Really enjoying this thread. BARBIE sorry I forgot you were NW. I consider BC Pacific NW. So interesting where everyone is from and share a common goal of taking responsibility for our fitness. I love there is no judgment about body shapes and what our goals might be. I know AARP considers 50 seniors, but that is to make more money. Some places here have senior discounts for 55, others 60, and 65, but most no discount at all. I always forgot to ask for it. My last hairdresser always gave it to me and I left her the savings as a tip on top of my regular tip.
Having trouble with my eyes being out of sync this morning. I don't see any floaters that the specialist says is the problem as both eyes focus and are clear individually. The left eye is 50% peripheral vision loss due to glaucoma. I hope I haven't overlooked replying to anyone. I am amazed at how fast-moving this thread is. I love wearing skirts although I seldom do anymore. I think this was the last time I used foundation and highlighting blush. It made me look so pale. Also, I retired those awful glasses. I was going to the graduation of a friend's granddaughter, so I got all spiffed up. I remember my grandma calling it getting all spruced up and my mother saying all dolled up.

I have been trying to make lemonade out of quarantine. This shift in lifestyle offered me a perfect time to make some positive changes for myself. Working from home allows me to use my commuting time for better purposes, and i have added what I call "wogs" to my morning and evening, with mileage adding up to over 4 miles per day. I am trying for more jog, less walk. What began as a major change is now a habit that I enjoy. Lemonade!
I am frustrated by plateaus in my weight loss. I am not sure if this is my age, or my body freaking out at a fair amount of weight lost, but it seems like even when I am operating at a significant deficit calorie, my weight levels off for weeks at a time.
I have added a couple of weight bearing/HIT type workouts a couple of times a week. Do others have this same challenge. How the heck do I break through the plateaus? I don't want to become discouraged or lose sight of my long term weight loss and health goals. Thanks for your insights.2 -
Faye - I think the expression here is "You scrub up well!" I like to 'put my face on', which I don't do often enough. Without my face I look too much like my mother, in my opinion. Plus OLD. Getting dolled up really cheers me up, but I'm too lazy to do it unless I have to. Luckily DH loves me whatever I look like.
I am quite competitive and don't like to look the worst in the room. I like to wear age neutral clothes. Brighton and Hove is a very fashionable area and I do like to blend in with the 'with it' crowd, as we used to call it. I won't wear all the stuff young people wear, (not too much saggy flesh visible), but I try not to wear things that they wouldn't wear. That is a huge motivation to stay in the normal weight range. Right now I would like to lose just a few pounds.

The way I found to break through the plateaus was patience and keep doing what you have been, but explore new routines for areas you want to target. Consider where your weight is and do what is best to target that area. Maybe think about the balance of your diet as opposed to calories. Make sure your body is using its fuel efficiently. Excercise should produce muscle and not fat, so maybe a plateau in weight is you have replaced fat with muscle.

Ginny, I’m glad your daughter-in-law is recovering, but so sorry to hear she had it. You must have been very worried.
Celebrations: usually I’d have driven up to spend time with family or gone on a solo 1 or 2 day road trip, such as Portland and back, or out to the Strait or to the ocean beaches at Westport. Going fishing is something I want to take up again. Treating myself to a movie that deserves a large cinema screen is something I hope to be able to do again soon.
Insects! i desensitized myself to spiders by studying them, watching videos of them spinning their webs, etc. Ants I see very rarely. What REALLY bugs me are the slugs that crawl in under the screen doors on my sleeping porch. Bella tried eating a couple and promptly threw up or I’d have not known what was wrong. I think I’ll try the aluminum foil under the door where there’s a space at the bittom. I’m still afraid of stinging insects, although not bees of any sort. Getting stung by a Yellowjacket once convinced me I don’t want to observe them or hornets closely. I’m no longer afraid of crane flies, but am terrified of mosquitos mostly because any bite I get turns into an open weeping sore after the bump stage. I must have an allergy, I guess. Plus there all the diseases they carry nowadays.
Sharon Near Seattle and still awake at 5:30am I have no idea why I occasionally throw myself under the bus like this. Probably boredom.
Sharon,
My cousin who grew up in Lake Stevens, WA hates those big slugs you have up there. They had huge ones in their yard and it would drive her crazy seeing them. Even as an adult/mom, she still hates them. They still live up there but not in Lake Stevens(can't remember the town) but my aunt and other cousins still live there.1 -

Another week already just about over. Trying to read all the posts.
I hope everyone is doing well and have a wonderful weekend.
I have been busy making more masks. My former brother in law's wife(they were not married when I was married to his brother) ordered 11 masks- will deliver them tomorrow, then stop off at MIL's neighbor because she wants more then what ever I have left, my daycare girls' mom wants to take them to work to sell them there. Never ever expected to be still making them. I had to order more elastic and velcro(I do different types) plus bought a bunch more fabric. Still need to get more done, including another for husband(new fabric and make it a little bigger)
I have been doing good on my food intake for the most part- only went over 1000 cal once- yesterday and only by 100.
Exercise has not been much this week- need to work on it.
Going to be a bit of an emotional day- today would be my best friends birthday- we were best friends from the day we met in 5th grade, through high school, college and even had the same career. She past away at 38yrs old. In Nov. it will be 20 yrs that she has been gone- still get weepy when I think of her. She would be so excited with all her grandkids she has now.
Break is over , time to get back to the sewing machine.
Have a great weekend everyone

Lanette ...I just read an article from the NIH in regard to melatonin and immunity ... very interesting. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7211589/?fbclid=IwAR2Tf7DgpQp2aJ1Cq_qeeWt6cjKc7qNojuBajs_2dJctvNDX44jQ15Hpb10
Have been making good choices for the last few days in regard to diet, but then just blew it a few minutes ago. Sigh. I'm tired and stressed today and that always seems to be my undoing.

Katla Yes, the fall can really change views in the PNW.
Heather Scrub up must also be used in Australia. I was on a job many years ago as an engineer, developing ways of drilling and blasting for the lowest cost. I sweat so much that all the dirt stuck to me and I was a real mess The first time our site geologist from Australia saw me off work at a company party he said, "Wow Fayers you really scrub up nicely." He always added ers to everyone's name.1 -

Well my strainer to make sticky white rice finally fell apart, so had to go shopping for that. Wanted what I had, which was one that fit on the lip of a pot so I could wash the rice. Well Safeway didn't have it, not Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart did have a huge ladle type one so I bought that. Wanted to buy candy or cookies but nothing looked good. I bought stickers instead.👍

Rebecca Wow you are braver than me to shop in Walmart. I have been once since the shutdown.0

Rebecca: Stickers are great! High fiber and low calories. (Just kidding) They might be hard for some of us to digest. I have no idea what sorts of ink might be on those stickers but they're fun.
Back in the day when I was in high school, I sometimes nibbled on little bits of paper. It was a nervous habit. The teacher, Mr. Tate, always thought he would catch a gum chewer or note writer but was disappointed by a tiny, wet piece of paper. YUK. Mr.Tate did not notice that I was sitting by my best friend forever and we were using finger spelling throughout his class. She called me on my birthday this week. I can't express how nice it was to hear from her.2 -

I still haven't stepped foot in a Walmart either ... online ordering and curbside pick-up works just fine for me! There are only two grocery stores I will enter ... one of the local Aldi's that is doing a stellar job with disinfecting, social distancing, etc ... and our BJs Warehouse ... it's always empty! Everything else I need I order online and have delivered or pick-up curbside.

I am really careful, look with my eyes, and open caredoor with hands holding a wipe. Husband gives me a wipe when I get in. Hey we do what we gotta do.💖

Faye, Whidbey only has a handful of stores to choose from in the island, and we don't have the app where you can click and fill your virtual cart. Either we go and buy stuff or we go without I suppose.

Beth - interesting article, thank you! One study I ran across said .1 to .5 mg of melatonin per day (see chart below), another ( link I posted earlier) said 5 to 20 mg/day. So it's been fun looking at the different research - I always want to know "why". and I always look for multiple studies backing this info before I really dive in, lol.
Here is a dosage chart for melatonin developed by researcher Doris Loh. I can't put my hands on her original paper right now.
For what it's worth if anyone is interested. Again, this is NOT medical advice. I look at it as something to ponder. Some people have side effects from supplements so probably a good idea to discuss with a medical professional, especially if diagnosed with Covid!
I know sleep is important, so for the past couple weeks, an hour before bed, I've been taking magnesium, 2 mg melatonin, and about half a dropper (probably 8mg) hemp oil made by Plus CBD. Seems like the CDB oil helps me stay asleep, or at least get back to sleep for a bit if I need to get up to use the bathroom.
It seems to be doing the job.

Gail Ontario – welcome!
Vince came back from the doc. He has to go for an ultrasound and cat scan
Sheila – hi and welcome. Any time is a good time to join
Tina – I don’t feel like a senior but I’m more than willing to take a senior discount
Rori – (((big hug))))
Allie – I wish you could help Rori. You’d know exactly what to do
Amber – been thinking a lot of you. Thanks for popping in
Trader – ahhh…plateaus. You are supposed to change up the amount of calories you have (high one day, low the next), different exercises, different lengths of time for exercise (45 minutes, 1 hr),. I can tell you this helps. I know that if I don’t snack at night (which is hard for me) I’ll lose. But it’s so hard. Don’t obsess about weight, but about measurements. Della is right. Fat is being replaced with muscle
Peg – welcome! Of course you can join, you didn’t even have to ask. We’re glad to have you
Twiglet – welcome
Picked up donations for the soup kitchen from our church. I really thought it would take longer. So I went to the post office then the soup kitchen. When we were finished serving, someone was supposed to help unload the donations. Only he stood there with the cart while I put everything on the cart. Oh well. Then home and in the pool
I have begun to find WalMart home delivery to be a real time saver. Unfortunately, they have such a high minimum for free delivery (and I refuse to pay a delivery fee) plus there are some things I just don’t trust them to pick out. Another thing is that some items are only available at one WalMart and some at another one. I do like to go to Aldi. In a way, I like bagging my own groceries. I try to put all the frozen foods together
