@skippygirlsmom Now, that is shoe porn overload. I'm curious, are your running shoes all the same model or do you have various kinds. I'm sure you have trail and road, but I'm asking like are all of your road shoes Brooks Adrenaline or do they vary? My new shoes are Brooks Launch 6. Is that what you have? Ran in them this afternoon - see below.

@kgirlhart That's a great pace, especially for an easy run!

Sounds like you had a nice run this morning @katharmonic . Sometimes I'll do an out and back for the same reason - once I'm at the furthest point, I have no option but to do the same distance home.

Had the first run in my new shoes this afternoon. I did a treadmill run. These shoes are the Brooks Launch 6. My old ones are Brooks Adrenaline. They are a lot different in how they feel. The biggest difference I could tell right away is that there isn't as much rise in the hill, if that makes sense. Also, during my warm up walk, I felt like the arch support was in the wrong place for my foot, but once I started running, that felt better. I can also feel it in my shins a little, so I don't know if that is the shoe or something else. And, oddly enough, after the run, sitting here at the computer, I'm having a weird muscle spasm on the top of my foot. It's probably all nothing and I'm just noticing things because I'm paying more attention. I will use them for all of my runs for a week and then decide on whether to keep them or send them back and go back to the Adrenalines.

I did a fast finish run today - 25 minutes easy followed by 10 minutes moderate effort. I continued on at an easy effort to get in 3.1 miles. (I meant to stop at 3.0 miles, but I was already past that point when I looked at the console.) I also walked a mile.

@quilteryoyo the Launch is a 10mm drop compared to the 12mm of the Adrenaline so that would, I think explain why you feel it in your shins. Also the Adrenaline is a more cushioned shoe.

I mostly wear the Launch, in that rack are Launch 3 to Launch 7. I also have Brooks Ghost which I hate and keep threatening to give them to my friend who loves them, a pair of New Balance and Brooks Glycerin 12 which I wore a lot then they changed them and I hated them. I wear those when it's pouring. I have Brooks, Salomon (love), Hoko (not a big fan) and 2 pair of Montrails (one per Columbia buying them (best ever) and one post) ha ha. What I love about the Launch is honestly I don't even need to try them on, Launch size 8 and I always love them.

Woah. I'm so boring, I have 3 pairs of Asics Gel Kayano lol. One pair is a mens 25 size 8, the other two are womens 9.5D 26. At first I didn't like the 26 as much but they have grown on me haha.

Well my first run without my watch. I hate it. Lol. And I'm really unimpressed with map my run. So I'm going to try Run Keeper. I don't think it was particularly accurate, though it wasn't way off. Though I'm confident the calories are way out.

Oh well, the merino was awesome!! Love live the smart wool socks. I don't need any more socks but my golly its tempting to get some more, they are so so comfortable! And I wore the long sleeve merino as it was a cool 8 degrees C this morning. I definitely was warm enough, actually got a bit too warm at the end of the run, though not uncomfortably so. So I'm a merino convert! Who would have thought, wool for running...

I have one more run using an app before my 26k this weekend, sigh. Well at least the audio worked fine.

@Avidkeo The accuracy of the apps is highly dependent on your phone's GPS accuracy which is, IME, not normally as good as the Garmin watches.

As for calories... you might just have to fall to the default 110/mile (or however that converts to KM) and go with that for now.

There are two schools of thought on this...

Some people buy the exact same shoe every time until they have to find a new model because it no longer exists. They tend to argue that they know that shoe works well for them and they do not have to risk getting the "wrong shoe" and getting hurt.

Other people argue that changing the brand of shoes every time you replace them is better because even if the shoes have the same specs they are all a little different and exercise your foot a little differently which reduces the chance of injury by helping to keep things more balanced.

As for me? Eh, I buy what I can get on sale cause money. :)

@skippygirlsmom and @PastorVincent . Thanks for your responses. I was wondering if changing shoe models during the week messes you up or helps you. I guess, as with everything else in running, there is no one answer that works for everyone.

Forgot to post this morning and had a lot of catching up to do...

@katharmonic, condolences for the loss of your cousin. You’re right, this is a lovely group. The achievements, the camaraderie, and all the nature/doggie/running shoe pics make it such a good place to be.

Speaking of shoe pics @quilteryoyo I really love those! Very jealous

@kgirlhart - great job on the HM!

I ran around 5.5 miles this morning. I went out with no clear plan other than to do at least 4 miles, then when I got out there it was gorgeous running weather so I said I’d do an hour, but with no pressure either way. And it was lovely!

    May goal: 60 miles
    May total: 29.7 miles

    1/5: Strength training
    2/5: 4.2 miles
    3/5: Strength training
    4/5: 4 miles
    5/5: Strength training
    6/5: 5 miles
    7/5: Strength training
    8/5: 4.8 miles
9/5: Strength training, zoom yoga class
    10/5: 6.23 miles
    11/5: Strength training
    12/5: 5.5 miles

    April: 115 m
    March: 76.4 m
    February: 17.8 m
    January: 0

Here's my running collection. I swap them almost daily.

Is this what happens when you or a family member works at a running store?😂 Very dangerous!!

Also the Adrenaline is a 'support' shoe while the Launch is 'neutral'.

So question for the group... when you go to buy running shoes do you look at the 'type' of shoe (support, neutral, minimal), drop and cushioning before you buy or just go by feel?

I used to just go by feel until I found out the 'support' shoes were not really right for me and the PT directed me to 'neutral' shoes. I always look at that now as well as the drop because I like them lower and that usually means lower cushioning too.

    Thanks @Faebert and @quilteryoyo!

I'm boring when it comes to shoes. I had my gait checked once at a running store and now I just order those same shoes every time. I probably should get my gait checked again, but the nearest running store is 60 miles away. They are open, but they are only doing curb side pick up, no gait analysis right now anyway.

@shanaber The reason I got the Adrenalines to begin with was that at one point I was told I overpronate. But, when I did the "test" that Brooks has online, It seemed to me that I did not. I was wondering if running corrected that issue. Don't know if that is possible or not. Research required. So, as for the question, I think I look for type of shoe first. I'm just not seasoned enough to know what I like or what is best for me yet.

Now my daughter has training shoes which are more cushioned and a work horse and will take a lot of miles and race shoes which are lighter and not made for day to day mileage. All New Balance but different models.

I tend to stick with my Brooks Ghosts. They fit my foot well. I have a pair of Brooks Launch but I don't find them comfortable for running anything over 4 miles. I've tried another kind of Brooks which I can't remember the name but they were so chunky and heavy compared to the Ghosts. I've branched out to Hoka's a couple of times. Ended up hating them both times. I used to wear Asics but found the Ghosts fit better. So, I just stick with what fits my foot and doesn't cause me issues.

I used to be a what can I get on sale person, until I kept running into problems. I got fitted, and the Asics Gel Kayano was what worked best for me. Now I only get injury when my shoes are nearing the end of their running life. I've tried other shoes from time to time but it always resulted in injury. So I stick to the Asics now. They haven't set me wrong at all, and I've bought several pairs now without trying them on first and I've had no issues at all. 0

I’m the same as your daughter. Heavier durable NB for training, lighter ones for events.

I read somewhere (Runner'sWorld maybe) a while back that a lot of people who think or are told, by non-medical analysis, they over pronate and need support shoes and/or orthotics, don't. Based on what my PT said things do change overtime as you run and your 'chain' from hips to feet gets stronger. I don't know if that would affect pronation or not. I do know with all the strengthening exercises they gave me I was able to stop wearing my orthotics without issue and wear normal 'neutral' shoes. I suspect I probably still pronate to some degree but everything is stronger so it isn't causing me any issues now.

I've tried a few different shoes in the past. I wore Saucony for quite a while then developed problems with them. I can't remember the exact model that was recommended to me at a fitting and it turned out to be very wrong for me - I had terrible tendonitis in my ankle/side of my foot. I saw a podiatrist and she told me that the support shoe was all wrong and I needed a neutral shoe. She made a few recs and I used New Balance 880s (I think) and Brooks Glycerin for a while. Then I tried the Brooks Ghost and I liked it better - it's a lighter shoe. I've stuck with the Ghosts for the past year or so because I'm afraid to mess around with it. Even though there appear to be no discounts on them ever.

Other than the ghosts, the only other shoes in my current rotation are two different pairs of Saloman trail shoes. One is a Speedcross gortex shoe and the other is a Supercross that is lighter weight and supposed to drain much better. I haven't tested the supercross a whole lot but I love the Speedcross. I also have Altras that I hate. They are zero drop and that did not work for me when I ran in them for longer distances. I had a lot of pain and hard recovery after doing 13+ miles in those so I won't wear them again.
