Today, Sept 13, is the last day to join and have your miles count towards the 26 mile Virtual Boston Marathon Week for @PastorVincent! It’s still not too late - you don’t have to run 26 miles in 2 days if you join now - any miles run since the 7th in Strava will automatically count towards the challenge. Or you can jump in with only a couple of miles and help someone who’s struggling by joining a team.
The last day of the challenge is tomorrow, Sept 14, Chicago time. The deadline on acts of kindness is more flexible, try to get them in soon so they can go in an ebook for @PastorVincent’s wife Kristi. Also, if you can, take photos of yourself, your run, or anything else which would look great in the book and help show what a diverse and varied group of people came together from all over the world to show their love for @PastorVincent. Next week we will start organizing stuff for the ebook and getting it together.
Yesterday a whole bunch of people ran in to the finish line! We’re all kicked back now at Fenway stadium with our virtual space blankets, complementary 26.2 Samuel Adams beer, and @eleanorhawkins delicious gluten free pizza for everybody, cheering for those still out there!
Pleased to report that every team in the challenge has gone at least halfway! And some have done it despite injuries, personal setbacks, and harsh environmental setbacks. @RunsOnEspresso has so much smoke it looks like a cloudy day and @shanaber looks like she’s living on Mars! Everyone be safe out there.6 -
Yay I’m over the finish line and looking for that GF pizza and beer. A hot and sunny 10k this morning to finish the marathon for Pastor Vincent. We have a mini heatwave approaching in London. Despite the heat, I thought I would kick it up a notch on the pace in honour of the virtual race and pleased to report I averaged sub 11 minute miles for the run, with no stopping, breaks, water etc. And halfway to my month mileage goal too. So a quite successful Sunday!
Well done @polskagirl01! Great race report! Happy anniversary @marisap2010 and hope the fires and smoke clear soon @RunsOnEspresso. High fives to everyone for the running and, particularly, the acts of kindness. @quilteryoyo - yours made me want to cry. Such a special thing to do, and a wonderful tribute to Pastor Vincent.

Cloudy, low 70s F, humid and a little drizzle today. Had hoped to finish stronger, but there wasn't much left in the tank today. Left it all out on the course, which was what I was aiming to do. Made my stretch time goal and finished my VM with @PastorVincent . Pizza and beer sounds pretty good, even on a Sunday morning.

I had a lazy start to the morning. I made plans to run at 8 with a friend but she texted me late the night before that it "wasn't happening" so I turned off my alarm. It's a cloudy cool day with rain in the forecast so very conducive to sleeping and lazing around under blankets with coffee. I finally headed out a little before 10 to get it done before the rain comes, which was successful. I misremembered my total and cut myself just short of my goal of 30 miles for the week, ending at 29.79. But no matter, at least I got the VM done for PastorVincent and I'm halfway to my monthly goal.
Congrats to everyone who has finished so far. Hand me a slice of that pizza and a beer and I'll ring my cowbell for the rest of you to bring it home!
Oh, edited to add that last night I finally transferred all my Spartan races from 2020 to 2021, plus I had a free race code, so I'm now signed up for 5 Spartans from April to September of next year. I want to sign up for at least one more for a double trifecta but I'm waiting to see if anything gets added to the schedule that's closer to me. Here's hoping that races happen next year and that I can survive all of those after over a full year off.10 -
Yesterday was not only my final run in the Virtual Boston Marathon Week challenge for @PastorVincent but also my husband’s and my Runniversary, the anniversary of the very first 5k we ran in 2017, the West Cancer Clinic Fight On. Since my husband was treated for skin cancer at the West Cancer Clinic it is doubly significant to us! Unfortunately they decided not to do a 5k this year. Although they did some other virtual challenges, none were anything we were interested in. So we ran our own private 5k race yesterday. I painted my fingernails in West Cancer Clinic colors, and put a temporary transfer tattoo I had left over from last year’s race on my shoulder, and he wore his West Warrior singlet, and we headed our to the railroad access road.
I had hoped to bring it in under 30 minutes, and our first two miles went well, but it ended up being just too hot and humid to sustain that pace. It wasn’t that hot per se, and it was mostly overcast, but the dewpoint was 76 and for some reason the air was still and just felt oppressive. I feel bad complaining about air quality when our people out west have it so much worse, but it just felt yucky to breathe and after 2 miles we were overheating. Took a walk break, sprinted in, and ended up with 31:32 for the 5k. Strava says it was my best 2 mile effort, so we went out great, just needed a little cooler weather to keep it up.
That also meant I finished my Virtual Boston Marathon in under 6 hours! Yay I stayed ahead of the sweep wagon, despite walking half my miles!
We did a little fartleking after that and took turns taking pictures of each other running. And then went home and really did have pizza for our after-race party! We also got home just in time to watch the West Cancer Fight On Facebook closing ceremony while we ate our pizza.
So many people at the park playing soccer that we had to park behind the firehouse to start.
This segment on Strava is nicknamed “Racing Trains.” I wonder why! It gets really loud when a train goes by but it’s thrilling!

I may end up DNF'ing Boston. We went for a short hike this morning and I'll go out tomorrow to hopefully get the last 4+ miles in. 🤞🏻

Did a spine ride yesterday and today is rest day which will include usual chores. Hamstring feeling better each day. Been doing a lot of stretching. I will try a slow run tomorrow and see.

I slept later than I meant to this morning. It seemed like a good idea when I was laying in bed. Not so much when I didn't get out to run until 8:30. LOL
The temperature was 73°F and 78% humidity. Doesn't sound too bad, but it was a miserable run. My plan called for an 11 mile run today, but decided I just wanted to finish my HM for @PastorVincent today - so 8 miles.
I did driveway laps since I got a late start and it would be sunny and even more miserable on the road. It was a horrible run from the beginning. I think the stronger gravity that @Scott6255 had the other day moved to E. TN. The first two miles were the worst. It got a little better when I ran further down the driveway and, therefore, walked more to get back up the hill. Still, I just felt awful. After 5 miles I decided to finish up on the treadmill - it would be cooler, more controllable, and I could watch virtual church at the same time. Even that was horrible. But, I got it done and completed the marathon distance in a total time of 5:29:59. My goal was to finish under the 6 hour cutoff. Thanks to my great run on Monday, I accomplished that.
When I was looking at my stats on Garmin Connect after the run, I saw that my warm up walk was odd. For around 3 minutes in the middle of the walk, my HR was over 200 BPM. If that was correct, that's probably why I just wasn't feeling it today. But, my average HR during the running portion was 155, so not bad. It was just one of those days.
Also 8/20 walking.9 -
Ended up just walking today because of the smoke and ash. Didn't want to breathe too hard. Even walking made me cough and my eyes water and I smelled like smoke when I got home. Hobbes enjoyed getting to sniff everything though. I am not hopeful that it is going to get any better any time soon unless the fires get under control and the winds shift.
When I was in Strava today it popped up with a friend I should have. @KeepRunningFatboy (Dennis) has been gone now for a bit over 2 years. Another young, inspiring, runner lost too soon and sorely missed. Thinking of him and rereading the comments from his brother just made me so sad.

I most certainly did not avoid the 6 hour sweepers, but I did accomplish my goal, which was to do all 26.2 miles, quite a heady feeling since I have been....less than regular....for the last couple years.
Though I like pizza and beer as well as the next guy, I instead chose to celebrate with a hot dog. With ketchup-not mustard- in honor of @PastorVincent.
@rheddmobile suggested we include pictures of ourselves or where we run. As others have mentioned, we have lost too many of our number: @keeprunningfatboy, @mobycarp, and now @pastorvincent, and I can tell you from personal experience how much this community meant to me when my own son died, and you rallied around me. When we ran a live/virtual 5k in memory of him (my son), ya'll sent pictures with your AimAtMelanoma medals and shirts. Of those pictures, I created a montage, so I include that, and as you can see, @pastorvincent is prominently present there, representative of the wonderful, supportive community this is.

Argh, the Boston dates are clashing somewhat with my taper. No run yesterday and no run today. I have an hour scheduled for tomorrow (15th here, which I’ll do at 8:30am) and which may still fall into the 14th Chicago time. However, as I only have 3km to go, I think I’ll just go for a walk this afternoon to ensure I don’t miss the cutoff.9

My random act of kindness in honour of @PastorVincent was to offer to look after a friends children while she and her husband packed their house to move. When she texted later in the afternoon saying, ‘I’m knee deep in packing, what time shall I collect them?’, I said, keep going, I’ll feed them dinner, come after then.
This may not seem much to you but my max for extra children (and noise) is about two hours!10 -

@WandaVaughn you might want to do some reading on the chills while running in the heat, it’s not a good thing, and it’s a sign of heat exhaustion. They recommend you stop running immediately. Hydration comes into play, make sure if you are running over 5 miles you are drinking 12-15 oz of water every 20 mins, have something with electrolytes.
@polskagirl01 as a Catholic I gotta say the Holy Water was a weird touch. Ha ha you were an international star, interview and all. Great race, sounded interesting to say the least.

My dad has been moved back to the hospital ICU. He was doing well and planning to be released on Wednesday and then he started having trouble keeping his oxygen levels up. They have ruled out Covid, pneumonia, and cancer and believe that it is a reaction to some medication he was taking for a fib. So it has been a pretty stressful few days. I have read all the post and liked and given hugs but I've gotten behind and I'm sure I missed stuff. Lots of great pictures. Happy Anniversary @marisap2010 and great job on your real life race @polskagirl01.
Great job to all who are finished with the Boston Challenge. I finished this morning with a 10 mile run. It was really good and just what I needed. It was not too hot at ~68°F. But it was 99% humidity. It was still more pleasant than it has been. I was at my sister's yesterday and got home late so I got a later start than I wanted. I managed to keep my pace at 10:46 mi/min. I always feel pretty good if I am under 11 minutes. I think I completed my virtual Boston Marathon in 5 hours. I actually went 28.78 miles this week. I thought about stopping at 26.2, but I didn't want to cut my long run short and I figured that since @PastorVincent usually finished his race and then went back to run in with Kristi it would be appropriate to run farther than the 26.2.
I also did my RAOK today. It wasn't a lot, but I made a little care package for a lady I know. She is one if my youngest sister's friends. She is really sweet and always does nice things for others. I left anonymously it on her doorstep. I had called my sister to get her apartment number and she told me that her friend was feeling sad today because it was the birthday of her nephew who passed away not long ago. So I was glad I picked today to do it. She was pretty excited and posted about it on Facebook and that made me feel really good.
I also got my 1000 mile bib for the Run the Year challenge. I pledged 1000 miles for my team so I hit my goal. I did have a stretch goal to run the year in kilometers so I'm still working on that.
When do you need pictures @rheddmobile? I'm on my phone now, so I will need to get them to you tomorrow if that's ok.

I spent most of yesterday and today at my parents’ house helping my dad get settled after his hospital discharge. I’ve come to realize that my dad is, and probably will continue to be, at a point where he will have to be cared for by others for the most part. I had to help him with some things that made me pretty sad.
Anyway, I got home late to storms moving in, so I ran around the downstairs of my house listening to a David Tennant podcast to finish my last 2.3 miles. Marathon for @PastorVincent complete!
The talk of finish line pizza sounded so good, so I made a homemade pizza tonight!11 -
@kgirlhart sorry to hear dad is back in ICU - I'll keep him in my prayers.
@marisap2020 I'm sorry about your Dad, glad he's home, but I understand how hard it can be to care for an ill parent. I didn't live with my parents when my dad was sick, but for some reason he only wanted me to care for him. Like you said I had to help him with things that made me sad, hugs.3 -

I missed my morning run window, so I went out tonight after it started cooling off. So,mostly through the effort s of @TheMrWobbly , Team Make Tomorrow Better is officially across the finish line.
I blamed my breathing issues last Monday on the sudden cold. But, I think there is more to it than that, since lungs kinda ended both of my last runs, also. Part of it is probably air quality, even if it “looks” better, it probably isn’t very good. Part of it is definitely still how incredibly out of shape I am. Part of it is, I think I need to pay more attention to my breathing early on in the run for a while, because when I focused on steady and full breaths stuff got a bit better today, but I was already around the wrong corner on the subject, so it wasn’t enough. But, especially since cold will start being a fourth factor, I think I may need to return pre-dosing with my inhaler even at run lengths/intensities I haven’t usually needed to do that for.
So, all that to say, my last run interval wasn’t as runny as it was supposed to be. But otherwise, it was a pretty uneventful run.
2.25 today = 8/ why am I starting over again?9 -
My half marathon on Sunday - the one I've been training so hard for since February and that was postponed from April and was to be my first 1:45 or faster (!) half - has been Covid'd. We were hoping for an announcement today to go from level 2 lockdown to level 1 which would mean the full event could be held. Sadly, we're staying at level 2 a little longer.
The race is still on. Kinda. It's being held as a 'training run' where up to 75 people can book a 15 minute start time, run the event (wear the event bib as the timing mats will be out) and then go home.
I've signed up for a 6:45 start to ensure easy parking and as little breeze as possible, and while there will be plenty of people out running, there will be no marshalls or road closures or support crew, except bewildered locals out with their dogs wondering what the hell is going on and getting in the way (another reason to choose an early start).

I was up and dressed early for work and now am done and have some free time but can't decide whether I want to bike or run fast. Stalling like this could mean I do neither. Hmm. But then I also have to get one kid to school and pick the other one up. Maybe I should make lunch.5 -

@kgirlhart Re: photos, etc. I will be messaging challenge participants at some point later today with my email so we can send pictures to each other without worrying about MFP’s message system. There’s no time limit on random acts of kindness, but if you can be thinking about what you would want to share with Kristi, in terms of photos from your challenge, stories, etc., we’ll be getting the stuff together for our challenge ebook throughout the week.2
