Guys, I just went online to change my registration from a full marathon to the half, and they want to change me for the change, and no refund to the difference.
Is this normal? Wellington let me change for free and will refund the difference.
I'm not expecting a refund of the difference, but an additional charge kinda stinks?
Yeah, unfortunately that is common. In my experience, past a certain date they will charge for changing races.0 -
@janejellyroll Sorry for your loss. It never gets easier, even though we know it will happen for everyone.
@Avidkeo I’ve never changed a race myself, but I have seen where they would not provide a refund for changing. It stinks!1 -
Yesterday was supposed to be a rest day, but I couldn’t sit still, so I did just half an hour on the stationary bike for something.1

Yes, that is normal for every race I have had to try a change in.
The reason is often in part because the price of the race itself has gone up since you registered. That and it is an administrative mess if too many people do it, so the charge discourages people from being willy-nilly about it.1 -
4 miles this morning. Another hot one (81F), but humidity better (66%), and dew point only 70F.

Cloudy, low 70s F, and humid today. If the sun had been out I think it would have been very difficult. Back hurt last night from golf, but it popped during the night and was fine this morning. The first k today was the most enjoyable run I've had in a long time. Niggles started catching up later, but it was still nice to run virtually pain free. I had almost forgotten what that felt like.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2020 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs
Run at least 4 5k races
Get a 5k PR
Average at least 138k per month, to meet my Run the Year pledge of 1,020 miles
Stretch goal: If I can average 169k per month, I can run 2020k in 2020
Run the Year Team: Pavement Pounders
2020 races:
9-19 Race for the Parks 5k, Hudson, OH
10-11 Haunted Hustle 5k, Aurora, OH4 -
0716-5k, total-40.2k goal-80k
It was hot and sunny. Yep, pretty bad.
@janejellyroll Feeling for you. I don't think we are ever really ready to let go.
@katharmonic That sounds brutal! Kudos for finishing the workout.4 -
@Tramboman Glad you are virtually pain free!
You all know I am NOT a morning person. But, I have been getting up earlier a few days lately to play tennis. Yesterday morning, when I took the dog out at 6 am, it was so nice, almost chilly feeling at 60°F. So, that motivated me to get up early this morning to run. Imagine my disappointment when I looked at the thermometer at 6 and it was 74°F! Really! Why did I even bother?
I ate a banana and had a couple cups of coffee and got out of the house at 7:10. Garmin said it was 73°F with 83% humidity - I think it was warmer than that. I didn't look at my back porch thermometer before I went out. Anyway, it was miserable. I am not following my plan this week - just getting out the run when I can. I had planned to run 4 miles. I just couldn't do it. I felt like I was overheating, even though I was running slower than the box turtle I moved off the driveway on my first lap. So, changed the plan to run 45 minutes and stop. I wound up running 3.25 miles and walking one. I'm glad it's done. Just wish it had been cooler to reward me for getting up early. According to the app on my laptop, when I finished it was 80°F, 71% humidity, feels like 84°F.
We're going to move my cousin into the assisted living this afternoon.

Sigh I get that. I'd happily forgo the difference, it's the extra charge that stings.
Adds insult to injury 😉

Officially registered for my next half-marathon! My city has a permanent course set up so you can run an officially timed race whenever. It’s not as fun as a race with all the people and excitement but crowds aren’t the best idea right now. Planning to run it the last week in August.5 -

I ran another 10K this morning. There isn't much to say about it except that it was hot. I'm really ready for a break in this heat wave. Day after day of temps over 100°F in the afternoon and lows in the low to mid 80's is really starting to get old. My feet are starting to get tired and achy so I guess it's time for new shoes. I didn't have any dogs bother me on my run this morning, but I did have a couple of dogs pestering me when I was doing my post run yoga this morning. All three of the dogs were laying too close to my mat this morning and then at the end when I was doing supine twists my collie just plopped herself down on my arm. Then during shavasana she put her paws on my arm and when I ignored her she started tapping me on the arm about every 3 seconds (which she often does when she wants some attention). Then when I continued to ignore her she started licking my palm and at that point the corgi decided to get in on the action and started licking my ear. I gave up on trying to relax at that point and just got up. It was both annoying and funny.
These are my two pests.Tomorrow will be a rest day for me. I can't decide if I am looking forward to it or not. On the one hand I think I could use some rest. But on the other hand I sometimes feel discouraged and more tired on days that I just sit around and do nothing. I will do some yoga tomorrow (if the dog's will let me ) so I won't really do nothing. I wish I had something to look forward to this weekend, but my family reunion that should have been this weekend was cancelled this year and it is really just too hot to do any work around the house or in the yard.

Hey everyone, brand new to the group but not to running. I'm hoping for at least 275 miles for the month. As of right now I'm at 139 miles to date so only slightly behind. Good luck to everyone getting their goals!!8
-
I have been away for a few days and just caught up on 5+ pages of posts...
@InkedAtty57 - Welcome back! How is the running going? So how many pairs of running shoes are you up to now? I have managed to creep up to 4 pairs in regular rotation, 2 pairs of trail shoes and 1 pair in reserve 😁 No where near your epic level of running shoe hoarding though!
@ContraryMaryMary - the watermelon cake is fantastic!
@pastorvincent - the greenhouse is coming along great. Do you have to deal with other critters getting into your fruit and veggies? I now have raccoons, squirrels and as of last night possums all eating my nectarines as well as these terrible green beetles that have just discovered them 😱 I think they are done for the season and I only got about 6 off the tree and only because I picked them early and left them to ripen on the counter.
@skippygirlsmom - I also miss @mobycarp and think of him regularly. I remember his leg hops and hallway test runs while his eggs were cooking! He was such a great mentor and friend!
@Scott6255 - Happy (belated) Anniversary!
@marisap2010 - Love the new Launch shoes! I really need to try Brooks again and see if they are still too narrow for me. I am sure they are but I do love all the fun designs they have!
@pastorvincent - we are back to almost complete stay at home again already and I wouldn't be surprised it we get there in the next week or so. LA County is already talking about it and they would likely take us and other neighboring counties with them since there is so much cross travel and business.
@avidkeo - I am sure with cross training you will get right back into running. Just be careful to build up gradually and not reinsure your calf.
Can you defer your race to next year without charge or at a lower cost than changing it for this year?
@janejellyroll - it hurts regardless of how 'ready' we think we are. It is like in some small part of our brains we think they will recover and be fine even when we know that it is not at all possible! Sending you {{HUGS}}
@quilteryoyo - I am not a morning person and even though it is much cooler and we have marine layer clouds in the morning I cannot seem to get out the door early and it is always hot by the time I do. I just figure it is good for me to get adjusted and will make fall running feel that much better!
@Shortgirlrunning - that is awesome that they have a permanent course set up!
@deraffemikey06 - welcome to our group of running crazies! Looks like you will fit in just fine!
I was released last Friday to be able to walk so I have been getting out for a few neighborhood walks and out to the trail yesterday with Hobbes the Vizsla for a longer walk. He got over heated and we had to stop for a cool down on the way home. I knew he was hot when he headed on his own to the pool to sit in the water on the steps. We also got to run agility on Monday - it was hot and my shoulder area hurt but we had fun!
Also convinced my daughter to run the Blerch virtual with me but apart, in September!
Will post my walking miles so far for this month. I can start running a bit after the 24th depending on how it feels and back to everything by the end of August.9 -

Auckland Marathon is particularly good at charging. When I ran my first race with them, ferry tickets to the start were free and you got a free adidas event t-shirt, all for about $70. Now it’s near $120 for entry, plus $10 for the ferry, t-shirts are around $55, plus a $10 processing fee. This is what happens when an event gets sold to Ironman.
To be fair though, it must be a hugely expensive event to put on - the road closures alone are staggering when you think about it - they close two lanes of the Harbour Bridge, which is impressive that they can even do that - and we takeover the northern busway for half a day too, not to mention Tamaki Drive and Victoria Park.
It’s bloody expensive, but you’re not going to get a more impressive running event in NZ.4 -
Nice job on another 10k @kgirlhart and those are some adorable pests interrupting your yoga. Shavasana is also my favorite part of yoga (I'm always hopefully suggesting that class might be all shavasana) but it is definitely vulnerable to dog pestering.
@shanaber good to see you check back in and happy to hear you've been cleared to walk. Hobbes is looking good trying to cool down in the shade there.

This was a morning when I just did not want to run. I was up late last night and I'm super sore from my workouts the last couple of days. But the forecast was for thunderstorms later so I knew that if I put it off I would likely be even sorrier. I finally forced myself out around 8:30 am with a goal of a loop around the lakes that would get me at least 5 miles. It was very slow and not pretty. I stopped a few times and at the far end of the lakes debated who on my contact list would come and drive me home, but ultimately embraced the "forward is a pace" mindset and made my way back. At least there was a pretty nice breeze the whole time. Now that I'm home from work I'm of course glad I did it this morning even though the rain didn't amount to much yet.
This puts me at halfway to my goal for the month, so closer to being on track again.4 -

Yeah thats true. And compared to fees internally, it's not bad. And yeah shutting down that many roads in Auckland is definitely a big big task haha.
Next year! I'm not sure I'll be doing the half at this rate. I'm really really dumb and did some HIIT. I was being really careful, modifying anything that I thought would annoy the calf. But I did one split jump and jolted it or something, back to as sore as Monday.
So Im finally giving up. Cycling, walking and strength training only for 6 weeks. Be sensible.7 -
So I was in a rush, got all suited up for a quick run with only a small window to do it... got a few hundred yards (meters) down the street and realized I was running in my hiking boots and not my running shoes... 🤦♂️🤦♂️10

That is one of the primary reasons to build the greenhouse - so that we get to eat some of what we grow!

@kgirlhart
It's hot here, but not that hot. I feel for you. I love your two pests! Too cute.
Welcome @deraffemikey06 !
@shanaber
Hobbes is adorable. Glad you are getting out and walking more. You'll be running before you know it, and hopefully feel a lot better when you do.
@katharmonic
Way to hang in there and get it done. I love "forward is a pace."
@Avidkeo
Sorry your aggravated your calf again. Hopefully being sensible with work and it will be back to normal in 6 weeks.
We took my cousin to the assisted living facility this afternoon. He's going to be quarantined to his room for 5 - 10 days, until they get results from a CoVID test. After that, I think he will really like it there. He is happy so far - 5 hours into it. So, I guess that is something. It helps that he is in a room by himself for now. It is a shared room, so eventually he'll get a roommate. I hope when he does that they get along.7 -
Just checking in - rehabbing my knee, minimal running. Husband ran the ISS-20 virtual 5k while I walked. I have an infected tick bite (of the type that causes Lyme although it’s not common in my area) with a nasty low-grade fever, and can’t get a doctor for another week. I hope everyone is doing well, I need to read and catch up!
Speaking of raccoons this guy sits there cheeky as anything sifting my birdseed out of the dirt with his little fingers and eating it:8 -
@rheddmobile cutest little raccoon pose ever. Ugh, sorry another week before the doc. Any chance an urgent clinic can get you started on a broad spectrum antibiotic? I had a coworker with Lyme. It took him almost a year to get diagnosed and had to go to Missouri from Oklahoma to get it. Horrible. Be well.1
-
So I had a tempo test scheduled for yesterday - 15mins warm up, 7km at race pace, and 15mins cool down. It took long time to convince myself to get out - the weather has been dire here, super stormy with huge winds and torrential rain. However, the grandparents had the girls for the afternoon and the weather had calmed significantly so I stopped arguing with myself, put my shoes on and headed out.
During the warm up I was contemplating just doing an hour aerobic, or maybe half an hour - my head wasn't in it at all and I felt a bit nauseous (fuelling on leftover birthday mayn't have been my best idea), but I then reasoned, if I didn't do it today, my coach would only make me do it next week, so when my watched beeped at me, I upped my pace and began my test.
Well, my head was arguing the whole way and my stomach wasn't happy, however, my legs were doing their job and I was pleasantly surprised at my pace at the 1km mark - 5:04, and I know my last tempo test had started slower. At 2km I was 5:00 on the button. Still battling in my brain and still feeling like I wanted to hurl, the kilometres clicked over, faster and faster - the next 5km were all sub-5 minute pace and I finished feeling fab, smashing my previous tempo test by 10 seconds per kilometre.
TL:DR Head said no, legs said yes. Listen to the legs.11 -
Also convinced my daughter to run the Blerch virtual with me but apart, in September!
Yay! What distance will you do? I’m doing the half.
@rheddmobile I would try to get into an urgent date since the tick bite is causing a fever. Cute raccoon.
I had plans last night, but I squeezed in about half an hour of speed work before I left. There is a section of my neighborhood with no houses that is a little over 100m long, so I just did sprints along with a warm up and cool down. It has just rained, and steam was rising off the street. So glad it is the weekend so I can get in some cooler morning runs.
3 -
@rheddmobile I also think you should try to go to an urgent care clinic and get some antibiotics. If you start them quickly, they can stave of Lyme. That's a really cute raccoon.
@ContraryMaryMary Great tempo test and way to overcome the mental battle.0 -
Going to urgent care at the moment would be a death sentence for me - if I get covid I’m most likely dead, and we are having a surge of health-care transmitted infections. My friends who work in health care locally have stories about health care professionals not wearing masks, or taking the insides of the mask out so it looks like they are when they really aren’t. If I am in danger of death I would risk it but not until.4
