Unusual these days ... but very nice.
I was married at 20 and 41.

"Get to do"s and "chose well"sChose well: Made appointment for next scan – February!, over three hours clearing paperwork, board meeting follow up and filing.
Bonus: reviewed Pet Adventures and posted, emailed Mariah about possible visit, transplanted basil, pulled weeds.
Get to do: public notice about CFPA, test firehouse voicemail recording, BB&B, make reservation for Eugene trip, declutter last 2 desktop items, declutter sideboard, bottle return, start baking cookies for visit, transplant and sow, practice new dances (Turning Tables, Nothing but You, Shake it like that, Larger than Life, Here I Go Again/Mama Mia, Real Deal, Get it Right); transplant bean, make garlic almonds for Barb and Dan; prep potato area and raised beds for beets, carrots, parsley root, parsnips, radishes and sow; finish weeding drive, continue weeding flower bed, mulch flowerbed; Freddie’s for complete series TDAP <$48, get Shingrix vaccine. Reward: inventory seeds, plan fall cool season garden, order replenishments. Altruistic August
20: Look for the good side in everyone you meet today: That would be the dermatologist’s scheduler, a cheerful competent gal, and Joe who is grieving in his own way.
One of the poops, uh er, pups has an icky tummy. Yesterday some disastrous diarrhea. Last night vomit and more diarrhea. Thought it was Shadow, but further investigation of her nether regions discovered it was Tumble. She ate nothing this morning (not unusual) but finally did eat a little this evening, but turned her nose up at a dog cookie she usually enjoys. Hoping for a more peaceful night’s sleep tonight.
Belated welcome @wruper I see you have a sense of humor!
Beth your FB “just me an advertisement for support bras” made me laugh! At 66 (now 70) was told I was too old to need a pap smear. You inspire me to find a gyn who will listen and do.
Oh Debbie, my heart breaks for the boy and the coworkers who tried to save him. And for you and your family. Just read the fires across Napa, Sonoma and Lake Counties total over 130,000 acres. Hope the humid heat isn’t “earthquake weather.”
Lisa glad your FB purge had the unintended good result of your daughter’s reaching out. You’ll have no problem finding winter calorie burning activities. Does it ever snow there? Do you have a wood burning fireplace? If all else fails I can see you building something…
Allie hope Homer’s appetite improves soon.
Rebecca sasquatch legs and the wind blowing through her hair The silver lining of my mild peripheral vascular disease is that I haven’t had to shave my legs for YEARS.
Vicki happy you got that motorcycle ride in. Sounds like it was much needed fun.
Kay what’s your “metabolic workout”?
Machka if you snooze someone, do they know it? the I before e coffee cup! I like trains too! I had my first birthday on a train.
Kim tough decision but you can’t afford to collapse from heatstroke so best to pause the gardening jobs. Praying for the firefighters and folks living near the fires.
Charsuzy 4am, yikes! What kind of work do you do?
Kylia Leo, Aubrey and Rocco!
Katla glad you’ve been able to ride Arrow. Why does your DH want a smaller RV? Is there no way your children could come and visit you? It just doesn’t sound like they understand the extent of your huband’s debility. Sorry to hear Ichabod’s demise. :’(
Barbie like you I have been grateful for my washer and drier since I got my first set, in 1987 when we got married. I swore a mighty oath: as God was my witness I’d never go to the laundromat again!
Carol, I’d take Old Age over masses and tumors any day . . . Hope you can now get some relief!
Annie sounds like you had a good time!
Pip your new digs and the collection, but especially that the car fits in the garage after such a short moving in time. You ROCK!
Heather “Our new normal, until there is a vaccine, is that we can't hug, touch, or even get really close to our grandchildren. That is my only real sadness. Everything else is just an inconvenience.” True this. Have no grandchildren but really miss hugging my friends.
Faye virus travels on gloves too. Best I can do is to bring a wipe in with me, keep it with my wallet, and wipe down the keypad or stylus or door handle or whatever I have to touch. Thinking to get some of that “veggie soap” to wash down produce I bring in, and to follow other’s practice of leaving dry goods outside in the sun and fresh air for a few hours before bringing inside. Most important is “Don’t touch your face” but that’s hardest for me. Has surgery been suggested for your glaucoma?
Rita besides spraying clove oil how will you encourage the rattler (and his family?) to evacuate? I’m shaking too! As for “What is Happening?” This from my goddaughter:
Lanette I do dry my wool socks on plastic coated hangers, but everything else goes into the drier.
Welcome back Betsy!
SueBDew good to see you popping in.
Cathy, I covet your Zumba gold and line dancing classes, but even if we had Zumba Gold here, I wouldn’t go, for now…
Michele, I’d have walked on water, no kidding! I’m truly impressed by your taking that job. No wonder you’re tired! I spritz my masks with white vinegar to which I’ve added a drop of essential thyme oil The vinegar and thyme are pretty strong smelling and the thyme oil is antiviral.
Tracey “What did you teach?” Hahahahahahahahaha!
Julie glad you were able to find so much to enjoy on your vacation.
SuziQ thank you. Think you’re right about the unresolved issues, Joe has been quite low key all day.
Sniffles gone but now throat tight. Taking an aspirin and heading for bed.
Lighter, lovelies!

Barbara,
Our rv has needed lots of work. It is currently doing better than last year. I think the idea of driving a big RV from western Oregon to Virginia is a huge undertaking for the majority of healthy people. DH has diabetes & MS. He doesn’t have the energy to be in the driver’s seat for long days. I have not driven it very often but if we drive I will do my share.
Bottom line, he doesn’t want to go by car or rv & he doesn’t want to fly. I want to go for the sake of our son & his wonderful family. We’re discussing what to fo.3 -

No, I'm pretty sure they don't know that you've snoozed them. Same with unfollowing. I wouldn't be surprised if people snooze me from time to time! Too much talk about bicycles and brain injury!

Friday's Walk
Distance: 4.55km
Elevation: 36m
Moving Time: 42:45
Pace: 9:23/km
After a cool but relatively nice week, winter is making a comeback this weekend. Windy with showers, snow down to 500 metres. They're predicting as much as 30 mm (1.18 inches) of rain over about 48 hours.
But it is still winter. Spring doesn't happen until September 1!!
So we might get on our indoor bicycles and Zwift! We'll see.

@Beth I hadn't heard about any paper shortages.0

Faye: oh wow, that is a big limitation. I haven't traveled more than 200 miles per day since October. I only went to the coast which is less than 200 miles away. I'm sorry about that. That must keep you close to the land. I am not that big on travelling these days. It's a must for me to go see family and friends and my homeland in the usa, from to time, so far, but I find more and more tiring.3

GLOVES AND GEL
I went to buy some masks upon doctor's orders at time of confinement since I had a slight cough. none available but the lady before me bought 100 latex gloves. so I bought some. I used them in the beginning to open door when I went out for a walk or go food shopping but finally I agree with the video posted above. it's easier (or rather still necessary) to wash hands with gloves on between touches, so the gloves don't do much. I carry gel and I don't remember to use it all the time but use it plenty when I stop some place.i'm glad when they have it available at shops and restaurants (most do). The hotel I was at didn't have gel available anywhere and I find that a real lack.they could charge an extra 2 euro surcharge for extra cleaning products (my hairdresser charges an extra 2 euros for covid cleaning of chairs between cuts and disposable paper smocks) and no-one would complain. Of course I wash hands much more than before but I'm not perfect long term.3 -
I did NOTHING yesterday. I lazed and then realised it was to be a very hot day and lazed some more. it didn't feel great way to spend the day but today is another day! Weight is up from this time last year but in a down fluctuation at least from some recent months and weeks. I didn't limit eating much when out but ate rather healthily: cereal in morning, fish dish for lunch and bought things like rice cakes carrot juice, cucumber, and the occasional small scoop of sorbet...

August goals revisitedFinancial Goals:
-As close as possible to zero-based budget. I have to check.i didn't spend a ton but hotel and eating out cost something.Transport was very cheap.200 euros car rental, 32+20 train,4.50 bus

- Get progressive glasses. (finally, i've been able to get by without glasses for reading till now, but it gets tough on very fine print). not yet.
- Get hiking sandals or something close. They were out of my size when I went to buy some. I managed very well between sneakers, hiking sneakers and flip-flops

Thanks Faye for the vestibular test. I got DH to do it this morning and he walked in a straight line. So did I.
Then we did the balance test of standing on one leg with your eyes shut. He found that much more difficult, but managed the average for his age, (nearly 75) - 3 seconds. He is resuming his balance exercises every morning. I managed 16 seconds Which puts me below 40 yrs. I do several balance exercises every day and have done for years.
Then I decided to do the sit down/stand up test. How many can you do in a minute. Anything above 36 is good. I did 45. So I will carry on with my daily exercise routine. Whenever I've done a test, heart rate recovery etc, I've come out in my late 40s. Long may it continue!
DH has aged quite a lot in the last 9 months. I really notice it. And he is a fitness fanatic. He is 4 years older than me and I can see how deterioration accelerates with age.
That frightens me a bit and I can see why covid affects the old so badly.
I have felt psychologically older since all this started.
Yesterday DH did a 2hr Killer Sudoku in 15 mins,so he's still got a few brain cells.
Much love to all. USE IT OR LOSE IT.

will have to keep a better eye on Faith her insulin dipped to 44 last night after Jean got home and she had to give her glucose pill and a couple cookies and her dinner..will have to feed her more often every 3 -4 hrs even if its a little something...that scares me, I don't want anything to happen on my watch..
will be up for the weekend ..so wont be home until 4;30 or so on Sunday5 -
Heather That is amazing and wonderful!
Barbara My thought on latex gloves is if everyone put on latex gloves when they entered the store and never touched their face and then disposed of them when they left, this would stop the spread in that store if also employees wore and changed them frequently. Surfaces would never be touched by dirty hands. It will never happen because of the expense. If everyone used the hand sanitizer that would also make a difference. According to my doc, the virus can live on your hands for a long time, but it is short-lived on latex gloves.

Morning, afternoon, evening, all...
Heather,
If that last post of yours wasn't a description of why I find your actions a pattern worthy of following, I don't know what is. Your joy in your own fitness and your care for your husband's health and fitness are admirable.
Machka,
It sounds like you're recovering well from the surgery - has your sense of smell returned completely? Or is it still intermittent?
Barbara AHMOD,
I had to let my husband deal with his dad's death, and shortly after, his youngest brother, who had Down Syndrome. Corey had grieved in his own way after we visited his dad and his brother in Alaska nearly two years prior--he knew that neither was likely to make it to our next visit. Men seem to process things quite differently in terms of grief--no less deeply, just more quietly. While I may not understand it, I tried to respect his process. Not easy, when I wanted to poke at him and see if he was OK.
_______________________________________
Dishwasher and clothes washer are whooshing, and I started wondering why this is my happy place. There is peace here for me that, as the saying goes, "passeth understanding."
And since I don't understand it, of course, I had to poke it, because that's what I do.
I realized that for the first time in many years (if ever), I am wholly present. Not thinking about work and what needs to be done. Not worrying about what might happen at work. Here. I've got some more thinking to do about that, but won't bore you with it here.
Finished Levi's afghan last night, will start work on Haley's next, then Tyler's. Three weeks for the first one (I think); we'll see how long the other two take!
Shopping morning - trying to keep it just to Fridays these days, go early, get in, get out, get back home--which pushes my exercising later, but am learning to adjust to that, as well. I'm getting to be such a hermit that it really annoys me to have to put on real clothes and go out and look at other people, even if it is over a mask!
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR4 -
Using vinegar in the rinse cycle works well too. It takes out the excess soap too as a bonus. Vinegar also kills fungus too.2 -
Machka,
It sounds like you're recovering well from the surgery - has your sense of smell returned completely? Or is it still intermittent?

Ummm ... my nose is coming along but is still annoying.
It was stitched up with dissolvable stitches and I presume the ones inside my body are dissolving, but in the process, pieces of thread stick out. I've already removed quite a bit and there is still more. I can see them and I can definitely feel them. It's like having hard pieces of snot painfully lodged in your nose. And the area around them is slightly swollen. Apparently it is a waiting game ... they should eventually go but it could be weeks.
Plus my sinuses drain like Niagara Falls at random times, but especially about 2 minutes after I step outside in the chilly weather. So I've got a running faucet during those walks, and I get a lot of dark looks when I'm within sight of people and whip out the tissues. I absolutely cannot go anywhere without tissues! After about an hour outside in the chilly conditions, my nose has had enough ... it hurts.
And I'm having some nerve issues which is a known complication. The tip of my nose is numb. My two front teeth feel really weird. And a spot on the roof of my mouth right directly behind my two front teeth feels like I burned it. Evidently these complications should resolve within a few months. Yes, months. This means I eat cool food all the time and drink cool coffee and tea. If I eat or drink anything hot, it makes that spot behind my teeth feel so much worse!
And as for the sense of smell, it still comes in occasional waves, overwhelming blasts, but mostly there isn't much change.
However, I can breathe better.
I will see my surgeon in mid-September to make sure things are on track. But otherwise, I just have to be patient.
And meanwhile, I rinse my sinuses, moisturise the interior of my nose, and use the steamer in the bedroom to try to make things more tolerable.

It's Friday!
Barbara - I always enjoy reading your "Get to Do's" and "Chose Wells". Inspiring and gives me a kick in the rear to get after some tasks around here that I've been putting off. Hope Tumble is over the crud. Been there.
Took Rosie the Bratwurst Schnauzer to the vet yesterday. Good news and bad news and interesting news. Good news - no spending $$ on dental cleaning right now, some plaque but can wait. Per the vet, front teeth falling out in little dogs happens, the canines and molars should be OK for quite a while. Bad news is that when the groomer brushed her teeth a week ago, she must have used more than a doggie toothbrush because there are now scrape marks. More ragged surfaces for plaque to take hold. I know the groomer was just trying to help and save me some $$ by avoiding vet dental cleaning. So will move on from it, lesson learned, and endeavor to keep up with Rosie's teeth better here.
Interesting news is that when we discussed Rosie's weight gain and went over what she was eating, I mentioned I had recently discovered the dog dental chews I'd been giving her twice a week (recommended daily, but they are spendy and I'm cheap) have nearly 50 calories per chew. Vet's eyes opened wide and said she'd been told they have no calories and went into the lobby and grabbed a bag from the shelf which gives NO information other than the special ingredient which keeps the dog's teeth clean. I told her my plan was to cut back on dog food on the days Rosie got her chew.
She said she was going to check on the calories and when I came home, I called the manufacturer and sure enough, the info on the Chewy website was correct. The vets there have been stocking and recommending them for several years. I would imagine there was a lot of conversation about it among the other vets and staff in the vet clinic yesterday afternoon.
Heather - your testing is also giving me a kick in the pants. When I went to do my SWSY workout a couple days ago, I looked at my calendar and realized I hadn't lifted a weight in 2 months. And I realize how much my DH is declining when I think about what he was able to do a year ago.
Had a long phone conversation with a good friend yesterday. Her DH is 64, planned to keep working until 66 to get full social security. He works in maintenance in a facility where there's been a virus breakout in the past week, so if plumbing breaks, he's been the go-to guy. He is now considering immediate retirement if he can't be assigned to jobs in other parts of the facility where he wouldn't be around infected folks. Which is kind of putting a crimp in their plans to have the car and truck paid off by the time he retires. It's bringing back memories of when I sped up my retirement plans and budget decisions that had to be made in our own household 4 years ago.
Lisa - so happy you decided to retire and I'm impressed at how quickly you were able to move forward.
Ladies, I confess. I haven't been logging and my eating has been horrible. Honesty pants getting painful. Likely worry over the dog's teeth and DH's concern about the firewood not being delivered. Both of those situations are now resolved. I now understand how/why my folks were overwhelmed by little things in their later years and need to hone my ability to flip situations.
Speaking of dogs, time to get their breakfast ready and let them out for their morning constitutional. Porch light on, flashlight in hand. Already.
Sending hugs and prayers for all of you whose families are affected by the smoke and fires.

Here we go again! This one is projected to be a mild tropical depression. No prep is going to be done here.....other than bagging up some ice.
