April 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

After a bad, restless night and bearing in mind my legs are sore and missing my physio and Hal was being too demanding, I decided to ditch the tough 10km training plan I was doing. Instead, I plugged in the date for the Runs on Expresso *kitten* the Sun race, telling Hal I want to run a HM distance with a nice conservative time of 2:45. He has come up with a base training plan for now that seems to include almost as much mileage but at paces that are far more sustainable for me on the 'rather-be-deadmill'. So I've revised my goal for the month, and feel much less likely to collapse or end up lame.
In other C-word news, we've been told we're going to continue locked indoors until at least the 26th of April. They don't expect the kids to go back to school until June.
01/04: 4.81km tempo
02/04: 6.57km base
04/04: 9.6km easy
06/04: 5.08km easy
Revised April goal: 140km. Run so far: 26.06km10 -
A busy weekend and just catching up.
So sorry about you sad news @Scott6255 and hope you both stay healthy looking after your Aunt
Hopefully your daughter is still in good cheer @tams_89 as they seem very resilliant at that age
Congrats on your HM @Camaramandy648 and if you haven't pee'd on a tree in a while you haven't run far enough 😊
Lots of non-exercise exercise this weekend with more house sorting plus emptying, cleaning and refilling the hot tub and moving all my daughter's Uni stuff. Yesterday was clearing the garage and patio to make a table tennis and basketball zone though my children will still tell me they are bored...
Keeping social distancing as the priority my only run was to the shops and back.9 -
username301 wrote: »So after a very good Jan and a very wobbly Feb. March was just a complete fail. I am really very annoyed with myself. But I just don't want to run.
April is another chance. But if I can't stick April, its probably curtains.
1 April...5k, morning routine and Weights.
Guess who wrote a really long and meaningful post and pressed 'done'. Yep, you're right.
Anyway, I do want to run. I have been hit by a bit of a perfect storm of:
1. Hitting two fairly long term goals together. So felt a bit rudderless.
2. Away for part of feb so couldn't run and drinking/poor food was expected.
3. Running and performing fairly poorly because of the above, which is a big motivator for me.
4. Not feeling entirely safe where I run.
But mainly the alcohol which has carried on into March. So I have to keep hitting the reset button until something works. And my earlier post might have done the trick.
Last Week:
Two runs = ttl10k, slow but it doesn't matter.
Three weight sessions
Seven Morning exercises (sit ups etc etc).

Thank you for everyone who replied to my coughing after running thing! I plan to ask my doctor when all this crap blows over. If it is asthma, I'm not too worried. It's something I've experienced my entire life and its never held me back so I'm not going to stress over it. I'm more curious than anything.
Although, if a simple inhaler is the solution to the annoying day or two of coughing...well, I may just suck it up and get diagnosed. I hate labeling myself with illnesses because I worry it'll make me think less of my athletic ability. But, like I said, it's never once held me back, its more of an annoyance, so I'm going to try not to think about that, if it is the case.
Also! I discovered something yesterday.
I love running with my dogs.
That's really the only distance running I've ever done since I started a couple years ago. Funny story, I was actually that kid in gym class that would fake sick and go home to get out of running the mile run. That's how much I hated running. But I wanted to get healthier and I've grown to love it. And obviously my dogs are both herding breeds without a job, so since I started, I take them with me because they love it and it keeps them calm and happy at home.
I went running yesterday without my dogs. I figured I'd give them a break.
And guys....I hate running. I absolutely hate just running.
It was the most miserable, slowest run of my life. Every step sucked.
And from what my husband said, the dogs were pretty clear about their own misery being left at home.
From now on I guess we always run together

@TheMrWobbly Love the Pac Man analogy. You certainly are cleaning up your space!!! WTG!
You can do this @username301 !
Yesterday was a very nice day here....sunny and warm. It was a rest day, so I sat outside and enjoyed nature. Problem was, nature right now is pollen, so my seasonal allergies have flared up. Today, it's my left side - nostril and eye pouring their respective fluids. And sneezing! Does anyone else have to bend over when they sneeze so they don't hurt their back? I know it's allergies and I will survive. It could be a lot worse. The running may take a hit this week though. I'll just have to wait and see how it goes.7 -

@Scott6255 I'm so sorry for your loss.
With 91 posts over the weekend, I'll just say "yay!" for everyone who met their running goals and hugs to everyone who is struggling with various physical/life restrictions right now.
I had my first run with the hydropack yesterday. I was VERY worried at the beginning because I was so distracted by the weight of the water bottles (2 20 ounce packs). But after the first mile, I was used to it and obviously it was lessening consistently throughout the run as I was drinking the water. I think I can do this! The pack itself was very comfortable -- no chafing or anything.

Everyone is struggling with loss of loved ones, sickness, falls, quarantines, disappointments, etc. so I feel guilty posting my news of the day which is basically whether or not I’ve run. To those of you struggling I have no significant insight or words of wisdom. I offer my empathy. Please hang in there.
I ran 11 miles on Saturday morning. I originally planned for 10 but poor route planning led me to 11 and a half mile cool down walk. I didn’t really mind. It was a beautiful morning to be out and other than a grocery run for my mom I had nothing else planned for the day. Yesterday I rode my bike for 23 miles. Another beautiful sunny afternoon to be out and not a lot of traffic on the roads to worry about. This morning I ran intervals on the treadmill for 2.4 miles using one of the programs on the Peleton app. I felt good at the end and could have kept going but our treadmill is in the basement and that’s where my husband sleeps when he is working night shift. He’s currently on 12-hour night shift for 7 days so I had to clear out so that he could go to bed.
@brittanystebbins95 – I was that girl who would do anything to get out of running in high school gym too! And now I’m setting out at 5:00 am pounding the pavement and paying to run in races! Younger me did not see this coming!
@TheMrWobbly – you have accomplished some major reorganization projects! Love the PacMan meme! Perfect!

@Teresa502 If it makes a difference, it's comforting to me to see so many people still chasing their running goals during this period of uncertainty and sadness. Your weekend run and bike ride sound great. I'm glad you were able to find some beauty this weekend.
Whether it's running, crafting, time (physical or virtual) with loved ones, reading, or whatever, we all deserve to connect with our pleasures - they're even more important when times are hard.6 -

April Goal: 100 Miles
4/1: 5.16 miles
4/2: 5.15 miles
4/5: 9.02 miles
19.33/100 miles completed for April
330.72/1000 miles for Run the Year Team Pavement Pounders
I didn't get a chance to get on here yesterday to post my run. I ran 9 miles and it was a pretty good run. It was chilly starting out so I wore capris and a t-shirt with sleeves and gloves. But I was just a mile in when I realized that I was already getting warm so I took my gloves and sleeves off. Since I was near my mom's house I just stuck them in her mailbox instead of putting them in my pockets. It was about 50°F when I started out and not really windy and about 54°F when I finished. But starting at 97% humidity that was only down to about 90% by the end made it kind of clammy. So I went back and forth between wishing I had worn shorts and a tank top and being glad I wore the capris and t-shirt. It was a mostly uneventful run. I only saw one person out running, but honestly I rarely see anyone out running any way. The main difference now is there isn't anyone at the park when I go past it. And since it is a small town there's never a lot of traffic so I don't notice much difference there either. So at least running still seems totally normal for me.
After my run I came home and made pizza and then I had to go to the grocery store. I wore a mask that I had made on Saturday. I felt a little silly but there were others wearing masks too. My son said that wearing a mask feels weird at first but you get used to it. He said in Japan almost everyone wears them and it is really more uncommon to see people not wearing them during flu season. When I got home I spent the afternoon making more masks. I did decide to use ties instead of elastic. The first masks I made for my husband, my son and myself needed quite a bit of adjusting and since I am giving the other masks to my sisters and my mom and mother-in-law I thought ties would be easier if they need to adjust them.
@scott6255 I am so sorry for your loss. There are really no words. I hope that you and your wife stay safe and healthy and that your aunt will make a full recovery.
To everyone else I liked lots of post and gave some hugs, but I was so far behind that I just can't respond to everyone.

Apologizing in advance for the not so happy post:My wife's uncle John past away Friday night from COVID-19. He battled for over a week, but being 90 with severe respiratory issues and pneumonia 3 weeks ago, it was just too much. He and his wife (Aunt Betty) have been more like parents to my wife and I for the 30 years they have been together. And for sure he has been more of a father to me than my father was for the 13 years that he stuck around.
And.... we got the results back on Aunt Betty last night. She tested positive for COVID-19. She is quarantined in the front two bedrooms / spare bathroom at the front of our house. My wife is having to play caregiver/nurse as her Alzheimer's has gotten quite a bit worse just in the week she has been here. She can no longer dress or feed herself. She gets lost every time she goes around the corner to the bathroom, and doesn't even know how to get into bed anymore. But she isn't showing any real symptoms, so that's a blessing. Wife and I are still symptom free, so taking it one day at a time.
9.0 miles in remembrance of the 90 wonderful years John was on this earth. He was more of a father to me than my father was in the 13 years that I knew him. RIP John, you WILL be missed!!
I'm so sorry ♥♥ My heart goes out to you and your family1 -
Late check in for me today as I was rushing to get to work this morning. It’s been a stressful day and I will spare you all the details. I had a terrible nights sleep but I’m so glad I forced myself out this morning for my run. Got treated to the most beautiful sunrise. I never normally stop on a run but I had to quickly capture the sky. If I’ve done it right, the pic is pasted below..
Keep safe and sane everyone x

Nope! Try again

@brittanystebbins95 - I too was that kid who hated running. I was the chubby one who was SO slow and always finished last. I didn't find and start to enjoy running until I was in my mid-50's and then only because my trainer told me to give it a try, one block at a time. I have pretty much the entire story on my profile if you are interested.
It is pouring rain out right now with a flood warning so no run this morning. Hoping maybe to get out this afternoon and if not I will get in a strength workout. I do have a 'lunch' on the calendar today with my girlfriends. Our first video meet up.6 -
April's running challenge 40 miles
April 2 - 3 miles
April 4 - 4 miles
April 6 - 4.3 miles

I have an old school report card on which the PE teacher had written... 'Eleanor's excuses to get out of sports are becoming more and more creative as time goes by. If she would only put as much effort into PE classes as she does into avoiding them she would be a star student.' Makes my daughter LOL!

I am wondering if maybe when I am cleared to run again if I should get some running help to see how my stride is and if I can "improve" it to prevent future issues.
It would not hurt to have your stride checked by a PT or someone that is actually knowledgable in biomechanics and running. There is a VERY LARGE variety of good strides pending on your mechanics. In general, we all run about the same, but we all automatically tweak to adjust to terrain and muscle weaknesses. An expert can help you address any issues. But any adjustments take time and hard work usually. So be ready for that.
Yes! Great advice. I really want to run and minimize injuries so this will be worth investing in. Thanks!0 -
I got a reprieve from the sneezing, so decided I had better exercise while I could. It's beautiful outside, but opted for a treadmill run to avoid the pollen. So, today's slow treadmill 4 mile run is brought to you by Emergency. I remember watching that show when I was young and thought how "exciting." Now, it's almost laughable, but it shows how far we have come during that time. The show I watched today was before they were allowing the fire fighters to be paramedics and how the doctor's were skeptical that it would work. Anyway, with the warm up and cool down walks, I traversed 5 miles today.

To everyone here, hugs and high fives.
I too was that kid in PE Hard to imagine I run like I do now. @eleanorhawkins That report card
We've had absolutely gorgeous weather here the past weekend and even the next couple of days. Sadly this also brings out ALL the people - don't get me wrong, in "normal" times this would be great. Right now, not so much.
I did a 10 mile run on Sat and usually there are half a dozen folks on this particular trail. So many packs of people I had to go around. It really is getting to be a bit much. And yesterday went for a bike ride and the same thing. Even worse yesterday. I'm all for getting out, just follow rules and social distance.
Rest day today, but may take a walk around the hood. It's beautiful out.5 -

I was actually a good runner as a teen but we never ran in PE, despite having a track. The track was reserved for the track team. I did fail PE though - four years in a row! - because although I did everything in class, I flat out refused to “dress out” because of being teased because my legs were pale, since I spent my free time training horses instead of laying out getting a tan. And you were marked down 5 points per day not dressing out. Hard to believe that in the culture back then not baking yourself like a potato was unthinkable. As soon as tanning booths for teenagers became a thing, which was about the middle of my senior year, I jumped on it and my life went from horrid to just ordinary levels of bad. Of course now half the people I grew up with have had skin cancer. In my senior prom photos everyone is some shade of bronze.
It’s sort of ironic that the year I came closest to my childhood dream of pursuing a professional sports career - I actually made it to the junior olympics - I also failed PE. But that’s school, being good at the subject isn’t the point, jumping through hoops is the point.
Anyway in Tennessee you are required by law to pass PE to graduate so a sympathetic dean gave me credit hours for doing paperwork for the coach, who was dyslexic.
I think back to high school today and wonder about the morality of forcing a teen girl to wear short shorts against her will. Why is that even a thing? And not just girls, guys have body issues too. My husband remembers hating having to take his shirt off for gym class because that was how they distinguished teams.9 -

I think the way high schools over there approach PE is disturbing. The whole "you have to pass this class or fail HS" sux and is so limiting.
That said, I also hated PE in HS as well, but we only had it for 3 years. Looking back, it was mostly because of being bullied, picked last, that sort of thing. And I also hated running haha.2 -

It was a well intentioned idea, kids in TN have a high rate of obesity and it was supposed to force schools to give them some sort of exercise daily. In practice we spent most of our time standing around ignoring volleyballs, while the four girls who actually liked volleyball played around us.2 -
Morning all. Up at 630,went for a 3k walk, because its rest day. Was going to do some weights but I find my desire to life heavy things just isn't there atm. I know I should because its good etc, but I just cannot be bothered! I'm tempted to do a few squats and lunges each day, they are best for runners, but to lift heavy enough to actually gain any muscle, nah. I mostly just want to keep what I've got I guess (which isn't much)
In other news, eating is going well. Day 2 of lock down plan was good. I'm aiming to eat all my calories + half of exercise calories. I really hope I get to my first goal by the end of the month! This is the goal weight I set when I started this journey in December 2016 - my goal was to get to 64kg and reassess, I was 88.9kg so that was essentially 25kg loss. I'm around 1kg away from that goal atm - probably slightly more due to a weekend of over indulgence. I've decided that since I'm in lock down, with limited access to food, I'm only buying what I actually need, I'm planning my work meals, and I'm going to hit that goal at the end of the month. I can't do my usual daily weigh in, so when I'm out of isolation and able to weigh in again it will be a surprise!
Oh some positive news as far as that goes:
Our rate of positive tests in NZ seem to be holding steady if not slightly decreasing. We've been in lock down for 10 days. It's still going to need the whole 4 weeks to be sure, but there is a little bit of hope? That said the testing changed just a few days ago, from having to been in contact with someone with covid, to EVERYONE WITH Symptoms. So we may see a surge in the next few days. The hope is we don't, because if we don't that means we didn't get significant community spread.
But in the province I live in, we haven't seen a positive case since last Wednesday - that's 5 days ago. I'm really hoping that's the extent of our cases because that means I can go back in with my family after Easter!8 -
@Avidkeo That's great news about possible containment in your province!1

@Faebert that sunrise is TO DIE FOR and is a bucket list item. Those of you who know me know that I am a slowwwwwwwww morning person. I can get up for work because that's where money comes from but getting up early for anything else is basically the worst. There's a rule in my house where we don't talk to me before some coffee.
Today at work hasn't been quite as ridiculous as the last few so that is great, but we do have two positive cases in our company, though in the Little Rock office. They're restricting the first and second floor people - it's like two different companies now, but same building. Essential businesses will do anything to keep the doors open and not pay people to be home (why I am still at the office). At least the two positive cases are there and not here, but I am sad they are there as well.
They also announced school closure for the remainder of the school year. All classes will be taught online now. It has been going okay, thanks to my amazing kids, but sending them to school is definitely easier, in my opinion. It is hard to be working and homeschooling through the day and night every day.
I haven't decided on a distance for this weekend's Uncanceled project run. I suppose it would be wise to do a shorter distance since it's easter weekend and I don't think the kids will be seeing their dad until the curve flattens a bit in his state. he is genuinely losing his mind. I'm not saying the virus should be taken lightly.
I AM saying.... it isn't an excuse to be a psychopath.
Anyway.... That gives me these options for this weekend's Hope-themed race:
1. Half marathon again
2. 10K
3. 5K
Thoughts? Also let's bear in mind i already have the Full Moon 50K in July (hopefully) so maybe using this weekend as a cut back weekend for the long run for that training isn't a bad idea... And maybe I'll do a little 5K tomorrow... Idk3
