@katharmonic The 5K average a day is enough for me. I said I'm in no hurry to get there I want my monies worth out of the race. I said the same about the virtual but it's a combination here of wanting to help our Fleet Feet that was closed for a couple months and I signed up for another run as many as you can because the race director and I are friends and I know it's hurting him not having races.
@shanaber I can't imagine 8 hours a day. So one guy a typical day is 2 mile walk with the dog at 5 am, then at 5:30 or 6:00 am he runs 15 miles (like 2.5 hours worth), then at 9:30 am he walks another 15 miles, seriously he'll do 30 miles before lunch, then more after dinner. Last night he went our for .75 because he was under 40 and wanted to make the 40. The worst part is you can see on Strava that it's the same streets and he's not in a big neighborhood so you'll see the lines going over and over and over again and again...can you saying boring. Right off people questioned it and the race directors verified it.
Man if you were giving me a car maybe, a gift card not so much.
@bearly63 Skip had that problem and had to switch shoes. The Fleet Feet here was curb side and you couldn't go in for a while. They opened the end of last week with all kinds of precautions that the mother ship made them do, they moved things around the store, you need (or should) call for an appointment to be fitted or you might be standing outside a while, they are giving masks if you don't have one and have sanitizer as you go in the door and all throughout the store. I have to run down there tomorrow to pick up a couple race shirts and one of Skip's medals so I'll see for myself. The pick up is on the sidewalk.

@skippygirlsmom for the weight training, I set my garmin to weight lifting, then ignore the reps/sets etc cause they are Pita. I only do about 20 mins of weights per session and get about 100 - 140 calories burned for the session depending if I manage to keep my HR up (boxers shuffle between each set, gives you a little cardio as well!). I figured that's probably as accurate as I'm going to get.
Atm while my watch is away, I'm not tracking cause I can't figure out how to add it to MFP without doing all the individual weights. Because it's so few, I just keep it in mind. That said, I always do a good walk before I do weights as a bit of a warm up, and MFP gives me way to many calories for the walk - probably about 100 too many - so it balances out in the end.2 -

That runnig seems incredibly dodgy, especially to go from nothing to running that kind of distances. And at a reasonable pace too. How did they verify I wonder? Maybe he is cycling or something. But as you say, determination will do wonders.
@bearly63 I eventually get small holes in my shoes, but over the big toe area, and I say eventually because it happens long after they have been retired as running shoes, and are nearly retired as walking shoes. I would worry about fit it that was happening in my running shoes, and it looks like it's the middle toe? Very odd!2 -
Just finished breakfast and going out soon for 13k/8m. Tomorrow is another big one! 26k/16m. Not worried about it at all. I know I'll be able to do the distance, just a case of running it now!
Trying different running aps and they all suck. None of them do what I want. And even worse none of them upload to strava, what's with that! Why do I have to do it manually. So so so annoying! So today I'm going to use strava. At least there is one less step. I miss my watch so so much. This basically answers the question of am I ready to let it go. No, no I'm not. However I may keep using it as just a running watch rather than an all day watch. It's been nice to be free of notifications, and I'm saving money since I have to actually remember to have my wallet on me again.2 -
@avidkeo I thought the same thing about him biking and having whatever he's using to track set on run. I did got and find him he ran one marathon last year and his time would work out to what he is saying, at least that's the 2nd place guy. The first place guy seems to be more of a cyclist. I think it's weird too.
Skip has noticed that her Strava calories and Garmin calories don't match which is really weird because strava is pulling the data from Garmin.2 -
@shanaber Thanks. The only group homes that I know of around here are for those with intellectual disabilities. But, I will check with the nursing home and the VA to see what options are available. Hopefully, they can help.

I was scheduled to do my first hill repeats today and was actually looking forward to it. But, life threw a curve ball, as it often does. The tree-trimmers for the power company cut trees at the end of my driveway yesterday. I have a gate that I keep locked most of the time that just covers my driveway. I let the area to the left of the gate "grow up" so that no one could drive around the gate. Well, in an effort to do a superb job, they cut down that overgrowth. So, today my dad and mom helped me build a section of wooden fence in that area so it doesn't look so open/tempting. Dad is 88, so we took it slow and took a 3 hour break for lunch and his afternoon nap. I didn't want to run then, so played on the computer instead. Trying to decide if I want to do the hill repeats tomorrow, and mow the lawn or just mow. I plan to do my long run on Saturday, so will probably just skip it tomorrow and cross train pushing the mower.7

Hello runners! Tried to catch up. Lots of interesting discussions, some sad news (so sorry @katharmonic ) and some good shoe porn!
I have only still been walking (and riding a lot on Peloton). Hoping for a maiden voyage on Sunday, where I will do a run/walk for a short distance and see how the hip feels. The Doc told me to go by how it feels but tbh, I am nervous since I usually hurt a little after most workouts even before the the stress fracture. Guess I am not a spring chicken.
I am hoping to hit up Fleet Feet and get fitted for proper shoes. Not sure what is going on here in TX. The state is starting to reopen but the city is extending "stay safe" at home so that confusing. Since I mainly run on a flat gravel trail, I guess I will look at trail shoes but I also walk/run on streets lately. And I do have orthotics since I pronate and have totally flat feet. The shoe fitter will have fun trying to fit me. Need to find an experienced one.
question? Do any of you end up with toe holes? This happens in every pair of shoes I have ever worn. I keep my nails short. Warning: Old shoe porn alert:
My grandmother, mother and sister all do that to shoes - it's simply the shape of their toes.1 -

Ooooo @skippygirlsmom this is awesome! and makes me feel better about my own research. I was leaning towards horizon treadmills myself. And have definitely not done the deep dive this person did. And I had gotten a bit concerned I was being overly influenced by price point. I had actually been looking at the 7.0 today, because on the horizon site it is showing as on significant sale for $999, but it is also still out of stock.... while the very similar looking (need to do a closer comparison) 303 model, is on less of a sale, but in stock, and also listed for $999. And also weighs less, which living alone and as often as I seem to move would be nice, providing the lighter weight doesn’t seem to sacrifice stability or durability.
@pastorvincent I have started leaning towards this fiscally irresponsible decision, because I live in BFE.... the used market is very limited. I’ve been keeping an eye on it for about 18 months. Looked at one, belt slipped significantly at a slow jog.
Most that get advertised are Walmart specials - as that is the only place to get one in person around here.... and the rare listing with a 3.0 motor, they want pretty pennies for.... even when it isn’t gym closed pandemic times. And if I’m going to spend $800+ then I convince myself I may as well be starting new- which may very well be false logic... so feel free to call me out!
But also, in the current environment, not dealing with small town people who think a certain virus is a hoax, to acquire something from their home... seems like a good idea... also why a fire got lit to re-pursue owning my own, as I’m not sure if and when my physical therapy/gym location will reopen the gym portion...let alone when that will seem like a viable/smart option to me.3 -
Hey all. Well much preferred strava overall. At least it seemed mostly accurate, except the calories, which I can live with lol. It was a fantastic run! All the extra calories I ate over the last few days bahaha. It was just nice, calm and lovely.
26k tomorrow!10 -
Weekly race report! Finally got in my 8 miler which is the final race in the Run the 901 Challenge. So I’m done with the series!
Going in I knew my knee had been sore ever since my previous 8 mile long run, so I planned to take it extra easy and try not to do the same thing a second time. Since I ran the first run easy at 11 minute pace and ended up injured, I set myself a limit - no faster than 11 minute pace overall, slower if necessary, walking if the knee started hurting. My goals (with the caveat that if I started feeling actual pain all goals would be abandoned) were to run at least the first 4 miles with no walk break, and do the whole run in under 12 minute pace (which for me on roads isn’t a running pace, it includes some walking).
My husband and I went down to our usual railroad access road, which was pleasantly blocked off today even more thoroughly than last time, so no one could drive around the traffic barrels. This left the road free for foot and bike traffic, which today was just us, two cyclists, and an elderly couple strolling. The lack of people out and about was probably because it was hot as blazes. Or it felt that way anyhow - last time we ran was the middle of a cold snap and it was 41 degrees. Today it was 86 with a dew point of 67, aka “yuck, I hate this,” weather. The temp came down as the sun descended but the humidity went up and the breeze died, so in terms of how it felt to run in, it stayed about the same. Fortunately there are trees lining both sides of the road so we got shade most of the way, but the heat was a serious handicap since we haven’t had time to adjust to it.
The access road is a little shy of 2 miles, so 8 is basically an out and back twice, with a little left over. We did our first four miles on pace (actually a little fast) with no walk breaks as planned, but by the time we reached our second turnaround we were both dripping sweat and open mouthed panting. My husband informed me he was feeling chills, which for him is the first sign of getting overheated, and my muscles were starting to do that thing where they shut down to stop you from hurting yourself. So we took ample walk and water breaks during our second half. Finished in 1:32:16 with a pace of 11:31, so pretty much bang on between 11 and 12. Finished “fast” after the final turnaround which I see from my data was about a 9 minute pace, which is honestly better than I expected given that our tongues were hanging out from the heat by that point. Ah, Memphis, I love ya, in another two months I will be remembering today’s weather with fond longing!
Got home and had a celebratory post-race party for ourselves, courtesy of my friend who owns the gyro shop. He is just the nicest person I know, seriously. We ordered sandwiches in advance so we would have food when we got home, and he recognized our name on the order so our two sandwiches arrived with FOUR pieces of homemade baklava, baba ghanoush, a side dish of spicy chickpeas and rice, plus a bottle of hand sanitizer! And “I miss you guys,” with a smilie written on the box. And then he apologized for not sending any of the cookies I like because it’s Ramadan so he hasn’t made them.
Series is over, so I finally get to wear my race shirt:10 -
@rheddmobile Yeah for finishing your series! Also, sounds like you had the best plan for the 8 miles. You did great!1

@Elise4270 Good article! My distal phalanges on my toes must be overcompensating. Who knew!
@rheddmobile @shanaber @skippygirlsmom Thanks for your input....as far as toes goes (lol).
Got an appt. at Fleet Feet for next Tuesday for a fitting. I told the nice guy that I was not going to be your run-of-the-mill customer (no pun intended) and he just laughed. I will be taking my last few pairs of holy (holey) shoes with me so we can also look at the wear pattern.
@quilteryoyo I'm impressed that your 88 year old dad is out there working. That is fantastic.
@avidkeo Sounds like fueling up worked for your run!
@rheddmobile Congrats on finishing your series! Your friend and his food sounds wonderful! Glad that he is able to keep going during "these uncertain times". We keep hearing about old favorites here in Austin shutting down. Such a bummer.2 -

If a used dreadmill is $800 and a brandy new one is $1000, I would get the brandy new one also. I do think as "stay at home get lifted" more dreadmills will hit the used market though.
If you will regularly use said dreadmill and you have the free cash to buy one, I do not think you are being fiscally irresponsible. Now if you are putting it on a credit card with 25% interest and plan to pay only the min payment and never actually use the dreadmill... that is a different story.1 -

Strava just pulls in the GPS and HR data, then does its own math on it that is why you will end up with different times and distances too.0 -
I am signed up for a 25K trail race tomorrow in MS. But yesterday, started having stomach issues that ended up ruining my run. Similar to what I have had before, but more severe. Anyway, I ate lunch yesterday and was contemplating whether I eat today at all. I decided it can't be much worse than what I am experiencing, so I may as well. Had a small meal as my last before the race. I hate runner's stomach.
At some point I will catch up my ticker for last night and Wed.8
