I was ordering us all some gluten-free (in honour of PV) pizza, actually!
Well done everyone!
@polska_girl enjoy your race, you can do it! Photos please (if it's permitted, of course)9 -
@eleanorhawkins thanks for the gf pizza!
My trail race series will be on in October. DH thinks I need to do it. I ordered some masks from Athleta for it. They have a clip to relieve pressure on the ears, a filter pocket, and were in a list for best running masks. I don't have to run in it but figured it'd be good for the after when I'm still breathing hard & go collect the swag. It was $35 for 3 (incl shipping & tax). I don't think masks will be going away anytime soon.9 -

Beautiful park @HonuNui ! Congrats on your progress in the challenge. Great RAOK. Hope she heals quickly.
@TheMrWobbly So nice of you on both counts! I'm sure the person with the ticket really appreciated that!
@polskagirl01 You'll do great! Looking forward to your race report!
Happy Anniversary @marisap2010 ! Beautiful picture!

Happy anniversary @marisap2010!
Great RAOK @TheMrWobbly and @HonuNui!
Good luck on your REAL HM race @polskagirl01. You got this! Enjoy it.
I couldn't find it on any weather app, but it felt like gravity was EXTRA EXTRA strong today! It probably had something to do with the 100% humidity and hauling those rocks yesterday. But it took me over 4 miles just to break 9:00 pace, and I felt like I was pushing it pretty hard. But ended the Pastor Vincent vs Boston challenge with all 3 legs under 9:00/ mi. Will be glad to get back to some easy pace running next week.

I was going strong in the virtual marathon but went out for a nice 6.5 miles this morning but didn't do anything. I was driving to the trail and saw the air and figured I'd try. I got half a mile in and my lungs and throat were burning. I turned around and came home. Taking doggo for a walk since it's not as taxing and she needs it.

I only finished 8 of my 11 miles this morning. It was misting rain majority of the time, which was fine, but then it started to rain pretty hard. Of course, now that I am inside and showered, the sun has decided to come out. Oh well. I can get in the last 3.1 I need between today and tomorrow.

Just a 5k this morning in the BM challenge. Sets it up nicely for a 10k down the seafront tomorrow and then @hanlonsk can bring it home8

Happy anniversary @marisap2010!
I'm really looking forward to your race report too, @polskagirl01. Hope it went well/is going well!
Sorry about the air quality not being good for a run @RunsOnEspresso. It's just unbelievable the extent of the fires and the impact.
Congrats on finishing the VM @Scott6255! That extra gravity definitely makes it tough. Well done persevering and getting under 9 min/mile pace.

I finished up the challenge this morning too. Headed out to meet up with whoever might show at the 7:30 group time and found a few friends, and then we looped back for a few more people at 8. And those people were too fast so I dropped back with another friend and we just talked and ran on our own. I told her I needed 8.4 miles to finish this VM and she was nice enough to hang with me to finish that up. It was a good therapeutic chat and run on a beautiful day.
After I finished up, I went home and did a quick shower and change and headed to the gym for group strength training. We did mostly core and some upper body stuff, but still got in a number of squats (as always) and lunges and my quads and glutes were really starting to protest.
Nap time now, then work and walking the dog at some point.8 -
@Scott6255 Congrats on finishing the Marthon vs Pastor Vincent today. I had to laugh at wondering if gravity was stronger today. Sometimes, it sure feels like it.
Probably a good call @RunsOnEspresso ! Those fires are bad. I heard on the news this morning that they said the air quality in CA was like smoking 20 packs of cigarettes....don't know if that was all at once, or in a day, or what, but I guess it was a way to say it was really, really bad.
My friend wanted to play tennis this morning, so we went. Didn't start until 10 and it was already hot. Neither of us played very well, but we hung in there until noon. I had hoped to come home and get a run in, but it's hot and I'm just not feeling well today. I hope after a nice rest I can run later. I really need to get in at least a couple of miles or I may be a DNF on the marathon. I don't want that to happen.

The young lady that was the recipent of my "act of kindness" yesterday posted the following on FB last night. Even though you may never hear these words from the people you have all helped out, I'm sure the sentiment is the same.
God knows all our struggles and he hears all prayers. I will admit I have been struggling with alot the past few weeks. I am exhausted, stressed, and worried. I felt unnoticed, unappreciated, and it was like nothing I did was going my way. There were days I didn't even want to get out of bed. I try so hard to not let my emotional get the best of me. I felt like my prayers weren't being heard. I was just about at my breaking point. Today showed me just how powerful prayer is. I was blessed not once but twice today! God knew I needed a blessing and he is always working through people to carry out his extraordinary plan! To the ones who felt it in their heart to bless Anna and I today, they know who they are, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Even when I didn't feel worthy enough, God sends you to show me just how worthy I am! God Bless You!

@HonuNui - love that word "craptastic", going to have to remember it! I am sure your basket and especially the wine was a big hit with your friend! It is hard enough breaking one bone but breaking both - "ouch"!
That park is so beautiful!

@RunsOnEspresso - same here... I was all dressed and ready to go out until I checked the air quality and it was worse than I thought. I struggled yesterday and today is even smokier with more particulate. It is amazing what an impact all the fires are having just in smoke, not even considering all the destruction. They are telling us to stay inside with the air conditioning on. Well we are staying inside but the air conditioner is still broken.
@polskagirl01 - we are all living vicariously through you, @skippygirlsmom and the few others who are getting to run IRL races. So we need all the details!
@quilteryoyo - that is so nice to see the appreciation and that you helped turn her week around.

That picture is amazing though.
I know, you'd probably rather not have had the opportunity to get this shot because of all the destruction the fires are causing, but... wow. Do you have a picture of this same view during a "healthy" season?1 -
I ran 11 tough miles today. When I finished, it was 79 with 82 percent humidity. There wasn't a dry spot on me! Also had chill bumps during the run a couple of times. Why? I always run fasted, but today I had a GU pack at mile 5 and sipped a 20oz Gatorade Zero through my run. Got back home and decided to eat after my bath. BIG mistake. I stood up from the tub and almost blacked out. Had to crawl out and make my way to the kitchen for a quick snack. I've felt off all day! Tomorrow I walk my miles and try to recuperate.
@marisap2010 Happy anniversary!

[REAL!] RACE REPORT!
In case the exclamation points don't give it away, I'm pretty excited that I got to do a real half marathon race tonight, with other people!
WARNING: long post written while on a runner's post-race high. The main differences were the precautions. It wasn't stressful though, just different. Limited to 250 runners total between HM and 7k races. Large start/finish area blocked off for runners and volunteers only, who had a stamp on our arm signifying that we had passed a temperature check and signed a declaration that we don't have COVID or symptoms, aren't subject to quarantine and haven't had contact with any confirmed cases or people who themselves are in quarantine, and we had to disinfect hands and wear masks in that area. Shortly after the start we could throw down our masks (mine was around my neck so I kept it), and they gave us a new one in the finish area. Water stations were bottles lined up on tables, with volunteers standing back at a distance, so I took that little thingy I have that goes on the bottle and then you can attach it to your hand, and I carried the bottle. It worked well. Also it was was easier to drink from than a cup and as a result, I was able to run every step of the race.
It was also different because it was organized by the Franciscans, whose representative monk (or maybe priest, sorry! I'm not good at identifying the different outfits) opened us in the Lord's Prayer and then proceeded to stand just past the start line sprinkling holy water on everyone as we went past. It was odd to me, but OK. They organized the race as a fundraiser for a little girl with an incurable neurological disease, to help pay for her therapy. Maybe that counts as a RAOC too.
On to the race. 3 loops of 7 km each. I took the first lap easy to see how it was (mostly flat, only gradual elevation changes) and hung out for part of the time with some people I don't know but have seen before at races. One girl who normally runs was on a bike cheering them on, and said she was cheering me on, too. She looks exactly like my little sister. But they were all running the 7k, so after the first loop they left me, and then the ambulance came up right behind me. You know what this means - I was last 😲. Looking ahead, I could see some people in the distance, but I wasn't consistently gaining on them, and with the flashing ambulance lights (no siren thank goodness) it kind of felt like a run of shame like "here's the caboose!" but I tried to get over it. I really wasn't THAT slow, but small race and bla bla bla excuses... at some point the ambulance went up to the next runner, and I got this awesome antique car as my escort behind me. For the rest of lap 2. I was coming to terms with being DFL (only the F means Fabulously in my world). I also cheered on the top 10 or so men as they lapped me, and was glad that the top females did not lap me.
Lap 3: It was dark, but there were street lights almost everywhere. I could see that there were 2 runners ahead that I could catch, and got to the first guy early in the lap. I ran with him for a little while, until he suddenly swore, gave up and started walking I wasn't trying to wear him out, I really just was enjoying running with someone. So I felt bad, briefly. When I caught the other guy I stayed with him for a while too, mainly to get a break but also because he sped up and I wasn't ready to go faster. But the ambulance moved up to to us and the lights behind me were starting to bother me (I was worried about it triggering a migraine), so when I did take off, I worked hard to put some distance between us because I did not want them, or the runner they were with, to catch back up to me. I knew I was almost done, but the last 2 kilometers took forever and I kept expecting to see that final turn onto the main road and it kept not being there.
Finally the finish was just around the corner and I had it all to myself, with no ambulances or cool cars in sight. I kind of feel like Pastor Vincent's sense of humor was with me though, as the guy in the finish area with the microphone saw my non-Polish name and wanted to interview me. And then he realized I was an American, but speak Polish. So he announced this to everyone within hearing distance. And told them to clap for me. I really just wanted to get my medal and finishers packet and get out of there. Anyone remember that gif/meme PV posted a while back with one of the Simpsons characters disappearing into some bushes? Yes? I wanted to disappear just like that.
The most awesome part were the friendly volunteers and all of the people along the route cheering for us. So many spectators stuck around for all 3 loops, and it was so encouraging. There were no high 5's this time and the police stepped back if we were running too close in their direction, but it was just so nice to be back doing something I love.
Also it was good training for next week's race, provided nothing crazy happens here!

VM for @PastorVincent – Done!
It was so hot and humid this morning. Temp was 71F when we started our run at 6:00 am. I don’t know what the humidity was but it had to be close to 100%. I had 20 miles on my training schedule. They were slow but they are done. I paused my Garmin when I stopped to cross a street and forgot to restart it for at least 0.3 of a mile. So, my Garmin read 19.41 when I got back to the car and I figured that was close enough. It definitely put me over the finish line for the virtual marathon for @PastorVincent.
I love reading about everyone’s RAOK as a tribute to our friend @PastorVincent. For my RAOK, I donated cat food to the local animal shelter. I dropped it off after I finished my run. A volunteer that I know messaged me later and thanked me and said it was very timely since they had just run out of canned food. Looking forward to your race report @polskagirl01! Edited - Congratulations girl! Great race report!
Happy Anniversary @marisap2010! What a beautiful bride and look at all those medals on your man! Impressive!
Great race pace @Scott6255!! So impressive!
@RunsOnEspresso – I saw the pictures on the news one evening this week of the terrible air quality and horrific stories from the fires. Take care!
@quilteryoyo and @WandaVaughn – Hope you both get to feeling better. This heat and humidity can really zap you.
@quilteryoyo - I love that your RAOK helped out your struggling co-worker and her daughter. Bless you!
@WandaVaughn – I’ve tried the Hokas on 2 separate occasions and both time ended up with niggles and pains. Many love them but they just aren’t the shoe for me.

Great job, @polskagirl01 !!!!2

@martaindale Yeah for the better weather! I agree with the posting thing too. I do that all the time....also a "leaving the page" warning. Sometimes when I click on a link it opens in a different window and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't and I'm in the middle of a post, I lose it. So frustrating.
@polskagirl01 Love the race report. I especially love how much you enjoyed the race, regardless of where you were in the pack! You rock!!! And, I do remember that meme.
Congratulations on finishing the VM @Teresa502 and doing 20 miles in those conditions! Love your RAOK too. I started to donate to our local animal shelter, but change my mind. May still at a later date.3 -
Way to go @polskagirl01 on your IRL HM! So cool that you were able to do that. Great race report 👍3

@polskagirl01 I tried to find another photo. This is pretty much the same spot from January except I'm facing to the left of the photo from today.
Oh, quick side by side here. I was a little lower on the trail in January but this is looking the same direction. So the big hill is to the right of the little hills.6 -
So, today I tried to set myself up for a bit of an adventure before real winter comes. So, I went to the kind of near by town (30 miles away) that actually has things like stores, sidewalks, people, etc. they have a creek running thru town and have a pretty decent “greenway” type path system all over the place that I have used for long runs before when I was actually in shape enough to have “long runs.”
The plan involved farmers market, running, and fishing.
So, I started by stopping by the farmers market, which is at a park, along afore mentioned path. And this was happening.
So, I thought very fondly of everybody when I saw this.
And then I rounded the corner, and saw this, and found this incredibly funny- because I couldn’t have read these signs if I weren’t on foot, but they were not joking.... I had needed to find an alternate route to the market because my usual turn was a big frigging hole in the ground.
Then came the running.... I learned that in addition to the sidewalk system that I knew they had, and still need to explore more of.... they have several “units” of trail along the creek, also.... like they mow the grass so you are less likely to get surprised by a critter, and everything. It’s kind of impressive how well they set it up to make you feel like you are in the wilderness, even when there are houses, businesses, streets, and people all around you. I think you can even see the interstate in one of these pictures. But, it was lovely, and if I was in better shape I would have enjoyed more of it. But, I got 2.5 miles in this morning. So, providing I even do a quarter mile, I will have at least met the mileage I told my team mate I was likely good for.
And then I went fishing... was not successful... but it kept me out of trouble. And, I have since learned it was international women’s fly fishing day or something, so apparently I was doing what I was supposed to be.
2.5 today = 5.8/why am I starting over again?11 -
