Wow, the site is back up!!
15 miles for me this morning. Longest run this year so far. Miraculous running weather today. Actually had to wait (and slept in) until it warmed up. 50°F and 7 mph wind. The perfect sweet spot. Felt really good the whole time, but the few middle miles were a little bit hard. We only get a handful of days like this a year, and was glad I was able to take advantage of it.

Hey we’re back up!
@Scott6255 Glad you had a great run! We had almost the same weather, except JUST on the other side of that sweet spot - 49 degrees, 11 mph wind, and it started to drizzle right as we arrived at the park! I was all set to run in my brand new sleeves but the rain just pushed it over the limit for me.
Off came the sleeves, and on went my light rain jacket. I hate being wet in a strong wind. Love my jacket though, although it was really too warm for a jacket it has zippers and vents all over so it gets a ton of airflow. Today reminded me why I have never bothered to buy sleeves before - here it is rarely the right temperature for them unless it’s also raining. These ones were such a great color though, highlighter yellow shading into celery green. Hopefully I will get to try them out soon!
Despite the gloomy weather we had a good run. Today is our day for faster running, not really organized enough to be called speedwork. I wanted to do a nice 5k time just in case our Halloween costumes turn out to be a terrible idea, so we have a backup time for the virtual race. Ended up with 28:54 which is a solid time for us right now.
Ran the first half mile really hard so we could compare it to the probably fictional half mile PR Strava gave me for my last saunter behind the grocery store. I think it’s official, there is something weird about how my gps handles that stretch of road behind Kroger. Today’s fast half (which was downhill, and we really ran it hard) was 4:08, which is in line with my expectations given my current level of fitness - the fastest single mile I’m capable of right now is about 8:45 so I would expect a fast half to be maybe fifteen seconds faster than 4:22. The 4:08 from today turns out to be my THIRD fastest half mile time on Strava - behind the most recent two runs I did behind Kroger, which were both done pretty easy. Yeah.... Something is definitely fishy.
We saw several hawks sitting on poles with their feathers fluffed out. I guess they dislike the chilly rain too!

I'm at 70 miles for October (running only). My plan was to do 30 this coming week so works out perfectly!
11 miles as planned despite getting "lost". I wasn't really lost, just missed my planned turn. I forgot to put it in my notes for my trail route. No biggie, turned around and made a new route on the fly that was almost perfect. .10 short of 11 so just ran in a circle to finish 🤣7 -

I got to run a real life race today on easy trails through a wildflower farm.
Race Report: One of my goals for the year was to get my 10k under an hour. My prior fastest was 1:01:40 so I really felt I could get there. A cold front blew in last night and it was quite a bit colder than it was forecasted for when I packed. It was 47F this morning. Luckily I brought a warmer outfit option. Light Capri leggings and a wool blend long sleeve. Turned out to be perfect.
They gave the option to defer when they initially rescheduled and I think quite a few people did. It turned out to be a small group even though both a 5k and 10k were running. The 5k was 1 loop and the 10k was 2.
They started in rough waves to keep people spread out and the first wave was the 10:00 a mile and under group. When I finished the first loop, I was on pace to make my goal. The second loop was harder for sure. I hadn't pushed this hard for this many miles in a while. Coming around the back of the second loop I started lapping the 5k walkers and that really kept me pushing because it gave me people to pick off. Even if they were walking, it helped.
The course turned out to be a hair short, so my official finish time was 58:44 but I had to run another 45 secs or so until my watch agreed I was done, so my Garmin time was 59:20. Either way, I made it in under an hour. I even won 2nd in my age group!13 -
@martaindale Congratulations on reaching your goal and getting an age group award! I love the medals!1

@rheddmobile - I had to laugh at your description of the European hamster in the video!
I have had the same frustration with Target online ordering. Same deal - make you order a bunch of stuff to see the requirements and then it all gets shipped separately anyways. When I can I do order pickup or I go elsewhere (Amazon usually).
@HonuNui - so cool that you got the 2 triggerfish to show off both their appearances! I love watching the octopi change colors too!
@Camaramandy648 - been there done that teenage girl thing - this too shall pass! Hang in there.
@Tramboman - I reserve the right to complain about warm weather in October/November. I finally had a cooler run (low 70's on Monday) and today was downright lovely after the 90+ weather last week. We are supposed to get hot and windy again though this coming week, back into the mid to high 80's . I guess that is better than 90+ though.
@Teresa502 - I love all the support you are getting for your MCM! That retired Marine sounds so sweet!
@katharmonic - the hiking pictures are beautiful! Hope you had a better evening and day!
@RunsOnEspresso - glad your foot is better and you were able to get your 11 miles in!
@martaindale - awesome job on your IRL 10K!!
I headed out for my run this morning wanting to do a tempo run but my hip was so stiff I almost called and went home. I am so glad I didn't. It was cloudy, overcast with a light breeze and mid-60's and maybe even a little drizzly. Almost perfect running weather. I made it over to the trail and decided to use an app workout for motivation. I don't have the Peloton app any longer so I used the Gold's Gym equivalent and did an endurance build with a 5 min run/1 min recovery, 6 min run/1 min recovery, 8 min run/1 min recovery. The 8 min run was not successful but the others were great so coming back I tried to do just 5-6 min runs with a minute or so recovery. It worked fairly well but my legs were tired I think from all the lunges and squats in my HIIT class yesterday. Also I realized I really don't like the Gold's Gym app much and wouldn't pay for it (I have it for free right now). It wasn't very motivating. Just the 'trainer' telling you when the intervals were starting and not much else. I didn't like the music either which was pretty much the entire workout. Before I turned around for home I came across all the birds... There must have been fish or some other reason they were all together in one area, pelicans, egrets, a heron, cormorants, and ducks. I also crossed paths with a coyote. It was ahead of me, came up from the river and ran across the trail through a break in the fence and into the settling pond area. I took a picture but it was pretty far away at that point. Funny I had been noticing some large paw prints in the dirt and thinking there might have been a large cat prowling around. They definitely weren't from the coyote though.Date..........Miles........Total

Nice long run last night. It was a little over 10 degrees, so long tights for the first time this season. All felt good.
Recently I've been doing this change of perspective thinking exercise for when I'm lacking motivation. I imagine that I'm watching the back of my head and controlling my actions like I'm playing a third person shooter game. Last night I was thinking about giving up around the 7km point - nothing hurt, I wasn't tired, just bored and wanted it to be over. Kept a lot of imagination to keep going, but did.
Not going to make goal for the month (again). One of these months...
@shanaber Cool! Coyote!
@martaindale Congrats on a great race and AG placing!

@martaindale Great racing!
@rheddmobile have you inspected your Strava maps for the questionable segment? Sometimes if I have a weird result I'll find some clues in the line (like if it jumps around, skips, or seems to latch on to a track I wasn't following). That's frustrating though, because now you have to go run faster somewhere else to bury the inaccurate PR's
Yesterday I ran all over the woods. I think I hit all of the paths (except one that's on the map but isn't a path IRL anymore due to a tree that came down on it). Wanted at least 10k and got it done. Today was technically a rest day, but the sun was shining so nicely and I was awake early, so I went out on the bike for one of my shorter routes. I did take the option to add an extra hill though. It felt just about perfect for today.
With no races in sight, I'm planning to bump up my distances to around 50k/week. I know it's doable and wrote out several different ways to fit it in each week while still keeping a cycling day and a rest day (or 2) each week... now to just do it.7 -
@AlphaHowls That's some streak! You're amazing!
@Scott6255 Glad you had such great running weather and fantastic long run!
Nice pace @rheddmobile ! Yeah, something fishy about that section of road. I've had something similar happen here, but only once. Next time it was fine. Are you running at the same time of day at Kroger? Wondering if the satellites are at some weird angle then.
@RunsOnEspresso Nice run. Hahaha on being "lost." That is a philosophical question I have often asked myself..."Are you really lost if you know where you are, but aren't where you intended to be?"
@martaindale Congratulations on your PR and 2nd place in your age group. Looks like a great place for a race!
@shanaber Great run! Glad you got out and did it. Love the pictures!
@noblsheep Glad you figured out what works for you to keep going when you just want to quit. Great job!
3 -
@martaindale Great job getting under an hour! That is awesome!
There are so many factors involved in the course distance. My garmin never matches because course are measured on tangents but we don't run those usually. And gps is always questionable. Usually my watch has me over the mileage. One 5k I did the course was definitely short. Everyone had like 2.85 or something on their watch and apps. It's my fastest 5k but I don't count it because I know it wasn't 5k.
@shanaber Have you tried the nike app? They have guided runs with suggested spotify playlists. I've always used my own music or podcast instead of spotify though.
@quilteryoyo definitely a deep philosophical question. It worked out mileage wise but now I have to redo my routes for 12 and 13 miles runs to make sure I cover different trails.2 -
Yesterday’s plan was a short 5 minutes warmup, 20 at 10:11-11:11 pace, 5 minutes cool down. I had guests coming after lunch, so the short run worked out well.
My friend group had our annual pumpkin carving party. We have done it for most of the last 15 years. Three of us have always done it, and then spouses and a couple of others were added. I ate a lot of food and sangria, so I am going to try to be good today. I have a long run planned, but I have missed Fedex a couple of times (they came during the party and didn’t knock, just left a door tag), so I am trying to stick around until the truck comes. I just hope they come earlier rather than later so I can get the run completed.

Yesterday I ran the Bridge Street Half Marathon virtually. It’s a local race that was in April (virtual) and I wasn’t ready to run it and they decided to have another so this time I registered. It’s run by our local Fleet Feet. The swag was a ¼ zip and a medal, then they had a bunch of volunteer shirts they never used so they added them along with an Organic Honey Stinger gel which I love. The day started off rainy so I waited a bit and was pretty much the only one on the greenway. I needed to run a local “virtual” 10K also so I did that at the same time. These little local races are being used to raise money for various organizations around town, they have been like $10 to sign up and there’s one or two times during a 2 week period people can run together and the rest of the time you run the course when you want. You can post pictures and post your finish. They have been giving away gift certificates for various things and this week we got t-shirts, sunglasses, discount coupons and a free chicken sandwich from Chick fil A. Can’t beat that. The picture in the spoiler is my feet, I posted it on their facebook site and they changed their cover photo to it, glad I shaved my legs ha ha
Trying to catch up on the posts. Work has been a bear, my team is setting up a curse jar for me and we will use the money for lunch. We figure we can eat steak every day ha ha.
@HonuNui great picture of the fish, cool how they change color like that.
@Camaramandy648 I can’t remember the last time I slept past 7:00 for some reason it’s almost impossible. Probably because I’m so used to get up before the chickens and my new pupper Champ is programmed for early too and he walks on me like 5:30 am. Teenaged girls are fun….
@kristinajeang hope the pain is the shoes, that is usually a sign for me
@Teresa502 good luck…well by now it’s more like, great job on marathon I’m sure. Love the temporary medals.
@kgirlhart glad the new job is going well and you like it there.
Super running @AlphaHowls
Great 15 miles @Scott6255

Woohoo @martaindale super time and AG place!! Love the pictures
@shanaber I didn’t know Gold’s Gym had an app, interesting. Wow on the birds.

I ran 11 miles this morning. It was about 52°F and I was good in shorts and a t-shirt, but I should have started out with gloves. I need to remember that if it is below 55°F then I need gloves. I think the weather may be like this for my half in 2 weeks which will be nice. It is supposed to be near freezing and raining on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. I'm planning 6 miles on both of those days, but I may have to play it by ear. I can handle cold and I can handle rain, but the combination of the two is not my favorite. Especially early in the morning when it will still be dark.
The run today was pretty good. No strange dogs joined me. I saw one loose dog that I changed course for and one who had gone back into his yard by the time I got there. Which was good because to alter my route from there would have taken me too far out of my way.
Today's run got me a little past my October goal. I guess the rest of they month's miles will just be bonus miles.
@shanaber Great run and cool photos. I would be so scared to see a coyote.
@marisap2010 Cool pumpkins! I never carve mine. I like to say that it is because if you don't cut them they don't rot and you can use them as Thanksgiving decorations. But honestly, I just can't stand to touch the pumpkin "guts".
@skippygirlsmom Great job on the half! Nice swag!

@skippygirlsmom Glad you had a good HM and 10K. Nice when you can run them simultaneously! Love the swag.
@kgirlhart I don't like rain and cold either. Maybe it will snow instead. That's fun to run in. Great job out your 11 miles this morning and reaching your Oct goal already.2 -
@quilteryoyo We hardly ever get actual snow. We mostly get freezing rain with sometimes a dusting of snow. I hope it won't be icy. I don't want to skip runs right before my race, but I also don't want to slip and injure myself.1

I'm back from my girls' weekend away. Feeling very refreshed. We entered an event called 'We Run the Forest", and much like it says, we ran in the forest, except for when the hills were too steep, then we walked! As I'm a week out from my major event of the year, this was a 'fun' event for me. Coach wanted me to keep my heart rate below 151, which was almost impossible with the 300 metres of climbing, but, I managed an average of 155 by walking most of the uphills and running at a very cruisy pace for the rest of it.
Both my friends ran fairly hard - one coming second in our age group in the 12k, the other running the half distance - so I was very fresh compared to them the next day. We took ourselves off to the Blue Lake for a run the next morning. One didn't run at all as the half had aggravated her hamstring, and the other who ran with me was feeling very tired so we took it slowly. After one lap (it's 5.4km around) she was done, so I ran a little more, much faster, but really simply enjoying being in nature and beside the water.
The weather was perfect for running the whole weekend - a pleasant temperature (about 16-18 Celsius), overcast, and completely still. However, I was happy to return home to blazing sunshine and the first feeling of summer. It's been a stunner here today - about 25˚C - so we took the girls off to the beach where they had a most marvellous time playing in the freezing surf!
A few pics from my trip - Rotorua is a thermal wonderland so there's lots of steaming water and boiling mud (and a nasty stink of sulphur in the air!). The event medals were very pretty - each year they change the colour of the leaf, which makes me want to go back and do it again!9 -
Recently I've been doing this change of perspective thinking exercise for when I'm lacking motivation. I imagine that I'm watching the back of my head and controlling my actions like I'm playing a third person shooter game.
This is so funny! My husband got a kick out of it as a gamer. We were imagining what kinds of stories you would make up as the player in the game running around.

I finally got in my “long run” yesterday afternoon. Garmin coach had me do a 10 minute warmup, 30 minutes at 10:11-11:11 pace, and 10 minute cool down. Not bad at all. No runs scheduled again until Wednesday, so I guess I will try to get in a walk and maybe some yoga tonight.
Hubby has decided when he returns from deployment that he wants to complete the entire Couch to 5k. If you’ll recall, he hadn’t really run since getting out of the military 8 years ago but did a few runs with me before he left last time. There is a trail 5k I want to do in January, so I am trying to convince him to do it too, even though he won’t be finished with the program quite yet. I told him he can run/walk it. I figure it could be a big boost for him to do a race and get a medal and such. He really wants to get back in shape.11 -

5 miles this morning. Was cold, rainy, and windy this morning. So opted for the treadmill. Days like this is why I am glad I bought it.

Yesterday, I ran my virtual Marine Corps Marathon. We met at our finish line at 6:00 am, loaded into a van and were shuttled up the mountain to the starting point. It was still dark and sprinkling rain but the temp was around 57F which although humid, was good. Our first aid station was at mile marker 10.7 and I felt pretty good. Refilled my water, grabbed a couple of Pringles, and kept going. The next aid station was at 17.8 miles. Our friends had music going, a bubble machine along with water, Gatorade and snacks. I refilled my water bottle with Tailwind and ate a waffle. I had 2 gus prior to this and although my tummy was feeling ok, I just couldn’t think of eating another one. I changed from my trail shoes to my road shoes here. I had never run over 10-12 miles in the trail shoes so I wasn’t sure about wearing them for the entire 26.2.
As I left that aid station, I was really feeling tired. I got to around mile 20 and hit that proverbial wall. I’ve hit it before but this time was very different. I was light-headed and almost passed out twice. I sat down on a bench along the trail for about 7 or 8 minutes and made myself eat another gu. I mostly walked miles 21-23. I hit the finish area around mile 24.6 so I had to go out another .85 or so miles and turn back. My worst marathon time ever. It wasn’t pretty, but I finished it.
After the run, we hung out and took pictures, had some snacks and visited outside. As soon as I got home, I ran an Epsom salt bath. My quads are feeling pretty sore this morning. I have a massage scheduled for later this morning.
Our crew at the starting line. The one guy ended up finishing first at 4:38. This was his first marathon and the farthest he had run in training was 5 miles...
Coming in at the second aid station.
Cpl Foster who was at the finish line to congratulate us and put medals around our necks

@ContraryMaryMary Sounds like a really fun weekend! Love the pictures!
@marisap2010 Great run! Hope your husband follows through with the plan. Would be great to be able to run together.
@Scott6255 Glad you were able to use the treadmill this morning. Did your houseguest leave?
@Teresa502 Couldn't decide whether I should "like" or "hug" your post. Glad you were able to finish. Sorry it was such a hard run for you. That guy is amazing to run a marathon when he hadn't run over 5 miles before. I can't even imagine. Can he walk this morning? Love the pictures. The bubble machine was a nice touch. Marines have the best dress uniforms!3
