Check-in #17: 1 can of sparkling rose and 1 glass of wine. No stress eating though.6

As usual, I am going to try for 16-20 AF days for the month.
I had 18AF days for January
I had a surprising (and record setting for me) 21AF days for the short month of February!
18AF days for March
Onward to April : - )
Wednesday April 01 - AF
Thursday April 02 - AF - Felt like having drinks, but really determined to get back to at least 2AF days in between.
Friday April 03 - AF because I have a webinar in the morning that I want to be sharp for. Planned wine with a friend for her birthday - yes, we will stay 2 metres apart and likely outside.
Saturday April 04 - Drinks
Sunday April 05 - AF
Monday April 06 - AF
Tuesday April 07 - AF - My Tuesdays have changed, no longer working my tail off and stressed out for the first Tuesday "off". Normally my drinks day. I am really battling to get off the March weight gain, and I know that being more AF helps.
Wednesday April 08 - 3 drinks
Thursday April 09 - AF - I need to be AF again tomorrow so as to have at least 2AF days in between. It has been warm and beautiful here, but it is supposed to drop drastically for a week starting Saturday with more snow. I have done work in the garden hoping to get planting soon, but apparently I need to wait.
Friday April 10 - 3 drinks, broke my own rule of always 2AF days in a row. Just didn't have the willpower today I guess.
Saturday April 11 - AF
Sunday April 12 - AF
Monday April 13 - AF
Tuesday April 14 - AF - Tuesdays no longer stress me out because I don't go out to work anymore. I have time to work out more, prepare healthy food, get out on the trails everyday. I do work on my little Amazon business at home and have a learning seminar tomorrow morning early, so AF tonight so that I hopefully absorb a bunch.
Wednesday April 15 - AF - Planned drinks tomorrow. Hey, that was 5 AF days in a row!!
Thursday April 16 - 3 drinks
Friday April 17 - AF - Woke up 2 pounds heavier from having drinks. All the more reason to have lots of AF days. Having said that, I am invited for wine and cheese tomorrow afternoon on my friend's patio where we can stay 6 feet away easily. We'll see. I work very very hard at losing weight and really know that the less alcohol days the better for that.
Saturday April 18 - AF - It was rainy and grey today, so no sitting out on my friend's deck. Tomorrow will be AF also because I have joined a weight challenge that weighs Mondays, so that is my short term motivation to not drink on Sunday. (I seem to gain like 2 pounds the morning after drinking for some reason)
Sunday April 19 - Drinks on my friend's patio in the hot sun after turning over and weeding 2/3 of my snap pea area.
Monday April 20 - AF - Finished the Snap Pea area, very hard work with a shovel, lots of bending, squatting, lunging. I would have enjoyed a drink (or 3), but need 2 AF days in a row at least, so tomorrow too.
Tuesday April 21 - AF - Another afternoon digging in the garden, I really wanted a couple of drinks after that, but I have a learning Webinar tomorrow, and one the next day so I didn't, plus I wanted my 2AF days in a row. Hit the bottom half of my monthly goal today : - )
Wednesday April 22 - AF
Thursday April 23 - Drinks
Friday April 24 - AF - Felt pretty crappy this morning, but weirdly enough really wanted to have drinks tonight. Keeping to my own rule of 2AF days in between.
Saturday April 25 - 3 drinks - broke my own 2AF day rule for in between.
Sunday April 26 - AF
19AF days out of 26 days so far6 -
My new go-to grownup drink. I call it the Pink Fizzy Kicker.
2/3 diet ginger beer, 1/3 diet cranberry juice, splash of lemon. And ya, I broke out my Wine and Friends cocktail napkins. Cuz why can't I? (Or course, I was drinking with neither, but I had the ambiance while cooking jalapeno shrimp.)10 -
GOOD MORNING to each and everyone reading, posting or passing through.
May right around the corner. I am hoping for many dry days(weather wise) as my new and IMPROVED business plan requires all outdoors work. Also will be striving for lots of dry, non alcohol days as well. I am going to be easier on myself in May and make sure I stick to my no more than 2 standard drinks on any one day that I had in place , but lost it because of the pandemic. And it would probably be good to throw in an AF spacer of several days in between.
Nice looking "pink fizzy kicker" @mainelylisa. Kind of matches your hair shade. 🙄 I had "virgin bloody Mary's" over the weekend. They are good but I have to watch the sodium content.
Enjoy the day everyone!

Celebrated my 40th birthday last night and only had 2 drinks. Virtual party definitely helped to slow me down. I didn’t want to get up in the middle of the “party” so I only had one during the call and one after.
Am thankful for Zoom and friends willing to meet virtually to celebrate!
Happy 40th!!!!!3 -
@NovusDies congratulations on one year AF!!!!2
-
16 AF days so far. Had 2.5 drinks on Friday, 2 Sat and 1 last night. Back to AF today.4
-
21 AF days/26 days...in the home stretch for April...!4

Check-in #18: 2 IPA beers yesterday. I've also restarted my food diary. That's when I found our how many calories those IPAs have. Hmmm5

I am all about the mocktails!!! It helps keep the FOMO at bay!3 -
No alcohol since 3/22 and beginning on 3/23, I made a goal to abstain for one year...but I can assure you...no, I'm changing my mind on that one...I'm not punishing myself, especially since I haven't done anything to deserve or not to deserve it...
I think we're hard enough on ourselves, as a group, to begin with... and we are all trying to do better.
One day at a time but since I started the month off without, I'd like to end it that way... April has been a good month for me...I cannot complain!!!
@Doxmum I need to restart my diary also.
I'm going to set different fitness goals for May. So far I've run 119.4 miles this month for a goal of 130 but I do not want to set that kind of goal again because this is when running is no longer fun for me. Goals are goals, though, hit or miss. I abstained from alcohol and ran every single day so far. So I'm happy with this month...8 -
This is day one. Sick of feeling awful in the AM. Any tips to stop from that nighttime drinking, which leads to other bad choices? I am in a foreign country so don't have ability to make "mocktails" and fancy things. =( Thank you.11

Hey all. I'm really struggling. Haven't been here in a few days because I'm embarrassed to report that I've been drinking every night for the last 4 nights. On Thursday, got word I am most likely losing my job soon. I live in a rural place and finding a new job is beyond impossible. I have a really good job that provides most of our family's income plus health insurance benefits for our family. Now we are looking at losing our health insurance in the middle of a pandemic and being unable to pay our mortgage. I am scared and worried, and unfortunately have found that midway through a second cocktail, that seems to go away temporarily and it seems that is the only thing that helps. Although as you all know it doesn't help because the next day I am even more depressed. I'm caught in the cycle now and I need to get out. I guess I'm here to own up and see how awful it feels to type out my alcohol intake over the last few days.

@shorepine My heart goes out to you and your family...I have no great advice but I will be here to support you in the less drinking endeavor. You definitely sound like you need to get a hold over this but you definitely should not be embarassed. You know what you need to do and you know you can do it and you WILL do it!8
-
@shorepine First of all, you don't have to be on a sober day to post here. And no guilt. This is about struggles and accomplishments. Not sure if you might be inclined to check with your doc for possibly a mild something to help anxiety, while not making you feel like crap the next morning, like our DIY solution does. And not lead to/amplify depression, like said DIY solution does.
@morrisjen2014 Getting started is often the hardest part. Look for online drink/less / stop drinking / take a break websites & meetings. If there's something you really like to do, do that at night--even if it involves some calories and/or couch potato-ing. Also, when I get a good workout in, my craving for alcohol goes down a lot. I'm much more likely to work out if I'm not feeling like poison is coursing through my veins. And I really did mean it when I said that No Hangover mornings become addictive.
It's been almost 2 months for me and it IS getting easier to not miss my wine. Old Fashioned. G&T. Prosecco. IPA. Dirty martini extra olives. I'm slowly building other habits, hobbies, rituals. Or just giving myself permission to eat chocolate bunnies (from my secret stash) on the couch while watching Good Girls. Which reminds me of another story I'll share tomorrow.

Glad that you are joining our little group, welcome!
Yeah, from time to time we just put stuff into fancy glasses to feel like we are getting a "treat".
Pour your tea or ginger ale into a wine glass? I don't know what you normally imbibe, but re-purpose that style glass with different contents maybe.
I am with you, drinks lead to bad food choices!!
For me...it was just to have one AF day. It seemed so hard at the time, but I didn't die or anything. It proved to me that I would be okay if I didn't have drinks one day per week. From there I progressed to 2 days per week AF etc.
We are here.5 -
@shorepine
Yes. Interesting times. New reality.
You have an internet connection and a good brain, perhaps time to think outside of the box and come up with something new.
So many things will never be going back to the way that they were. We have to innovate and adapt.
Healthcare is a real kicker, even for me who lives in Canada it is.
Lots of companies have moved online and they really need employees who can work from home, answer emails and phone calls, do administrative stuff.
I truly hope that you can find something.
I too am guilty of just wanting that numbing feeling that alcohol provides, but I really really really don't feel well the next day, and my anxiety goes through the roof. Even days where I woke up feeling not "well" I still crave alcohol by the evening time. I get that it is a choice and all of that, but easier said than done. We just have to have resolve...and each other. Checking in here whether we drink or whether we don't really does supply so much comfort and accountability.3 -
Well, I see that this current crisis has undone many of us. Present company included. I am near the 2/3 mark of a bottle of Chianti that I uncorked to only have a wee glass or two. Many reports of dire or near terminal illnesses from in-laws and far family members, unemployment, displacement ...Nothing that I can do anything about.
Grandson is doing very well with online school, with his Mother being long distance [Louisiana/Pittsburgh] helicopter Mom.
Eldest Daughter & SIL will be traveling back to Maine next month to begin lobster season. Everything is in place as planned, with many frayed edges...
Awesome blue skies in Da'Burgh lately, after Middle daughter telling me for years that she only saw blue sky after crossing south over Mason-Dixon Line. T'wil be so bad that when "economy" heats up again that the blue skies will disappear again.
"When will they ever learn"...??6 -
@mainelylisa @dawnbgethealthy thank you both so much for the comments! I was nervous to post on here but I think support is the one thing I've been missing since I travel alone and live alone. It's that time at night and the "boredom" I fear. I will use your suggestions. Oh and AF today.7
-
@shorepine , since I was laid off a few months ago, I've been working with a job coach who let me know that people experienced in remote working are in demand and now is as good a time as any to find something new because too many people (me too) are holding off applying due to Covid. If your company offers free job coach support, it's worth it. Also, taking any action that benefits oneself is better than sitting and waiting for the last day. A solution exists and you will find it....4

22 AF days/27 days....
@morrisjen2014 : welcome! let's see, suggestions to deal with breaking the evening drinking that work-here are tactics I used in the beginning and I used all of them!
1-delaying the first drink (ie: set rules to start at 6pm instead of 5pm)
2-setting a time to stop the last drinking (ie: last call at 7pm)
3-spacing- drinking water in between
4-switching to lower alcohol % drinks, even if it's 11% instead of 13.5%, etc; buy smaller size cans or bottles
5-measuring (ounces) and tracking, slowing reducing
6-after reducing significantly, jumping to no drinking for one 24 hr period, done on a lower stress day and go to bed early
7-drink herbal tea, cranberry juice, or any other non alcohol beverage as a substitute
8-eating a snack, even if it has to be sugary, helps
9-stabilizing brain chemicals by doing daily exercise to boost "feel good" hormones
10-celebrate small successes by buying something small, nice (ie: an exercise top, a travel book, etc)....this helped me learn to reward myself
11-put a note on the fridge stating your day's goals
12-patience as progress can be very gradual (for me it was)...and acceptance that progress may wind up looking like 1 step forward, 2 steps back...just the way it is!
13-reducing other stressors in the home as much as possible
14-belief and understanding that today is our day to create the way we want it..

2 months ago, I had some wine bottles and boxes stashed away instead. And every day I worried, what if I croak and my family finds these? Now, worry (about this) is all gone. If they find this stash, they can just enjoy it and not judge me.9

Thanks everyone for the support and suggestions. I am kind of in shock. My job had been going so well and I was very happy with it. Now it feels like everything is shaken.
I had a breakdown yesterday and spent most of the day in bed. I realized I had to get it together. The good news is last night I didn't drink, I just had my tea. That is a good start.
My husband is actually on a work trip this week, he left this morning before dawn and won't be back until late Friday night. I have been terrified about him being gone, with my state of depression and trying to hold everything together with telecommuting (I am still working a little bit) and homeschooling and our farm chores. But actually, I think it was good that he is gone because with him gone I am forced to get it together. I woke up today and after feeding the animals and having my coffee, I did a quick yoga practice. It felt good since I haven't exercised in days.
My goal for this week is to take things day by day, and avoid all alcohol. It is too much for me right now to think about the future or even speculate on what I will do in the absence of an income. I need to just focus on each day for a while until I can get my mental health to stabilize.
