@Avidkeo I agree with @Tramboman . Great news on the virus containment and losing those kgs. You are an amazing women and handling your stressful situation so well. You're inspiring.
I too hated PE in HS. I tend to hang on to things, so I still have my gym suit - a one piece short set that we had to change into for the class. I hated running and was horrible at any of the games we played. I did pick up tennis in HS, so that gave me some pleasant exercise.2 -

So, GYM STORYTIME.
My stepfather wanted an athlete for a son. I was not. I was full-on D&D Geek. But he really wanted it and kept pushing me into different sports. Which I stunk at. Well, I finally landed on the track team as a distance runner (Funny that 1 mile was considered long distance, and I am now training for a 50k LOL) and the mile was my main race. I ran it like 5:09 back then. Not horrible, but the top three runners in the state were all on my team and they were, well a lot faster. Which meant I could never ever place at any race I ever ran for school.
This was perfect. It meant I could show up for a sport, get a jacket and all that athlete stuff so my step-dad could not complain AND I was never under any real pressure to perform. Excellent.
Well, one year, I think it was 11th grade we had to do the mile in gym class. Well, we did it every year but normally I just took it easy and finished in like 9 or 10 mins. It did not matter so was no need to push hard. This one year my gym teacher was like "if you do not finish in less than 6 minutes I will fail you" or something to that effect. I was like "challenge accepted."
So I sprinted hard for all four laps. Probably like a 5:15 or so pace. Then like a meter or 2 before the finish line... I sat down and waited for the clock to click past six.
Yeah, I was that kind of kid. Teachers LOVED me.
(Her failing me was an empty threat so I was perfectly safe calling the bluff. Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line! err death of a grade)8 -
@Scott6255 So sorry for your family's loss.
Y'all had PE in HS? What? I think we had it 9th and that was it unless you played sports. I was allowed to play hacky sack. But wasn't very good since my femur is was twisted.0 -

Lots of missed posts. I can't comment on everything but liked and hugged along the way.
@Faebert beautiful sunrise, thanks for sharing.
@avidkeo good for you on your weight goals! You are doing so great, and your strength and determination is amazing. Keep up the great work but also I hope you will be back to more normal life in the nearish future - and may we all be!
Another gym class hater here. I was totally terrified of anything that might involve running. And you know, we certainly never learned to run, or trained in any way - it was always full out running 50 m dash (or 50 years because we did not embrace metric in those days) or being yelled at and having to run punishment laps.

I should have run early this morning because I knew the day was going to be busy and I'd regret it later. But it was only in the upper 30s and I wanted to wait out warmer temps into the 50s. And I wanted to sit and have my coffee. I regretted it of course. It was 6:30 pm by the time I could get out and still nice, but I also hadn't walked the dog yet. So, for the second day in a row, poor Stella got dragged out for a run. She started out pretty positively but stopped about a million times throughout. Still, it was a little longer run than yesterday so we accomplished something.4 -
Everyone is struggling with loss of loved ones, sickness, falls, quarantines, disappointments, etc. so I feel guilty posting my news of the day which is basically whether or not I’ve run. To those of you struggling I have no significant insight or words of wisdom. I offer my empathy. Please hang in there.
Thank you @teresa502 thank you for putting in to words what I was feeling. Like I even DID run yesterday, but I just suck at knowing what to say to so many of these things, other than pressing the hug button. So, lacking words for the important stuff, I just didn’t post anything. Please know I see your struggles, challenges, and losses, and y'all are on my mind, and my thoughts and worries are with you, even if I don’t say anything. Please know, me not saying things are because I fail at words, and not because I’m not taking notice/not caring about what you guys are going thru.
I honestly was very likely to abort my runs both of the last two days. However, my boyfriend who has assured me for nearly 4 years now, that nothing in the world would cause him to try running.... started asking me whether or not I had tried the C25K program, and what I thought of it. (This shows how little he has paid attention to what I do for running. Like he supports it happening, from a very oblivious distance. He is also the one who during my half marathon training, suggested he didn’t particularly like DRIVING 13.1 miles.) So, I assumed one of his friends had asked him to ask me about it. NOPE, he was asking for himself. I believe this may be his “hacksaw,” so to speak. In other words, this sudden inquiry into running has me a bit concerned he has gone quarantine stir crazy, but I am also not one to discourage someone trying to do something good for themselves. However.... when he commits to something he COMMITS to it.... so, I know I need to go on my runs to not get quickly left in the dust. So, even his mild interest in the subject is leading me to be more accountable.
Today was supposed to be beautiful and 60 degrees, and instead it was cloudy with 40 mph winds, thus why I went from thinking I would take a long lunch and do a long run (today was a telework day under reduced staff rotation), to putting off and nearly cancelling, and just doing my 30 minute “get some sunshine time” run. All I heard while teleworking was just howling wind, and running seemed to be a terrible idea. And, I’m not saying it wasn’t a terrible idea, but I did it. Yesterday was just under 2 miles, today was just over 2 miles.
Current amusement/funnies.
1. Garmin thinks I walked like 13k steps before noon yesterday.... which means either it is on crack.... or after Saturday’s “de-glittering” I left it on my dryer, and running my dryer shook it enough it thought I walked that far.
2. As I was talking myself into running today, one of my procrastination thoughts was “you really need to shave your legs before you go out in those capris.” Then... I went “no you don’t, if anyone notices you are beginning to look like a cave woman... they are too *kitten* close!!” -bright sides of quarantine.
2.2 today = 6.1 / 508 -

@hanlonsk - I love these!! I may have to try putting my watch on the dryer and see if it thinks I am walking 😂
I have actually thought that I may need to be running in shorts soon and what exactly is that going to be like. I don't shave my legs (very sensitive skin and shaving results in a mess) but get them 'sugared' and the place I go to is of course closed!
No run today! We had record breaking rain and flood warnings. There is supposed to be a break in the rain tomorrow morning so I am hopeful!
Also I had lunch (virtually) with a bunch of my friends today and it was really so very nice just to see all of them and talk and laugh. We didn't use Zoom because of the security and other issues but WebEx worked great!3 -
My husband and I joined the Run the 901 virtual challenge. Run 901 (901 is the phone prefix for the Memphis area) does a road race series which is of course cancelled, so instead they are doing a virtual series throughout April and May. There’s a beginner’s series which starts with a mile and ends with 3.5 miles, and an intermediate series which starts with 5k and ends with 8 miles. There are no awards but there is a leaderboard and a random drawing each week for prizes.
We did the 5k today. My hope was to bring it in under 30 minutes, but alas the weather had other ideas - it was 84 degrees when we started and I am just not up to the heat yet. The neighborhood is also hillier than I’m used to. First two miles were on pace but then I died. Ended up at 31:00 exactly, which isn’t bad for walking several times. I feel sort of disgruntled since in the fall my race pace was closer to 27 minutes, but it is what it is.
We passed an old man out on his front porch who yelled, “Great job, now pick up the pace!” I gave him a thumbs up, and he clarified, “Really though, don’t, you might die of heat stroke!” Since 84 degrees is widely considered a pleasant temperature by non-runners, I bet he was or had been a runner himself.
Other than the heat, a pleasant run. A kestrel zoomed across the road in front of us. We waved to a policeman who was patrolling but otherwise there wasn’t much traffic which allowed us to run in the middle of the road and avoid the broken sidewalks. Speaking of broken sidewalks my hand and elbow seem to be doing okay under hydro-colloidal bandages. I don’t know how we used to live without those! It’s super annoying washing my hands fifty times a day though, the edges of the bandage keep peeling up.
We have a high pollen count and our oak tree has coated my back patio in festive yellow dangles. Which is probably why I have post-nasal drip. But of course I am freaking out thinking this is the first signs of Coronavirus. Y’all pray for me and I will pray for all of y’all! Pray that we all keep our health and sanity as well.

I don’t know what it is, but I’m a bug magnet. I’ll run with a friend or a group and I’m the only one dotted with bugs at the end. I put it down to perspiring a lot but everyone perspires eventually on a run. Better that than eating them, I guess, which happens often enough.2 -
I’ve just had the most amazing running weekend - finally my fitness is back to where is was pre-injury six months ago and, speaking of injury, my Achilles are now virtually pain free when I run. Hallelujah!
On Saturday my training plan called for 30 minutes aerobic, which is somewhere between 5:29 and 6:07 for me. Well, my legs had other plans and although I tried several times to slow down, I ran at 5:11 pace.
On Sunday I was to do 75 mins at aerobic pace - aiming for 5:45 per k. Once again my legs had other plans, even with the previous day’s effort, and I clocked a 5:21 average. Totally stoked.
Yesterday was a rest day but I was feeling twitchy so went for a long walk and, ironically spent the evening hobbling as my Achilles flared up.
Back running today - 15 min warm up, 30 mins tempo on grass, 15 mins cool down. My legs and lungs were happy to run, but the mental kind games at the thought of doing six laps of the local park made this less fun than it should have been.
Also, I ran anticlockwise as you would at a real track - this is not remotely close to a real track, it’s a cricket ground - and now my ITB at my hip is really sore. I’m nursing it with a hot wheat pack as I write this, which is soothing it nicely.
Next time I’ll go in the other direction - and yes, there will be a next time. I was recently reading about the huge benefits running on grass have on leg strength and stability so it’s a goodie to have in the training plan.10 -

The grill is the frontmost part of the car where the headlights are, between the bumper and the hood.1 -
I too was the kid in school who was awful at PE. I remember having to do a fitness test with pull-ups, and I never could do them. I also had asthma pretty bad as a kid, so running didn’t go well either. I have grown out of the asthma, but I still stink at pull-ups.
Two miles last night after work. Someone has started cutting up the tree that fell across one of our neighborhood trails, so I was able to go down the whole trail last night.
We started a step challenge at work last month to go through the end of May. I’m determined to stay near the top. Even though I was burning out with my marathon training, a long run sounds good for this weekend.5 -

@PastorVincent That sounds like something I would have wanted to do, but not had the guts to carry out. Now, I would totally do that!
@hanlonsk I hope your boyfriend sticks with it. I've always gone by the montra "never say never" because you usually wind up doing that thing. In this case, that's a good thing. Love your "funnies." I too have a hard time putting my thoughts into words. It's really funny about the dryer vs the Garmin. I have found that when I play the piano, my Garmin thinks I'm walking. Maybe that means I'm too animated as my piano teacher used to make me balance a penny on the back of my hands while I played, so I wouldn't "bounce."rheddmobile wrote: »

Wow so many of us (me included) hated sports and/or running at high school! I picked it up just shy of my 40th birthday. So many wasted youthful years where I didn’t think I could ever run or be fit...
Anyway, another 3.5 miles in the bag this morning. Still plugging away at short distance every day. Hoping that we won’t have our once a day outdoor exercise banned here so I can continue. But I think many people are feeling jittery now our PM is in intensive care. Whatever your politics, it is scary to feel our leaders may not be able to do the job.
Stay safe everyone xx

@contrarymary - I have read that you should change directions once in a while to not put so much impact on one side to the other, so maybe try alternating laps? Hope everything feels better!
@rheddmobile - I am also one of those who seems to attract bugs. We have gnats that swarm because we are so close to the river and they seem to love me sweat or not. I end up with them in my hair, on my sunglasses, stuck to my skin and clothes and yes, if I am not quick enough to close it, in my mouth.
@marisap2010 - I also could never do the pull-ups. Even after all the strength training I have done and I am pretty strong now, I still can't do one. I was so impressed when @katharmonic decided to challenge herself until she could do one. Maybe there is still hope for me someday...
@mbaker566 - glad you are feeling better and are back!! Been missing your posts and puppy pictures!4 -

Catching up on the thread as usual.
@hanlonsk I don’t wear a mask when I run. I have a homemade one but haven’t used it yet, but I only run with Skip.
My biggest problem with the mask I made is when I breathe my glasses fog up. Ugh
@Avidkeo I agree with you, they are useless if not being used correctly
Up until today we were allowed to go into the office, since there has been very few of us and I personally am no where near anyone. I started teleworking on Friday and my boss said today they are shutting the building down and all of us have to telework. Our main campus has 2 confirmed cases so if we were out there we need to quarantine for 14 days. I haven’t been out there in almost 2 years so I’m okay as far as that goes.
@Camaramandy648 you need to hang out with me and Skip we seem to mark our territory more than any dog. Hate to admit it but it’s true. Nice job on the HM. I laughed out loud at the kid on the bike comment. When my IT band was hurting the orthopedic doc said no down hills. I said you know I’m a trail runner right ha ha my PT said do monster walks and clam shells all day long to strengthen it.
Oh @Scott6255 I’m so sorry to hear about Uncle John. Your wife is a saint for caring for her Aunt, been there with my grandmother it’s very difficult. We’ll keep you all in our prayers.
@tams_89 hope your girl is feeling better
@katharmonic don’t you exploring new trails! Beautiful pictures
@eleanorhawkins our kids are out for good here. K-11 will receive the grades they had at the end of the 3rd quarter as their final grades. Can’t remember what they are doing for seniors but something similar. If you are not ready for promotion to the next grade then you have work the teachers have sent home. Hysterical about the report card
@brittanystebbins95 my dog loves to run. She’s getting older and has hip pain now but I take her to the trails from time to time and let her run loose, she has the best time.
@Teresa502 we are always up to hear good news!
@Faebert great picture
Skip had her track coach as her PE teacher and they had to run the mile like every week to see if they were improving. So off they went and of course lots of kids talking smack to each other, the coach said to Skip 2nd lap you go. Ha ha she blew by everyone and that is how Skip become and queen of the mile in her PE class and won the respect of all those football players running their mouths ha ha ha
@Elise4270 our HS requires 1 9 weeks period unless you have a sport, but xc/track was never allowed to have 4th block time so those kids still had to take PE.

Why Are Mosquitos Attracted to Some People More Than Others?

April Goal: 100 Miles
4/1: 5.16 miles
4/2: 5.15 miles
4/5: 9.02 miles
25.55/100 miles completed for April
336.94/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I had a surprisingly good run this morning. I signed up to do the Run the Year Un-canceled Project Virtual Race Series this month and I had decided to run a 10K this morning since my HM training called for a 6 mile run today. But I wasn't really feeling it. Last night my husband and son and I video chatted with my daughter and I did not go to bed early enough. And while chatting with both of my kids was totally worth staying up late, I didn't sleep well so when I got up this morning I was extra tired and just not feeling like putting much effort into a virtual race. Plus I have just been feeling kind of discouraged lately. I know that the "shelter in place" will not be forever, but sometimes it feels like it will be. I have been feeling like there is really no need to keep training for my May HM. It hasn't been cancelled yet, but I think it probably will be. And that is extra disappointing since this is the HM that was cancelled last May because of lightening and flooding.
But I finally got going and got dressed and headed out the door about 10 minutes later than I really needed to go. I was already deciding that I would just run and not really do the virtual race, but when I got out it was really nice. The moon looked really pretty and it was cool but not cold and as I started to run I started to feel better. I ran the first mile at 10:11 pace which is fairly fast for me, but not too fast and was a pretty good warm-up. Then the second mile I was at 10:00 so I thought I could do this and started speeding up. Mile 3 came in at 9:51 and mile 4 was 9:38 and mile 5 was 9:31. These are all pretty fast times for me and I was pretty excited that I was running negative splits. Mile 6 ended up being 9:53, so I didn't get negative splits after all. But as I was coming up beside the park I heard a dog barking and looked up to see a dog standing in the road about a block away. So I decided to turn around and go back the other way which may have affected my momentum. It should have made me faster, but the indecisiveness over which direction to go made me slow down some. Overall I ended up with 1:00.49 for my 10K which wasn't a PR, but it is my second fastest 10K time according to Strava, so I felt pretty proud of it. I still have not had an opportunity to run in an actual 10K, but I feel like if I ever do I will be able to run it in under an hour when you factor in the excitement of the race atmosphere and the competition you feel from competing with other people.
I think the best part of today's "race" was the feeling that started around mile 3 when I just really fell into a good rhythm and had that feeling of being able to run forever. And even after my sprint at the end trying to get in under 1 hour I felt like I could have kept running if I had had more time. I don't know if that's the "runner's high" or not, but to me it is. And I really needed that today.

5/16/20: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon 🤞13 -
@PastorVincent I am one of those people that mosquitoes love! I can be in a group of people and I'll be the only one bitten. It's annoying. I read the article. My favorite was they like blood from someone who has been drinking beer. LOL That's not me. I think mine is genetic. They love my mom too! Oh, a fun mosquito fact, because their saliva is an anticoagulant, they can't stop drinking with the proboscis inserted into your skin. So, if you catch one on you and stretch the skin on either side so it can't pull out, it will continue to fill up with blood to the point they will burst. I've never let it go that far, but did do it once to the point that it was bulging and too heavy to fly away.
@kgirlhart WTG! I'm sure it was the dog that threw you off. Those split times are amazing to me. Glad you got out there and had such an amazing run!5 -
Today's cross training walk is brought to you, in part, by Matt Fitzgerald. I ordered his book, 80/20 Running, that you all have talked about before. I had it delivered to my mom and dad's house with some other things for them. It came in last night, so part of my walk was getting to their house to pick up the book. I did stop and talk to them and helped my dad pay a bill he was concerned about. Their house is about 0.6 miles from mine, so that made for a good portion of the walk. I finished by taking my dog into the neighbor's field. Completed 2.5 miles in under 39 minutes. Not too bad.
