@skippygirlsmom great job on your virtual HM - really nice bling and freebies!
@ContraryMaryMary that sounds like a fun even to run in the forest. Looks gorgeous too.
@Teresa502 I'm sorry the marathon was rough, but you did it, congratulations! A marathon is a huge accomplishment no matter what. Sounds like a great event put on by your friends and supporters. Hope that massage works wonders, and take some nice rest.

I didn't post on Sunday with the forums down, but I did my longest run of the last couple of months. Starting in the cold rain but ending in fairly decent running weather. I'm just glad to get a little bit of mileage in finally.
Yesterday was another big hike. I'll post more later when I'm more recovered but I did my short trail run during the hike again - this time about 14 hours in and just as it was getting dark, wearing hiking boots and spikes. It was not very fun.5 -
@Teresa502 Sounds like a tough race, but you did it! I'm so impressed by the coordination of this virtual run. It's so awesome that your friends rallied and made this a such a neat experience for all of you.
@katharmonic Running during those long hikes, especially in boots and spikes, sounds crazy!!2 -

Monday speed work, with a couple tweaks to get it within my available time window this morning. It was in the upper 60's and the humidity was not too bad. Really pretty nice weather. My training app made another fitness adjustment after my race this weekend, so the pace targets for my speed work are getting faster, but so far I've been able to keep up.
I am currently looking at a couple of potential replacement HMs for early 2021 since the Houston HM went virtual. I really like to train my distance up once a year even though I have no plans to maintain that mileage year-round. Without a race, I just don't have the motivation to put in the mileage I need to get there.
So far I have found a small one not too far from my house on New Years Day (Texas Marathon). It was started to help a friend complete a marathon a week for a year goal when he couldn't find one that week and it has kept going since then. It looks like a fun race. Some people run in costumes and you are handed a themed stuffed animal along with your medal at the end, which is just so quirky and fun. It's interesting because it's a BQ marathon and a HM but it's capped at only 700 people.
The other is the Galveston HM/Marathon in late February. It would make a nice weekend getaway, just a couple of hours from home. The weather in Galveston can be a little dicey in February. It's guaranteed to be a bit windy as you run along the seawall, but if it is cold, it will feel REALLY cold with the wind. I had a friend who did a half IM in April a couple of years ago and got pulled from the course with hypothermia. Might be worth a shot, but I would definitely have to plan for some serious weather contingencies.
Maybe I'll do both...2 -
@skippygirlsmom awesome job on your virtual HM - cools swag, and nice feet!!!
@ContraryMaryMary glad you had a fun outing with the girls. Forest looks amazing.
@Teresa502 running a marathon without the big crowd and support is a tough ask. Glad you had some good friends to support you. Finishing, no matter what time, is a huge accomplishment. Very cool that a retired Marine was able to be there at the finish.
@quilteryoyo Yes, we moved Aunt Betty into the Memory Care facility about 3 weeks ago. Both she and my wife are adjusting, but honestly, Betty has no idea where she is. Everyday she asks if she can go home to her mom and dad (she thinks she is a little kid and is being punished for doing something bad). Really sad.7 -
@Teresa502 Congratulations on your marathon! I'm glad you all were able to make the best of the cancelation. It sounds like it was tough, but you were tougher! I also echo the question of how the guy is feeling who only trained up to 5 miles!
@Scott6255 that's so sad about Aunt Betty. I want to give her a hug.
Today I had hills on the plan, and wanted to get a total of at least 5k. So I went to the woods and did a few hills that are shorter (& I think steeper) than my regular hill. I had to do a lot of repeats to get in the distance, so one hill got repeated enough times that I lost count. My legs started feeling like rubber towards the end, so I was glad it was time to head home. I guess that means it's doing something5 -

Thank you and everyone else for your encouraging words.
I haven't heard from him today but a couple of hours after he finished he was definitely walking funny!

@katharmonic Running after hiking for 14 hours...and in boots and spikes! You are amazing. Hope you got some rest today.
@Scott6255 I'm with @polskagirl01 and want to give Aunt Betty, and your wife, a hug. Dementia is so hard on everyone involved.
Sounds like a tough hill repeat session today @polskagirl01 !2 -

GUYS LOOK WHAT JUST CAME IN THE MAIL.
[That's actually the face I'm making. WOW!]
I am impressed that you got yours first. You must be closer to where they are manufactured.
@katharmonic Those pictures are beautiful. I'd say well worth the time and effort it took to get there.6 -
Hello lovely people. Over 250 posts behind so will take me a while to catch up but I wanted to say hi before doing so. As you may have guessed, this month has been a bit of a disaster for running. I got a bit overwhelmed juggling full-time work, single parenthood, trying to fix my broken house and doing it all solo as the pandemic has stolen all my childcare help!!
But after just a few weeks I feel sluggish and unfit and so fed up. So I gritted my teeth and bought the treadmill, spent all day Saturday building it with just my 9yo daughter to help me - the thing weighs over 80kg and involved a depressing number of bolts and screws so I’m amazed I managed it. Ran 4 miles on it on Sunday and got a run in today. I’ve also managed to sort out some of those house repairs and it’s only two days into the 1 week break from school so I’m not doing too badly!
October will be a terrible month for my mileage but hopefully the sacrifices this month will pay off for the rest of winter.
Hope you’re all well - have missed you all x

^^^^ This... EXACTLY!!!
@Faebert hang in there! You are doing great!!!3 -
@Faebert sorry to hear you've been having a rough time. I hope the treadmill helps, and that you can get back into the routine you want.
I did my long run today, 25 km and it was slow but good. I tried to be in the forests as much as possible (no mask required there) and my mood was definitely better on the trails.
It's becoming more of a "golden autumn" here:8 -
No run for me again today. My quads are still sore but not as bad as yesterday. I did a couple of gentle stretch videos this morning and hope to get out for a run in the morning.
@katharmonic – those pictures from your hike are gorgeous but I am not ready for snow! What was the temperature during your hike? Did you ever get warm enough to take your jacket off?
@polskagirl01 – Beautiful Fall foliage!
@Faebert – I have zero mechanical skills so I’m in awe of your putting together the treadmill all by yourself! I hope having it will relieve some stress you have going on now. Hugs!
@noblsheep – The medal is beautiful!

@katharmonic Great hiking pictures. For some reason, I wasn't expecting to see snow.
@noblsheep That's awesome! You must be the first one to receive it. Can't wait to get mine.
@Faebert Sorry you have had such a rough month, but sounds like you are making progress. I'm impressed that you were able to put the treadmill together by yourself. Sometimes handling life is hard. You are doing great.
@polskagirl01 Nice run and love the forest trail and golden colors. Mom and dad and I are planning to go for another drive today to take in all of the colors around here.
@Teresa502 Hope the stretching helped and your quads feel better.3 -

Cloudy, damp, mid 40s F and no wind this morning. Felt slow, so ran slow.
I don't pay a lot of attention to heart rate, other as an indicator of what my relative effort is. Noticed that my maximum heart rate Sunday was 215 BPM, while my maximum heart rate today was 169 BPM.

@Faebert good for you for getting your treadmill assembled and using it! Hang in there, you're doing great.
@noblsheep the medal turned out so cool.@katharmonic – those pictures from your hike are gorgeous but I am not ready for snow! What was the temperature during your hike? Did you ever get warm enough to take your jacket off?
@Teresa502 and @quilteryoyo - there was really only snow/frost on the trees and greenery up above 3500 feet or so. There wasn't snow on the ground, but lots of ice. I think the temps started around 28 degrees when we set out at 4 am. It really varied a lot but the sun came out and it felt pretty good, maybe into the 40s at points, but of course colder at the summits. I never took my jacket off I did take my gloves off and on a lot. I also wore fleece-lined hiking pants which was a good move, and my new Salomon hiking boots did well. I certainly tested out their waterproof nature.
@Teresa502 hope your quads feel better after some more stretching. Mine are pretty sore and yoga helped some today.
@polskagirl01 beautiful fall colors. Looks like a lovely place to run and clear your head.

Treadmill this morning before yoga, but I didn't get there on time so I had to finish up after. My Garmin is still not even close to being calibrated to the treadmill pace. I may need to do a longer run on it. It is frustrating because I keep adjusting it and it shows up fine in Connect, but in Strava it doesn't adjust to the new distance so I've been deleting and re-entering manually. Let's get it together everybody!

GUYS LOOK WHAT JUST CAME IN THE MAIL.
Wow it looks great! I showed it to my husband and he says it turned out perfect, he wasn’t sure how they would handle the two sided ribbon but they did exactly what he requested.
@Teresa502 amazing job finishing your marathon and kudos to your support and finish line crew for making it feel like the real thing! @quilteryoyo I agree the Marine really do have the best uniform!5 -
Got 5 miles running and a hike on the far side of the river Monday. Getting used to the gravel, my legs don’t feel as beat up as the first time. It’s really pretty back there. There were two large horse trailers at the trail head when we arrived and we kept seeing fresh hoof prints (and fresh poops!) but we never did see any horses. I think they turned the opposite direction from us and looped back around before we finished. We did see two bobcats though! Two! I looked it up and bobcats are solitary ordinarily, and this isn’t their breeding season, but sometimes they remain with their mothers through the winter, so I’m guessing it was either two young brothers or a mom and mostly grown child. They were standing right in the middle of the trail when we sighted them and just looked at us as calm as could be, then swiftly vanished into the underbrush.
My husband also glimpsed what he guessed was a gray fox run across the trail but wasn’t sure. We peeked back and yep, big brushy pile exactly like the fox den they used to have in our back pasture. And then a dozen strides down the road we could smell it. Yep! Definitely a fox!
Weather was windy, nippy, and foggy. I got to try out my new sleeves. I was a little chilly setting out, never got hot enough to want to take them off. They were comfortable though.
I liked this big golden tree.
New sleeves!
This was where we stopped - according to the map the trail ends about half a mile before this point, but we didn’t figure that out until later.3 -

Easy run this morning. Temps are right at that cutoff where I have problems getting my clothes right. It was 59F, windy, and humid. I wore a t-shirt and shorts which would have been fine for the temp, but once the wind picked up I was actually a little underdressed. Also, if I were doing a longer run or speed I might have been ok, but not enough for an easy run. I really need to remember that I own sleeves. Today would have been the perfect day for them.5 -
@teresa502 Great job on finishing your marathon!
@noblsheep The medal looks great!
@katharmonic Beautiful hiking photos!
@faebert Sorry things have been hard lately. Great job on getting the treadmill together. I hope it helps.
@polskagirl01 What a lovely fall run.
@rheddmobile How scary to see not just one bobcat but two. Great photos too.
@martaindale The one good thing about running in warm weather is I always know how to dress.
I decided to move today's run to Friday. It was 32°F feels like 23°F with freezing drizzle this morning. I don't have the right gear for that kind of weather and I don't want to slip and fall running on icy roads in the dark. Especially when my race is less than 2 weeks away. I'm not sure if I will try to run tomorrow or not. It's only supposed to be 36°F tomorrow and rainy but not icy. I haven't decided if I will tough it out or not. But it should be nicer on Thursday and Friday.4 -
Morning guys!
I've missed so much! The medals loom amazing! Congratulations to some, I see @Tramboman did a half? And hugs to everyone who needs them.
Been a long weekend here and zi was on call all weekend, so basically 4 nights of about 4-6hrs of very broken sleep. I felt like I had a newborn again, without the cuteness. I was absolutely exhausted by the end of yesterday I was asleep by 830pm!
So I didn't run on Monday, I was so tired I worried I would get another injury. And yesterday was just as bad. So I ran this morning. It was chilly and WET! and absolutely glorious. It was wonderful being out.
Some good news, I've officially been pain free for a week! I have had 1 run in that time, but no niggles, pain or weirdness. A tough of tightness after Fridays run, but it didn't last long. I see the physio today and I want to bring in more running days (currently doing Mon and Fri only), and I have an event I want to build towards.
There's a half in 4 months, @ContraryMaryMary and anyone else who's done a calf injury, how likely is it ill be able to run it? I'm thinking the 8k is more sensible, but man I really want to do the half haha.
It's flat if that means anything.6 -
Oh and I forgot to share. You guys get bears, coyotes, and other deadly creatures. Because of the rain and warmth, NZs most dangerous creature has come out! Open to suggestions on how to deal with these wee beasties...

I signed up for a 15K trail race, it’s similar to the one I ran last year except I did the 5K and this year decided to do the 15K. I have done a lot of volunteering for the race director so he gave me 50% the race. Couldn’t pass it up.
@Avidkeo I have those in my yard, I call them my running mates.

@kgirlhart Unless you are a rabbit the bobcats aren’t all that scary, they are super shy. I grew up on a farm with bobcats on the property and only once saw one, although we often heard them screaming in the mornings! They sound like human women, it’s freaky.
@skippygirlsmom The sleeves are Decathlon. I tend to forget Decathlon even exists but everything I’ve bought from them was inexpensive but good quality.3
