@rheddmobile Actually, I did not vote early. We went one day to try to do so, but the line was too long for mom and dad to stand in. I was hoping the lines would not be long on election day, so had just planned to vote at my poling place. I know I'm not supposed to, but my plan is to drive by where I vote on Tuesday. If there isn't a long line, I'm going to go ahead and vote. From the primary election, I know that everyone there will be wearing a mask like they are supposed to do, there shouldn't be a huge crowd, and I will take all precautions. I feel the risk will be very minimal.
So sorry to hear about your issues. I hope it isn't a lupus flair up. That's amazing that it took 3 hours to get to see someone when you could have been having a heart attack. That's crazy. I wouldn't have felt comfortable going into one of the emergency room beds, knowing that someone with CoVID had just been there. Did you call your GP today? I hope you are feeling better. Praying for you. Glad you guys noticed the dog and are able to help your neighbor.2 -
Huge hugs to all that are struggling with personal and family illness. This is a crappy time to be going to the doctor or hospital.
Did 7 miles this afternoon. My brother came into town so I took half a day off and we went for a run. Super terrific weather and hence a great run with the bro. Felt really good and didn't feel like I was dying at the end 😏
I guess I'll see you all in November. Have a great and safe Halloween 🎃6 -
@Scott6255 Glad you got to run with your brother. Sounds like it was a great one!0

So, so much to get caught up on!
Bobcats - when we used to see them we would drive up in the mountains, usually in the service roads in the early evenings as it was getting dark. My friends had a jeep and we would go really slow and then turn the spotlights on. Animals would have come down onto the warm roads and would just freeze in front of us. One of my friends had a really nice camera and would take pictures before they ran off. We would get bobcats, deer, coyotes and once a mountain lion. Granted it was a pretty remote area with few people or cars around so the animals were just doing what they naturally would.
Older parents with technology - I think the more we are exposed to it the easier it will be to adapt and accept new technologies. My 87yo friend that I help care for is very technologically savvy. She has a smartphone and an iPad and knows how to text with us and friends as well as find things on YouTube and order all kinds of crap online. She worked as a book keeper for years and volunteered to do this for her Sr club and as a result learned excel spreadsheets and honestly is a whiz with them. Maybe it is just being open to learn? I don't know but she isn't afraid of the pc or of doing something wrong, although she does sometimes get herself in trouble trying to fix something and we have to go straighten it out for her.
@quilteryoyo - that is so tough that the postponed the surgery. I agree that they are unfamiliar with having people for heart conditions that are in good physical condition, endurance athletes! For sure when I had the PM surgery most of the people didn't know how to answer my questions and have been surprised when I describe issues experienced when I am running. We do tend to do better with the demands of surgery and have an easier time with the recovery.
@marisap2010 - I hope you can get those migraines under control again and feel better to run your 5k!
@Teresa502 - so funny about the pup just wanting to run with you! Maybe he thought if he did you would adopt him. Glad you were able to get in touch with the farmer to take care of the cow!
@rheddmobile - I hope you aren't having a lupus flair! I have read that the impact of Covid on people not getting the care they need, either because they can't get in like you or they won't go because they are afraid, is really bad.
Hope everyone has a good Halloween and if you haven't already (in the US) get out and vote, early if you can or drop off your ballot (too late now to mail it in). In any case have a plan!4 -

I haven't posted a mileage update for a while. I ended up being closer to my 100 mile goal than I thought and with tomorrow's run will be well over it - YAY!
Earlier this week I realized I could sign up (again) for a free Peloton 60 day trial with their app through my health insurance. It gives me access to all the recorded workouts as well as the live classes. I really like it (I do not have their bike or treadmill). I find the runs really motivating especially when they are pushing you to do give it more or giving suggestions about your posture, how your feet are striking the ground, breathing, etc.. So on Wednesday I did my warm up walk and ran to the trail, then did a 20 min HIIT interval run and it felt great. Coming home Hobbes and I were running in the neighborhood street as we normally do but going up on the sidewalk to avoid debris in the street when necessary. We were going down a driveway to go back onto the street when I caught my toe on the uneven pavement and went helicoptering with my arms to not fall. Unfortunately I jammed down on the leg with the off and on sore hip and it sent a sharp pain up into my hip and glute. I honestly didn't think I would be able to walk home. I didn't fall though at the time I thought maybe falling on my face/arms would have been better! We hobbled home and I immediately took to the foam roller. I also took an Aleve and another before bed and got up yesterday with little to no pain. It was a bit sore last night but I decided I would go out today for at least a walk if not a run. So I keyed up a Peloton Power Walk workout having no idea what I was really in for and headed out for my warm up over to the trail. I tried some running in my warmup and nothing hurt too much so when the workout started and wanted a perceived effort of 5-6 I started running. I did the entire workout at a run with some pretty fast (for me) sprints. It really made the run go by fast and there was no stumbling or falling involved! Hip and glute continue to talk a bit but nothing terrible. I think the foam rolling and glute workouts (lunges, squats and glute bridges) are helping.
Finally - this song came on my playlist coming home and I think it is so appropriate for this time. It is from 2012 and I am pretty sure the band is no longer around.

@shanaber Thanks for setting up the Nov thread. Glad you weren't in any pain today! That run sounds intense and you did great!1
-
I did another easy 3 miles on the treadmill today. Also walked one for my warm up and cool down. I think this will be my limit until my surgery. I don't want to push it too much, but don't want to stop and be a couch potato either.7
-
Went out for Parkrun this morning. Walked, not ran. Did it in 46mins! Pretty happy with that.
Am now home alone cause DH took the kids to his parents for the afternoon. So now trying not eat everything lol. I keep wavering between eat all the things, and stick to goal.7 -

Morning all! Got 5 miles in this morning to scrape over only the halfway point of my goal for October 😬 Ah well, it couldn’t be helped and I’m determined next month will be better. This morning the weather was great for running, only the wet leaves as a hazard.
I got some new Asics running gear from a discount website. A long sleeve top, weatherproof running jacket, short sleeve top, leggings and two pairs of running shoes for around £250 (~$320 I think). Wore the short sleeve top and one of the new pairs of shoes. The top was super comfortable and perfect for the weather. The shoes were too tight on the right foot so a real struggle. I had to keep stopping and stretching my calf. By the end of the run the left foot felt pretty good and the right was better so will persevere on breaking them in...
@shanaber - thanks for setting us up for November. Mulling a realistic but challenging goal for myself. Rumour here is a full national lockdown for up to a month is on its way....

@rheddmobile I hope it isn’t a flare up. I hate that the ER was so backed up. Take it easy.
@shanaber Glad your injury wasn’t worse! Thanks for setting up November.0 -
@katharmonic I feel you on being over the streak. I tried to do the runner's world summer streak and didn't even make it a month. it only took a little over 3 weeks for me to realize that my body just does not like running every single day. I'm always really impressed by people that are able to keep up the super long streaks, like @AlphaHowls. You're doing great though and getting so close to the end of the year. I bet a good solid rest day will feel luxurious after that!3
-
@Faebert Back when I used the treadmills at the gym (you know, in the before times) I tried once to watch something while running. I don't know how people do it! I got straight up motion sickness! But if I looked at the big TV that they have hanging from the ceiling, it was fine. It's just usually set on something I don't want to watch.
I haven't seen the show, but the book was fantastic. Scary and is starting to feel a little too real unfortunately.1 -
My parents were a bit slow on the smartphone uptake too. When my dad first started texting, he would start and finish all of the text like a letter. But now, he even uses emojis. My mom is not great at actually keeping her cell phone on her person, but at least she doesn't complain about using it.
@kat_ontherun Welcome back!3 -

Sunny and low 30s F today, with no wind. If it was difficult for me to adjust from running outside to treadmill, it was equally difficult to adjust from treadmill to back outside. I felt like I had two little centipede legs trying to propel me forward and was sure I was going to fall flat on my face. I eventually adjusted, but it was really strange.
@shanaber Thank you for setting us up for November!!!Rainy and low 40s F today, so back to the treadmill. Applied what I learned yesterday: turned the overhead fan on before I started; opened the sliding glass door to let some cool air in; turned up the volume on my phone so I could hear the music; etc. etc. Was surprised I was more dizzy today than yesterday.
For those good naturedly grumbling about stubborn parents, take heart: perhaps someday you will be one yourself!!!

Went out for a run in the early afternoon yesterday in the most perfect weather ever. I did the prescribed workout but it felt so hard because I wasn't properly fueled. I don't usually run at that time of day and I definitely did not adjust appropriately. I am such a creature of habit and my body kind of freaks out when I mess up the routine. I have been running primarily in the morning and I think my body was kind of "Woah, what is this?!?".
I am planned for a run today after work, but it's Halloween and I don't know if I will get it in around the prep for tonight. We are doing socially distanced trick-or-treat, so we are setting up a table and treat bags in our driveway and then put chairs further up the drive so we can sit outside and see the costumes but not be in the mix. I really like seeing all the kids out in their costumes.
My daughter is going as a librarian. She even has a little book cart. It's adorable! She is a huge reader, so it is a perfect fit. I will have to post a picture.5 -
@rheddmobile I hope it is not a lupus flare. It is so frustrating trying to get health care these days.
@shanaber I'm glad you had a good run today and the stumble didn't cause any serious issues.0 -
Stuck for two weeks in WY so no running only hiking. But still got 12 miles in this month. Short quite a few but 5 of those in the last three days6
-
Ugh, could not do 12 today. Did 10.3 and had to call it. I'm 1.1 miles short of 100. 😭
I may go out this afternoon and do a loop around my block to hit 10010 -
@Faebert maybe look at lacing. There are loads of different ways to lace your shoes, and there may be a method that helps your shoes feel better.
I'm a firm believer that you should never have to break shoes in. If they aren't right at first, then they may not be right for you.

Rest day for me. And actually resting. Thinking of taking the kids out to the stock cars so they can see their cousin race. But no actual plans. Just relaxing, quilting, chilling.
Tomorrow though, I get to run for 5 minute intervals! And I get to run 4 days!! I hope the calf holds up...5 -

A brisk 8 miles this morning. I didn’t start until 7:00 am and it was 34F. Still trying to adjust to dressing for colder weather. Passed my mileage goal for the month and survived my virtual marathon so I’ll call it a win.
Congratulations to everyone hitting their October goals and to everyone for setting one to start with and doing their best to get there!
@rheddmobile – Thinking of you and sending healing thoughts and prayers your way.
@shanaber – Glad you didn’t fall or hurt yourself seriously. Thanks for setting us for October!

No, I distinctly remember a 'rest day' right after the glaciers melted. I think that was the day I turned my toe nail black running from woolly mammoths or a sloth...

Haven't been here in forever! Said I wouldn't pay to run a 5k but I did and I loved it and I got 2nd place in my age category 30:20:04 (9:46 minute miles)! I'm so proud of what these short, little legs did for me today! Surprise surprise! Happy Halloween, everyone!
