippled I still had to make Christmas lunch for everyone. I couldn't walk! It's our choice to say a big NO though if we want to. Get the sons wife to cook maybe or help out or the men? I don't mostly because I know I cook better than them so deal with it all. You are maybe the same. We know you are a good cook. One day I'll say no. lol. Happy birthday. Do spoil yourself somehow, even just a nice long bath and a glass of nice wine.4 -

I'm of Jewish/German decent and my great grandfather left Germany knowing what was coming just before WWII...I don't take having to have "papers" lightly. Anyone and everyone can shove their "papers" up their *kitten*.10
