WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR SEPTEMBER 2020

The wind blew in a very heavy smoke cover. I cut my walk short as after a mile my nose was burning. I had too shut down the windows and use AC on my return home. There must be a big fire somewhere in central Oregon. Not good with this wind. It darkened the sky enough that the sun looks brown.
UPDATE Edit: Just found out that the fire is on The Warm Springs Reservation. The winds this morning have really fanned it. Also danger warning out because of predicted wind gust this afternoon up to 50 mph. The alert says to keep informed because, with wind speeds, evacuation time will be short. The alert covers everything from mid-Oregon to the coast. I should be safe except for air quality, but one never knows so I am on my toes.2 -
Kate - Ouch! Hope you feel better soon!
Rori - Glad you're getting help. It sounds like Mary is a good fit.
Debbie and Kim - Hang in there with the fires. It looks like they are getting more under control.
A fire broke out in my neck of the woods on Friday (about 20 miles away). It went from 1500 acres to over 10,000 just over the weekend. The winds here are quite strong at the moment, so that is not helping, nor is the heat. We have some ash starting to collect on our deck. The air is not bad today, but was pretty bad yesterday. Made for pretty skies and sunset, but it sure isn't healthy.
I love all vacations, except lounging on the beach. The idea is to just get away where I'm not thinking of all the chores and activities I need to do at home.
Have a great day!

Didn’t sleep well last night. Headache now. Just saying hi ladies!!

I just got my job back full time after being laid off in March (Covid layoffs). These past few months at home have taught me to take better care of myself. I have not only started working out, but actually ENJOYING it for the first time in my life. I think because I haven't been tired--working from home for the last two months has given me 3 extra hours a day (no commute) and I realize now how draining that was. Now I will be going back into the office two days a week, but NO MORE. I have made the decision to put myself first. I'm not giving up this new, much more balanced life for a paycheck. Nope. I'll go in, but it will only be from 8:30 to 2 pm, so that I have time to do my 4 mile walk daily, even when the days shorter and it gets darker sooner. Fortunately I am very valuable to my employers, they need me more than I need them right now, so they have agreed to all my conditions. Feeling very empowered about that.
As Autumn begins to creep up, and my vegetable garden starts to die down, I want to spend time researching and planning next year's layout and crops. I love to look at seed catalogues and dream of growing wonderful new things.
I've also started writing a children's book, something I have longed to do my whole life. I'm very excited about it's potential. Working with a talented young artist who will provide the illustrations.
My husband and I are also looking to buy a farm in Virginia, so it's been fun looking on line and narrowing down our choices. We've renovated 6 houses in the 34 years we've been married, I'd like to think this will be the final and best of our collaboration. He is a retired contractor and I'm a designer, so it's a great partnership. Something old, with good bones but that needs love, is what I dream about.11 -

New toy. Kirby bought a bike repair stand so he doesn’t have to hunch over to work on our bikes4 -
HI Rori! So glad things seem to be coming together.
Been watching Easy German videos this afternoon. I've been to Leipzig, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Freiburg.
Plus I managed to download a Marie Claire Maison magazine. I had to search around a bit, but got there on Kindle.
DH has been talking to his cricket friend about their meet up. It was going to be at a pub on Thursday, but there has been a rethink. Now they are going to meet at the cricket ground next Monday. His friend has booked a posh room with a balcony overlooking the cricket match, which is not open to the public! So DH is going to drive there, wear a mask through the hotel and make it out onto the big balcony. They will eat a packed lunch.
I think that will be OK. It's a bit ofa drive for him, but he probably needs to do it.
Haven't heard back from his daughters yet.
Tracey - the elder daughter is on the autistic spectrum, which was only diagnosed in her late 40s. She isn't always able to see things the way we would. He finds it difficult to thwart either of them because he still feels guilty for walking out on the marriage when they were small. They do love him very much, but he is always on his best behaviour.
Sorry about the fires and heat.

Joann Awesome that you and your hubs can still renovate and do gardening. Enjoyed your post and glad you can still work at your terms. We have some authors, writers, and artists on this ongoing thread. Your Children's book sounds like fun.

Wonder what Penny from the North Pole is up to these days?
Faye – I hate when you go to a store and you think someone is talking to you and you find out that they’re talking on their cell phone.
Katla – do you ever think this pandemic will wane??? I don’t know. This is a virus, just like the flu it mutates into different strains. So I don’t know what will happen. Personally, I’d like to get rid of this mask. It’s hard for me, but I can manage the distancing, but having to have a mask with you all the time, to me, is a royal pain.
Rori – so grateful for Mary. I’m sure with her help, you will be able to do less and less weight bearing tasks. I’m sad that in a few months we’ll have to close our pool, too. I had been going to the Y to use their pool, but I honestly don’t think I’ll return there soon. I always made sure I stepped on my towel only when changing out of my bathing suit. You can bet that I’ll swim a few laps for you (and then some)
Joanne – woo hoo WANTING to exercise. Good feeling, huh?
Went to Jess’ storage place. We were afraid it would be much worse, but it wasn’t. See, a while ago Vince put things away and he had some boxes piled up. Well, Jess went to the storage unit when she came home but didn’t take the step stool with her. We were afraid that she took things down and didn’t pile it back up. But there wasn’t much that needed to be done.
Now I think we’ll bring the Christmas things in the house that need to come in. Yes, I know it’s only September. But last year Vince couldn’t get all the indoor decorating that he wanted to do, so he’ll probably get started earlier this year. Well, I do have the popcorn strung......

Greetings from the Caregiver Cave. J'ai perdu le nord, le sud and all points in between!
Home Health Aide, Mary S. started last week. She is a Occupational Therapist by training, with over 30 years experience working with all age groups. Covid caused her to lose last job, and she now wants to work exclusively with seniors and veterans. I think she is a good fit for our household and especially DH as long as she gives him time and space to get used to her. She wears a mask the entire two hours every afternoon she is here, and has a lively, fun laugh. She brought over some kale grown in her massive garden, and DH helped her make kale chips while I laid down to rest a painful knee and foot. Today I think they are doing a simple craft. I will remain close and gradually ease out of the house for longer periods while she is here. He does like her and usually gives her a hug.
DB got Medicaid approval and card! This means he can now schedule appointment with highly recommended hepatologist and begin to more fully address his health issues. 🙏
The foot I fractured last year is hurting alot, so I have put the boot back on and stopped all non-essential, weight bearing exercise. It's misery trying to keep to MFP limit of 1250 calories. The scale is not my friend at the moment, but I just have to suck it up.
Heather: I just went through getting new floors installed in two rooms. It was well worth the upheaval, and I know that you will be super delighted with the results of your home improvements.
Michele: I think you are making a good decision to eliminate visits to less than optimal gyms. I know your basement workout room is fabulous and you always manage to get in great workouts. Please do some laps in your pool for me. I haven't been to ours in months, and it will be closed down pretty soon. Wah 😢
Kate UK: Oweeee! Hope that wrist heals up quickly.
Pip: How close are you to the big fires?
Loving all the pix of travels, homes, gardens and grands! You are a wonderful circle of friends, and I treasure you.
Stay well. We can do this.

Hi Gals,
Ginny - I had to hop in due to your comment about Letter Jackets, I embroider a lot of kids letter jackets but each fall I do a few “upsize” Where the now adult either has kids of their own or is going to a reunion, and the letter jacket doesn’t fit, so I recreate the letter jacket of their youth. The embroidery is copied and the patches are moved over. One gentleman, who was fit, just not as fit as in high school, won a contest at the reunion for having “kept” his fitness level is same as high school. No one but him knew he had had it re-created; not even his wife! So - it’s not only the hairdresser that knows for sure!
Kate in UK ((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))) take care.
Machka - a favorite vacation idea - Is one with weather never above 80, happier in the 60-75 range, quiet time sitting around a campfire with coffee in the morning, and wine at night – preferably 2-4 people, and with some interesting things to do in the day, a town to visit? Museums? Kayaking or other boating, historical sites…
Pip and Tina – stay safe, seems the fires are getting more under control in the north and less under control in the South of California. Although the heat has blanketed the state. I am in awe of some of you who are ok at 90+ I get a headache and stop being “OK” some where around 85 degrees… yesterday it was 106 in my backyard.

The smoke is so thick with added blowing dust, that it is half dark. Sure glad I put in a new super-duper allergy air filter in the AC. Still, my nose and eyes are burning. I went out to get the mail and didn't realize it was a holiday until the old guy walking by says, "holiday." A man of a few words he is but gets his point across. Reading my instructions for my modeling date this Thursday. Lots of preparation, but a girl must have everything just right for a photographic gig like this. Two days of prep. Photos will be taken at every angle. I must be ready for this momentous occasion. I will be pushed down the runway. It is amazing that so many photos can be taken with just one pose. I lost 1/4th of my colon last year due to cancer and the doctor didn't even smile when I asked for a 25% discount for the coming exploration. A spelunker without a sense of humor but he saved my life so I must overlook such petty things. I stocked up on TP. Better to have a clean foresight than dirty hindsight.

Someone asked me how far the fire was from us. The fire is in Aubrey ca and I looked in Mapquest and it’s 27 miles away4

Hi, Ladies!
I’m new to this group. Was looking for some kindred souls that I could connect with and share in our collective journeys. So amped and grateful to have come across the true Angel that is Barbie and the wonderful community/family she’s built here.
Still quarantining because of being in a high risk group and sadly struggling to lose the same pounds again that found me during the sedentary apt lifestyle in a big city, with two severely arthritic knees.
Reading a lot of your posts already has me feeling inspired to figure it out and get back on a plan.
To the ladies in Cali, surviving the fires, my hearts and prayers are with you.
Looking forward to getting to know each of you.
Much love and respect,
Maria Harlem, NYC9 -
Oh Pip that is scary, the wind up here had the fire moving at 10 miles an hour at one point.3

That's close. We have one about 30 miles north but the wind is blowing from the south so no problem for us, but the one about 80 miles to the south is pushing in all the smoke. They still have a Red Flag warning out for us on it.

Thanks for feedback on kids' stuff. Actually yesterday youngest son and I were in basement (he wanted a pic of him with bleach blond hair to show girlfriend). I had put together scrapbooks for his graduation reception (also did a dvd for it). I have all of those in one plastic storage box. Those things weren't as popular when his older brother graduate three years earlier. Jake also looked in the box of all his wrestling medals (he started younger than his brother and wrested in summer also). He asked me to keep the stuff until he gets a house (which I will). He brought up the letter jackets and said "One of those things you don't know what you will use it for but you don't want to get rid of it). I will keep the scrapbooks together. And put his letter jacket in a box to protect it. His brother had sorted out some of his stuff some time ago. It has been sitting in basement for quite some time. It is getting packed in a box and shipped to him next Saturday. I may just put his jacket in a box and ship it too.
Kim-I like the idea of resizing the letter jackets. I actually think my oldest son's will still fit him-not so sure about the younger. May pass that idea on to them.
Trying to decide if I want to just pay to get old pictures scanned or do it myself. Since it seems like distancing for me will be around for awhile longer, I may just move printer out to living room this fall/winter and do a stack at a time.
Had good visit with son and gf yesterday. We sat outside while Jake grilled, ate inside and Jake helped me with a couple of things in basement. They are good about masking and hand washing. Not thinking about what I ate. While I did log, it was a bit loose and not 100% accurate. However, since I have been maintaining weight nicely, one or two days won't kill me.
Hope everyone dealing with the fires make it through safely. To say 2020 is an interesting year is an understatement.
Off to get a couple of things straightened up-back to work tomorrow. Haven't looked at work computer since Friday at lunch time-I have enjoyed the break!
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio4 -
Today is National Neither Snow Nor Rain Day!
"'Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.' (Inscription found over the entrance of the central post office in New York City) National Neither Snow Nor Rain Day on September 7th commemorates the opening of the New York Post Office on September 7, 1914." At a time when our national postal service is under fire, it seems fitting to honor its dedication and accomplishments. A lot of people depend on the Post Office so I hope it survives.
Barbara - Happy to hear that Joe's procedure is behind him. I do remember when my dad had eye surgery how hard it was to keep up with the different dosage schedules for all the various drops!
Rita - I understand where your husband is coming from. Many of our close friends are ten years younger than we are, and sometimes it's hard to remember that our priorities have to be different because of our age.
Karen - The photo of the Indian Blankets is just beautiful! Love the way the colors pop.
Kate - I'm so sorry to hear about your fall! Hope you have a quick recovery and return to active life.
Machka - I have a dear friend in Chicago who is originally from Tasmania and hoping to move back there in October. He said he'll have a two-week quarantine once he gets there. His cats will be out of quarantine before he will! Seems smart since they have no cases of COVID. I'm excited for him, though... he lost his American wife a few months ago and it's time for him to be home.
Last night we had an outdoor, socially distanced get-together with a small group of friends. I'm an extreme introvert, but even I am getting tired of not seeing other people! It was pretty wonderful to sit outside in the back yard around a fire, enjoy a couple of beers, and have in-person conversations. Can't wait to try a socially distanced beach campout once the weather cools off.
Boris, a.k.a. our voracious roommate the sourdough starter, needs to be fed again today so I'd better go feed him and start the pizza dough. I love pizza night... it's a great way to get rid of bits and bobs I have left over in the refrigerator!
Hope everyone is safe and sound.

Snowflalke: My daughter and son in law also bought a country place. I think it is lovely. Unfortunately they live in Illinois and we live in Oregon. Our son and DDIL live even farther away. They are all doing well.
Rori: It sounds like Home Health Aide, Mary S, is a gift from heaven. I am delighted you have some respite. Good news for your DB, too. I am sorry about your fractured foot. Can you swim off some calories without aggravating your foot? (((HUGS)))
Faye: Thanks for the heads up for the Warms Springs Indian Reservation fires. I hope there is no loss of life.
Joahheaggesen1: Welcome to a great group! :flowerforyou:
Pip: The bike repair stand looks like a useful tool, as well as a neat man-toy.
Heather: I am delighted that your DH is getting a trip to the cricket ground with a good friend. Nice!!
Michele: I think the pandemic will wane, but not in the near future. I am sure that medical scientists are doing their best to create a viable vaccine to protect us from the virus. I hope there is a break-through soon. Once they have a viable vaccine, they will need to gear up for large scale production so we can all be immunized. Every day, I send good wishes for the researcher’s success. They are our best hope.
Pip: That is one fine piece of training equipment! I hope you’ll let Kirby have a turn riding it once in a while after he gets one.
We have sunshine and more sunshine on our weather forecast. Predictions are for many days in the 80’s and a couple of days that hit the low 90’s. Our air quality is still okay and it is pleasant outside today.

Pip – does the bike just have that one holder for a water bottle? I can’t see, there might be one on the other side.
The perfect vacation? A cruise and then stay in a Caribbean Hotel with all the amenities
Faye – Vince had some of his intestine removed quite a few years ago. He always asks if he gets a discount because they don’t have to go as far…no response.
Maria NYC – welcome
Yvonne – I’m so jealous of you having your sourdough starter. Since mine is in Ohio (thank you FedEx) Vince doesn’t think I’ll get it until Wednesday. Boo! I’m so looking forward to getting it. I’m so fed up with trying to get the starter going and not succeeding.
Mahjongg tonight!
