@shanaber Had no idea it had fondant in it. No wonder it tastes different.
@polskagirl01 That's a lofty goal, but I know that you can do it!
@eleanorhawkins Glad your dad is doing well. I hate it that your step mom can't visit him and that he won't turn on his phone. Is there a landline in his room you can call? The hospitals here still have those. Would he talk on it?0 -
Had my pre-op appointment today. Most everything went well. Didn't get to talk to the anesthesiologist because he decided that the shut door to the room I was waiting in meant someone else was in there and he didn't knock to check and just went on his way. Then, when asked to come back he said he would, "in a while." Twenty five minutes later, after getting some of my questions answered by someone else, I left. In my opinion, he was being a jerk about the entire thing. I hope he isn't the person who does my anesthesia next week.
The only surprise was that I am now in quarantine after having a CoVID test as part of the pre-op stuff. It makes sense that they wouldn't want me to go out and become infected after I had the test, but it just never crossed my mind that that would be the case. It sure did mess up my plans for things I was going to do the day before surgery.
One of the "tests" I had to do was to walk with the physical therapist (not sure that was his title) for 6 minutes to get a baseline they can compare to before I leave the hospital. When I told him how much I had been running, he was very impressed. He said as well as I did and being in such good shape, he fully expects me to have a quick recovery. I hope he knows what he is talking about.
I am tired and mentally wiped out, so am going to take the rest of the day "off." I hope I can get in another easy run tomorrow.9 -
@quilteryoyo thanks. He eventually turned the phone on and called her... she said he actually sounded fine and said he felt fine (we think he's probably still off his head on morphine!) but that he has a black eye, which is apparently common. He might be able to go home on Saturday, but she'll have to give him injections to prevent blood clots, and he hates needles so she may have to give him a matching black eye to get him to behave. All in all it sounds like he's doing great, SO relieved. Maybe I'll finally sleep tonight.
Sorry about your jerk anesthesiologist. Sadly some doctors think way too much of themselves. My grandmother used to say "They might save lives, but their poop still smells!" My dad was quaratined for 2 weeks before going in for his operation, too. I think the PT guy is right, you're in such good shape you're very likely to cope very well and recover fast. We're all rooting for you, too.

@eleanorhawkins Good to hear that your dad is doing well and may be able to go home soon! Hopefully he'll be ok with the shots. Thanks for rooting for me. I had to laugh at your grandmother's saying...love it!!!!!0

I finally got out and ran today. It wasn't raining and wasn't as cold as the last couple of days, but the 18 mph north winds made it really cold. It was an ok run, but honestly I was just glad to get it done.
My left foot is feeling kind of achy now. I can't decide if it is from the cold (I think I have a little arthritis in that foot), if I am getting tendonitis, or if it us just the usual pre-race paranoia. There is no swelling or redness or bruising. Maybe I'll just run my next few runs easy. The race is on the 7th and it has already been postponed twice. Maybe it is just the gray skies making me feel discouraged. I just want to do well in this race and I don't want anything to prevent me from running it.
@eleanorhawkins I'm glad your Dad's surgery went well, praying for good results. I hope you are able to get some sleep.
@quilteryoyo I'm glad the pre-op went well. Hopefully you'll have a nicer anesthesiologist.

Your already at my January. Just take it slowly and carefully over the next month - basically, keep doing what you're doing. You'll be raring to go in December!
Which one are you doing?
Thanks so much! Looking at the Wellington around the bays, so should be a lot of fun, and since we didn't get to do the Wellington half this year. Hot though, 20th February!
I ran today. Another 4/2 intervals. I didn't bother checking my watch and actually thought I had another one to go, nope had done them all so had a nice 10min walk cool down. Calf continues to be fine in runs, and after runs. Any niggles appear in the evenings, but they are getting less frequent.
I also started weight lifting again. I lifted light because I knew the DOMS would be a killer. And yep, my hamstrings are not happy. Oh well.

@eleanorhawkins glad you dad is doing well, and continuing to he his stubborn self!1

Late checking in but I managed to get 9km done on the treadmill this morning. Squeezed in around home repair tasks and in horrible weather, so I’m feeling grateful to have it! I never listen to anything when I run normally, but this treadmill has a tablet holder so I decided to give it a go watching a series while I ran. I’m two episodes into The Handmaid’s Tale and it’s very affecting! Possibly a bit too much to cope with first thing in the morning...
I will probably get one more run in before the end of the month, but mentally I’ve written off October and am hoping for a more consistent November!
October total: 36.4m
October goal: 80m
5/10: 6.2m
7/10: 6.2m
12/10: 4.6m
19/10: 5m
25/10: 3.9m

Surgery update: I talked to the surgeon's nurse late this afternoon. The group that owns the hospital where I am having my surgery decided this afternoon that they are stopping ALL elective surgeries until the CoVID numbers get better - they are awful here right now. The surgeon went through all of his patient's files and decided on a case by case basis what would be better for each one. He decided it would be in my best interest to postpone mine. The hospital will re-assess the situation on Wednesday of next week, and every week thereafter, if necessary. If they allow elective surgeries again next week (doubtful, in my opinion) they would schedule me for the following Mon, Tues, or Wed. Since my bloodwork and everything else is good until then, I am to continue to quarantine until we see what happens on Wed. If the moratorium on surgeries continue, I'll have to have all the tests again, so can stop the quarantine at that point. So, it's all up in the air at this point.
@kgirlhart Hope your foot is okay and it is just paranoia.
@Avidkeo Glad your calf is doing so well. You did great on the rehab!

Sorry to hear that @quilteryoyo .1

Hello there! I’m late to the party but just remembered following this forum a couple years ago when I was running track in high school. I’ve run on and off since then, but with quarantine I’ve found it’s helping me keep my sanity LOL. Haven’t done much running this month (but a lot of walking that I never remembered to log!). Here’s what I’ve done this month:
18th - 2.49 km
19th - 1.83 and 1.6 km
20th - 1.6 km
21st - 3.5 km
23rd - 1.7 km
24th - 2.63 km
26th - 2.5 km
28th - 2.5 km
29th - 2.6 km
Planned for 31st: 2.5 km again haha
That’ll make October only 25.45 km but I’m excited to start doing this more consistently November! I feel like I’m getting a groove back. Last week I started a Run with Hal program for training for a 5k I’m doing in mid December. It’s kept me from going too far or too fast out the gate, which I think is the key to keep me feeling strong, positive, and consistent with my running!9 -

Stay positive. Things will work out.1 -
@quilteryoyo sorry about the surgery postponment. But really, that doesn't seem like it would be an elective surgery. Not to be gloomy, but that's serious since it could rupture at anytime. Please take it extra easy while those doctor's decide your fate 😒1
-
@quilteryoyo I'm sorry, that must be so hard after you prepared for it mentally and otherwise to have it postponed.

@quilteryoyo damn, sorry they postponed after you made the decision to have it done. Fingers crossed things will change again quickly (as they seem to be doing a lot this year)
@kat_ontherun welcome back!1 -
@quilteryoyo ohhh that's so frustrating! Especially after all the contemplating to do it or not!1
-
@quilteryoyo - that’s so frustrating, especially when you went through a careful process to decide to have the surgery. I hope that you get some good news on Wednesday. Hugs
@eleanorhawkins - what is it about stubborn dads?? My father hates mobile phones too, and hates all fuss so I’m sure would be exactly like yours. I’m relieved for you that all seems well - hope you can see him soon.2 -

Oh no! You were so close...
On a more positive note, they likely aren't used to having such healthy patients as you. Walking for 6 minutes? You could've run it!
Welcome back @kat_ontherun !
I am taking a rest day today and will make myself a lil' goal chart for my "40/40" challenge.3 -
@quilteryoyo I’m so sorry they postponed your surgery. I know the waiting just makes things worse.
@eleanorhawkins I’m glad your dad is doing well!1 -
I didn’t run again last night. I still had a bad headache, although not to the level of Wednesday night. Since the migraines are becoming more frequent again, I think I am soon going to need to visit a doctor to look at getting back on migraine meds.
Tomorrow, I have a 5k, so let’s hope I am in better shape by then! A cold front has come through following the tropical storm, and it looks like it is going to be around 45-50 degrees tomorrow morning. Brrrr.
5 -
@kat_ontherun Welcome back and sounds like you have a sensible plan for getting back into running.
@marisap2010 Hope the migraine continues to get better and you have a good race tomorrow.
Thanks everyone. @Scott6255 I was surprised too, but thought about it last night. The size of the aneurysm IS the minimum that they consider for surgical repair, so I'm sure he is thinking that it can still grow some before there is an issue. I'm sure he weighed that against the possibility of catching CoVID and decided it was in my best interest to wait. I'm disappointed, but hopefully I won't have to wait too long.
@polskagirl01 You are right about them not normally having a healthy patient needing heart surgery. You could just tell that they weren't used to that.4 -
10/1 – 5.23 miles
10/3 – 21.06 miles
10/5 – 6.08 miles

10/22 – 5.43 miles
10/25 – 26.25 miles
10/28 – 5.01 miles
10/29 – 4.09
Goal – 125 miles/125.62 miles to date
I was able to get out in between rain showers at lunch yesterday and get a small run in (yay for working from home). It was a lot of stop and go as about 1 ½ miles down the road a young dog starting running with me, into me, etc. He would run right across in front of me and I was afraid he was going to trip me up. He didn’t have a collar on and I have never seen him before so I didn’t know if he was a stray or lived at this one house. I tried to make him stay or go back to that house but he was having a good time running with me. He followed me all the way to my front porch. There was also a neighbor’s cow that had gotten out of the pasture and was grazing beside the road so I took it easy and gave her a wide berth so as not to startle her and have her run away. I was going to put her back in the pasture, but the gate was locked so I called the man who owns the farm when I got home and he was going to come over (he doesn’t live on this farm) and put her back in the field.
@polskagirl01 – Loved the candy corn video! I’ve resisted buying any this year but I’ve eyed it several times at the store. I like to mix the corn with peanuts – mmm mmm good!
@eleanorhawkins – glad you dad is doing well. I hope he continues to progress.
@quilteryoyo – Sorry your surgery has been postponed and you are now in limbo. Having to quarantine before surgery but not knowing when the surgery will be is just an added stressor. I saw on the news this morning that Ballad has a record number of COVID hospitalizations and only has 18 beds available. My co-worker whose husband also has an aneurysm that needs repairing was referred to Duke and has a consult there on Thursday.
Welcome @kat_ontherun! Glad you found a program that will ease you back into running but keep you accountable.
@marisap2010 – hope your migraine goes away soon. Good luck and have fun with your 5K tomorrow!

My parents who are 80 and 81 years old have a flip phone (no texting) that they turn on when they want to make a call and then promptly turn it back off to "save the battery"! Very frustrating being their only living child when you miss a rare cell phone call from them and then you can't call them back. They share the one phone between them and don't always remember to take it with them (because it's charging) when they leave home. They own a small parcel of land down on the river and have a camper set up on it. My dad was down there the other day getting ready to winterize the camper when he heard a noise and then the neighbor who lives in the house next door calling for help. The neighbor had fallen off a ladder on his deck and broken his leg. My dad went over but didn't have his cell phone with him and didn't know how to use the man's smart phone so the man had to call 911 himself. Parents! Although it does make me wonder what technology will be around when I'm 80 that I will refuse to embrace...
5 -
@Teresa502 Sounds like you had a very adventurous run! I hope the puppy dog has a home. He sounds cute and loving. Glad you knew who to call about the cow too. They can be dangerous when they are in the road. I hope your co-workers husband does well.

Today's run was much better than yesterday's. I ran 5.25 miles. It was actually colder today but there was not really any wind. Yesterday there were 18 mph north winds and it was kind of miserable. I taped my foot and it seemed to help. Probably just a placebo effect, but that's ok with me. I feel ready for the half next weekend so this week I am just going to try to take it easy and not worry that something will happen to prevent me from running.
Today's run puts me at 116.08 for October. I'll see you all over in the November thread. Has anyone started it yet?

Yes... I muttered a lot about my dad refusing to go anywhere near a mobile phone. He was an electronics engineer, designed and worked on a lot of stuff that was state of the art at the time.
That got me to thinking... I say that and think that about him, but my 15-year-old says and thinks the same about me and internet stuff (and TVs lol)3 -
@quilteryoyo I’m sorry to hear about the postponement. Also, hoping you already voted or made arrangements to vote absentee! I was reading an article today about how many of the people isolating because of Covid didn’t realize what a problem it would be. What a time to live in.
I am not doing too well. Had an episode of tachycardia yesterday following a short easy run which usually means a lupus flare inflaming my heart lining. Heart rate and bp normal today but my whole chest feels ick. I know from experience that if it is the same thing as in the past, going to the ER they won’t do anything for me except hook me up to an EKG, say huh you don’t seem to be having a heart attack, call your GP tomorrow. Of course there is no way to know for sure that it’s the same thing as in the past. So we went to the ER and they said I would have to wait in the waiting area for who knows how long since all rooms were full of Covid patients. So.... we said no thanks and boogied on out of there. Three hours later they pinged my phone to ask where I was. That was how long it took to get a TRIAGE nurse. For someone with an emergent heart issue.
In the past this particular type of lupus flare has laid me flat out in bed unable to do more than stagger to the bathroom for months at a time. I haven’t had one in a while and am praying hard.
So when we got home from the ER, we noticed my neighbor’s very elderly dog, which had been outside in the rain when we left, was still lying down in the rain by the front walk an hour and a half later. Husband goes over and neighbor won’t answer the door at first. He eventually did answer. He is going through treatment for pancreatic cancer and got confused and went to sleep forgetting he let the dog out to pee. My husband is going to be keeping an eye on him for a while.10
