Cloudy and mid 40s F this morning, so back to shorts and short sleeved tech shirt. Hip was OK. I'm beginning to think that, when I go slow, I tend to shorten my stride and am constantly jamming the ball end of the femur into the hip socket. But when I go easy, my stride tends to lengthen and thus does not jam the ball end of the femur into the hip socket quite so jarringly. That's my diagnosis -- probably worth what I paid for it.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?

Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020K in 2020
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders
2020 races:
5-23 Race for the Parks 5k, Hudson OH
6-20 Freedom Run 5k, Aurora, OH5 -
I did my half marathon for the uncanceled project yesterday!
It really wasn’t any different from a normal long run on a Saturday for me - except the gym session was makeshift at at home early in the morning. And the trails were so empty. I posted some pictures on the fb page.
I actually had such a great time, singing out loud and kind of dancing while I ran - Pandora was really on it, yesterday. I was so, so, happy because I was mostly pain free and felt “i could do this all day!”
The othe runners that were out were so friendly and there were spots where you could see where people had marked starting and stopping points for their races. It was pretty neat - everyone is so determined.
I also saw a dad on a bicycle pulling his small child up a hill - the child was on roller skates attached via a bungee of some sort. My thought was “well the world is ending anyway so I guess we’re all living on the edge a little.”
The context for that is, in the first mile- the FIRST MILE, of my race, I had to pee soooooo bad but all the bathrooms are closed now, so I found a nice tree and peed on it. I have not done that in my adult life and have certainly not done that in public. Anddd i didn’t get arrested soooo .......
My pace varied so much throughout the day because I kept stopping to take pictures. Also to pee. The first mile was 23 minutes lol. Best pace was 10:22 and worst pace (aside from 23) was 16:53 or something.
Running down the hills seemed to aggravate my IT Band the most but I felt it in my knee. I usually glide down hills after running up them but yesterday the knee pain got bad enough that I walked down half the hill. On the flatter surfaces, it wasn’t so bad.
So far for the IT Band i have used:
Stretching
Foam rolling
CBD butter
Joint supplement (for the anti inflammatory properties)
Beets and beet greens added to diet
Mostly anti inflammatory diet
Krill oil
Rest
Glute strengthening exercises
Core strengthening exercises
So i don’t know that it’s just ONE thing that is helping - it’s probably a conjunction of all of them. I’ll keep doing what I’m doing since it seems to be working.
Anywa, it was a great day yesterday and today I have house cleaning and errands. I am NOT looking forward to having to get out - not even a little bit. My errand is grocery shopping, which I loathe right now. Normally I can get whatever I need delivered but there are no deliveries available so it’s been tough!
I hope everyone has a greatSunday!6 -
@Tramboman good job! I think you might be on to something - i read that a shorter stride length. An cause more pain - at least for the IT Band. Can’t remember where I read it- probably some running site - but that’s part of my problem too. How in the world do i lengthen my stride when i am only four feet eleven inches tall? It just feels like my body doesn’t want to do it!
I’m guessing you’re taller than me so maybe figuring it out and fixing it will be easier for you!0 -

Thanks for the props.
You probably have a "regular" stride, and I suspect it shortens and lengthens depending on your speed.
By way of example, Garmin tells me that my average stride length during my "slow" run this week was .78 meters per stride. During my "easy" run this week, my average stride length was .84 meters per stride. And during my "moderate" run today, my average stride length was .91 meters per stride. Just for giggles, I pulled stats from my Garmin 5k PR. My time was 31:16, and my stride length averaged 1 meter. And I'm 6 feet tall.
Our height differs, our stride length differs, and our speed differs, but you may also find your stride lengthens the faster you go.1 -
Today was the Cap 10K date. Bummer, but since I couldn't have run it anyway, I will do a virtual 10K ride or 3.
@Tramboman Maybe I'll add some planking while baking....kill 2 birds with one stone sorta thing. And interesting about your stride length. I do tend to have a short stride. I am wondering if maybe when I am cleared to run again if I should get some running help to see how my stride is and if I can "improve" it to prevent future issues.
@hanlonsk That picture is so funny....I had the same thought about the hack saw. It reminded me of a really morbid story that happened here in Austin years ago where a UT student on drugs killed his girlfriend then went to the store and bought bleach and a hack saw to take care of things....
@Camaramandy648 Nice run! I am impressed with your IT Band plan.
@Avidkeo As for your question: We are finally back into catching up on Outlander. So good...and oddly uncomfortable with our adult children around. We watch when they are not around lol. And we finally tried watching Tiger King....OMG. My husband lasted 5 minutes and was gone. I don't think I can finish it. Tragically, grotesquely entertaining. And we are watching NCIS from the very beginning.

Apologizing in advance for the not so happy post:My wife's uncle John past away Friday night from COVID-19. He battled for over a week, but being 90 with severe respiratory issues and pneumonia 3 weeks ago, it was just too much. He and his wife (Aunt Betty) have been more like parents to my wife and I for the 30 years they have been together. And for sure he has been more of a father to me than my father was for the 13 years that he stuck around.
And.... we got the results back on Aunt Betty last night. She tested positive for COVID-19. She is quarantined in the front two bedrooms / spare bathroom at the front of our house. My wife is having to play caregiver/nurse as her Alzheimer's has gotten quite a bit worse just in the week she has been here. She can no longer dress or feed herself. She gets lost every time she goes around the corner to the bathroom, and doesn't even know how to get into bed anymore. But she isn't showing any real symptoms, so that's a blessing. Wife and I are still symptom free, so taking it one day at a time.
9.0 miles in remembrance of the 90 wonderful years John was on this earth. He was more of a father to me than my father was in the 13 years that I knew him. RIP John, you WILL be missed!!

@Camaramandy648 Congratulations on the finish! I will take a look at the pictures!2 -
@Scott6255 I'm so sorry for you loss. I was thinking about you earlier today. I hope you can continue to stay safe. Alzheimer patients get really confused when their routine is interrupted or they get moved - I'm sure you knew that already. I'm just saying she may get some better once she gets used to being at your house. Fingers crossed for you anyway. Prayers and hugs too!2

It would not hurt to have your stride checked by a PT or someone that is actually knowledgable in biomechanics and running. There is a VERY LARGE variety of good strides pending on your mechanics. In general, we all run about the same, but we all automatically tweak to adjust to terrain and muscle weaknesses. An expert can help you address any issues. But any adjustments take time and hard work usually. So be ready for that.

SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the goal of a BQ in 2021. It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
So here we go:
DAY :::: PLAN :::: ACTUAL
Monday :::: 8 miles + 1/2mile repeats :::: Cross Training
Tuesday :::: Rest Day ::::: 8 miles + 1/2mile repeats
Wednesday :::: 10 miles :::: 10 miles
Thursday :::: 10 miles + hill repeats :::: Teen Drama
Friday :::: Rest Day ::::: 10 miles + hill repeats
Saturday ::::: 18 miles :::: 14 miles
Sunday ::::: 6 miles ::::: 0
Total Miles: 45 out of 44 planned
So not the best week. Started out okay. I had to move the days around due to things going on in life, but I had a good plan in place for all the runs, just in different slots. Well when I got to Saturday, it was HOT. I was not ready for that. Will not be ready for those temps for weeks yet. Well, I still went out with plans to do all 18, just to take it a bit easy. Well somewhere around mile 11 or 12 my ankle started to warn something was not right. Not hurt exactly, but it was not quite right.
Well one lesson that @mobycarp taught us was that taking a rest for a day or two is better than losing a month for recovery from a serious injury so I made the turn to head in and called it a day at 14 miles and took Sunday off. I will restart next week. Hopefully with no issues.4 -
@Camaramandy648 congratulations on your HM run! Sound like you had such a good time, that's fantastic.
@Scott6255, I'm so very sorry for your family's loss and for the worry and heartache of taking care of your loved one with dementia and COVID-19 in your home. I wish there was more to offer that would help, but thinking of you and hoping you will all be well.
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
04/01/20 :::: 5.0 :::: 5.0
04/02/20 :::: 3.0 :::: 8.0
04/03/20 :::: 3.5 :::: 11.6
04/04/20 :::: 10.2 :::: 21.8
04/05/20 :::: 1.5 :::: 23.3
I went for a 7.2 mile hike this morning and it was a much needed escape. The trail is not far away but is one I haven't been on, although I've been on other trails in that area. It was a challenging enough hike between the elevation gain and tons of mud, with lots of nice scenery including a waterfall that you can walk behind. There were only a handful a people on this trail all morning, but when I was driving back out I saw the trailhead for the most popular trail that goes directly to the waterfall and it was just PACKED with cars.
A few pics under spoiler:
After a little bit of a rest and getting a little work done, I still needed to run and walk the dog, so I attempted the twofer. As usual it was not that successful but we (barely) got our 20 minutes in and then I gave up and walked with her. She was immediately much happier and I swear twice as fast.
Wishing everyone strength and peace in the new week ahead.

@katharmonic Looks like a great place to hike! Funny that your dog went faster after you gave up and started walking.0

Oh @Scott6255 I'm so so sorry. He was so loved and he will be remembered. Biggest Internet hugs to you and your family.0 -
Well nothing special here. I got up, did 5k per Hals request (glad my name isn't dave right now...) and did it well. Went to work. Have come home early cause its the calm before the storm, so we have very few patients to a lot of radiographers. Taking some leave while I can since I've had to cancel my actual holidays.
So playing the Sims 2, a game I love but haven't played in years. Make hay while the sun shines?6 -
@Scott6255 I'm so sorry for your loss0
