@kgirlhart Unless you are a rabbit the bobcats aren’t all that scary, they are super shy. I grew up on a farm with bobcats on the property and only once saw one, although we often heard them screaming in the mornings! They sound like human women, it’s freaky.
@skippygirlsmom The sleeves are Decathlon. I tend to forget Decathlon even exists but everything I’ve bought from them was inexpensive but good quality.1 -
@skippygirlsmom - Great job on your race! Love the swag (of course it is FleetFeet) and the picture of your feet! Oh and awesome getting 50% off on your trail race entry!
@teresa502 - Awesome job on the MCM. Your support crew looks great and love that you had a Marine in full dress uniform to give you your medal! As far as you time is concerned I don't think I would worry too much about it being slow. It is always harder to race distances of any kind really without any crowd and all the other race hoopla and excitement.
@noblsheep - So exciting that you received your medal! Looks great!
@katharmonic - That hike looks awesome but so cold to me! No idea how you were able to run after all that hiking and with your boots and spikes!
@faebert - I hope you can get all the projects under control! Having the treadmill should help with getting you runs in and take some of the stress away. Great job that you and your daughter did putting it together. Has she tried it yet?
@polskagirl01 - Gorgeous fall colors!
@rheddmobile - I love seeing bobcats. Growing up we used to see them (solitary mostly) on the mountain and forest service roads. They are really beautiful animals.
No running for me since Saturday. I really thought (prematurely it appears now) that hitting my 100 mile goal would not be an issue and might even go well over. That was before winds and fires. The winds on Monday were intense (25-30mph sustained with gusts to 70mph) of course we always hope for no fires but electric wires got blown down in multiple areas and started fires. My BIL is close enough to one that he could see the flames from his upstairs balcony this morning. They haven't been evacuated yet. None were close to us to where we would need to evacuate but they were all around us with smoke and ash being blown over. The air quality has been terrible. Normal PPM good quality is 0-50ppm and we were sitting at 500ppm most of yesterday. It honestly looked like it was snowing grey snow yesterday. Today is better (around 200) but still very unhealthy. So I have been doing different online classes from my gym and off the Peloton app.
I am hoping I can run tomorrow morning, then Friday and Saturday and still make my goal - I only need 18 miles, should be doable. If need be I can add another short run on Sunday too.8 -
@rheddmobile Sounds like a great run. That is an awesome trail. Love all the wildlife that you see. We have bobcats around here too and you are right about their calls - very eerie.
@kgirlhart Smart to not run in those conditions. I would probably wait until Thursday, but then I'm a wimp.
@Avidkeo Yeah for no pain for a week!!! You are doing so good with your rehab. I hope the Physio lets you add in more running days. I think I would just make sure to not step on those beasties.
@skippygirlsmom I don't know if those people are on this forum or not. I got a request, and accepted it, from Arrowj653, but he hasn't really posted anything, except that he is now friends with lots of people. His profile is completely hidden too, so I'm thinking about deleting him - seems a little fishy to me. He sent me a few messages that were overly complementary, so I am thinking he is stalking for women. BTW, I just put him in the search area of this forum and he doesn't show up. I'm going to go over and delete him as a friend.
Those fires are awful @shanaber ! Hope you all stay safe and the air quality improves soon!
2 -
@rheddmobile That's really good to know. I've been told there is a bobcat near where I run on Sundays, but I've never seen it.
@quilteryoyo. I think I am going to wimp out again tomorrow and try for Thursday. 😊
@shanaber Those fires sound awful. Stay safe!0 -
I like @ContraryMaryMarys suggestion of the gumboots, except they aren't great for running in
Saw the physio, I am moving up my running to 3x a week next week, 5 min run, 1 min walk. Then 4x a week the following week, same plan. Then 3x a week run 20 mins, then 4x week run 20 mins.
I asked if I realistically run that half at the end of Feb, he sounded positive about it, so will do the above plan for 4 weeks, then look at a HM training plan,
Woo hoo!10 -
@Avidkeo That is great news! You've got this!
@Scott6255 Congratulations on meeting your goal for the month! Awesome!

My right quad - my usual weak spot - was really sore yesterday after my long run, but I went for a short ride with one of the kidsFor some odd reason due to COVID19, kids aren't allowed outside without an adult during the day on school days (unless going to/from school). Weekends and in the dark is supposedly virus safe??? Whatever. I went with him, and he recorded it on his activity log for gym class. It actually seemed to help. I foam rolled and stretched before bed, and woke up feeling completely fine. Cool! So I biked today on one of my medium-long routes, and it still feels good5
-
@polskagirl01 Glad your quad is feeling good today. That is an interesting CoVID rule. Humm. Makes you scratch your head.0
-
@kgirlhart @rheddmobile Agreed, bobcats are not a concern. They are small (15-40 lbs... about the size of a large house cat, sometimes slightly larger, rarely to they get to 40, but possible). And they are wild cats, so generally afraid of humans and will hide if they know you are nearby. The only wild cats that attack humans routinely as prey are tigers in the Sunderbans region. Other wild cats only rarely attack people, and only when they are threatened and feel like they have no choice. The recent cougar video from UT, for example, was protecting her cubs from a runner who got to close. Even then, she chased him off rather than attack.
I have only seen a bobcat in the wild once. It was in GA and was very far away. It crossed the dirt road I was hiking on and stopped halfway when it noticed me in the distance. Then it decided to scurry off into the deep growth and I never saw it when I looked into the woods when I reached that point. It was probably hiding and saw me, though... likely wanted to make sure I wasn't a threat. Usually they do that without ever being seen in the first place.4 -

I got out for a very slow 5 mile run around 6:30 this morning. It was rather cloudy but the skyline was a beautiful pink and blue with the sun trying to peak through the clouds. Three hours later and it’s currently completely cloudy and misting a light rain. Monthly goal is in sight!
@shanaber – Those conditions sound horrible and very scary for residents and animals in the area. I read this morning that two firefighters were critically injured fighting this one. Very sad indeed. Stay safe.
@Avidkeo – Yay for healing progress!
@rheddmobile – Love those sleeves! I remembering having a big discussion here last year about all the reasonably priced running goodies sold at Decathlon but I've never ordered anything from them.
I’ve never encountered a bobcat but appreciate everyone sharing their insights! Pretty sure I would tuck tail and turn in the opposite direction if I saw one!

Just a quick update, I've been lurking and liking but not feeling chatty.
My 'run it anyway to make sure Dad's op goes ok' solo HM on Saturday went well, I ended up racing it more than I had intended to. Legs are still a little angry with me, physio tomorrow to wring the knots out.
Dad's operation this morning went ok, I'm told he will stay in intensive care tonight and hopefully be moved to a ward tomorrow. Now we get to wait and see whether it was malignant, and what they intend to do next. When I was last able to speak to him on Sunday he said he was worried that them fiddling with his brain might leave him barking mad. We eventually agreed that given the current state of the world that might not actually be an entirely bad thing...
10 -
@eleanorhawkins Glad your dad's operation went well! I hope you are able to talk to him soon. Sounds like he still had his sense of humor. Waiting for results is so hard. I will keep you all in my prayers. Great job on racing the virtual HM.0
-
Did a treadmill run this afternoon. First run in 2.5 weeks due to an abundance of caution after having the heart cath. I have been walking a lot and getting close to 10,000 steps per day. I was pleasantly surprised that the run didn't feel too bad. (I did take it easy and did 4/1min intervals of run/walk @5.0/3.8 mph.) Ran three miles and walked one.
I have my pre-op visit tomorrow. Will be getting bloodwork, a CoVID test, and talking to the anesthesiologist. (Why can I spell anesthesiologist, but can't spell definately definitely?)7 -

Ha, no, no sense of humour at all, he really meant it. But it was an improvement on a few days beforehand, when he insisted over and over that he was going to die during the operation!10 -

@eleanorhawkins You and your dad are in my thoughts. Hoping you get good news.
Today was supposed to be 8 easy miles but it was a downpour with cold wind so we did 6.2 somewhat faster miles. Not too bad when we started out but by the time we were done I couldn’t feel my fingertips. I just have not mastered the art of dressing for a combo of rain and wind! By the way, dressmyrun thought today was T-shirt and shorts weather so... yeah... they have no clue either.
Also when the phone gets water droplets on the screen it thinks you are touching it, so it keeps randomly doing stuff. It called someone, and then played music. Last time I ran in the rain it sent a support message full of nonsense to Strava! It’s in a plastic baggie but when you start and stop a run the outside of the baggie gets wet and then it just does whatever it wants to.
I just keep telling myself, by the time February rolls around today’s weather will seem like a warm spring day, enjoy it while it lasts!
The silver lining to the rain was we saw exactly zero people on the entire Greenline, which is usually crowded. I believe I have mentioned before, Memphians are wussies about rain. And the other silver lining was the Greenline passes over a little creek which was flooding and going very fast. It was pretty.5 -
@Avidkeo, I forgot to reply to your question about a half in four months. Do it. Each time I did my calf was in November, but by March (four months) I was back up to speed. Your already at my January. Just take it slowly and carefully over the next month - basically, keep doing what you're doing. You'll be raring to go in December!
Which one are you doing?4 -
@Avidkeo great news on the recovery front.
@eleanorhawkins glad to hear your dad's operation was a success and good job doing your HM to ensure that! Positive vibes for the wait for news.
@quilteryoyo good job getting an easy run in! Best of luck with your preop appointment tomorrow.
@scott6255 great job reaching your goal. And great job @teresa502 and @Tramboman on being almost there. And @skippygirlsmom smashing your goal! Well done!

I, on the other hand, am not going to make my (really arbitrarily set) goal. October is generally a lower month for me, but usually it's been because of fall goal races I tapered for and then recovered from. No such excuses this time, just being busy and tired. I'm pretty surprised how many days I ran less than 3 miles, which has typically been my minimum except for my rest/recovery day. It is what it is though and of course I've still maintained my running streak - tomorrow will be 320 days. I was talking to a couple of others from my run club who are doing the year-long streak as well and we are all pretty over it. I'm looking forward to taking one day a week off again.
Anyway, not sure I'll add a whole lot to the total for the month over the next few days. I have one more planned hike this weekend and I'm spending the whole weekend up in the Adirondacks this time. So excited not to do the 24 hours awake thing again. But I really don't want to do another run during the hike, so I hope this one is going to be a shorter hike and I can run before or after. I do know that there is now snow on the ground at the summit, so this will be a cold one!6 -

@eleanorhawkins I am glad your dad’s surgery went well. I hope he gets good results.
No run for me last night. I had an awful migraine that started at work and continued throughout the evening. It isn’t totally gone this morning, but I am going to try to go to work for at least part of the day to get a few big things done. I can hopefully make up yesterday’s run tonight, although it might be at the gym since the remnants of that tropical storm are coming through. My power has already gone out once.6 -

I will come back later and get all caught up but wanted to post this for all of the lovers/haters of Candy Corn. Just a little bit of history2
-
Thanks @shanaber! I'm a candy corn lover. I can't get it here, but have some left from a package someone sent us a while back
@eleanorhawkins I hope your family gets some good news soon about your Dad! I'm sure it's tough waiting on results. You are on my mind.
I ran in the woods this morning, very slowly, and later went for a walk there with a friend. Tomorrow should be a rest day, and I'm ready for it.
I'm soon going to be entering my 40th year of life... so to celebrate, I've decided to aim for 40 weeks of running at least 40k 😃9 -
Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. They've moved him onto a ward now, he is apparently very bruised but doing well and the doctors are happy. He is refusing, however, to turn his phone on and is not allowed any visits at all due to the stupid virus, so my stepmother is relying on what the nurses tell her when she phones them. **sigh** I'm pretty impressed someone persuaded him to take a phone with him, he has always refused to even touch a mobile phone. Shame they didn't realise him taking it did not necessarily mean he would use it!10
